I wondered how Rockstar would find a new slice of Americana to parody.

Modern day Florida is absolutely perfect for the series. The gangs, the (in my opinion) gaudy hip hop culture, the nursing homes and retirement communities, the gators, the trailer parks built on swampland, rednecks and religion, the populism and love for conservative politicians, natural disasters, private rehabs that fleece the most vulnerable, and so much more.

This game is going to be the most American thing ever made.

I always wondered if this series' satirical views of parts of the U.S. were at all accurate, being British, so I'm happy to hear that they've clearly done some good research!

If you've ever been to the non-Disney parts of Florida, you'll understand.

Florida, Texas, California, and New York are like the four corners of American culture. Florida is by far the most absurd.

I can't really do it justice, but here is the best way I can think to describe it.

Drive down a busy road in Florida and you'll likely pass by the following things REPEATEDLY (like dozens or hundreds of times over the course of an hour):

A mix of pristine cars from the last 30+ years - preserved by the weather and lack of road salt.

Pawn shops built across from pawn shops that are next door to bigger pawn shops. Usually with names like The Diamond Lounge or Million Dollar Pawn.

The gaudiest, most pimped out cars you've seen in your life.

Trailer parks built on swampland. The kind where you have to be careful your dog doesn't get eaten by gators.

Speaking of gators, you'll see them lounging by the side of the road anywhere there's a disgusting green pond, creek, or river.

Old people in expensive cars driving with one foot on the brake and one on the gas. They go way under the speed limit and piss off the young people who go way over the speed limit.

        Street races at night.

Dirtbikes being used legally or illegally on roads.

No helmets on motorcycles because there are no helmets laws.

GIANT American flags and pro-Trump displays. You'll also see some nasty, vulgar stuff against Biden or Clinton pretty frequently.

        Disney shit.

Swamp people and rednecks doing redneck stuff like having powered refrigerators sitting in the back of their pickup while they're going 70 down a highway. Just wild stuff.

Pools. Palm trees and beaches. Obviously.

License plates from literally everywhere in the country. As an American, that's something you don't usually see since it's such a big country and driving even to the state next door takes many hours.

Golf carts nowhere near a golf course. Hundreds of them. People use them to drive around their neighborhood and they usually decorate them.

        Retirement communities.

Guns everywhere. Open carry is common.

You'll hear Jimmy Buffett. But usually just that one song.

I could probably list a lot more. But yeah, that's really how Florida is. To be fair, there are also lots of wealthy areas and beautiful cities with very vibrant cultures. The night life is also very cool.

Edit: forgot to mention heroin and meth use.

I will also add that Florida has some of the most beautiful buildings and landscapes directly next to some of the ugliest urban sprawl in the country. Everything looks like an outlet mall. Mattress stores, law firms, churches, and liquor stores crammed into tiny plazas mile after mile. There are places where you just drive through massive stretches of single story commercial buildings. God it's so ugly.

As a former Florida resident, who has lived in Pompano Beach, Ft Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and downtown Miami, I can vouch for all that, and even more absurdities beyond.

E.g. Where I originally lived in Pompano had a huge pond in the middle of the apartment complex that usually had a few gators in it, which was right next to the complex's community pool... so a gator managing to get into the pool area and shutting it down until animal control could arrive to remove it was ridiculously common. And gators even somehow getting into totally fenced/walled off residential pools wasn't all that uncommon either. They're tenacious and clever little bastards.

And speaking of gators, and your mention of dogs getting eaten by them, a dog actually did go missing from that Pompano apartment complex while I was living there, and I don't think it takes a genius to figure out what likely happened to it. So it's not just trailer parks where that happens.

And I also once woke up to find my car resting on milk crates. As a naive Canadian kid, I thought that was just an urban myth or TV trope. But nope. Turns out thieves in Florida can disable your car alarm, tear it out of your car, smash your car's windows, steal your stereo, subwoofer, tires and rims, and will just leave the entire vehicle resting on milk crates afterwards... without anyone noticing (or caring), despite it having been parked in a brightly lit car park.

And the gated community where my parents lived in Boca would, every morning, have a literal dump truck filled to the brim with workers, packed in there like sardines, drive in and drop them off to do all the gardening, landscaping, and maintenance work. And at the end of the day they would all pile back into the dump truck, now full of garbage and trimmings, and head off back home.

And every Home Depot in Florida also usually has a line of (presumably undocumented) workers waiting in front of them. And people will just drive up to them in their pickup trucks, scream in Spanish from their window how many workers they need, have that many workers pile into the back of the truck, and then drive off to take them to some random job. I thought that was also a TV trope... but nope, turns out it's not.

And I was also going to point out the lack of methheads, and the insane shit they often get up to, in your comment, but I see that you edited it to include giving the meth problem a mention now. ;)

          Florida is fucking nuts.

p.s. If you're ever walking around in Florida and suddenly get overwhelmed by the smell of semen mixed with a hint of vomit and/or rotting fish... don't worry, it's probably just the callery pear trees in bloom... probably. :P

I never encountered this, so it is probably not common. We did have a lot of different types of palms everywhere though.

Drove a U-Haul truck down a road one time and forgot it was the street where all the day laborers usually wait. I felt bad because half of them got up to walk towards my truck and I just kept driving.

Then you've got the Midwest which is it's own separate thing, though the consolidation of all media markets into a gruel of ClearChannel radio and cable news has started to smudge it all up.

A virtual visit is the best the Sunshine State is going to get out of me - if Rockstar sees fit to release a PC version. Granted, they waited so long on GTAV that I got it five years after release when a friend gifted it to me.

