Introductions | March 2025

The previous introductions thread was waaaaay back in June of 2023, figured it might be time for a new one, eh?

This is a place for new and existing users to post an introduction with a few fun facts about themselves. You will find the post box at the bottom the page. Maybe say "Hi!" to someone else you see while scrolling down?

If you like, you can also write something about yourself in your profile. See "Edit your user bio" on the settings page. Anyone who clicks on your username will see it in your profile. (It appears on the right side of the page.)

You can find out more about how to use Tildes in this topic: "New users: Ask your questions about Tildes here!.

Some sample questions you *could* answer (but not required!)
  • How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?
  • How did you choose your username?
  • What are your interests? (This could be music, tech, art, video games, board games, books, anything!)
  • A/S/L (the standard old school intro for an old school kind of forum, but not required!, we value our pseudonymity around here!)
    • for those born post 1998: age/(sex|gender|identifier|pronouns)/location
      • Example: 27/nb trans woman (she/her)/USA or 54/M/USA or 907/Timelord/Gallifrey
    • You don't have to follow the structure, or include it at all!
  • What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.
  • Do you want other users to PM you from this thread?
  • Give us a fun fact or link, if there is anything to know about tilderinos, we value knowledge sharing!
Here is a template if you need something to kickstart your intro
**How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?**

**How did you choose your username?**

**What are your interests?**

**A/S/L (age/(gender|pronouns|identifier)/location)**

**What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.**

**Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?**

How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?

Four days. I got invited by @winther. It was kind of funny how I ended up here. The absolute TLDR is that in late 2023, I made a New Year’s resolution to delete all of my social media (and other) accounts and stay off them in 2024 as a challenge (with a goal of staying off them in perpetuity). That succeeded. I have since gotten more into writing. During 2024 I used Substack, but got tired of it. Out of desperation, I googled something about “simple blogging platforms” and somehow found Bear Blog. Then one day I wrote a post on there inviting people to a Discord server that I specifically designed to work more like IRC. Winther then joined and eventually mentioned Tildes to me.

How did you choose your username?

Just my first and last name. I have long given up on anonymity on the Internet. lol

    What are your interests?

Writing and reading (non-fiction), YouTube (history, geography, technology, psychology, and more).

    A/S/L (age/(gender|pronouns|identifier)/location)

35, male, Latvia. I’m from Portugal. My wife is Latvian.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

I have been unemployed since May. 😂 💀 Been really struggling to find a job... Before that, I worked at a warehouse since late 2018. In my spare time, I give dating and relationship advice on the Internet (been doing that since 2016 as a hobby, which is my greatest passion), and engage with the interests listed above.

Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?

    Sure.

Give us a fun fact (or a link!)! If there is anything to know about tilderinos, it's that we value knowledge sharing!

I don’t understand why people are so indifferent about this topic, but it really riles me up. I think that copyright, patent, and trademark laws have gone far beyond their original intent, and rather than encouraging innovation, have actually only served to stifle it, and have allowed large corporations to engage in anti-consumer practices, completely unchecked. I think that the concept of “intellectual property” is as dumb as it sounds (you can’t “own” ideas), and the current “tech fatigue” that we are experiencing, is the final warning that our society is being given, before the entire system collapses. We are one humanity. There is no logical reason why we should withhold knowledge from each other. The public domain ought to be steadily enriched so that we can continue to improve upon it. I will die on this hill a thousand lifetimes over. And if you are willing to give me the benefit of the doubt, then I invite you to watch my favorite documentary series of all time, Everything is a Remix, by Kirby Ferguson.

South. The region of the Algarve, to be precise. I miss it dearly, but can’t imagine myself going back. Portugal has become a bit of a fourth-world country in recent years. 😅 Bureaucracy, healthcare, jobs, housing, everything is on the brink of collapse. There have been three successive governments in the last three years, and the latest one was dissolved a few days ago. It’s still a beautiful, sunny place, with lots of great food, and a welcoming culture, but it’s become unlivable to poor people like me.

Latvia is very flat, very green (one of the few countries in Europe where more and more trees are growing), full of beautiful forests, lakes and swamps, but also cold and cloudy most of the year. It snows heavily in the winter. The food is good. The people tend to be distant. In every other way that I complained about Portugal though, it’s doing a lot better. If Russia doesn’t invade or nuke us, then Latvia (along with Estonia and Lithuania) is a fast-developing nation that could become a great place to move to in the future.

Language is very hard to learn though (and very necessary).

You give (gave?) dating and relationship advice for a living?!?! That's super cool! Do you yourself have a lot of first person experience, advanced degrees in psych or is it a be super reasonable and empathetic and communicate well kind of thing? I do it for free without people wanting advice lol but how did you find this role? Asking because when I was young I religiously followed a newspaper column on relationships: a man and woman writer would both respond side by side to the same question, and it was amazing.

In 2022 I gave a five-part lecture to a group of 15 young people ages 16 to 25 about dating and relationships, but on the Internet, I have chatted with thousands of people from all walks of life (all ages, locations, cultures, you name it). I love doing it.

And no. I don’t have any education in the field. All of my experience is anecdotal, and all of my advice is based on common sense (and also noticing patterns after talking to thousand of people). I have also talked to many dozens in person, as opportunities arose. You’re correct that I’m all about empathy and communication, but I can also give you very practical advice.

I am writing a book on dating and relationships. I am 11 chapters in. 11 more to go. I’m hoping to get it done before the end of this year. I also started running this little blog, where I aggregate real stories to serve as examples.

How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?

2019 or so, but I knew when the site was launched ~2018, not sure how. I am terminally online and always looking for new communities, this is one of the few that has stuck in my regular rotation.

How did you choose your username?

I was an EDM/jazz producer, not a good one, but I needed a name. I was using 'Drannoc' everywhere as I was major fantasy nerd and thought that it fit, but I've always loved the letter 'X' (which has sadly been co-opted by an unsaid person) and I was just getting big into Skrillex and dubstep and decided to follow suit. Here we are, 15 years later.

    What are your interests?

Roboticist here, so building and dreaming about robots! Hardware hacking, automation, music (industrial metal, industrial bass - dubstep, dnb, psytrance, nu-metal, pop punk, metalcore), rockets and satellites, nuclear energy, alternative living communities, renewable material science, physical manuals (of all kinds), retro tech, transhumanism/posthumanism, extropianism, technocracy (1890s - 1965).

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

I run a robotics company called DNX Industries, and a software laboratory called WIZRD Laboratories. I am also a contractor for $[MegaCorp-1] as their Systems Automation Architect in their Automation Lab.

Been chocobean since the IRC / ICQ days . Origins is from a chocolate covered, fruit jelly bean snack: the product has a commercial in 90s HK, with a catchy jingle.

18/F/California was a bit ago, currently living in Atlantic Canada

I work remotely, in a software adjacent role. I love working remotely and it's what enabled our family to afford extremely affordable real estate. I'm very passionate about giving that opportunity to as many families as possible and have a burning hatred for unnecessary RTO for humanitarian and environmental reasons.

