With Christmas around the corner I'm wondering if anyone has tabletop/card games they enjoy that are quick to play (in my mind less than 30 minutes). I enjoy longer games like Betrayal at House on the Hill immensely, but I'd like to add some games to my collection that are fun and light hearted, easy to learn, and idealy travel easy. I often play games with family over the holidays and want some that aren't as intimidating for my parents and older relatives to pick up and try. I often played with at least 2 other people, but I've been looking for fun 2 player games as well.
Can you please share what the gameplay is like and what you enjoy about playing it? Thanks all!

Hey Tildes, I'm super super out of the loop for gaming PCs. If I wanted to play AAA games like Stalker 2 on higher (!) settings, what kind of specs am I looking at, ballpark prices, makes that are good vs red flag don't buy? Everything seems way too expensive now I guess due to demands for AI and crypto stuff. Does it maybe make more sense to wait half a year or won't get any better?
Thoughts on GeForce rtx 4070? Need some kind of solid state hard drive, and it'll be a windows box it looks like for games. Or has Linux OS for gaming a good contender now esp when paired with steam ?
I should have done my homework well before cybermonday etc, but figure even weeks of work still isn't as good as copying you guy's homework. :) thanks in advance
Edit: Thank you everyone :D I've been leaning on the community for two big things this week (this, and learning to type software) and you guys really came through like eagles at Mt Doom.
Person I am asking for read all your comments, checked out a ton of sites you guys suggested, and
ended up finding a BlackFriday/Cyber Monday deal for a laptop with (reads sheet)GeForce RTX 4080 Ryzen 9 7945HX 32GB 1TB SSD 240Hz 16" laptop
price was $2500 CAD ($ 1785 USD) + taxes. (non affiliated product link here)
many thanks again~

The November 2024 Backlog Burner event is officially over!
Over the course of the month of November, 17 participants moved 136 games out of their backlogs.
There were 9 bingo wins from:
- u/aphoenix
- u/AugustusFerdinand
- u/CannibalisticApple
- u/CrazyProfessor02
- u/Eidolon
- u/Evie
- u/kfwyre
- u/SingedFrostLantern
- u/Wes
Also, a big thank you to ALL who participated in the event, whether that was by playing games or joining in conversations.
It has been an absolute blast doing this with everyone. Thank you all for participating.
Use this topic to post your final bingo cards, give recaps of your games, and share any thoughts you have on the event itself.
See you again for the next Backlog Burner in May 2025!
Statistics
- We averaged 8.0 games per person and 31.7 games per week.
- There were 245 comments posted across 5 different topics.
- Two games were played twice: Hades and Monster Hunter Wilds
- We played games that started with every letter of the alphabet except
Q
.
Highlights
The following highlights were aggregated from participants. Thank you to those of you who wrote in! I'm sharing these as written, though I did make some minor edits to maintain anonymity.
-
u/Wes made a great bingo site that works really well for this event.
-
It's touching that u/Wes took the time to respond to nearly everyone. He really made this feel like a community.
-
A special mention for @Wes, who seems to have read and thoughtfully replied to every single writeup this month, which was very kind (and I really liked their writeup of Praey for the Gods).
-
I love the evolution of the Bingo card over the past several events, and I really liked this form.
-
There were so many great entries that I enjoyed reading this time around, actually, and I really wanted to keep trying games that other people tried.
-
@SingedFrostLantern for their hole-in-one golf
-
The highlight for the whole event to me was @SingedFrostLantern's hole-in-one and the wonderful writeup that went with the game.
-
My favourite writeup had to be @SingedFrostLantern with their Keylocker Hole in One, a fun little exercise that put me onto a new game that (regrettably) went straight back into the backlog.
-
@JCPhoenix for creating full video reviews for many of his entries
-
@Eidolon's Neverwinter Nights for bringing the classics back
-
@kfwyre for Journey to the Savage Planet, and finally getting to be the dog
-
u/kfwyre completely missing the joke
-
@Evie, with basically every write-up she did. Dead Space, Prey, and Outer Wilds were all very good.
-
@CannibalisticApple with Lost in Blue, finally tackling the game cartridge lost somewhere in a closet
-
@J-Chiptunator with four unique console selections

I dont know how many people here play Runescape, but the latest seasonal League has just started a day or two ago.
It is a temporary event during which you start a new profile and all the xp rates and drop rates are boosted considerably, making it really fast to level up and progress.
Ive been having a blast with it. Its a fun way to try out skills you dont typically enjoy and get up to hogh level quickly.
For those playing, what relics and areas have you chosen? Ive unlocked Kandarin as my first area and am currently levelling slayer so I can finally try out the trident of the seas on my ironman account.

