Introductions | May 2018, part 3
I saw that the 2nd thread by @vibe was dying so I decided to post a new one.
Howdy, my name is Odin, or /u/alibyte. I go by alibyte on absolutely everything (except here). I moved here because I was sick of the blatant political bias on Reddit and the massive echo chamber it became. I'm looking forward to the future of this place :)
I'm Brian.
inb4 we see a new version of the Life of Brian. "This time, it's less roman and more roamin'."
Hey, I'm that gif person from that other website.
Cool, more reddit-famous people!
Howdy! I am /u/scituselectrum. I found out about Tildes through Reddit. I love STEM and philosophy. I liked the idea of Tildes as it encourages healthy dialogue (or at least that's how I see it). I avoided any kind of participation in Reddit mainly because it tends to end up in some sort of conflict (this obviously depends on the subreddit). In any case, I will do my best to be as active as possible over here!
Hi there, I'm Reppamon! I'm yet another user here from reddit where I'm for the most part a lurker, aside from some small participation in niche Pokémon related subreddits. I'm not best at introductions or talking about myself/easily carrying conversations, but I felt that I should try to participate in this community since it's just beginning to sprout!
I felt drawn to Tildes after reading about its aims and the type of environment that will be cultivated here, especially the goal of keeping things civil and polite! I'm all for a friendly feeling to a site like this!
I hope to enjoy my time here and maybe actually become an active member in spite of my social anxiousness and tendency to lurk. If anyone would for some reason like to talk to me, please feel free, though I don't believe I'm the most interesting person to talk to (but hey, I do at least have some people in my life who would disagree with that statement!)
Apologies for my rambling on, and thanks to anyone who read this long intro!
Hi @odin
I'm Ten, welcome.
Formerly /u/TheLetterTen and currently /u/MsElleTen. I hope you'll feel welcomed here. I, too, felt like the political bias of Reddit's direction was becoming too much what with spez openly allowing hate speech to grow and fester all throughout of Reddit. I am also a streamer like you (looked on your Reddit profile, guilty!), On Twitch simply as TheLetterTen.
I'm @pseudolobster. I enjoy DIY content, hobbyist electronics, crazy programming projects, and a whole spectrum of other stuff I can't sum up in a comment.
I dislike GTKY threads, meta threads, redundant threads, and the default sorting of new comments that leads to new GTKY threads being posted when there's already an active one.
Hey, I'm Andrewski. I'm passionate about liberty (personal freedoms, free markets, small govt) and traveling.
My interests include FOSS software, linux, gardening, sustainability, board games, pc games, cryptocurrency, camping, sci-fi and fantasy, hiking, guns, and ultimate frisbee.
I've gotten tired of reddit's dumbing down the interface and content, lack of privacy, manipulation, shadowbans, etc. I thought voat might be a viable alternative, but it's zero moderation principles have lead to a racist takeover so that's clearly not the solution.
I hope I can help this community in fostering interesting dialogue and respect for all various opinions.
Hi I'm @crates, pretty interested in the sort of community that tildes will develop around ~comp and hopefully a future gamedev. I'm really keen on software development right now and hoping to find a good place to chat about it. I'm dissatisfied with most forums I've found and come from some of the smaller imageboards in hope that I can find a similar but more active community. I really like some of the ideas behind tildes and I think that it has learned a lot from its predecessor's shortcomings but I guess that is yet to be seen.
Hi, I'm my user name. Working musician for over 25 years, guitar teacher, avid reader, and foodie. I more than welcome a version of that other site without all its problems we've come to know. Here's to hoping!
Welcome to ~!
How do you find the world of music? Do you have a link to any music I could listen to?
Yep! My current band is Extreme Leisure. I do all the vocals and guitars, and most of the writing. I make no claims of its awesomeness, we're just in it for fun.
https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/extremeleisure/dwpf
What kind of shit do you play? Are you mostly a rock guy?
I play a lot of metal and rock, but also literally any style I can get my hands on. Getting stale can kill a man!
Hello all
Same name here as on reddit. Over there I mod /r/bestoflegaladvice. I'm not as disillusioned with reddit as I'm sure a lot of you are (hell, I even genuinely like the redesign over there and have been using it since the early alphas). I'm here because I always like seeing new communities as they grow and checking out what they do better or worse than others.
Haven't had much time to check the place out yet since I just got in tonight and have been looking around on my phone. Looking forward to taking a proper tour in the morning.