Fun fact! In 2018 no demonyms was voted the most popular demonyms. Probably "Tildos" is my least favorite one. Tilderinos I don't hate.

Fun fact! Camels have leathery hot sand parking patches on their knees and their tummies. True Facts was very interesting; camels are far weirder than I had realised.

Apologies, RTO as Return To Office: the roads were so nice during COVID, and there was good evidence that even animals got a break from our air/noise/light/vibration pollution. I am modestylly involved with affordable housing in a small town, to encourage spreading out a bit as well, but it's so hurtful to the economically struggling when they're forced to live in ridiculously overpriced shoeboxes because they need to be close to the office: the poor get poorer.

Roads are dangerous; long commutes hurt marriages; parents are too tired to hang with their kids after 8 hours of work + 2 on the road; sitting for those 10 hours is bad for our health and also as a result our communities look desolate and devoid of life. :< I'm very unhappy with forcing people back to office

My quality of life has so dramatically improved that the concept of rush hour is now a faint memory: recently I took a rideshare for a mere 14km (8.7mi) from Granville Island to Richmond, at 230pm on a weekday, and was amazed that it was almost 5 when I arrived. Thank goodness I wasn't in a taxi, but I also felt terrible for my driver averaging $10/hr, when minimum wage is $17.85/hr.

Hi, I am lou! Lou is not my real name. I have three dogs and an 18-months-old son. I am Brazilian, male, ADHD, 42 years old. What I love the most about my regionl Brazil is the food, the warmth of the people, and the sincerity most people have in their expressions. What I hate is the heat and the noise. The average temperatures where I live are between 28C and 38C wich high humidity. Because of that, I must say that the objects I love the most are my ar conditioner and the walls of my office. I sometimes dream about moving somewhere colder but that seems to become less possible each day. I like being a dad sometimes. Other times I don't. I like people sometimes, other times I don't. I phantasize about living at the top of a mountain, completely alone. As long as there's fast internet, that is. I phantasize a lot. I try to be less active on Tildes these days because this is basically a small town and it is easy to be noticed for all the wrong things. I wish to be a writer. I may change my focus from science fiction to magical realism in the next project. Science weighs on me. I'm a Latin American after all. Maybe I should own it.

I'm very literal about things and nothing is really magical to me. So when people ask some things, I don't do platitudes. I don't romanticize, I don't select. Childbirth is fucking hell on earth for anyone involved, and I don't erase that just because it is beautiful to see my son cry the first time, you know? I remember the moments after my son was born, it wasn't magical. Going back home with him, there was no magic at all. The world was exactly the same. I don't get to feel any magic. It's all in my head equally. I'll talk about love and death in the same sentence. I'll make a comment about the realities of sex work during breakfast. I'll casually discuss my own death and comment on how a dead body tastes like during light conversation. There's no difference to me, and the only difference I make is a consideration on what others find acceptable. Not me.

The good and the bad, the appropriate and the innapropriate. It's all the same.

Sure romance is wonderful, but I don't erase the fact that dating is fucking horrible too. It's all the same. The good and the bad, it's all part of the same existence. That sounded very Zen, which makes me sound deep. So I'll leave this in.

Sometimes I get really excited about something and people interpret it in all the wrong ways. Like, if someone shares an interest with me they may thing I'm coming on to them, but I am just interested in the subject. If I am talking about horror or true crime, they may think I am an evil person. If I'm talking about WW2 they'll think I'm a right-wing nut, and if I talk about logic they'll think I'm, well... a right wing nut. Being ADHD, this takes some specific shapes, even onlie. For example, if I answer to quickly, there is a tendency to think I am pissed off, but I just do things fast. I also write lots of things wrong and have to edit a bunch, and that also can be mistaken with emotional unraveling.

So I have to control how excited I am about things and that's a bummer. That was a little random. It's annoying that everything has to mean something.

Pavê is awesome that is for sure.

I have to say abará. It is the kind of food you should only eat in Salvador - Bahia. Afro Brazilian cuisine.

You have to eat it to understand. Explaining is useless. Anyway, here's a description:

Abará is a steamed cake made from ground black-eyed peas, wrapped in a banana leaf, and cooked in palm oil. It is a traditional dish in African cuisine and Bahian cuisine. It is also part of Candomblé rituals. It is made from the same dough as acarajé; the only difference is that abará is steamed and includes seasonings and dendê oil in the dough, while acarajé is fried. (translated from Wikipedia)

Also, if I am allowed, I would say Brazilian/Italian/Portuguese pizza. Not crazy pizza young people make a fuss about, but rather traditional pizzerias that follow older traditions that are not necessarily 100% pure Italian. The last pizza I ate in São Paulo was like that. It was a place that opened in the 1950s, but I unfortunately cannot remember the same. They had a tomato/fish sauce that you ate with wonderful bread... I could eat that all day. I would be fat in São Paulo.

Your note that nothing is magical to you reminds me of a short video I recently saw (but cannot find a link to):

A wizard and their companion see a shooting star. The companion suggests making a wish, and the wizard solemnly answers that wishes doing don't really work for wizards. This is because, in their pursuit of arcane knowledge, wizards must learn how the magic works, and learning how it works deprives them of "random, mysterious acts of magic" in exchange for being able to do the magic, like shooting fireballs from their hands. The companion, concerned, asks "Is it worth it?" The wizard answers:

      "Fuck yeah."

On the internet, I'm probably best-known (which is to say, basically not known at all) for my contributions on r/CFB (e.g. 1, 2, 3). I also help moderate some subreddits. I also contribute to Open Street Map, but I'm uneasy about sharing that here because it would help narrow down my location very specifically.

    • Irish language speaker interested in the potential advantages of social media to the community
    • A writer of spec and high-concept fiction
    • Interested in coding and data science. I studied machine learning a few years before LLMs took off so I have no knowledge of them whatsoever

All my schooling was through Irish from age 4 to 12. The next town over from me is a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking region) so a lot of my teachers were native speakers that commuted from there. After that I went into a more mainstream secondary school that spoke English.

No Irish in my family, as far as I can tell the last native speaker was my great-great grandmother who pulled the popular move of those days by raising her kids with only English, leaving a language barrier between grandchild and grandparent.

It's an asymmetric chess-like game. The defending player has a king that starts in the centre and must reach one of the corners to escape, plus some soldiers for protection. The attacking player has the king surrounded with twice as many soldiers and is trying to capture him before that. All pieces move like rooks in chess but don't capture like rooks. You capture pieces by placing your own pieces on either side of it.

Every region the vikings settled has its own variant; the main difference being the size of the board. The Irish variant has the smallest board and number of pieces, which makes it a very tight game - your first mistake is usually fatal. Conveniently for me, this also means fewer pieces to make ;)

How did you choose your username?

I used a password manager to generate it. This one felt amusingly paradoxical.

    What are your interests?

I enjoy learning more about the cool things that science makes possible, from space rockets to microphotography. I'm fond of speculative fiction, because exploring new and remixed literary worlds is one of the few guaranteed ways to get myself out of a thinking rut. I like some video games for that same reason, but I like games even more for their amazing soundtracks -- and I collect those, too.

