I’m not going to preorder GTA6, but have preordered games on digital stores before, AMA.

      edit:

There use to be a comment that was deleted asking for reasons. I'll put in an edit here:

There's a couple of reasons, and it varies by game. One is that it kind of "preloads" decisions so you don't have to think about it later on. Another is being able to preload the download the day before, so on the day of release you can just start the game rather than download 200 gb.

There's also some game releases that are just events, and whether they're good or bad it's fun to be there in the moment. I preordered cyberpunk and don't regret it for a second; playing the buggy release and talking about it and having the experience with friends was more fun than most actual games.

Other ones that I'm just pretty sure I'll enjoy. A recent game I preordered was pragmata. I played the demo, was sold, preordered the game after I finished and didn't really think about it again until the game came out.

It's also just not that big of a deal. Games are cheap - they're like $60-$80. I spend more grabbing dinner with friends. Even if it's a flop, is what it is. You win some, lose some.

If I think that reviews may change whether or not I'll buy the game, I usually won't preorder, but there's also some games where it really doesn't matter what any review or media comes out about it, I'm going to buy it anyway.

But in the end I'm just not going to agonize over $60. For something like a new Zelda? If I'm going to buy it frame 1 of coming out no matter what, why not just preorder it?

You certainly didn't need to pre-order to have this experience. I had a shiny new Xbox Series X sitting in my living room but no new games to really see what it could do. Cyberpunk had already been out for several days, the reviews were out, and they were awful. I went down to my local Walmart and bought a copy off the shelf anyway, both to play a modern game on my fancy new Xbox and to laugh at the dumpster fire along with everyone else.

In the end it wasn't the bugs that bothered me, it was just how garbage the game was in general. Just a mashup of poorly thought out rpg systems and no reason to engage with most of them. Cops that materialized out of thin air even after they claimed the game was fixed. Pointless character customization for a single player first person game.

Even worse is that eventually people started proclaiming it "a completely new game" and 10/10 and all that. I booted it up several times over the years and nope, it's still the same lifeless shell that it always was.

For what it's worth, i disagree. It is very much a different game from launch, but it's never going to be (nor was intended, even if marketed) as GTA Cyberpunk.

Them cleaning up the in game economy (DRASTICALLY cut back on looter shooter shit), skills, hardware, etc finally made it fun to do different builds, and let the extremely well made combat/levels shine (great weapon design, fun skills, lots of ways to approach a mission from god tier to struggle and all can be fun).

Launch cyberpunk was absolutely garbage and current cyberpunk is an easy recommend and yes probably up there with any other 10/10 most would name, but it's best selling points aren't often what people try to sell it on.

I was very far removed from the whole thing. I had seen basically no marketing for it and bought it at release just to experience it with a friend who was excited for it. My initial impression was it was a mediocre buggy cyberpunk RPG. I enjoyed it alright at release but it didn't feel like it was worth the cost.

Now in it's current state I thouroughly enjoy it. Sure it still has some bugs and jank, but it's far more polished than release. Like you said, the gunplay/cybernetics and different approaches to the missions are what make it so fun for me. Though I can understand why people are mad at what was effectively a rug pull at release. As someone that went into it with no expectations I'm happy with it's current state and it sits next to Deus Ex: Human Revolution in my brain.

About a year ago and never having never played Cyberpunk myself I saw someone play a version 1.0 on YouTube to see if it really was that bad at launch.

Not long after I saw that video the game went on sale and I figured I'd see what it was all about. Turns out most of the glitches in that game are still present today. Fixed my ass.

I'm sure they shored up some interplay between systems but it's still a buggy mess.

Preordering after a demo is extremely reasonable. Preorder sales are another good reason I've gone for games. If I was going to play it anyway, I'll happily take the discount for prepaying.

Just to personally respond on most of this as another data point

One is that it kind of "preloads" decisions so you don't have to think about it later on.
Fair enough. There are games I KNOW i'm buying launch day, but i also just put it in my calendar because i'm 100% against encouraging any pre-order exclusivity behavior.

Another is being able to preload the download the day before, so on the day of release you can just start the game rather than download 200 gb.

This is so whatever to me these days. I'm usually at work (hurray tuesday releases due to physical logistics!) , can start the install remotely, and personally play very few games that take more than 30 min to download anyways. Not to mention when you consider launch bugs i'm rarely chomping at the bit to play day of. Only games i've done that for in recent memory are Marathon and Elden Ring. Still, I don't see this as a major point in favor of preorder as you're still probably playing launch day or the day after at worst.

There's also some game releases that are just events, and whether they're good or bad it's fun to be there in the moment.

I see this slightly differently but yeah that's kinda the souls series feeling. Those first few days while everyone is figuring things out can feel different than hopping in later in a more dead world.

I preordered cyberpunk and don't regret it for a second; playing the buggy release and talking about it and having the experience with friends was more fun than most actual games.