Is there a site where I can check if a game has multiple endings or missable stuff without spoilers?
I mean, the simplest answer would be to ask around in forums, but I wanted to know if there's a site where that information is compiled. (wikis typically don't care about spoilers)

The World Chess Championship started today between reigning champion, China's Ding Liren (2728 Elo, 32 y/o) and India's young prodigy Gukesh D. (2783 Elo, 18 y/o). It's taking place in Singapore with games starting at 5PM local time (10AM CET, 4AM EST). Commentated coverage can be found at Chess.com or FIDE as well as numerous smaller channels.
Coming into the match, Ding is far more experienced, but has been displaying terrible form since becoming World Champion. Meanwhile Gukesh has looked far stronger and has the chance to become the youngest World Champion ever, beating out the likes of Magnus Carlsen and Garry Kasparov by several years. Former World Champion Magnus Carlsen is still ranked as the #1 player in the world, but has declined to participate, just like last year.
The match is 14 games from November 23 to December 13, with potential rapid chess tiebreaks if the score is even after 14 games. The players will have a rest day after every 3 game days.

Like the title says, I played Taboo with my friends yesterday. It's decently fun, but every time I play it, the thing that sticks with me is how shocked I am that some players don't know what certain things are or how bad they are at thinking on their feet. On the plus side, it's also a chance for people who you'd unfairly judged to make a good impression.
What are some other games that have consequences like these that you haven't heard people discuss before?

Exploring Happy Volts Asylum in Bully
Happy Volts Asylum is a significant location in the Rockstar Games' hit title, Bully. Known formally as the "Home for the Mentally Unwell," it caters to Bullworth's mentally ill residents. Characters like Otto Tyler, Leon, and Clint (also known as Henry) are mentioned as former inhabitants, whom the protagonist Jimmy Hopkins assists in returning to the asylum.
Significant Characters and Story Involvements
Throughout the game, notable characters such as the English teacher Mr. Galloway and Greaser leader Johnny Vincent find themselves committed to the asylum. Both eventually escape with Jimmy's help, adding a layer of depth and tension to the storyline. Rumors within the game also suggest that the antagonist, Gary Smith, may have been admitted to Happy Volts.
Structure and Accessibility
The asylum is divided into three blocks: A, B, and C. Block B is designated for patients with violent tendencies. At first glance, only Blocks A and B appear accessible due to their marked doors. However, Block C can be accessed by breaking down its door using punches, jumps, or weapons. While Blocks A and B are actively used, Block C is dilapidated, housing eerie features such as a mortuary, operating tables, and an X-ray viewer displaying images of humans with physical defects.
Interactive Elements
Happy Volts is one of the most interactable interiors in the game. Though no patients are visible in the cells, players can hear their screams, adding to the chilling atmosphere. The asylum is patrolled by orderlies in white uniforms, always on the lookout for trespassers. If Jimmy dons the Black Ninja Outfit or Orderly Uniform, he can explore the asylum without being caught for trespassing.
Hidden Areas and Escapades
Exploration of Block C may reveal a door marked "EMPLOYEES ONLY" with a green arrow underneath. This door leads to a fenced-off area, but once entered, Jimmy cannot return and must wait until 2 AM or engage in creative tactics to escape. For instance, using a weapon to hit an orderly through the fence will result in Jimmy being 'busted' and taken to Blue Skies Industrial Park police station.

What games have you been playing, and what's your opinion on them?

My nephew and I like to play games together, and we're always looking for games that we can play together. I was manually looking through my Steam library today and wondering how to go about finding stuff that we may already own that we could play together. Is there a tool for that? Or maybe something that could suggest a game for purchase that we would both enjoy based on our history?
Also feel free to drop any general game library organization tips here. I found this tildes thread from a couple of years ago and I've already seen some cool ideas and tools.

Meta Quest 2 - For someone in a wheelchair

Ok, so my partner has gotten the recommendation from one of his spinal cord injury groups that a Meta Quest 2 would potentially be really good for him as way to feel less "closed in" this winter and that many of the games can be played stationary (he has essentially no control of his legs and uses a power wheelchair).
I don't know anything about any VR games, so I'd love thoughts on the system, what to look for if we buy secondhand, if a different system would be better (money is a barrier, so I don't want to spend it all on a new system and not be able to afford games), and what games would meet his needs?
Thanks y'all
