    1. If all ice on Earth melts, how will coastlines change? I made a rough sketch with a website and video

I'm a web developer who got inspired by NASA's imagery (and my abundant climate anxiety) to make an interactive map and video visualizing how sea levels could change if all ice on Earth melts. Most estimates that I've seen for potential sea level rise vary from 60 to 75 meters, some higher. This map shows roughly 65 meters. It's not a scientifically useful tool (there are many good ones!) but I like the result and wanted to share.

I made it using NASA's Blue Marble Next Generation, topography, and bathymetry. Unfortunately the land imagery is from 2004. Would be interesting to compare it to an updated version. The song is "Winter" by Alexander Nakarada.

On the technical side it uses WebGL for the map via PixiJS, and Svelte for the rest of the app. I originally wrote it all in Svelte but the DOM isn't up to the task. If you're curious you can switch to the DOM renderer by pressing ctrl+backtick on the map and clicking "webgl". The source code readme has more info.

I'm happy to answer questions, not about the science though, I just make websites.

I'm 22. Until a few years ago, I was pretty left-leaning and felt the urgency of it in empathy, but things feel different now. It feels like we're at the bad end of a game someone failed at the last checkpoint. The world as we know it has already ended, and as much as I know we'll make it out of this pandemic, it kind of doesn't feel like we'll make it out of the larger situation. Corporations are consolidating power, rising fascism, and a ticking time bomb in climate change just to give it a little more urgency.

So, those of you who've been around the sun a few more times - has it ever felt like this before? Am I just feeling this despair because I'm inexperienced and haven't been through it before, or is this crisis really something new?

EDIT: Thank you to everyone for the responses. It's made me feel better, in a way, to know that others see what I see, but also that we as a species have pulled through similarly terrible times in the past.

Here's hoping we make it right before we totally wipe ourselves out.