I'd like to learn more about how to make software development more sustainable and secure, especially when it comes to the squishy human side of things. This usually means everything from usability studies to database query optimization.

I'm especially grateful to the folks who continue to share, but also write, about all of their hobbies and interests too. Keeping the original 'spirit' of the Internet alive, even if it's off the beaten path of the Top 1000 sites, never fails to make me feel more hopeful about life in general.

Do you want other users to PM you from this thread?

6 years. I can't remember what was going on in 2018, but I was probably pissed off at reddit for one reason or another.

How did you choose your username?
    I didn't. It chose me.

    What are your interests?

    • I'm a filmmaker and writer by trade, and a bit of a generalist creator with my spare time. I just kind of do shit.
    • I like learning about science and technology. I even like watching math and physics videos that I don't understand.
    • I like to cook a lot but I hate following recipes. I usually only follow them when I want to make something in its traditional style, or to learn a new technique.
    • I like to come up with business ideas, do all of the market research, write a business plan, and then never actually execute/launch. I'm not being tongue-in-cheek, I legitimately enjoy doing that.

    A/S/L (age/(gender|pronouns|identifier)/location)
I'm sorry, my responses are limited. You must ask the right questions.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.
The best part about filmmaking is that it's collaborative. I'm self-employed now, but when I had a team, I just loved supporting their talents. There is no better feeling than helping people bring out the best in themselves. I hope someday I can grow enough to hire my own team. Sounds corny, I know, but I just hate seeing my friends/colleagues demotivated and hating their jobs. I want to be the antithesis to a shitty job.

Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?

The very first time I ever played Pokémon Gold, I found a shiny Paras, but I hadn't even gotten to the Red Gyarados yet, so I didn't know it was special. The difference in colors was not very apparent. I definitely thought the sparkly animation was weird, but I was just like "wow, they really pulled out all the stops for Paras in this game." So anyway, I started blasting.

    hi!

How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?
I found out about Tildes literally last night... so probably a little over 12 hours ago? I actually stumbled upon this looking at a thread on a Reddit alternative (lemmy) about Reddit alternatives. I did some digging around and figured I jived with the website's philosophy and values, so I registered for an account as soon as I could find an invite (thank you to the mod that runs the invite megathread on the tildes subreddit, by the way).

How did you choose your username?
My username is a shortened version of my (usual) online persona bkburo, which itself is a shortened version of bukuburo. There's really no further meaning to the name other than it was what I named my Animal Crossing island and I liked the way it looked and sounded, so I adopted it as my online identity.

    What are your interests?
A lot of just simple media consumption stuff--TV shows (here's my trakt, and my anilist), movies (here's my letterboxd), video games (here's my backloggd), books sometimes (I have a storygraph but it's not as fleshed out as the others lol), and music. Outside of that, it's mainly just browsing the web, watching YouTube videos, all that stuff.

I have a strong interest in tech and love computers, phones, all that jazz. I'm

22, male (he/him), Texas. Please don't get at me from where I'm from, I promise I'm not a fascist.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.
I graduated relatively recently and am now working IT for my alma mater. Mostly just customer support, fixing people's internet and computers and other typical help desk stuff, but trying to branch out into sysadmin stuff... hopefully. If you work in IT and have any career advice I'd love to connect and hear what you have to offer!

Everything I do in my spare time just comes back to my interests. I'm trying to volunteer my time and do some more "meaningful" things, but still figuring all of that out.

Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?
Yes, please do! I'd love to get familiar with new people on a new site.

Well, there was this article a few days ago -- which is probably true. But if I had to put everything I've learned over two decades into a short list?

      • You'll get paid to do the most stupid things ever. Nearly every job is 80% being a gofer (where's that document I was looking for? how do I do X again?), 20% keeping the lights on, and <1% solving challenging technical problems.
      • Channel your ennui into a useful hobby. Learn a different operating system, programming language, set up a home network from scratch, whatever. But don't do it to check a box: do it to solve a problem or make your life better somehow. You'll remember it better that way.
      • Have a sense of pride and care, but not too much. Your co-workers will be how you get better jobs in the future if they remember you fondly, and they are also best positioned to make your life miserable if they don't like you. So reserve most of your empathy for the people on your team, but remember to keep some empathy for yourself: you matter, and so does your mental health.
      • Politeness costs nothing. Smile, nod, quietly make a note of who the annoyance was, and vent to your friends later. You should do this even when someone is talking utter nonsense about Gartner quadrants, blockchains, quantum, and AI. (Sorry if that's your manager, though. Find a different one.) The exception is real verbal abuse: don't stand for it, don't let it slide, and don't let bullies go unchallenged.
      • Layoffs happen. They're not your fault and you should never feel bad about them -- whether you're caught up, or feeling survivor's guilt for having escaped. (Unless you're an executive. Then it was your fault, and you should feel bad.)
      • Don't worry about perfection. 99% of the time, you're not actually a rocket scientist, saving real human lives, or making the world a better place. Most IT work is really the equivalent of duct-taping things together, and there is a never-ending pile of tickets waiting for your attention. Learn when something is "good enough" and when to invest extra time fixing annoyances.

Much appreciated! I think that all of what you've noted definitely still applies even after two decades.

All in all, I've always believed that if you're going to survive in this sort of field--or in any tech field, frankly--you've got to have some sort of passion and genuine interest in what you're doing. So I've always taken every opportunity in this job to learn something or at least get some sort of enjoyment out of it... even in the most tiring moments. I'll have to keep this list on hand for the future!

I don't work in IT, but there are a lot of Tildes users that do, and I'm pretty sure there have been a few career advice threads recently. Might be a good opportunity to learn about the search bar on the right side of the Tildes homescreen. JCPhoenix is a mix of two my online names I've used in the past: PhoenixFire, a name I used when I was much younger like in middle/high school, and Jaedan Chantes, which is a name I tend to use in MMOs, such as Eve, FFXIV, etc.

    What are your interests?

Gaming (MMOs, JRPGs, city builders/colony managers mainly), travel, technology, politics & current events, public transit, messing with my homelab when I'm not lazy, motorsports (primarily Formula 1, but also IndyCar and Formula E). Also napping. I kinda want to take a nap right now...

I have a 12-13yo Dell Poweredge T620. 2x Xeon E5-2460, with 80GB RAM, ~2.5TB storage. Also got it from a previous job! I used to work at an MSP (contracted IT) and us techs could often take home hardware that clients were replacing. So we could play and experiment and learn stuff.

I have EXSi on it, with several VMs. I have a few Windows Servers with Active Directory, which are acting as DCs. Not all my computer here at home are domain joined, but enough are that it's good for testing GPOs and other AD stuff. Though I haven't messed with that in while. There's an Ubuntu Server VM that primarily hosts my Wireguard VPN server and then a simple script for DDNS syncing. It used to host my Ubiquiti Unifi network controller here, but I eventually just bought Unifi hardware that does that. I also have Pi-Hole and UPS software VMs.