Hi! I'm sqew. I go by something involving the string "sq" on pretty much everything that isn't gaming oriented. I joined ~ after seeing the post on HN, becoming really interested in the long-term goals of the community, and realizing that I might have some opportunity to help shape a nascent online community, which is something I've thought about quite a bit but never had the chance to do before.
Like @odin in the OP, I'm really looking forward to seeing where this site goes and helping where I can.
'ello all, I'm here from a friend recommendation. I'm very much a tech nerd and am interested in development of Tildes just as much as curating content!
Hey all, Kenji here, same username as reddit
I've been on the internet for a while lol (neopets/napster/kazaa/etc). Back in 2006-2007, mainly used stumble upon. Then found digg for a bit. Eventually went to reddit instead, better content, less nonsense, it just felt like an awesome place to find/discuss topics.
Lately though, i'm looking for a replacement. I see the same memes on reddit all the time. Same stories. Same comments. You can open a thread and guess 75% of the comments already, depending on the topic. It's fun, but after so many times, it gets old. Especially when it's a topic that should be taken more seriously. There's always a time and place.
I hope this site takes off. I want that discussion again.
Me, I'm in IT. I fix everything with technology. Lately been trying to get more into 3dprinting (got a prusa mk3 kit!). I do a bunch of random stuff with tech when i'm bored.
Hey all - I've slowly been migrating all my accounts away from my real name, so I'll introduce myself as what I go by on Twitch and Discord: @cancel. For the above reason, I won't post my reddit username, but I have mostly posted on hobbyist subbreddits (r/mechanicalkeyboards, r/mechmarket, r/fountain_pens, r/watches, etc) along with some gaming subreddits. If you know my name, it's probably from a) the word, but b) Crypt of the Necrodancer, where I founded a competitive speedrunning league that's been running for around three years at this point.
I'm now an attorney, so I might post some legal-related stuff on here. Not entirely sure how I want to interact with this site yet; my vibe is mostly small, dedicated communities, and right now things feel a bit like a scrum (though way less so than Reddit!). Hoping to get hobbyist communities up and running, too.
Nice to meet you @cancel. Welcome to ~!
Hi im @Kernal, also /u/unofficialKernal on reddit. You'll probably see me on ~comp and ~games sometime since I've been frequenting there quite a bit.
Hey Everyone, I'm Zac.
I am a 27-year-old college student and certified Tree trimmer. Building computers and reading about computer hardware news is my biggest hobby, but I also like guitar, playing video games, and motorcycles. Unlike a lot of people around these parts currently, I have never been a mod on Reddit, I've never found myself to be dedicated enough to a community to pay attention to it at all times. I'm too eclectic and many interests enter my purview and exit on a regular basis.
Hello I'm Bhavya. I also found this website on Reddit where I don't usually comment much. I'm currently in college aspiring to do something that makes me proud. Hoping to keep on contributing to this platform though. I'll probably be contributing mostly to ~movies ~tv and ~music. I'm dissatisfied with Reddit even though it is great for memes, however most of the times things get way too political for my likeness in subs that are meant for leisure.
Also its good to meet everyone!!!
What are you doing in college? You enjoying it so far?
Yeah, ~ has been pretty great so far! Enjoy being here.
Currently pursuing CSE. I messed up my +2 due to my careless attitude, I didn't get my dream college. Although hoping to correct my past mistake and trying to make the best use of the resources given to me.
Also I've found like minded peers who also constantly motivate me so it's going better than I hoped it would.
I'm loving it right now! Also Enjoy being here :)
That sounds great! Good luck with college, it's so good to have peers who can support and push you further.
Hey all,
I'm a Reddit user trying to find a better place to migrate to where the users aren't as inclinated to start a heated argument over relatively minor stuff (Reddit promotes that sort of behavior especially with the upvote downvote thing.)
I've been on Reddit right after digg did their redesign and I've been on digg before that happened. I'm in my early thirties even still I'm mostly interested in games, cooking, and politics.
It's great to see the way people are currently behaving here. I hope it continues to be a positive space for civil discourse. Echo Chambers such, but vitroil in responses sucks more.
Hi I’m weenie. I’m here from reddit. Nice to be here.
Hi everyone! I'm Hcbille, I came to find this site from a discussion on Reddit about how the site was morphing into a Facebook replacement.
I work in IT at a Helpdesk for a major Swedish news org. I love Android, most things FOSS and mechanical keyboards.
Welcome to ~!
Nice to have more people from Europe joining up. But hold up, you can't mention mechanical keyboards without posting a picture of yours OP...
