Though both can get a bit fiddly if you're moving docx or xlsx back and forth, everything works as expected when you use odt and ods.
And I've never gotten used to the ribbon interface and always find myself searching for things, not finding it and then looking on the internet for it, I find things much easier in LibreOffice products, though your mileage may vary.

The obvious market share matters a lot, just as lost past opportunities as well as Microsoft's market practices. As of now, it is simply a catch-22 situation.
Also, there is no Unix-specific game programming, it's either Windows-only using Direct3D or optionally cross-platform via OpenGL and now Vulkan.
In my opinion, however, after things stabilized around 2008~2010, developers could have started to migrate to OpenGL and write more cross-platform games. They didn't do it because Windows offered better software to work with, like debuggers.
Due to that and for the historical reasons I referred to above, there are also much more D3D game developers than for OpenGL.
P.S.: The complexity of GPU drivers is not much of an issue as the lack of added value of Linux platforms. GPU manufacturers also didn't want to risk relying on open source because of both patents and trade secrets.

It's difficult to get set up in many cases because you need to pass through your graphics card to the virtual machine and 3d support isn't super great, performance is terrible.

However, if you don't require specific Windows programs that cannot be run in a VM, then there are options out there, one just has to look for them.
I'm assuming they meant they have no other option for their specific usage. I don't think they were saying there is nothing out there other than windows, but clearly that is not the case.

On my laptop, where I'd love to have it, there's some immense support issues and there weren't any known solutions to them...at least as of a year ago when I last tried. There were workarounds that would make it boot without getting stuck maybe 30% of the time, but that wasn't quite reliable enough to take to class.

I went about two years without dual booting but then Overwatch came out and there was nothing like it available for Linux I buckled and bought a license. Since there a bunch of windows only games have come out that has kept me on Windows. But as a developer I just find the same level of enjoyment via any editor available on the OS. Even Neovim for windows isn't half the experience than neovim through the terminal in linux.

I hate Windows, but I can't help but want to play video games. I'm thinking about putting the time and effort into getting a working GPU passthrough with a virtual machine, but right now I don't have the time because of school.

That and I feel it is useful to support those development studios that have releases on Linux, so that other studios see it is viable as a platform. And not really caring for Triple-A games, probably helps.

Looking at my list of games on Steam on Linux right now, Borderlands 2 is right at the top of games I wouldn't expect to be on Linux. The Metro 2033 games are also on Linux, although you might argue that they aren't that those are more indie than AAA. The Witcher 2 is a weird one. Neither of the other Witcher games are on Linux. These are just games that I own.
Of course, just about every indie game is also on Linux.

I mean I've broken my actual linux install a couple times too but I swear I managed to break the WSL like twice a week.

Also kinda surprised to see so many introverts. Like yeah, forums are the types of places for introverts to be, but considering you have to ask for an invite I would think there'd be at least a bit more representation of extroverts.

If it's just for fun, as many of the questions suggest, ignore me. But if it's meant to get a good idea of who is here (and who isn't) so that we can discuss what voices might be missing in the very early stages of the development of tildes, waiting for the next survey to include things like race, education, and disability... it's disappointing.

Yes, race, education, disability, current & childhood socioeconomic status, experience with online abuse... These are among the things I am interested in. This could use reflection and reaching out to experts in such matters. I posted that thread less than 4 hours ago. Not sure why we need to jump the gun on polling. Then again, I don't think it obviates a need for a coherent strategy at the top.

I think it's totally fair if this is for your own personal interest (I'm still not tired of reporting my Hogwarts houses), but I just want to suggest the perspective that for many people, things like our race, ethnicity and childhood socioeconomic status, etc. are very much part of our identities. Like I am who I am because of the culture my parents raised me in, and how that intermingled with the dominant culture, and how how it manifests in me, etc.

It's for the same reason I am dismayed about the U.S. Census deciding not to include direct questions about sexual orientation and gender identity and thus do not support that. Admittedly, I would have to answer those questions but thankfully here I don't have to worry about a fine.

