What is your Mandela effect moment?
I just rewatched the movie Constantine. It's one of my favorite movies. I can always watch it again. But I'm sure the ending was different. I didn't find any record of an alternate ending online.
details/spoilers
At the very end of the movie, he starts chewing a piece of (presumably) nicotine gum, but I'm certain that the ending I've seen before is that he lights a cigarette.
He spent the whole movie being contrary and a constant asshole to everybody except Rachel Weiss' character (can't blame him). The gum seems totally out of character.
Fruit of the Loom (the underwear maker) had a cornucopia in its logo, I don't care what they claim.
Yeah this one gets me. I very much remember the cornucopia.
I remember this so vividly and I didn't even know what a cornucopia was until hearing about this phenomenon.
Not quite the Mandela effect, but it's probably the only time I can tell this story here, so here goes.
When I was a very little kid, one of my favorite snacks was a strawberry-flavoured margarine from a local brand, named Delma. This specific variety was called "Delma Căpșunica" ("căpșunică" in Romanian means "little strawberry") and I absolutely adored it. In retrospect it was probably carcinogens on toast, but that's not the point.
It got discontinued pretty quickly, so it didn't have much of a lasting cultural impact, but it did on me. As I grew up, I had random moments when I remembered it existed, so I decided to look it up online.
For almost a decade, I wasn't able to find any traces of it existing on the internet, to the point of convincing myself I just hallucinated it or didn't remember it properly. When telling others about it, they had no recollection of such a thing existing, and my mom didn't remember either but wouldn't be surprised if we did have it in the pantry at some point.
Until a few years back, when I saw someone uploaded an ad from 2003, finally proving its existence! However the packaging is not the same one I remembered.
And then this reel appeared (it's from a YouTube reaction video from ZappyTV) and that's the packaging I remember!
And also a bunch of people confirming they used to eat it as kids. I'm not alone!
Anyway, there's probably so many examples of early-2000s products that didn't manage to be relevant enough for the internet to properly preserve them, especially in areas like Eastern Europe. I wonder what other things from my childhood got forgotten by everyone, including myself.
Oh, had a very similar childhood experience with movies though. The first time I saw Star Wars A New Hope, was the 90s re-release in theaters. That one that George Lucas tinkered with, and it included a scene with Han Solo talking to Jaba the Hutt in the beginning. I loved it, and couldn't wait to watch it at home. The ones we had at home were the original releases on VHS. I was very confused where that scene with Jaba the Hutt was.
Later, I asked my Mom about this. But she hadn't gone to the movies for the release and had no idea what I was talking about. Thought I was confused and talking about Return of the Jedi, which was originally the first appearance of Jaba the Hutt. For some reason, I never decided to have this conversation with my dad, who had been the one to take me to the rerelease. And so for years, every time I watched the VHS at home, and Jaba the Hutt didn't show up, it confirmed my mom's memory (which in fairness, was accurate for her). I didn't get to see the updated rerelease again for years later, when the updated editions released on DVD when I was a teen. Up to that point, I literally thought I had imagined it. Can't even blame my mom for her original response.
We should get ready for Avengers: Endgame's re-release to do the same thing for a new generation. Apparently the re-release will have extra scenes to tie it better to Doomsday.
I was trying to figure out what strawberry margarine would taste like, then I realized I will put strawberry jam and butter on toast, so it probably tastes like that. And it is delicious!
I'm glad you found your people :)
Yeah, basically a slightly inferior version of that. I did switch to butter and jam as an adult too, to fill that void :)
You never said how long the movies had to be, so of course it's that the supposed Beren"stain" family's name changed from Berenstein.
Also, this is tangential but I assert that most people who remember Nelson Mandela having died in prison would never have heard of him if he'd died in prison.
My theory is that if you were a kid in the U.S. in the late '80s or '90s and learned about apartheid in school, you learned about Nelson Mandela being imprisoned but you probably also learned about Steve Biko, who famously did die in prison. You may have watched Cry Freedom, about
Steve Bikoa white guy who knew Steve Biko. For any kid who wasn't a Peter Gabriel fan, it would be easy to mix up the names and years later be surprised that the guy you thought had died is not just alive but president.I seem to remember people finding old cassette tape releases that actually had the name spelled differently on the label. It wasn't 100% fabricated. There were legitimate misprints out there for certain limited releases.
ETA: Source. It was a VHS tape.
Spoiler rebuttal
Now that I’ve read your post, I remember it being gum since he was “on the up and up” after sacrificing himself to save the girl’s soul. The devil heals his lungs to stop him from going to heaven and because of that he switches to gum.
This is also what I recall.
Since this is all solidly in the realm of conspiracy already, based on this plus @rudism's one, my emerging theory is that these "patch upgrades" are being used to make the movies more puritanical. Reform the smoker. Drop the threesome.
I can subscribe to this conspiracy theory. But only for a few months.
...transformers: the movie, original 1986 theatrical run, optimus prime dies, fades to grey, and crumbles to dust in similar fashion to starscream a few scenes later...a year later, hasbro decides to bring back optimus and re-cuts his death scene to end just after he fades to grey, which was featured on the television broadcast and all the subsequent home-video releases, but not in the original script nor comic adaptation which both match what we saw in theatres...
...my friends and i know what we saw in theatres (we didn't even watch the film together) but officially "it never happened"...
(this was a longstanding point of of contention across the fan community back when i moderated the transformers usenet group; there may have been alternative prints in theatrical circulation back in 1986)
While I was visiting my family in Canada last month, I re-watched Office Space with my parents and nephews (probably for the dozenth time overall, but for the first time in well over a decade).
Of course everyone knows the scene where Peter (main character) asks Lawrence (mustachioed neighbor) what he would do with a million bucks, and Lawrence responds "two girls at the same time." However I was absolutely certain that there's a later scene (I thought maybe a mid- or post-credits scene) that called back to this, where Peter's outside their apartments and sees Lawrence hanging out with two women in a kiddy pool on the front lawn, leaning back with an arm around each of them, and Peter and Lawrence share a wink and a nod before Peter goes into his apartment. I was so confused when that scene never showed up, and spent like an hour searching the internet to find absolutely zero evidence that such a scene has ever existed. I have no idea why I was (and still kind of am) so convinced it exists, why I think I've seen it every prior time I've watched that movie, and why I can picture the whole thing so perfectly in my mind.
To be fair, I downloaded a copy of Dumb and Dumber a while ago and it had several different additional scenes that the version I grew up with in my home country that reeeeaaally changed the vibe. Way more sexual.
I have no issue with sex jokes, but the version I grew up with Lloyd and Harry being naifs, and them making sex jokes just really went against that.
So, this came up when my girlfriend decided to share the movie with some friends, as those jokes really killed the vibe for everyone. The raunchy jokes were all pretty much added for the unrated release, which happens to be the only one released in HD, as far as we could tell.
Ya, I wanted to watch it with the family and (sorry I'm not willing to pay more than $5 for a 30 year old movie) so I pirated it... My wife left when the guy at dinner horked the massive luggy.
I agree, I feel like I remember there being a call back to this as well! Weird...
(Click this if you want the link to the deleted scene that first-must-burn is talking about)
You're not wrong... Edit: spoiler tag removes the wiki-link, had to put it in manually...I don't think first-must-burn was talking about just any alternate ending not existing...
... but specifically that they remember an ending where Constantine lights up a cigarette in the end, as opposed to eating gum as he does in both the ending that first-must-burn recently watched and the alternate ending that you linked to.Yes, what I remember is...
...that he says something pseudo philosophical that makes it sound like all this has really changed his outlook. Then he lights up another cigarette in a very definite middle finger to the world.
And for what it's worth, the gum scene looks AI/CGI generated to me, out maybe it's just because it's so jarring to me.
Ah, I got it backwards in my head. I thought you meant the cigarette is the final cut and the gum was the cut version. Yeah as far as I know he always chewed the gum at the very end. I mean I could double-check the BluRay I have but I'm pretty sure...
The end of ATLA. So I was starting college when the last season aired. I watched the finale live on Nick.
Ending
I remember the Lion Turtle telling Aang about energy bending in their initial meeting. Of course they replay it as a memory later. But I cannot find that version online. I know in my heart that is what happened though 😆
Wait a second I remember being confused about this my last watch, also having seen the finale movie premiere on Nick.
I believe you.
Mine have to do with vegetation. Every few years I'll see a new plant and then it'll be everywhere and when I ask about it people will have said it's been here forever. The first was Valeriana rubra, which I first noticed in 2018 and was informed by my mom that we had it in our back yard for my entire childhood. The second was in 2022 Amaryllis belladonna. It looks like something that would pop up from a grave and is suuuuper obvious. Again, very off that I never noticed them before. They are prolific.