Because I mentioned mechanical keyboards.
Hey, I'm Tripp. I've enjoyed sifting through various online communities since the early 80s when I got a Hayes Modem -- BBS. Usenet. The WELL. So. Many. Forums. Slashdot. And of course reddit.
I have fond memories of ASCII porn and people engaging in conversation with others online because it was novel and heralded an era of electronic communication. I didn't anticipate all the cat photos though.
I'm looking forward to seeing ~ grow and evolve.
Oh, hello fellow old fart who remembers when modems were still measured in bauds. I was more of an ANSI art kinda guy on BBS' than ASCII art on web forums though. Speaking of which, why didn't any web forums support ANSI art!? That always bummed be out when I transitioned away from BBS'. :(
Maybe I can convince @deimos to let us have a ~creative.ansi group with ANSI support at some point so people can showcase their oldschool computer art skills there.
p.s. Welcome to ~ :)
Howdy everyone! I'm @Jackson and I, too, am a reddit transplant. Over yonder, I'm known by the name of /u/jackson1442 and I'm a moderator on lots of places.
I'm from Texas, and love the direction tildes is moving in. Sure, toxicity is more concentrated in the moderator view on reddit, but this site just seems to lack all of that - no assholes, no arguing. It just works for me.
I love computers and things about them, I have also written a few light bots for personal and/or moderation use over on reddit, and am excited to see when we get a python wrapper for the API over here.
Cheers!
I'm SleepyGary, reddit user for over 12 years, chose not to port over my name as I wanted anustart. Sometimes play games with Deimos, I know him through mutual friends. I am software developer, have been for 15 years now, and hope to switch occupations after seeing through the startup/small business I'm with become a real boy.
Hi! I'm Jesse, I got by a little bit of different aliases. "Jesse, Jehsea, Cooyd, xlol, Menace, and now Saw."
Happy to be apart of this, I'm into technology and video games and anime and lots of other lame stuff. If anyone needs any help with anything feel free to let me know.
Hi!
I am Tyler, I go by TylerWarranty literally everywhere except Reddit where I am /u/jackofallcards. I was once TylerWarranty there too but that account disappeared a few years ago so I had to make a new one!
While I feel like mass appeal can be a good thing to promote progress, Reddit is frequently victim to the everyday contributor which has put a serious damper on the quality of everything as a whole, much like many of it's predecessors. I am a UI/UX Developer/Data Analyst professionally (since I see people posting what they do) and I am glad to be here!
Hi I'm /u/pottsunami. Came over from Reddit of course. I recently looked at my posts and saw I talk about politics too much. That being said I hope to have insightful political conversations here. I love ~sports, ~games, and ~movies on my free time.
I'm hoping to find an older population here. I felt like Reddit used to be educational and now it's all a big joke for teenagers.
Hi! I'm /u/DyebrewsWitch - named Alexis in real life. I'm done with how Reddit has turned into DAE TRUMP SUCKS and DAE HILLARY DEEP STATE. And also just bias in general.
Hi everyone! /u/Sys_Ad_MN on reddit. Looks like plenty of you are into tech. I think we’ll all get along nicely. Cant wait to see where this place goes!
Sup everybody! Wac here, /u/wacrover from Reddit. totallynotcfabbro threw me an invite after he'd mentioned he'd been working / helping / whatever'ing over here.
Founded TIL on Reddit, <3 KrispyKrackers because she's cool AF.
Playing tagpro, got 2 kids, 3 jobs, and recently got appointed rescue captain of my volunteer Fire department.
I like that I have to scroll down to comment - does that make me weird?
Oh baby... getting the /r/ideasfortheadmins crew together again on ~! Say hi to @krispykrackers too, @wacrover (she just got back from Cuba so hasn't been around much the last week). ;)
And no that doesn't make you weird... I absolutely love the new top-level comment box being at the bottom and the comment vote + vote count being under the comments too. They're such small changes but send such an important message about the priority here vs other social media sites.
Heyoooo!!! Glad to see you here!
Hi!
I'm /u/Snipatomic
I am a PhD candidate specializing in electron microscopy, and I'll likely hang around the ~science community to discuss and answer chemistry, physics, and engineering questions.
Like others around here, I am looking for an alternative to Reddit, though I am still occasionally active on there.
So far, this seems to be a friendly and civil place. Let's keep it that way!
Cheers!
