My wife and I both got one. She was refreshing the page, and the button to order went active about 2 minutes before. We also made sure to have the money already in our Steam wallets in anticipation of payment processor hiccups.
Jeez. I didn't even realize this was coming out today. Well, that's OK. Hopefully they'll turn on a waitlist or something. I don't NEED one. Certainly not this instant. I still have the original that works fine.
I imagine with the Steam Machine, whenever that gets released, they'll also have a steady supply of these controllers.
I was lucky enough to get one, but I have no idea why Valve didn't handle this launch like they did the Deck where you reserved a virtual spot in line if you had a long-term steam account in good standing with $X spent. Maybe at this point they figure people have gamed that a bit, but you're never going to completely defeat scalpers.
I don’t get the rush here. With a new console I totally understand why everyone tries to get on day 1 - there’s no other way to play the games for it.
But for a new controller? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cool controller and I plan to buy one, but it’s not going to revolutionize my gaming experience or anything to the point where it can’t wait a couple weeks.
Don't get me wrong, wouldn't have been in a funk if I had to wait. I just really like the original and was free at launch time.
The rest is just general frustration with the modern state of having to compete with bots to do just about anything online. I get that it's not a trivial problem... but a lot of times the only resources thrown at it seems to be a bucket of corporate apathy. After all none of these products are 'necessary'.
Scalpers have always been a nuisance. It's just in the before times they had to go try to buy out whole stocks from physical stores and risked getting jumped in the parking lot.
My OG Steam Controllers are dying. I'm on the verge of two controllers short for family game night.
While I can wait, this is very much is my white whale :)
I also think Tildes has one of the highest concentrations of OG Steam Controller users, so this is big news.
Unfortunately it's looking like scalpers are already pilfering them onto ebay. Remember to not feed them, and keep checking back in since it seems like they're doing waves.
Worth noting you can go through and report them for Presale. I did that to about 20 listings, because I'm petty and I want one.
They are allowed to list them if the listing states "presale"
Such BS
My friends think they're doing drops/releases every 30 minutes. Bots are probably only watching for the initial release and will drop off after that, or at least we hope so.
Not available in NZ.
I managed to snag one in Aus.
Physical travel or vpn etc?
Physical presence :)
Valve is implementing a reservation queue to try and fix the issues with the launch: https://store.steampowered.com/news/group/45479024/view/702141174212725149
Hopefully this system will perform well so the rest of the steam hardware launches go smoother.
edit: there's already a thread up about it: https://tildes.net/~games/1u32/steam_controller_reservations_open_may_8th
Kept getting the payment processing error for an hour and now they're sold out. Hoping I can get one, as it supposed to be a Fathers Day gift to myself.
Managed to snag one an hour after it went live.
Excited to try it out with World of Warcraft.
Seems like it's sold out in my region now as well. Hopefully they get more stock soon for the people who missed out.
I am furious, I had two in my cart and was stuck with the damn payment error. People online were saying to keep spamming continue and it'll work.
I did this for the entire 30+ minutes until the error changed to say the items were sold out.
Such fucking bullshit. How did they not anticipate the server load needed? And why did they not do a queue like they did for the Index and decks??
Such a waste of time. I was so looking forward to getting these and now who knows when they'll come.
Same happened to me. Was supposed to be a Fathers Day gift.
Yes I'm a little sore about it, but I guess in the grand scheme I'm trying to remember that if this is the biggest issue I have right now, I'm ok.
Still frustrated.
I had the same thing happen, kept clicking the button until the error changed.
):
Oh well, I guess I just have to wait for the next drop.
I feel like furious is a very strong word, haha. I feel like they're gonna make more so it's not a huge deal right? Not like it changes everything immediately.
I was really looking forward to getting them, I had plans for couch co-op with the lady cause she's expressed interest in some of that. I thought these would be perfect, and was waiting for them, which originally were to be released in Q1, then delayed due to the Ram issues for the Machine and Frame.
But they finally put these out and Im ready to go, and then this shit happens.
Who knows how long it'll take them to restock. It could be months or longer. I've been waiting since they announced all this back in what November I think? And now waiting yet again.
I think furious is justified when its an issue that shouldn't have been a problem. They do thousands of payment transactions every day, for decades now, this should not be a pain point for this kind of thing.
And they already had a system in place for queuing they used for the Index and the decks, why didn't they utilize that to cut down on the server load?? Lot of balls dropped here for no reason
I had one in my cart and then had to leave for a bit and when I came back it was sold out.
Friend managed to snag one though.
I'm not too worried all in all. They'll most likely restock them soon enough. It'll also give me more time to see more user reviews.
Got two! Curious how long they'll take to ship up here to Canada, I don't know if the 3-5 business days advertised is accurate
There is some sort of processing backlog mentioned on the shipment details page for Canadian orders specifically. I think it’s very unlikely they will meet the 3-5 business days.
About 20 minutes ago I was getting the yellow error message saying the payment processor was having trouble but just now I managed to buy one. :)
Jesus, I made a comment to my friend this morning that it was kind of a niche item, and with the $99 price tag too I wasn't expecting it to pop off.
Thankfully, I did log in 3 minutes before they went on sale (only to discover they had gone on sale early, which annoyed me). It took me twenty minutes of trying to get through the payment processor issues, and during that time the expected ship date went from 3-5 business days to 6-10, but I did manage to snag one. I had originally planned two, but an accident seemingly bricked my e-reader yesterday, so I have to save some money for that.
Glad to see it's popular, hopefully means they'll continue to support and iterate on it (coughability work without steam pleasecough), and I'm excited to try it for myself when it arrives
I don't think it's called the 2
Steam Controller (2026)
I still think we should all call it Steam Controller 2.
I will accept "2 Steam 2 Controller"
2team Controller?
Nah. I thought of Steam Cont2oller earlier and rejected it too.
Stwom Controller
What’s so special about this controller? IOOTL
It takes the Steam Deck controls and puts them in a controller format.
For perverts like myself who have become accustomed to using the trackpads on the Deck to play a variety of Keyboard + Mouse driven PC games, it's a game changer. I have two original Steam Controllers which I very much love and use frequently, but I have my complaints about them (No D-Pad, no Right Analogue) and the Controller 2 solves both those issues.
I managed to get one with no difficulties. I must have lucked out somehow because I literally just refreshed the page, saw it was up a few minutes early, added it, and completed the purchase. If it weren't for all the posts complaining about things not working, I would have never known that people were having trouble.
I got one when orders opened, got a number of errors before entering payment, but payment thankfully went through without issue. A friend couldn't get one for a while but managed to get through 30 minutes later or so it seemed. Hopefully it's just this initial wave that has issues and they restock soon.
Reservations are open again!
