I didn’t read the article, but I’ll throw my wildest guess out there: Everyone is talking about Severance at the moment, even people that I know, who hate Apple so viscerally, that they will literally spit on random iPhones they see them on the streets. Apple can lure those naysayers in with a small fee for a limited time, and some really good exclusive shows. Then they’ll “magically” forget to cancel their subscription after the promotional period ends. Et voilà, just like that, Apple created millions of dollars in their pockets out of thin air.

Don’t fall for it my friends.

    Sincerely,

A die-hard Apple fanboy (not sarcastic)

P.S.: Has anyone else watched Silo? I loved it. I haven’t watched Severance yet though. Is it any good?

Severance is fantastic, expect a slow burn but the last episode of the first season is the most gripping 45 minutes of television I’ve ever watched. Second season is great as well.

I find season 2 to be frustratingly slow and teasing. But it's still good TV.

Season 2 feels more episodic and slightly less cohesive as a whole, even though a few of the individual episodes are very cohesive within themselves if that makes any sense. There’s almost more high moments in season 2 but they feel slightly less connected together. That’s not necessarily a critique, just a difference I noticed. I still enjoyed each season equally.

Yeah I liked season 1 and just couldn't finish episode 1 of season 2... I should try again but I'm afraid I just don't really get it.

I'm presently working my way through Severance and enjoying it. If a show like DARK is a 10/10 for me, I'd say Severance is 9/10 or so.

The trick is to activate the trial, or buy one month, then immediately cancel. You'll still have paid, and the subscription for that duration of time, but no need to remember auto pay.

I've gone through stages, when I was younger I was a hater just to hate (never to the degree you described), then I was indifferent but respected the products for what they were, then at a point I started disliking Apple for the way they handled iMessage/SMS/RCS for years. If not for that, I think I'd have stayed indifferent but respected that they offered things people wanted.

The way I see it now because of that dislike is not rational in a business sense, I understand why they do what they do, but they should stay in their lane at this point. Meaning they want it one way when it suits them, and then when it doesn't, they want it another way. They want a closed ecosystem with lock-in effects, fine, but then they do things like this with select services (Apple TV+, Apple Music) where they offer it to everyone, and I'm not buying it (literally). Keep your Apple TV+ and Apple Music to Apple hardware owners and fuck off, or take the open nature you apply to offering these services and apply it to the rest of the services and hardware in the ecosystem.

My wife recently had a baby, so lots of late nights holding a sleeping (?) baby. AirPods and Apple TV+ have been a boon. In last month I’ve gone through Slow Horses (really liked it), Silo (grew on me, waiting for next season), For All Mankind (less interested but it’s been fine), and now I’m watching the new Studio which I’m really liking. I haven’t done this much TV in like 10 years.

The show is very faithful to the books so far, but it’s great to get inside the heads of the main protagonists as they learn more about the world around them! And the world building never really slows down across all three books.

I find Apple TV+ to be hard to discover stuff in, so I'll list some of my recommendations.

    • Pachinko: A generational tale of a Korean Japanese family. Really beautifully shot and performed. Lots of drama and generational trauma put on the table since the tale begins, chronologically, during the Japanese occupation of Korea.

    • Acapulco: A really dumb comedy show that is full of extremely charming characters. It's got a lot of heart, and has the tendency of surprising you with wholesome goodness. A great thing to watch if you're feeling blue.

    • Hello Tomorrow! A drama with a bit of a comedic edge about a con man who is trying to sell people housing on the moon in a 1950s retro-futuristic world. It's a shame it wasn't very popular because I found it to be incredibly inspriring and aspirational. I don't want to give too much away, but the main character is incredibly well nuanced and isn't just a slub who isn't actually trying to con people.... And now I'm upset that it doesn't really have a satisfying ending.

    • The Big Door Prize: Some people might want to see this just because it has Chris O'Dowd. But it's a really touching comedy-drama about people trying to change and realize their dreams. I hope a third season is coming.

    • Schmigadoon! Probably the best musical parody series ever made, with lots of famous musical people. The first season has the main characters visiting the titular township parodying "classical" musicals (think Rogers and Hammerstein). The second takes place in Schmicago and parodies the more modern popular ones. I really love Jane Krakowki in particular in this series; she's not a major player in either season, but she really steals any scene she's in.

    • Mythic Quest: It's a comedy that's not for everyone. For a show about making video games and produced by Ubisoft (yes, seriously), I'm not entirely convinced that the writers have a high opinion of gamers or the game industry. But the characters really do grow on you over time; I'd love to be friends with Jo. But every few episodes they try to make it into a drama and those don't quite work for me personally.

Which is a shame because it was such a hearfelt show and I felt it was building towards something. I think there's a world where a third season could have rounded out the story and ended satisfyingly.

Which also ironically helps lead to cancellations, since people hold off on viewing. And the once it’s cancelled people for sure don’t watch it, which then probably further justifies the people who cancelled the show. There’s many shows on my lists that will never be watched.

I really wish all streaming services would green light two seasons of shows. If season 1 does bad, they can just use the second season to wrap it up how they can.

Seriously Apple TV has some great shows but it seems to hate my firefox config, in that it just freezes on the main page and will not let me navigate after one use of logging in, and requires a full cookie clear and some other nonsense for every attempt after that.

That said the only show I watch on there I don't see already mentioned is Slow Horses.

A "good enough" action spy thriller thing about a bunch of misfits, based on a book series I haven't read. Main selling point is Gary Oldman and scratching that 007 but not itch.

I watched Ted with my 11yo son and we loved it. Sure there are some sexual undertones here and there but nothing really worth noting in my book. A lot of it just went over my sons head like some of the sex jokes on Brooklyn 99 we're watching now. Funny thing going from Ted to 99 is that my son was confused why they didn't swear in 99 and kind of disappointed.