Anyway, my wife and I call these "patch upgrades" now. Like we got a new set of plants uploaded into our head.
...similar perceptual effect to when you buy a new car and suddenly notice a surge of the same model in traffic...
Maybe it was just that cartoons lied to me for dramatic effect, but I could’ve sworn that the Venus flytrap was the only carnivorous plant and that it was from some exotic location like a jungle or something, and not the wetlands of North and South Carolina.
It was only a few months ago that I found out that there are in fact, at least five true carnivorous plant species. And it’s only been within the last year or so that I found out that Venus flytraps are from the Carolinas.
To be fair, I did think the quicksand was going to be a bigger deal than it turned out to be… those bastards lied to me.
Ooh, I like that. I'm going to use that one.
The popular chicken sandwich fast food Chikfila was always Chikfila, and I still refuse to acknowledge the conspiracy that it's spelled "Chickfila".
Minor in any case, but while I do recognize some others (like the fruit of the loom one), this one I feel like I'm on an island. It was stylized dammit!
I wonder if this might have been because of the really popular ad campaign they had with the cows holding crudely painted sandwich boards that said “EAT MOR CHIKIN” ?
Jaws’ girlfriend in the end of the one Bond movie had braces, matching is metal teeth.
Turns out she didn’t have braces.
For some reason, I keep thinking Warren Buffett is dead. I swear he's died three times now — but then he shows up in the news again and I'm all, "Wait... what? Didn't he die, like, a year ago?"
One of these days he's going to die for real and I'll think he's still alive.
Possibly thinking of the death of his investing partner and Berkshire vice-chairman Charlie Munger who died in 2023.
Oh, it could totally be something like that. I might have skimmed over a handful of headlines worded like "Warren Buffett investing partner dead" or similar and took it to mean Buffett himself was dead. I don't really follow celebrity news too closely, so there could be all kinds of people out there I think are dead!
Can’t find the seahorse emoji
They dropped it because it wasn't as good as the A-horse or the B-horse.
I know a game which used emojis initially for its sprites, and it has a seahorse they added in the same style as emojis, maybe that’s what you’re thinking of? The game is Super Auto Pets in case you want to confirm if your memory of a seahorse emoji matches the game’s art style?
Nah :)
The seahorse emoji is a known instance of the Mandela effect. It’s particularly fun to me as it was briefly present in AI models themselves and caused them to have a cognitive breakdown.

I experienced this cognitive breakdown with Claude and it’s one of the freakiest things I’ve ever dealt with in my AI work.
The GIF of the guy in a black shirt and sunglasses smoothly deploying a folding chair by rapidly extending his arm and then sitting down. In this new reality that has apparently always been Jason Momoa.
I swear there was a version of The Police’s “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” that dealt with the teacher forcing himself on the student.
I have a memory of a Saturday night live spoof of the song about that… maybe with Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell?
I would swear David Lynch's Dune had a scene where Muad'dib is being shown a cache of water in a seitch. There's something about how the walls sre so smooth that water doesn't stick to the sides where it would evaporate, since water is so precious they cannot lose a drop. I think this scene is in the book, in reality. The last time I saw the movie I don't remember seeing it, and yet it's very vivid in my mind. Kyle MacLachlan gazing up in awe, then a tight closeup of the water and the dark gray-yellow-brown wall of the cache with droplets running down with an echoey droplet sound. Music rises. Very Lynchian.
I know the scene you are talking about. I can hear the echoey drop sound right now.
There have been so many cuts of that movie, I believe that is real and floating around out there.
JFC, thank you. I could not for the life of me figure out how I hallucinated that.
You have many such caches?
Many times many. And only a few of us know them all.
this? https://clip.cafe/dune-1984/water-s17/
Thanks but that's not it. The dialogue is too significant. The part I'm thinking of was about the smoothness of the cache walls. You know, boring engineering stuff that can get cut without anyone really caring (except me apparently lol)
It’d be interesting to see which version has it. So many versions.
for me its always been "ba dum dum tss" and other version being "ba dum tss" feels like something is missing like when you listen to the song they yoinked the nokia ringtone from
How interesting. I am fully in the bad-dum-bum-tsss universe.
I saw it in the theater and remember the same thing, and it is absolutely not just your imagination.
EDIT: He even stubs the cigarette out in his own blood.