Yeah given the window on that preordering wasn't much of a necessity for this.

Grouping these because I see them related. Ignoring definitions of "cheap" (i do think games are some of the best value for money out there, but $60-80 isn't nothing), backlog bloat is a thing as are sales. I've got over 100 games on my wishlist (wiiiiiich I think more than half of have no release date, and may never) and I think that's a better way to do it. LOTS of stuff comes out that i'm interested in, but I probably don't have time for when it launches. It can sit on the wishlist and I can dip into it later when I have some time, or if it hits a sale threshold (sub $10 i'll usually snap up anything that's got positive reviews and on my list).

But in the end I'm just not going to agonize over $60. For something like a new Zelda? If I'm going to buy it frame 1 of coming out no matter what, why not just preorder it?

To which my take is "because it encourages more predatory behavior in the long run". I am 100% fine with cosmetic pre-order bonuses, go nuts. I'm kiiinda okay with minor gameplay bonuses (easy mode stuff, whatever.) Locking any core content behind a pre-order is disgusting, and I feel like the more people who just don't do it the better it is. Doubly so when the vast majority of people who do pre-order are not on the "meh whatever" mindset but instead are turbo fans who expect the world and blow up when it whiffs.

There's no reason to ever pre-order a game. Alas, normies will continue to do so in droves, emboldening triple-A game studios to continue the practice.

Keep in mind I’m not one of those who buys AAA games frequently, maybe one or two a year, if that.

Games I’ve pre-ordered were GTA 5, RDR 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and a few more I forgot about, and I’ve only ever regretted one, which was Starfield.

I pre-order games on Steam if they have pre-order bonuses that interest me, but only the day before they come out (or before a pre-order early start period begins) so that I can try out the game for an hour and a half and return it if it's not to my liking. This way I get the best of both worlds: I get the chance to have all the extra content as well as the opportunity to get a full refund if I don't like it.

I did this with Pragmata. Tried it out, and while it's not a bad game, it wasn't one I was really that interested in completing after having beaten the first boss. It might be something I pick up down the line at a discount, and yes, I'll miss out on the couple of bonus costumes from pre-ordering, but I won't loose sleep over those.

I guess this will be the first GTA I play on PC first. Random thought I just realized as I don't own a current gen console.

Rant time: I hate the pre-order bonuses have moved from actual items to just skins. Yes, you should never pre-order a game. I have never cared enough about skins in my life to pay for them. It's kind of nice that this game actually gives you both, but without context, I don't know if a car and garage is useful. Is this car special in some way to all the other cars you can steal in Grand Theft Auto? Or is effectively just another skin? How good is this garage compared to whatever location the story campaign gives you or is it effectively just a skin of another location you will own by default through playing the story?

    /End rant.

Plus, we're way past the point where they can justify not releasing on PC. Basically every game studio not owned by Sony or Nintendo does PC/Console release without any issues, there's no reason a game with the budget of GTA VI can't do it.

As much as I enjoyed playing GTA5 and RDR2, I played them years after their release and I got them on sale. So far I have stayed away from the hype and marketing surrounding GTA6 and will likely not be getting the game for a year or two at the very least. Throw in the price on release and the actions of Rockstar and Take Two and that makes my decision to not get it on release even easier.

For me, I couldn’t stomach supporting Rockstar after what they did in the UK late last year.

It’s been interesting to read through the responses here but I didn’t spot anyone talking about how Rockstar abruptly fired dozens of staff late last year, and it just so happens that the fired staff were all seeking to establish a union, and the timing just happened to be around when the union movement reached the critical number of members to be officially recognised under UK law.

As I’ve learned more about the details, primarily via People Make Games YouTube channel (they’ve made a series of videos on this topic as the details have come out, I think it’s great journalism from the team!), I’ve become convinced that this alleged “misconduct” is just thinly veiled union busting to avoid the most obvious lawbreaking that they’re clearly doing.

I also think if it is false allegations, that’s even more horrible because of how much allegations of misconduct can severely damage any future job prospects. I hope the judge in the court case digs into the details and doesn’t just side with Rockstar without proper, substantial evidence.

This is it: the watershed moment when we'll look back and see the jumping of the shark (card). GTAVI will still make bank, but they've lost their status as the cultural zeitgeist. As the status quo, they've lost the ability to create any effective satire. As the last iteration of a GTA franchise we'll see this generation, they have lost the cool they need for the profits they are indebted to make.

Sounds implausibe. Sounds like a crazy, ill-formed prediction. But people are already fed up. Live service is dead. People are embracing undies as major dev's shutter their door, ushering even more indie to spawn. In other nerd news, Star Wars has lost its mojo. Comic book movies have entered the fatigue zone, meaning the "hell freezes over" scenario of a DC/Marvel team is imminent after Secret Wars flops.

The one thing we can be sure of is that the AI shitpost memes of GTAVI gameplay and cutscenes are going to be glorious.