Surprisingly, I personally haven't hosted any games on this. My Minecraft hosting days are far behind me...I don't miss those lost days and weekends lol. Though I did have a friend who wanted to host a "V Rising" server, so I let him do so until he got bored. That was kinda fun playing server/network admin for him.

Lately, I've been learning how to do backups of these VMs via Veeam. Unfortunately, I've run out of space on external HDDs for those backups, so now I'm thinking of turning another server (which has been a glorified footrest under a desk) I have into a storage server of sorts.

This is a holdover from when I was young and edgy and thought it was clever or something. I used it at LAN parties back in the day and it was cathartic to be fragging my friends in the most zen ways possible haha.

    What are your interests?
Oof. What am I not interested in? I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, so getting that under control means my actual hobbies have slowed down, but I'm interested in just about anything. 3D printing, gaming, gardening, aerospace, pottery, welding, homelab, homebrew, distilling, scuba diving, photography, TTRPG, LARP. If you have a niche knowledge of something, I want to learn it. Probably so I can use it to make a very bad pun.

Probably the one that got the most longevity was homebrewing. I did that for about 10 years, and at one point thought about opening my own brewery(who hasn't?).

I still miss being a welder, but my body doesn't. Kind of the same with being the mechanic. I worked on turbo-propellar single and dual engine personal aircraft. That was a pretty great job too, but some of the cleaning chemicals we worked with are pretty nasty, so I decided I needed to get out. I grew up around computers and leveraged THAT hobby/interest into a career.

I'm interested in offline tools to work with and organize data (/r/selfhosted, /r/datahoarder, but also /r/dataengineering). I spent a lot of my free time over the past few years adding to this "library" project--whenever I used an ad-hoc script more than a couple times I'd figure out a way to add that as a subcommand.

I've been a Linux fanboy ever since my older brother brought home a KNOPPIX 3 CD

Recently, I discovered the Queen Mary 2 and have been daydreaming an 8-day transatlantic from New York to the UK even though I know it is detrimental to the environment, mostly 70+ year old co-passengers, and not even that luxurious of a voyage--it still has some marginally diminishing mystique as it occupies my headspace these last couple days. I've never been on a big boat except the ferry to Mackinac Island.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

It would be really awesome to have a job that requires me to investigate some "small" data (eg. Excel, CSV, JSON, etc) to really flesh out the plot and eda library subcommands.

I also like working with GIS data (spatial data engineering) and doing exploratory analysis or scaling up existing processes.

Right now I'm r/PovertyFIRE retired but still doing consulting gigs when the opportunity presents itself. I keep applying to interesting jobs too but haven't had much success with that so just trying to make the most out of every day and building out my own life purpose :-)

My job title is Software Engineer, though IMO that sounds a bit over-the-top and I usually go with "programmer" or "computer toucher" unless I'm trying to sound important. Most of my hobbies are extending the computer-touching out in directions that are more fun but harder to convince people to pay me for: current projects I have going on include modding buttons onto a music player, designing some custom tiny motor controllers for insectweight combat robots, a tool-assisted speedrun collaboration project with a friend, and the early planning stages of like twelve other things that may or may not ever get made.

I also do gardening and woodworking, though haven't done much of either recently, and I picked up electric guitar again this year after not playing for 5ish years.

Also a lot of my time/brain cycles recently have been spent pondering various aspects of moving and house-building.

Plants don't actually "grow toward the sun". Light makes them grow less, but the effect is localized, so if you have a bit of stem going sideways and light is only hitting the top half, the bottom half will grow faster than the top half. It's the same sort of effect as a bimetallic strip, but less metallic and more plantic.

I was really excited to be on the ground floor of a new website/social media forum so I thought it would be cool if I had my first name. Like if your email was mike@gmail.com. Plus, when I was reading about the philosophy of the site and the focus on respectful discussions, I felt like having my username as my name was some sort of gesture of goodwill, like I would never say anything here I wouldn't say publicly.

Unfortunately, some bastard took Anthony and ran off with it. Never seen him, either. Worst part is I could've done something like Anthony_2.0 but I was too flustered in the moment.

I think I technically first made this account in 2018, when I think it was @llb who showed the site to our friend group. But I didn't really start using Tildes in earnest until the Reddit exodus a couple years ago.

How did you choose your username?

I've been using this username since I was around 7 or 8 and needed to make my first email address in order to make a Neopets account. There was a little character named Sparks in a minigame in a Jumpstart educational game I'd been playing a bunch at the time, but ofc "sparks" was already taken, so I added my initials.

    What are your interests?

I'm fascinated by language and love the scientific study of how it works through linguistics. I studied this in uni and dipped my toes into doing academic work in the field then, but nowadays my main way of interfacing with it is through conlanging (creating artificial languages for fun/art). Not exactly the same way of approaching language there, of course, but I really enjoy the creative aspect mixed with engaging with all the cool shit languages can do.

I'm also a fan of tabletop gaming, both board games and ttrpgs. I have a handful of friends locally who I sometimes get together and olay boardgames with, and I particularly enjoy hidden-role games like Blood on the Clocktower. I wish my Mandarin were up to snuff so that I could play jubensha (as most of my local board game friends are Taiwanese and they already own some good ones). For ttrpgs I'm mostly into indie stuff, and I'm currently in an online indie ttrpg "book club" run by the creators of Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy, a ttrpg that's in beta atm but is already the best system I've encountered for running mysteries and other investigative stories -- something that's woefully underdeveloped in most ttrpgs, even ones that sometimes try to do it like Call of Cthulhu.

I also really enjoy videogames, both playing them and learning about game design through YouTube videos and the like. I don't really play any big multiplayer games, though, and I have a preference for indie games. I love games with a good story, and that can win me over almost regardless of gameplay. My favorite kinds of games are games that feature detective work/investigation as part of the gameplay (some examples: The Outer Wilds, Return of the Obra Dinn, the Case of the Golden Idol, Hypnospace Outlaw, The Roottrees Are Dead). I'm also a big fan of point-and-click adventure games, both new and old, as well as city builders/colony sims (some favorites include Dwarf Fortress, Oxygen Not Included, and Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic)

    A/S/L (age/(gender|pronouns|identifier)/location)

I'm in my late 20s, and I'm nonbinary (they/them pronouns please). I'm living in Germany (Berlin specifically) atm, but I was born and raised in the US (Ohio specifically).

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

I got my master's focusing on NLP/machine learning, and since I realized academia wasn't a work environment I wanted to continue in for the time being, I've moved to working as a data scientist. Currently job hunting, as I lost my last job back in October.

I'm also currently taking German classes three days a week to hopefully get my B1 certificate when I take the test in May. The only things I need to apply for German citizenship and/or permanent residency atm are a B1 certificate and a job, so I'm really hoping I can get both of those bases covered as soon as possible.

I double-majored in Chinese in undergrad and one of the reasons I'm still glad I did is how much I love Chinese cuisine. I'm getting back into cooking it more often at home, and if anyone else is interested in learning more about it, I cannot recommend Chinese Cooking Demystified enough -- they're one of the best English language sources when it comes to this stuff, easily. They also post their recipes in written form on their Substack.