Its goals were the same as Linux and GNU; make a free alternative to Unix. BSD is often considered to be the most secure operating system. It's also the least compatible because very few people use BSD for anything other than servers. There are some user friendly versions of BSD out there now (The one that comes to mind is Ghost BSD) but I remember having performance issues when I tried it a few years ago. Otherwise, isntall bash and it's more or less Linux.
GNU/Linux and BSD are considered Unix-like operating systems, whereas MacOS is Unix.

Its an alternate operating system, most similar to Linux. Its a completely (licensing) free operating system, which makes it incredibly appealing for embedded and hardware developers. The Playstation 4 runs on a modified FreeBSD kernel, as well as many small devices such as modems, routers, cable boxes, etc.
Linux has a different license, which requires that derived operating systems must also be released as open source, whereas BSD-licenses do not have these restrictions. Desktop BSD is not as commonly used, although very functional, but server-side BSD is considered one of the most secure operating systems available (by default).
macOS (and all derivatives) run on the Darwin kernel, which is derived from the BSD kernel, so in a way BSD is the second most popular desktop operating system.

BSD stands for Berkley Standard Distribution, it was a form of an OS called Unix that was popular in the early days of computing. Unix was what Linux was based on, so the two are quite similar, but have some philosophical and a few major design differences. I prefer the BSDs overall, although I have great respect for what Linux has accomplished and use it everyday.

Self-identification with stuff like this rarely seems to reflect the content on top.

Yeah, I have to wonder if a lot of the people self-identifying as leftist mean leftist as in anarcho-communism, or leftist as in Bernie-supporters. The issue I think comes from different groups having separate definitions of leftism. I'm an anarcho-communist myself, and on subs like r/COMPLETEANARCHY, the consensus is that anyone who isn't class-conscious is centrist, if not right-leaning. however, a lot of Democrats I know in my own life consider themselves to be very far-left. There's no good way to solve any of this - even if each individual ideology was listed out, there's no good way to get everything or account for everyone's personal belief. This whole comment was pretty pointless, but it just makes me wonder how accurate the results are.

That test does skew to the libertarian left. As in, a lot of people who just hold typical liberal opinions end up far into a quadrant for anarcho-communists and the like. As much as I would like to say it's just because answering reasonably means people agree with me more...it's more that it's a poorly designed test with a lot of leading questions. I've seen plenty of people who are more or less Gary Johnson-types end up on the libertarian left / center, which is pretty clearly not accurate.
Still, I like the compass itself as a way to represent things.

That was the thing I found weird about it as well. I had thought I would be further to the right on the scale then I was, but it made me a centrist. I thought I would be decently far into the bottom right as I see myself as more of a classical libertarian, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

I had to ask someone else about this one, too. It was explained to me that sexual orientation is basically "who do you want to have sex with?" and romantic orientation is "who do you want to have a deep emotionally intimate relationship with?" For a lot of people, these might be the same answer, but for others they can be different I guess.
Example: a man who likes to have sex with women and romance women is hetero in both sexual and romantic orientation. A man who likes to have sex with women but romance men is heterosexual but homoromantic.
I felt some immense pain at having to click "Windows."
Get linux then ;p
Yea but I like to play games. When I used Linux at school and work I preferred it but I just don't feel it's viable as a home use platform.
Yeah, I have to dual boot too because Microsoft office and visual studio is too good to pass up
I've never before seen Microsoft office and too good in the same sentence ;)
Excel is, imo, the best spreadsheet software on the market and the rest of the suite is all pretty useful. My biggest problem with office personally is that Microsoft always finds ways to make using open file formats a pain.
Would you say it... Excels?
Im sorry.
Do you have any experience with the LibreOffice suite? How does it compare in your view to MS Office?
From my experience most of it is acceptable and I personally prefer LibreOffice Writer to Word and Calc to Excel.
Though both can get a bit fiddly if you're moving docx or xlsx back and forth, everything works as expected when you use odt and ods.