Hello everyone! im /u/cloudbuster274 on reddit, a noone of no importance that hangs out on the fantasy subreddit most often and mod their (very small) discord, along with that I lurk in a number of other techy and engineering forums. I am terribly bad at participating in conversations in forums but so it goes.
I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the future here with a cautiously optimistic view!
Hello! I am Comedy (been my online name for 10 years now). I am a filmmaker, in post production of my first feature film and currently started writing ideas for the second one that I will hopefully be shooting in November. Love films (obviously) and have an unhealthy addiction to Steelbooks.
Hey--I'm bluesage and also follow the lineage of digg to reddit and now tildes. I might be a bit of an anomaly here (69 year old person of the female persuasion) but I'm still curious about all the things. And facebook makes me throw up a little in my mouth every time I am forced to go there. Fingers crossed this site thrives.
Hey Folks!
I just your resident programmer/gamer/stoner enjoying a new place to explore on the internet.
Work: Currently working on some location based AR applications and helping out on the web side of things when needed. At my current role, I feel like I'm being paid to play!
Games: I play too many. In the past weekend, WoW, Destiny 2, Warframe, Dauntless, Monster Hunter: World, NHL 18, Elder Scrolls Online, Bless Online (for about 45 minutes), and probably some others!
Weed: Current strains are "Tangerine Kush" and "Moonshine Haze".
Other: Remodeling, outdoorsing, and most other typical adult stuff!
Hi. I am /u/TheHalfGenius . I learned about tildes from reddit. So far i am enjoying it. Cheers
I'm from the reddits too. Lawyer, jack of all trades, philosopher, and poly.
I lurk more than I post, but I look forward to what this could be.
Hi everybody,
I'm Halfdeaf everywhere on the internet except two places. Reddit convert since this morning. I'm really liking this place so far. Nice people with stuff to say, lots of civil discourse. I've mostly been lurking reddit for the past 8 or so years and feel like I need to start involving myself more in things like this wonderful promising place.
I'm battling a slight impostor syndrome, seeing all the names here, mods and admins and what not. I've been casually looking for a communtity to join for some time now after I decided reddit wasn't the place it once was. ~ just happened to be brought to my attention at the right time while randomly wandering into that reddit vs Facebook thread from r/all.
Anyway, games of all shapes and sizes, tech, books, sci fi, fantasy, food and interesting things are my thing. Chef, father, dog owner, I guess I am.
Welcome to ~! Your dog must quite enjoy that his human is a chef, I bet the homemade treats are extra tasty.
Hello I am cyberpagan. I am interested in cyberpunk-esque DIY electronics, experimental music, practical anti-capitalism, Terry Pratchett and drugs. I enjoy talking about all these things online and have been looking for a good place to do so. Reddit only gets worse and vote makes me sick. Been here since this morning and so far have high hopes.
Hi, I'm clerical_terrors. I took that username a while ago on Reddit when I started moderating and I grew to like it. Even after I tried to distance myself from it and deleted the Reddit account. I care a lot about video games, anime, programming, cooking and online discussion in general (part of the reason I wanted to moderate on Reddit was because I wanted to see what it was like on the 'other side')
hey all, i'm tori. i'm 29 and live in texas. i'm a product manager for identity and access management at an enterprise saas company. i dont have many hobbies just because of life: i have three kids, a husband, three dogs, and a fairly high-stress job. during the week, i mostly like to unwind on the couch with a few drinks, watch our shows, and catch up with my husband. we go out to dinner often and go out to brunch with friends every weekend. i love to churn credit cards and then redeem those points to travel. we're going to amsterdam and germany next month on business class flights, all for free. i'm excited to be part of this community! so far i'm already loving it.
edit: i'm from reddit like everyone else and am /u/toritxtornado over there.
Hi. I'm Josh. But you guessed that, didn't you?
nope
im azazo9 lmao i like video games and tv shows and dont like reddit admin censorship
I'm Donald_Trump. ...Kind of regretting picking this username but 🤷 no going back now.
I'm interested in serious discussions about music (music theory, music history etc.). None of reddit's music subreddits are really worth while, and /mu/ is, well, /mu/;* I'm hoping it'll be possible to foster some kind of music community on here since there aren't many alternatives. I'm especially interested in talking about jazz and classical music.
*/mu/ has some decent discussions occasionally but it's mostly shitposts
Happy to change it for you if you'd like something else (send me a private message if you'd prefer).
Haha thank you, but I think I'll stick with it. It'll be a badge of shame, if you will.
Haha, this was fun to read then check out the username.
Good choice!
Lol, thanks.