I'm a big fan of stir fries using the Yuxiang flavor profile, which can be used in a variety of different dishes. The name means "fish fragrant," but it doesn't contain any fish and it's typically not served with seafood. It uses fermented chilis along with a sweet, vinegary sauce. It's a very versatile flavor profile, so you can use it with a lot of different ingredients in the actual stir fry! Here is Chinese Cooking Demystified's video on the flavor profile from a few years ago, as well as one of their more recent videos that contains a recipe for yuxiang omelette (which I made myself earlier this week and can confirm is both delicious and not that difficult).

Another thing I've fallen in love with is zhacai, a type of Chinese pickled mustard greens that is just an excellent ingredient to have around in the kitchen. Chinese Cooking Demystified's video How to Love Zha Cai is a great intro to it, and you can find it at almost any Chinese grocery store. I made (and loved) the cucumber zhacai salad from that video this morning (though without the fresh chili, as I didn't have one on hand and the zhacai packet I used was already a little spicy for me). I've also definitely just eaten zhacai over rice as a meal on some of my lazier days.

Most states in Germany have universities that are tuition-free even for non-EU citizens. While pretty much every bachelor's degree is in German, many master's programs in STEM fields are offered in English. I knew I didn't want to jump from my Bachelor's in linguistics straight to a PhD, and I also knew it would be smart to gain more technical skills that could get me a job in industry if academia didn't work out. Helpfully, my thesis advisor in undergrad was German, and she helped recommend some good programs and pointed me towards the DAAD grant that covered my living expenses during my master's degree.

I got a remote part-time job with an American tech startup as a data scientist in 2020 while I was prepping for my master's thesis, and after I finished my thesis defense in late 2021 I started working there full time. I got married to my soon-to-be-ex-wife around the same time I finished my thesis, and since she's Norwegian that got me a work visa without needing to be sponsored by an employer, which mine at the time wouldn't have been able to do as a US company. At the time I didn't have any strong reason to return to the US, and there are definitely benefits to living here compared to the US (I got my top surgery last year fully paid for by public health insurance, for instance). While I have been considering moving back home to be closer to my family, the current political situation in the US obviously makes me want to avoid needing to do so right now, so ideally I'll stay here in Germany for at least a few more years until I can see where things end up going in the US.

How did you choose your username?
I chose a new username for tildes, wanted something that started with a Z that wasn’t affiliated with anything else. And this wasn’t, at least at the time. I named one of my Terraria characters Zorind and it felt like a good mage name.

    What are your interests?
I spend a lot of time playing video games, wanting to get more into woodworking (currently trying to pick up kumiko but still need to buy some supplies). Also I love board games & TTRPGs but need to figure out how to get an in-person group again. One of the things I miss most from college.

Also I devour books, but have a hard time stopping once I start a book, so I primarily only read on vacation. I’m a big fan of Discworld (only read a few though), and I loved Redwall growing up. Now that Stormlight Archive 5 has released, I’ll probably read those next vacation I go on. I’m currently reading a web serial as it releases (because it forces me to pace myself- hah) called The Wandering Inn. It is extremely long.

And I can’t really blame her, I was born in one of the Columbus suburbs so I was kind of hoping she’d go for her PhD here so we could move closer to my family.

How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?

Roughly six years. I don't remember exactly how I found out about the site nor who invited me, but I remember seeing it mentioned on a /r/redditalternatives thread. Before then, I tried Hubski and Snapzu and found both of those communities to be dead.

How did you choose your username?

Vaguely similar to the username I use on Reddit, which I want to disassociate from because I was one of those idiots who used my first initials and last name as my username back in the earlier days of the internet, and that's not a good idea when you fear pissing someone off online and getting doxxed.

I originally wanted to go with Bullmeister because that's a nickname some people gave me at school years ago and it rolls off the tongue, but it makes me sound like a fratboy or like one of those horny high school pupils you'd see in a teen romcom like American Pie. It's also apparently the name of a German boyband that existed back in the 90's? Bullmaestro was a comprimise.

    What are your interests?

PC gaming, primarily. At the moment I'm mainly playing League of Legends and World of Warcraft. My girlfriend suggested I get into Slay The Spire so I've been playing that on/off recently too.

More recently as of the last year, I have been getting a lot into karaoke and have been getting fortnightly singing lessons online for the past few months from a tutor who lives in my city. Some of my friends are KJs and I'm one of the regulars in their Whatsapp group chat who frequently go to pub karaoke nights they host. This does mean I drink more than I used to pre-COVID, but that's something I'm starting to dial back because I think I'm going through a period of depression and anxiety. I'm probably being a hypochondriac worrying about my behaviour or health.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

I have an accounting background, being fully AAT qualified and three exams into my ACCA. Was previously working as a Commercial Reporting Analyst but was made redundant a few weeks ago. Finding a new job has been a really big struggle because the job market ain't what it was a few years ago. It feels like recruitment agencies have been wasting my time and are just siphoning my personal details. Most jobs I apply directly to for similar/lower work I've done before, I get constantly rejected for. Even lower paid bookkeeping and purchase ledger jobs I get rejected from and I'm like "what the fuck."

The only interest I've had from recruiters is them trying to pigeonhole me into temp purchase ledger work, at companies based in a shithole industrial estate part of town that's a bitch to commute to, often so congested that it once took me over an hour just to leave the estate.

Not easy when I'm in the process of buying a flat (completion date still TBD) and need to get something permanent soon.

Since being laid off, I've had a grand total of two interviews. One turned me down after the first stage because they took the explanation of my last job (where I ran through my CV they interpreted my explanation of handling a subledger of veterinary locums with incredibly low payment terms, constant chases, pressure to mitigate late fees and doing multiple payment runs a week as me hating high volume workplaces when I said nothing of the sort.) The other... I'm waiting to hear back from.

I have thought about going into something else, but I don't particularly want to waste thousands of pounds and years of study by leaving accountancy behind. But when I see adverts recruiting for newly trained bus drivers and couriers and see they have the potential to earn more, I feel like a fucking clown for continuing to go down my path.

Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?

    I'm open to DMs.

I have been on Tildes for nearly two years now. I first heard about it during the Reddit API Blackout in 2023. I was already kinda getting tired of the atmosphere on Reddit and had been looking for a new forum for some time.

How did you choose your username?
C-cab is a pseudo-nickname based off my initials.

What are your interests? (This could be music, tech, art, video games, board games, books, anything!)
Pretty broad range of interests, but I would say my primary ones at the moment are music, film, science (particularly neuroscience, biology ,and entomology), video games, cycling, and education.

We have so many instances of ant social groups that have interspecies integration, whether through exploitation or mutualism, that we have dubbed it myrmecophily. There can be whole tiny microecosystems that revolve around single ant nests, and it's quite striking how interdependent these relationships can be.

What type of history did you want to pursue?

Military history with food history. Since I was young, I had a interest in military history, I was the weird kid that would watch the History Channel (I know) after school and watch their documentaries on WWII and the other subjects that they rarely covered. And I felled in love with food history in college, and since both of them seemed to be intertwine with each other. But my true love is the history of beer because that is one of the common traits for the different civilizations around the world, from the Mesopotamian ale (which the Smithsonian had made before, to see what it tasted like) to the chicha that the Incans brewed, along with the role that women had in brewing it, because it was part of their homemaking job or for religious purposes. And a lot of the polytheistic have goddess that have beer brewing and another responsibility that women had, like Nephthys, who was the Egyptian goddess of beer making and brewing and childbirth (along with other things). This changed in the Renaissance period in Europe because of the Brewing guilds that popped up that barred women from this profession. Oh, and there is a theory out there that states that beer is the reason why humans stopped being hunters and gatherers, instead of bread, mostly because chemicals that is found that is associated with ale, in some pots in prehistoric sites.

Have you been to N.... uhh... Niagara Falls? I've never been but I've heard it's beautiful!

Sadly, I have not been to Niagara Falls, which I want to, because that is another wine growing region in New York, and I want to go to the wineries over there, granted I live in one of the regions. The reason for the NYC comment is that whenever I say I am from New York, they just assumed I have been, or that I am from there.

There are 7 main wine growing regions in New York, Finger Lakes, Hudson River Region, Upper Hudson, Champlain Valley, Long Island, Lake Erie and Niagara Escarpment (which is the newest region that is recognized and that being in 2005), that ranges in prices here, but a lot of the wine is good. We also have a number of micro and craft breweries here too, that range from being really good to being really bad.

It is pretty much of the year from where I am from. And the weather can change drastically and different parts of a city can have vastly different weather. Once my parents were out getting groceries and outside it was whiteout conditions, and while in town, it was bright and sunny (as much it can get in winter). The food is pretty good too, because we are about diverse as New York City, the food can be pretty good. If you are in Rochester, make sure you get a garbage plate, especially if you need something after a night of drinking.

June 2023 apparently. I was noticing a decline in Reddit so I started looking for alternative forum sites and eventually found a reddit thread advertising this place.

How did you choose your username?

    I like the color gray.

    What are your interests?

Science and engineering, particularly topics relevant to electricity and decarbonization.

I also like music, especially instrumental or foreign language songs where I dont understand the lyrics.

And Im fairly into analyzing media narratives and coming up with my own headcanon to explain apparent plot holes.

Give us a fun fact (or a link!)! If there is anything to know about tilderinos, it's that we value knowledge sharing!

In Pokemon Red and Blue, there are 4 of the 8 gym badges that affect the loyalty of outsider pokemon, namely the Cascade, Rainbow, Marsh, and Earth badges. In the anime, Ash does not legitimately earn any of these badges.

The Cascade badge he gets for battling Misty, but at a time where her older sisters are the official gym leaders instead of her.

The Rainbow badge is given to him as a reward for saving Erikas pokemon from a fire

The Marsh badge is given after a wild Haunter makes Sabrina laugh and she stops being all evil

The Earth badge is won by battling Team Rocket, not Giovanni

Because of this, and due to the fact that Charmander had an original trainer before Ash, it does make some sense mechanically as to why Charizard doesnt obey Ash even after he has collected all the badges and competed at the League championships.

Theres a number of different proposed designs for developing fusion reactors, and every one of them is rad as hell. Theres giant magnets and lasers and lightning arcs and fireballs of plasma, its all really cool sounding.

My favorite proposal is from a company called General Fusion. Not because it sounds like it will work, but just because its the wackiest shit Ive ever heard. Their original plan was to take a huge vat of melted lithium, then spin it around in a giant centrifuge to form a swirling vortex of molten metal, then they fire a shot of burning plasma into the eye of the storm, and then surrounding it are a hundred pneumatic pistons that hammer the whole thing from all sides to compress it all with a hypersonic shockwave, and that is supposed to create fusion conditions that will result in a net output of energy.

I came with the Reddit wave due to API changes. I don't remember exactly how I came about Tildes but eventually found the tildes subreddit and got an invite.

How did you choose your username?
It's an amalgamation of my real name and a common internet name I have used. Also really into underscores these days.

    What are your interests?
Music, music production, sound design, spooky movies, documentaries, filmmaking, public transit, leftist politics, sleeping, tattoos, history, non-fiction, fooooood, pub trivia, crossword puzzles (am bad), organizing things, animals 🥺

    A/S/L (age/(gender|pronouns|identifier)/location)
34, male, Denver right now but moving back to Portland in a couple months (USA). Grew up in Texas -- cannot recommend.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.
I work as a graphic and web designer right now but this has been an evolution with the same company from inventory and operations, somehow. Was doing audio/video production for 11ish years before that. Work is whack. I am a musician and sound artist, which isn't whack (to me)! I also like editing video and creating video art. I posted on here months ago looking for collaborators, actually!

Ummm, I make weird electronic music that you can listen to here and in a month I'll post this really bizarre short film I helped co-edited and did sound design and music for! I don't know if that was the intent of that question. Here's one - there is a street in Denver (current location) that is the longest in the United States. I somehow have never been able to use this information in pub trivia, unfortunately.

What_about_underscores_do_you_love? What are your favorite documentaries? And what about public transit interests you?

It's an amalgamation of my real name and a common internet name I have used. Also really into underscores these days.

      What_about_underscores_do_you_love?

Music, music production, sound design, spooky movies, documentaries, filmmaking, public transit, leftist politics, sleeping, tattoos, history, non-fiction, fooooood, pub trivia, crossword puzzles (am bad), organizing things, animals 🥺

underscores — i regularly try and come up with ways to reorganize my digital files as both my job and my hobbies are all digital. right now i’m using something like: category_subcategory_file-name_version

also because the internet has been around for so long, most straightforward versions of usernames are taken. if you add underscores, you can get the name you want. and it visually looks nice to me!

documentaries — oh, my favorite… that’s hard but I think I like Adam Curtis’ docs the most in general. his style of visual storytelling and incredibly dedicated effort into sourcing footage is inspiring. the subjects and research are fascinating as well.

pub transit — i grew up in and around houston (USA) where there is zero pub transit outside the inner city and extremely poor service inside the city. i have always had a car but it has felt like a burden for the past 10 years. i think (american) society would benefit from an extreme drop in car usage and an investment into public transit infrastructure. i also spend a lot of time on public transit and reading about and watching videos on the subject.

Underscores I’m neutral towards, but I do appreciate good organization!

Documentaries I love, from nature docs to historic pieces. I just really like to learn about things and I find visual media to be the most interesting. I’m not familiar with Adam Curtis’ work, so I’ll check some out! Recently I watched Society of the Snow and loved it! Made me realize that my favorite style of documentary probably isn’t even a documentary. It’s more of a drama piece that just tried to be very accurate. Still allowed to take some liberties, but mostly true to life. Like the Chernobyl mini series from a few years back.

And public transit I agree 100%. I too grew up in a sprawling American city with garbage public transit, and thinking about how it doesn’t actually have to be that way both makes me feel hopeful but also sad. The problem with a lot of it is that the downsides are super easy to quantify (how much $$$ will it cost) while a lot of the benefits are much more complicated to measure (quality of living, decreased climactic impact, people’s mental health from not sitting in traffic all day). And what’s crazy is that a lot of these cities actually used to have better public transit and layouts back in the early 1900s with things like electric trolleys and shared-use streets. But then the rise of the automobile industry in the 1900s really killed that. And now everything is designed for cars, and it takes a monumental effort to undo/fix things.

How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?
I’m another Reddit API refugee, once Apollo shut down I started searching for other communities that provided some semblance of value. I found Tildes searching through a list of Reddit alternatives, and the very first thread I read led me to an album that has carried me through a really challenging time in life. Needless to say, I’ve been a daily reader ever since.

How did you choose your username?
It’s a new one for Tildes, I like interesting two-word combinations, and it’s the best one I could think up on the fly.

    What are your interests?
I love music, collecting vinyl records, and listening to audiobooks. I’ve been a lifelong gamer, despite limited time to play these days, esp. Metroidvanias, survival horror, open world RPGs. I love animals, nature, space, science, and learning as much about the world I live in as possible. I love human physiology, neurophysiology, biomechanics, pain science, neuroplasticity, and its various clinical applications.

I’m a physical therapist specializing in orthopedic, neurologic, and vestibular rehabilitation. I previously had a 14 year career in pharmaceutical management and was doing pretty well, but as a primary caregiver for my spouse who lives with several neurological and autoimmune disorders, I actually found that my greatest strengths and greatest intrinsic value came from helping her recover and live her best life despite her physical challenges, so I quit my job, went back to school, and got my DPT. Now I use those strengths everyday to help others live their best life. I’m thinking about starting some kind of podcast or vlog with an emphasis on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the caregiving experience and living with chronic health issues, patient-caregiver relationships (esp. in marriages/partnerships), self-care, finding purpose, motivation, etc.

I may be standing on a professional soapbox here, but I feel too many people with musculoskeletal pain define and limit themselves based on the words their doctors use and their imaging findings. From using terms like “bone on bone”, “this is the worst knee I’ve ever seen”, “your posture is killing you”, etc, I feel that the words doctors use can have a significant nocebic effect on patients both physically and mentally, especially when proper education is lacking (which it usually is, given the 5 minutes you get actually get to see your doctor these days, at least in the US).

For example, 40-year-old individuals who are completely asymptomatic show lumbar disc degeneration, disc bulging, and intervertebral disc height loss on MRI at a rate of 68%-50%-33%, respectively. Those percentages jump to 88%-69%-68% at age 60, and 96%-84%-43% at age 80. Again, these findings are seen in individuals without pain. Summed up, ‘degenerative factors’ seen on imaging are common in asymptomatic individuals, and this only increases with age, which means these “degenerative’ features are likely part of normal aging and not necessarily associated with pain. Conversely, an individual could be experiencing a high degree of pain and have imaging that is relatively free of any notable degenerative or injurious features.

Pain neuroscience education and the individual patient experience is an incredible topic that I have a deep interest in. Despite learning more and more about it each day, we still face challenges with the clinical how-to application. I find my outcomes are better and the patient experience is more positive when I place a large emphasis not just on specific exercise, but on education, not catastrophizing pain, limiting kinesiophobia, and addressing secondary factors that affect pain (like sleep, stress, nutrition, weight, aerobic exercise, etc). jumps off soapbox

I joined in June of 2023. Like many, I was a Reddit user who was unhappy with the direction the company was taking. So I supported the blackout and looked for alternatives, got my invite and haven't really looked back.

How did you choose your username?

I just used my Reddit username, which I chose years ago when I was a brand new locksmith and feeling overconfident in my abilities.

    What are your interests?

I collect interests and information as a sort of meta-hobby. I tend to be an "inch deep, mile wide" hobbyist, so I've tried my hand at/studied lots of stuff: laser cutting, 3d printing, woodworking, linguistics, cryptocurrency, numismatics, comedy, neurology, cryptography, animal facts, fantasy fiction and rpgs... The list keeps going. I'm the kinda guy who wants to know a bit about everything, so I'll read book, TV show and video game summaries just to be able to enjoy the culture around them. I guess the best summary of my interests is, "I want to be able to get every in-joke I encounter, and I spend my time accordingly."

    A note on doxxing

I've gone to minor lengths to avoid doxxing myself since my start on Reddit, but my OPSEC is far from perfect. I'm sure anyone with a bit of time on their hands could figure out who I am and tell everyone.

I'd rather you didn't. It just makes me happier to maintain my pseudo-anonymity.

But I haven't said anything on this site (or online in general) that I thought no one would ever see or that would end my career (though of course I've grown and changed over the years and certainly disagree with my younger self on certain points), and being doxxed wouldn't make me disappear. I'd just be disappointed.

    Thank you for your time.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

I'm a locksmithing instructor by trade, so I teach commercial and government locksmiths how to do their jobs. I also develop curriculum and physical tools for that work. In my spare time I read and watch (way too much) TikTok and YouTube.

Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?

By all means. Though the odds are split as to whether I'll forget to respond or talk your ear off.

Give us a fun fact (or a link!)! If there is anything to know about tilderinos, it's that we value knowledge sharing!

Aluminum used to be more valuable than gold or platinum, due to its rarity and the difficulty in its manufacture. It was anecdotally used to make tableware reserved by the emperor of France for his most honorable guests. The cap of the Washington Monument is aluminum, both for its precious nature at the time and its conducting property (it acts as a sort of lightning rod). But the funny bit is this: the monument was completed in 1885, with the aluminum being an expensive, precious metal. In 1886, a method was discovered to produce it cheaply, and its price plummeted. It's now one of the cheaper metals, and we don't really think about it anymore and make disposable stuff from it.

It just makes me feel... feelings that something unimaginably costly can become ubiquitous and cheap in an instant. And the reverse is true - Bitcoin was originally worth nothing. I once had hundreds of thousands of dollars worth - in today's money. At the time, it was practically worthless and I spent it on a few trinkets I was collecting. And who knows how long it will be before it's worthless again.

Things change. Their costs change. Value isn't necessarily merit. What's hard for me today may someday be so trivial I don't think about it, and what I do now may become impossible.

It makes me want to enjoy the cheapness of cheap things and the costliness of costly things while they exist, because who knows what will come next.

I felt this. One that helps me is remembering that being embarrassed by something I did in the past (or something I wrote about online) just means that I've done some growing as a person, else I wouldn't regret it in the first place. (Not implying that you are embarrassed, just saying that it's something that's helped me when looking back through some of my younger days of being online and saying dumb things). I'm glad most of my childhood was before the days of online social media where your dumb mistakes are visible to the whole world and recorded potentially forever.

I'm a locksmithing instructor by trade, so I teach commercial and government locksmiths how to do their jobs. I also develop curriculum and physical tools for that work.

Which hobby/hobbies have you connected to the most out of all the ones you've tried?

That's a tougher question to answer than I thought it would be. I always have trouble answering questions with superlatives in them, so I suppose I'll qualify my answer and say that, as the hobby that enables the others, reading is the one to which I most deeply connect and to which I have been connected the longest, but comedy (specifically, making others laugh in conversation) is a constant through-line in my life leading back to early childhood, even if it hasn't dominated my time and energy to the same extent.

I'm glad most of my childhood was before the days of online social media where your dumb mistakes are visible to the whole world and recorded potentially forever.

        Same, friend, same.

        That sounds pretty cool!

It is (apparently) my dream job. I thought I'd like it, but had no idea how much. The learning is fun, the product design is highly stimulating, teaching gives me many short-term captive audiences on whom to inflict my anecdotes, and my coworkers are top-notch.

Also, bonus question: if doors cannot stop you, what can?

Windows. My one weakness. (I prefer Linux) (For real, breaking glass is so annoying to do accidentally as a locksmith)

I know that some cheetahs can get some sort of melatonin mutation that makes them darker, but I don't think they'd be all black. That definitely sounds like a leopard/jaguar!

He NEEDED to see you at all times or else he would squawk to try and find you (so he went nuts for facetime calls because he could hear that another person was present but not see them). He loved it when anything rang (doorbell, microwave, phones, random ding sounds on the TV). Quite the figure.

How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?

My oldest post is from February in 2019. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I think there was a Hacker News thread (or maybe a Reddit thread cross posted to HN) where Deimos was handing out invites. I think that was Tildes first 'launch'.

I mostly lurk, but it's fun to contribute every now and then.

How did you choose your username?

sudo is a command in UNIX systems to do something with admin privileges. At the time when I created this account, I was super into Linux and FOSS. I've calmed down a bit since then, but I've been getting back into using Linux for my personal computing that isn't gaming.

For those interested, I'm currently rocking Sway as my WM on Fedora.

    What are your interests?

Video Games: Video games have always been a big part of my life. Maybe a little too much at times. In undergrad, I dropped out of school because I was being a little too much of a degenerate. Skipping class to play League of Legends all day and things like that.

Nowadays, I've got a much better realtionship with them. My most played game on Steam right now is Elden Ring. Currently been playing that, Baldur's Gate 3 with my wife and I just picked up Stellaris a couple of days ago which has been horrible for my free time :)

Reading: Have always loved to read, but it comes and goes. Right now I'm in a bit of a reading lull, I don't think I've picked up a fiction book in over a month now. I'll go through periods where I'm voraciously reading a new sci-fi or fantasy series that I have found.

When I was reading a month or two ago, I was on book 4 (I think?) of the Expanse.

Drawing: This is a new one over the past two months. This year, I wanted to try and have a Yearly Theme around being more creative. Most of my free time is centered around consuming media. Whether it's video games, YouTube, anime, etc. I don't think all this consumption is good for my soul. It makes me feel pacified and deeply unfulfilled.

So, I wanted to change that! I've tried a couple things this year already that haven't really stuck. I've tried to write some fiction and to do a little bit of game development. In early February, I decied to try to learn to draw for maybe the 4th time now. I was inspired by a progress video from PewDiePie with his journey on drawing.

Amazingly, this one stuck. I think it's because I finally figured out how to let go of my anxiety around needing to be 'perfect' and to make sure that I'm learning efficiently, or the 'right' way. In the past when I've tried to learn how to draw, I would burn myself out on learning the fundamentals. Fundamentals are good, but if I'm trying to get into a new hobby for fun I should really focus on the fun part. What's the point of learning a new hobby if I don't enjoy it?

This worked super well and before I know it I managed to hit my goal of drawing everyday for a month for at least 10 minutes a day. Often, I would spend much more than 10 minutes working on a drawing. It's been super rewarding so far! Although I've been a little distracted the last two weeks and haven't been drawing much. I think I do a session once I'm done writing this up :)

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

For work, I'm a software developer. I've been in the industry for about 7 years now. I still feel like I don't know much. There's always new stuff to learn and keep up with.

I love computers and I love programming, but corporate programming can kinda be a drag. It seems to depend on the day for me. There are periods where I really enjoy digging into an old code base to try and graft on a new feature or to try and understand why something is the way it is. Other days, I'm dragging my feet to get anything done.

Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?

    Sure thing :)

Give us a fun fact (or a link!)! If there is anything to know about tilderinos, it's that we value knowledge sharing!

Not really knowledge, but there was this cool game shared on HN the other day called 'It is as if you were on your phone'. It's something that stuck with me because I think that one of the hardest problems that a modern human has to deal with in our day and age is to defend our attention. At least, I think that is one of my biggest struggles. So many companies benefit monetarily from ripping my attention away from me and making my life worse. I'm constantly trying to get better with this realtionship with my tech.

Hello party people, I am granfdad! General consensus is to follow the suggested topics, so I will too:

How long have you been on Tildes? How did you find out about us?

Made my account on June 10, 2023 (right around the last introductions thread! I don't think I participated though) as part of that big Reddit API exodus. Found the site through a "Reddit Alternatives" thread on... Reddit. Never looked back, really.

How did you choose your username?

Had a running gag with a friend about misspelling words, and I thought granfdad (from "grandad") was funny. Wanted to replace my childhood gamertag so I stuck with it. I do not have grandchildren or children.

    What are your interests?

I'm interested is basically all things design. Graphic, UX, industrial, game, etc. If it's been designed, I'm always down to hear about it. More on this later!

My music taste can (unfortunately) be effectively be summed up as "any music that has been generally mocked by the public". Dubstep (riddim, brostep, not so much 'true dubstep'), hyperpop, vaporwave. I don't know a single person IRL who shares my music taste, but I will keep searching! I actually have a post about Dubstep drafted, so you may see me pop up again soon if you frequent 'new'.

I enjoy tabletop and video games, particularly Skyrim. If you've seen someone discuss Skyrim on the site before, I'm probably somewhere in that thread.

I've got a vague and uninformed interest in privacy, FOSS, and tech in general. I'm not a programmer or engineer by any means, so a lot of it goes over my head. I have a less vague and slightly more informed interest in digital minimalism, Tildes is one of my last remaining social media platforms.

    A/S/L (age/(gender|pronouns|identifier)/location)

19 years old (though this will be outdated within the week), male (He/Him), and I'm Australian, Melburnian to be specific.

What do you do? This could be in your spare time, for work, your passions.

I'm currently studying a bachelor of graphic design, which I'm loving. I also produce some Riddim of my own.

Do you want other users to PM/DM you from this thread?

Sure! I check the site at least once a day, so my responses should (hopefully) be timely. Also, send me music recommendations!

Give us a fun fact (or a link!)!

Since I asked for music recommendations, I'll drop the song that's been stuck in my head for months: Double Arcade by Infekt

Among other things, I host my own blog which started out as a
'I figured this out after google was zero help, so now at least theres something on the web',
and ended up evolving into a genuine writing platform.

Its currently hosted on a Hetzner box, as due to the move to Germany,
my self hosting setup is a bit precarious.