I didn't know that... that's a really cool piece of information. It always impresses me how complicated the construction of a video game is...
The obvious market share matters a lot, just as lost past opportunities as well as Microsoft's market practices. As of now, it is simply a catch-22 situation.

How well does gaming on a virtualbox work?
It's difficult to get set up in many cases because you need to pass through your graphics card to the virtual machine and 3d support isn't super great, performance is terrible.
Honestly, I don't know. I have yet to try myself.
I'm with you. I don't use Windows because I like it, I use it because there's no option. I've been having so many problems with it lately that I don't think it's worth even 20 bucks. If only I could use something else...
I would beg to differ that there is no other option to Windows, but maybe there isn't for your specific use case and that's fine.
However, if you don't require specific Windows programs that cannot be run in a VM, then there are options out there, one just has to look for them.
I'm assuming they meant they have no other option for their specific usage. I don't think they were saying there is nothing out there other than windows, but clearly that is not the case.
That would make more sense than the way I parsed it.
At most points in time (not recently since windows tried to destroy it during the last big update) I dual boot, but I'm not going to be able to fully switch, I love games too much. Common story, I know, but still true.
I know how you feel. It's my 'main' operating system. My laptop, which I use for school work, uses Manjaro which I love.
I hate Windows, but I can't help but want to play video games. I'm thinking about putting the time and effort into getting a working GPU passthrough with a virtual machine, but right now I don't have the time because of school.
I suppose, with age, I've found I like very few games, and those games that I do like are playable on non-Windows platforms. So, I'd imagine that when we have less free time we become more selective in our entertainment.
That and I feel it is useful to support those development studios that have releases on Linux, so that other studios see it is viable as a platform. And not really caring for Triple-A games, probably helps.
I'm actually surprised regularly which games are on Linux, even AAA games.
I have found that the new Windows Subsystem for Linux helps ease some of that pain. Most days I swear it's the only way I make it though the day at work.
The windows subsystem for linux actually resulted in my finally getting around to installing linux on my desktop. I enjoyed using it so much I realized that just having the subsystem wasn't enough for me... plus I kept managing to find ways the break it 🙄
I mean I've broken my actual linux install a couple times too but I swear I managed to break the WSL like twice a week.
Me too, me too.
Wow, I know it's a small sample size but over 25% female on an Internet forum is really shocking to me. Glad to see we're an inclusive bunch!
We're also almost entirely left (myself included) which scares me a bit.
Seeing Linux representation this massive is nice, I've never seen it over 10% anywhere other than places dedicated to Linux lol
Also kinda surprised to see so many introverts. Like yeah, forums are the types of places for introverts to be, but considering you have to ask for an invite I would think there'd be at least a bit more representation of extroverts.
Yeah, such a massive concentration of a political ideology might be dangerous, especially in a forum as small as this one. I hope that in the future we get to see more diversity of ideologies. I think it is interesting nonetheless.
There are a ton of ideologies that fall into the “left of center” bucket, though!
True that! But it'd be interesting and would enrich us as a community (in my opinion though!) if we had more people from the right.
Depending on how many users are from the US, it might be skewing the results. What is considered left in the US may be considered centrist in the EU and elsewhere.
Indeed. That is the common narrative.
I have no idea how to read this graph
If I remember correctly, that's lower than the percentage of women on Reddit.
Various recent Reddit surveys put it at 30-40% female.
Here's one from SurveyMonkey of their app.
Yeah, that's in the ballpark of what I'm remembering.
The smaller the subreddit the more the female/male ratio tends to decrease though. If we assume that ~ is drawing from a similar population to that of an average obscure subreddit, we're actually doing acceptably.
It has dropped in the few hours since you posted this. It's now at only 20%. :(
Even further now. Only 14%.
I will probably drop further to be honest.
The prevalence of INTPs is really interesting!
It's weird. I'm pretty sure on Reddit the INTP subreddit is the most subscribed MTBI subreddit as well. I guess it makes sense if you want stimulating discussion with others.
Yeah, I was just thinking it could just be self-selection bias. It would make sense that we would see a higher rate of INTPs responding to a survey purely because INTPs would be more interested in contributing to and viewing the results than other MBTI types.
Explains Ravenlcaw.
How so? I don't really understand the MTBI but took it for the quiz.
Im kind of not surprised by the results, but it points to a problem that we could face. Our current demographic (based on what seems like 10% of site population) is very homogeneous. Gonna need to find out how to increase our variety or else we'll become an echo chamber much like reddit's default subs.
Haha, I just took it and the results are pretty funny. We seem to be polar opposites.
This is true. Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?
I'm pretty sure a circle has no beginning.
Well reasoned.
I did not expect so many ravenclaws.
Alright that was fun!
Edit: No Macs so far, I like you all.
Sadly, we have been tainted
I think this is the only place I know with more Linux than Mac users (excluding Linux forums, of course).
I use linux and mac equally but the survey only gave a choice :b
How do you see the results?
Thanks
Is it too late to add a race question while it's still new? Maybe socioeconomic status? Do you consider yourself disabled? Good to know if we mightneed other perspective.
Yeah, not to pile on, but I'm a little disappointed in the questions; it looks like this was prompted at least in part by @mistouflon's demographics topic, yet it doesn't include some pretty basic categories from the beginning.
In regards to disabilities, it's just that it would actually be useful for the development of tildes.
No worries!
I'm still interested in having the conversation in my earlier post. Maybe @Deimos can chime in there? I'm especially thinking about where people are coming from (mostly Reddit and HN, I think?) and the effect of growing by invite.
FWIW, wasn't being sarcastic about enjoying those "for fun" questions. Been really embracing lately that, yes, I probably am a Hufflepuff and should be proud.
And I appreciate your response, clarifications and understanding on the feedback. Looking forward to seeing results as the community grows!
But disabled people can work. You can consider yourself disabled while being in any career!
Disabled and employed aren't necessarily mutually exclusive
Plenty of disabled people have jobs, though; assuming they all answer with their occupation, we won't see them.
As it stands I'm not interested in participating in a survey that doesn't include these factors. Here's hoping another one comes along that's a bit more inclusive.
I appreciate the effort you put in. I wouldn't choose to take the survey because it is not inclusive enough to be representative of what I'm interested in about the community and I would not like to support that by adding my data to it.
It's for the same reason I am dismayed about the U.S. Census deciding not to include direct questions about sexual orientation and gender identity and thus do not support that. Admittedly, I would have to answer those questions but thankfully here I don't have to worry about a fine.
It appears that anyone could make a new one! I know it was just an oversight. It would be nice if OP would have deleted it when we were at like 13 responders to try again, but it's ok. It's not an official one.
This was hilarious. I have to say that I flip flop between intj and intp fairly regularly. :)
Me too. We're a special breed of people who balance emotions and logic. =P
Yeah I used to get INTJ fairly consistently and nowadays I get INTJ and INTP. I usually just stick with INTJ since it's been the most common result.
I swear every time I take this test I end up something different (Introverted is the only constant)
I remember reading that it has no basis in science or anything like that, so I guess it's not too surprising that it's not constant
What's INTP?
It is a business and academic horoscope sign. :)
Nifty. Thanks.
I'm the lone BSD user. RIP
One thing that really surprised me was how balanced the woman and men are. Normally internet sites show significantly more men then women, but that's not the case right now at least...
What's a BSD actually?
BSD stands for Berkeley Software Distribution. Technically, MacOS could be considered BSD as well, since it's based on BSD, but it's so different that most people wouldn't think of it that way.
Most BSDs now aren't considered Unix. Maybe at one time when there was just one BSD it was Unix, but today that's not the case. BSD's derivatives are Unix-like. I think the only current OS with BSD code that is certified Unix is MacOS.
I use BSD on several servers, Linux on others, Windows on my desktop for gaming, Linux on my laptop, and have a Mac Mini for iOS development. I figured I actively use linux the most so I went with that
What flavor BSD?
FreeBSD. I've wanted to get OpenBSD a try but haven't gotten around to it yet, but now that I have an old that it'll properly support Thinkpad I think I'll do so somewhat soon :D and I'd also love to try NetBSD sometime.
Windows on the desktop and Linux on everything else sounds like a pretty common config for a lot of people. I actually dual boot, but I'm not sure when the last time I booted into Linux on my desktop.
I dual booted for a while, but came to terms with the fact it was useless for me and wiped the Linux partitions to reclaim the space
68/32 at the moment, huh
Surprised to see more people identifying as far left than everything from centrist to far right combined
It's always weird. You see around Reddit and these parts lots of ideas rise to the top which are in line with the whole libertarian tech crowd, but they often consider themselves left...going with the whole "socially liberal, economically conservative" thing but using "left" to describe them quickly in things like this since they don't hate gay people or whatever.
I much prefer the scale used it the politics thread. Though it does show that the majority of people are still rather far left. I am, as of the time of this post, the only person who is actually economically conservative who has filled out that survey.
Raises the question of how we prevent echochamber effects if everyone here is left-leaning.
In a few previous (very brief) discussions on this topic, the response I've seen is something like (paraphrasing) "racial/ethnic/gender/etc. diversity is more important than political ideology. also some ideas are just wrong and hateful so don't belong on tildes"
Yeah, that sentiment. How do we prevent it?
Perhaps we can draft something that could go into a tildes reddiquette, phrased in a positive way as a virtue, which would counteract this tendency for tribalism and encourage exploring opposing perspectives - not necessarily because they are good (nobody is going to think those they disagree with have good ideas), but because understanding them from the inside is empowering.
Y'know usually I hate survey formats but this one was excellent. I especially appreciate the clarification with gender identity and considering one's self trans. In usual surveys me clicking "female" winds up erasing my trans status, so that little detail was great, thank you.
Seems pretty expected to me, techie early adopting forum users tend to be introverted and nerdy
Finished the survey, I liked the "for fun" part.
It was a good survey in my opinion, making questions optional was a good idea.
It's interesting that almost 30% identify as queer, and 12% bi. That seems unusually really high.
I think most of the trends we're seeing are a consequence of the filter bubble phenomenon.
It might not have been a good idea to turn on live results right away since it can de facto dox people through the process of elimination.
EDIT: I mean dox is too strong a word, but you can figure out users' gender/country of origin.
EDIT 2: OK this isn't really a concern anymore now that there are >4 replies and every question has multiple distinct answers.
Is it possible to add questions? I'd like to see an educational background question on there
Could you add a question regarding age? I'm 17 and I sort of get the feeling that everyone else on here is old enough to have been on reddit 10 years ago. It would be interesting to see how many users are around my age.
Oh my bad, I went through the live responses cause I was too lazy to do the survey (I'll fill it out now). For some reason I didn't think age would have been one of the two text fields.
Really curious, what is the difference between sexual orientation and romantic orientation?
I had to ask someone else about this one, too. It was explained to me that sexual orientation is basically "who do you want to have sex with?" and romantic orientation is "who do you want to have a deep emotionally intimate relationship with?" For a lot of people, these might be the same answer, but for others they can be different I guess.
Example: a man who likes to have sex with women and romance women is hetero in both sexual and romantic orientation. A man who likes to have sex with women but romance men is heterosexual but homoromantic.
I took it. It's a shame those last two questions involve imaginary topics. /s
The personality test was very interesting. First time, I heard of this. And hello fellow ENFPs. There are just three of us here.
/u/Kat, I was planning to do a survey eventually, but isn't Typeform limited to 100 responses in the free version?
oh, I had no idea they at least allowed this. I also have an old account, so I'm going to test it soon. Thanks!
Can't wait to see these results. Some strange questions, but fun!
