What are your favorite funny, silly or wacky games?

Examples I know are goat simulator and Untitled Goose and Who's Your Daddy

It's a classic now, but the first time I sat down with Katamari Damacy, I grinned like an idiot. The style, the soundtrack, the discovery of the game mechanics were all chef-kiss-fingers good.

The thing about this game that I like the most is how many jokes are either incredibly easy to miss or are simply overlooked because so much weird stuff is happening it just doesn’t register as a joke. If you point at any random point on the screen at any random time you’ll probably be pointing at one of the gags.

In a similar vein, Donut County is not very long, but a hilarious game. It's a small twist on the Katamari Damacy mechanics, but very enjoyable and the dialog is fantastic.

Go in expecting a thin, three-hour diversion rather than a spiritual successor to Katamari.

I played the demo for REROLL on Switch, and the intro sequence had me genuinely questioning if drugs were involved. When I eventually bought the full version, I started questioning if anyone else in the game world is on drugs. And also pondering the horror of being rolled into a ball of junk and shot into space.

First time I played Katamari Damacy was during the pandemic. I got high and just disconnected from the world for an afternoon and it was an absolute blast. Rekindled my love for gaming at a very dark time in the world. We were also dealing with wildfires and poor air quality so things were extra fucked. I picked up We <3 Katamari Reroll recently and I'm excited to play it again. I emulated it as well during the pandemic because I loved the first Reroll so much.

I still personally liked the third one (although reviews are generally mixed). I tend to Lake Lokai the fourth as it was pretty bad.

The telltale series revived it and was actually pretty good but unfinished unfortunately.

This is my perfect list question. Happy to suggest some classics!

    • Wizkid (Amiga, Atari ST, DOS) is an indescribable menagerie of game styles from breakout to point and click adventure game, with a surreal almost Monty Python style of distinctly British humour. In my old review of it I describe it as "The greatest video game ever sold?" https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2011/07/21/wizkid/

    • Boogie Wings (Arcade) this “shmup” contains more ideas than any other single game. At every turn you think you’ve seen it all: you have not. Game designer Kazuyuki Kurata called it a day after this, his only game. A masterpiece. https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2022/12/26/gaming-advent-calendar/

    • Muscle March (WiiWare) is a great "hole in the wall" style bit of marching and posing madness, with more than a little in common with Katamari Damacy (PS2) and Pepsiman (PS1).

    • Bishi Bashi Special (PS1, Arcade) is a raucous multi-player mini game compilation that no doubt inspired Wario Ware (GBA, etc) series, which you could also check out. https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2010/11/01/bishi-bashi-special/

    • Rhythm Tengoku aka Rhythm Heaven (GBA, DS, Wii, 3DS) sort of follows on from Wario Ware.

    • Kero Kero King (PS1) or Ribbit King (GC, PS2) are two games in a series. An amazing concept: frolf (golf but rather than hitting a ball you hit a frog(!) and when it lands it has a life of its own). Brilliantly bonkers. Patience required.

    • Gokujo Parodius aka Fantastic Journey (SNES) is mad, totally unhinged, and a hugely enjoyable shoot 'em up.

    • Suzuki Bakuhatsu (PS1) is a bomb-diffusal puzzle game. But the scenarios are totally unexpected and often very wacky and fun. How about a bomb hidden inside an orange? Yup!

    • ExciteBots - Trick Racing (Wii) arcade racing with a barrage of mini games/tasks around the course. Bonkers. Still playable online using Wiimmfi.

    • MaBoShi (WiiWare, DS download play) is a game of unorthodox controls and weird arcade scoring mechanic. Truly one (or three, depending on your point of view) of a kind. https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2013/06/29/maboshi/

    • Tomba! aka Tombi! (PS1) An irreverent 2.5D platform adventure game with a great sense of humour. https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2010/10/21/tomba/

    • Guru Logi Champ (GBA) is a Japanese game with the most bizarre and hilarious cut scene story. More than that it's a truly classic puzzle game.
      https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2010/10/01/guru-logi-champ/

    • Runabout series (PS1, PS2, DC, 3DS) I prefer Runabout 2 on PS1. They are mission based driving games with all manner of random tasks and nonsense going on in the world. One of my favourite series. https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2021/01/01/top-10-games-played-in-2020/

    • Smashing Drive (GC, Xbox) People see the taxi and assume it's like Crazy Taxi, but it's not. It is more like Out Run - a point to point racer. It's set in a weird world where King Kong appears and you can crash into his nuts. A barrage of sound and noise and great fun to replay to find new shortcuts and try to beat your high scores. Mad music, too. If you like this also check out the Radikal Bikers (PS1, Arcade) which is essentially a prequel in a different scenario. https://blog.gingerbeardman.com/2022/12/26/gaming-advent-calendar/

    • Ooga Booga (DC) is a sort of arena battle game with lots of modes, one of which has you playing a sort of game of polo whilst riding around on the back of a wild boar. Can still be played online.

    • Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan (DS) I prefer the two Japanese games over the Western rebrand Elite Beat Agents. These are rhythm games with wild storylines and great music.

    • LocoRoco (PSP) is a great, fun, weird physics platform puzzle game. Maybe not wacky enough? Great fun, a little annoying to control, but with great music.

    • I would also argue that Mario Galaxy 1&2 (Wii) and Mario Odyssey (Switch) are also wacky and offer a lot of unexpected and funny scenarios.

I'm a big fan of Fall Guys. Wife and I love to put it on and just vibe to wacky dumb (yet competitive!) fun. We've been more on a Fortnite kick lately though, which is also a fairly wacky and funny game. Probably not what you had in mind because it's a shooter, but the randomness of the items and powerups has us cackling with glee at times. There's nothing like fighting someone who is objectively better from a technical standpoint and winning because I thought to just burn their overly-elaborate structure down with a jar of fireflies (read: kid-friendly molotov).

Pony Island - not sure what to write about it, it's a really unique game. Tonally kind of dark but it's very absurd and has a lot of cool ideas. And if you have the right sense of humour it's also very funny.

Octodad is a fun little nugget of goofiness. It's like QWOP with 8 limbs and the nature of its mechanics along with its premise alone makes it silly and fun (you're an octopus trying to pass as a human, now try to go grocery shopping). You can get the hang of moving as the game goes on, and it's not perfect as far as polish goes, but it is smile inducing.