Between the three main characters I thought there was a ton of variety and it took a good long time to get through it all. I'm always a little confused when I read this opinion online, it feels like folks aren't remembering properly, or they're judging the game by newer standards, or maybe their feelings toward the offline game are overshadowed by sour grapes for GTAO?

The graphics combined with the sheer density of stuff packed into each frame are insane.

In my mind there are only two ways they can fuck this up and not make it the absolutely uncontested GOTY and candidate for best game ever: One is if it runs like crap on its intended hardware or the density is severely degraded. The other is if 9/10 things you see are not things you can do. If I see a boat I expect to be able to commandeer that boat. If I see a gator in a corner shop I expect to be able to fight off gators in corner shops. If it's a vehicle I should be able to drive it, if it's a cool location I expect to be able to visit it, if an NPC is doing it in a cut-scene I expect to be able to do it (referring to activities not random animations).

I know, it just feels like sometimes people are comparing game engine capabilities in some theoretical vacuum. As if the engine that could render a person with a few more polygons and slightly better textures in a blank background would be "better" than the engine that could do a slightly worse job but fill an entire city with NPCs like that.

What's the point if you're going to ignore what the graphics bring to the game, if you don't care about making the game world feel alive and interesting?

The graphics in the trailer in the context of just how many things are going on in each shot are amazing.

I think the one way to fuck this up is to mess up the singleplayer to the point of irrelevancy while still using the spaghetti netcode they're using for multiplayer now. How many minutes I spent waiting for the game to load me into an online lobby rivals the amount of time actually played online.

However, the first random review that I played had this image, which completely reflects my experiences with it. I have played many games from that era. But even compared to the average game in 2008 or today, they went way further in this trend, to the point that it must be one of the greyest games I have ever played. GTA IV stands out even amongst its colorless peers.

I bet there's some mod to remove the grey filter. Edit: of course there is.

They were giving me goosebumps, while this one didn't do much for me. But I will definitely be playing it on release, provided it won't release as a buggy mess. I doubt it, but I also doubted that other games would release in a broken state. I guess we'll see.

I can't really say that I resonate with the social media / TikTok overtones though.

I anticipate this will actually be a core theme of the game. I believe every major Rockstar game has had a running theme of the protagonist struggling to adjust to the modern world in some way, from Tommy Vercetti trying to figure out the world after years in prison to Arthur Morgan's existential battle with the waning of the West. I remember a big part of Michael's story in GTAV was simply trying to figure out his kids' interests and the world around him after isolating himself for so long.

So I anticipate that social media and technology (which they've been emulating more and more with each GTA release) will be a bigger part but it will be from the lens of satirizing and struggling with it rather than just trying to make people do TikTok within the game.

I hope anyway, that would be a nightmare if it's played straight.

Since it first went 3D, GTA always satirizes the worst aspects of American culture. Given that this game takes place in current times, how could it not talk about social media and TikTok?

I'm still waiting for GTAV DLC. Online was okay but they should have put some effort back into supporting the reason I picked up GTAV in the first place. Then all the other shenanigans they've pulled, sending it DMCA notices for projects which don't actually infringe on their IP. While it was the parent company responsible for sending those notices, I have little reason to support R*.

IMO the game feel of GTA5 was pretty weak, even in 2013, at least the on-foot controls. I hope that running around, aiming and shooting, etc all feel a lot better.

I enjoyed running over lines of monks to get the score bonus back in the day, but I'm interested in some additional nuance at this point.

RDR2 was the first Rockstar game I bought. It was really disappointing as an open-world game goes. There’s a Jacob Geller video on the game that covers this well. But in short: the game’s meant to be enjoyed in a specific way. If you deviate even a little bit you crash into a brick wall.

If GTA6 is different I’d love to give them my money.

How is RDR2 supposed to be enjoyed? I personally found a headcanon diversion from the plot where Arthur leaves and is happy with his lady love and stopped playing before the end, but I never found a way to play where I felt like I was being railroaded, and I left the story behind for large swaths of my time with the game. Just wandered and gathered and hunted and saved random people on the road.

So it's no surprise that this wasn't your experience, since you didn't really focus on the story missions.

Yeah. The main story was fairly constrictive, in that you were following the story of a given man, without any of the choices we've come to expect in an RPG. We may get to choose who to shoot first, but if shooting is on the menu there's no sending it back and asking for a stealth section or choosing to leave some plum fool in jail.

I can accept this type of restriction, as long as the story is worth telling. The restriction I have in mind is gameplay related. I remember trying to flank some enemies once, and getting a mission failed screen, because the game wanted me to follow a precise, invisible link of checkpoints, and not deviate from them. That happens many times and it pulls away any creativity/freedom you might have when fulfilling your objective. This is in stark contrast with the open world design.

Interesting. I must have been doing exactly what the game wanted by just running straight through while shooting anything that moved, because I never had that experience.

There were some missions where I received the Mission Failed screen because I went to loot the enemies I had just killed for some ammo. The bodies, and where we fought, were somehow marked out of the mission zone when the next stage activated.

If you're interested in more details, I went into a lot of detail in my take on the game a couple of years ago. Essentially despite how amazing so much of the game was, there really did feel like a "proper way" to play it and it's what created the most friction between player and game. I think a lot of people felt it contemporaneously but it's somewhat forgotten as the game has faded into memory for many.

It was like a serious world that funny things could happen in, which made the funny things a little funnier imo.

        c) Don't want to get spoiled, as much as possible.
        d) I have the disposable income to make it work.

It's really d) that does the heavy lifting for everything else. If I was not in the position to consider it, I could absolutely tolerate waiting for the inevitable PC release.
