As the holiday comes up, I’m building a tongue-in-cheek party playlist that speaks to the full color of this beautiful country we Americans call home.
I’m kicking it off with these songs, but what would you add to this playlist?
- Uncle Sam Goddamn by Brother Ali
- This is America by Childish Gambino
- National Anthem by Lana Del Rey
- American Pie by Shea Diamond
- Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
- Know Your Enemy by Rage Against the Machine
- Gentrify by Propoganda
What songs would you add to this playlist? I’ll add songs to my playlist as we go!

I've been trying to work out which Odie Leigh song to post here and I can't decide, so here are five from a session that she's called the Treehouse Tapes. At the moment I'm a real sucker for this kind of thing - one person, minimal production, their own songs.
Odie Leigh - A month or two
Odie Leigh - Habits held
Odie Leigh - Take back
Odie Leigh - Nine lives
Odie Leigh - [Crop circles]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_fWR3klRKo)(For some reason this really reminds me of the Michelle Shocked Texas Campfire Tapes which is a fantastic album but tricky to listen to because of the hateful things she's said.)

The original version of this thread was going to be a list of songs sung by Elvis, along with versions that were released by other people before him. For example:
Burning Love
Arthur Alexander 1971 YouTube
Elvis Presley 1972
YouTubeNice and simple. Not to say "this is great, this is terrible", or "look, he stole it", but just because it's interesting to compare versions.
But then I looked at Hound Dog and wow there are a lot of covers. I got most of these from the Wikipedia article, which is pretty in-depth about this song: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hound_Dog_(song)
So, here's a short list. I'd be interested to know what you think - I love Big Mama Thornton's version, I love Elvis's version, but I'm not that keen on any of the others here.
Hound Dog
Big Mama Thornton 1952 YouTube

Elvis Presley 1956 YouTube
And here's a bunch more before Elvis did his version:
