What are you supposed to be doing right now that you're not doing?

Hey Tildes people, what are you procrastinating on or distracting yourself from right now?

That’s a great idea. I will get around to it later. It’s hard to be motivated when Perry the Platypus keeps showing up to ruin everything.

I'm supposed to be doing work! I only have one day left before my deadline but I'm just on Tildes.

I didn't do anything yesterday either. All I did yesterday was sleep. I thought I could do it at night but then I got a Tildes invite and I've just been obsessing over this place instead.

I know I'm procrastinating because I'm partly worried that I can't actually produce work. That I'm not good enough. I should just get to it.

If you can't find a place to start, it may be helpful to ask a peer for a suggestion of where the best place would be to start.

I do have a place to start, it's just.. Actually just making the first stroke and not worrying it's going to be bad.

But I did get to work eventually! But I had to go to sleep so I'll be doing the same song and dance for me to start again later.

And I wouldn't worry about the thank you cards too much. I know its nice to get them, but unless its for wedding gift its not really expected anymore, and people obviously care about you and understand your grief. And even if you still feel you should a few months from now, anyone would understand why it took a long time to get to them. Just let that guilt go.

Thank you for your very kind reply. Both my husband and I are really struggling with this one ... she was a rescued Newfoundland with enormous health issues from the moment we got her four years ago and yet she was the sweetest dog I've ever met. All her vets (adrenal gland tumor surgeon, specialist in internal medicine, cardiologist, neurologist, emergency vets + her regular old DVMs) sent flowers or books or cards ... just overwhelming the impression one animal can make. And their heartfelt responses pale compared to our friends and neighbors who have sat and cried with us. One is even painting a portrait of her as a momento. People are just incredible when you least expect it but need it most. And I'm crying again...

I definitely sympathize. My little terrier was my faithful companion for 13 years - through the very worst and loneliest times of my life. And I still tear up (like now) thinking of her and still tell her quietly she was the best dog, and its been four years already. One of the best gifts I ever got was a hand drawn portrait of her that one of my kids commissioned. Our dogs are the most loving and faithful companions.

Both my moms dogs passed in the last 6 months, the younger one to bladder cancer first and the older one to old age a few months later

The younger one hit me harder, because she was very much "with it" mentally, just her body was too sick to function, we put her down when she started to be in pain

The older one was a bit easier, because it was so obviously time, but still sad none the less

The first one passed in winter with snow still on the ground, but we had like a global warming heat wave for a couple days, perfect timing, at least we could break the ground to bury her, wasnt too frozen, but was still a bit tough to dig the first 6 inches or foot

My stepdad dosnt want another dog, at least not yet, but my mom does, so theres some arguments going on about that, I side with my stepdad because he's retired and has to do all the work raising the dog, while my mom works and isnt home 8 hours a day

Totally. I glanced at GD Quest and think that's something I'd pursue after my first bout. Basically just working to get a basic grasp of the bare minimum mechanics of working in the program and then branch out from there. The game jam is an excuse to put out, basically, a tutorial-made game with some custom sprites thrown in, so most likely 2D. I've been meaning to commit to learning Godot for a while and am using this as an actual deadline so my monkey brain can start.

I actually managed to miss their repositories you posted, so thank you for drawing my attention to that. I'll probably poke around at some point and see what I can learn from that.

I need to find a new job. I’m a web developer and I’m not sure where I want to go next. My focus is backend, and I really enjoy data engineering and could see myself maybe working in data science. I love Python. But I’m also skilled in system administration, and lean very heavily toward moving into DevOps. Something that’s holding me back is feeling like I need to study a bunch for whiteboarding or general brainteaser tests in interviews. I hate that I have to “prove” I can code by doing compsci puzzles. I’m just not sure what I should focus on right now. All I know is that my current job is a dead end.

I bring my iPad to work and could load it with my elearning videos. I’ve got the Udemy app. If I’m watching something coding related, everybody will just think I’m researching a problem. But trying to fit in studying at home just isn’t working. Beyond being tired, I have a pretty full social life, and I’m trying to work on my physical health as well. • Exemplary

        Long story short?

Basically the evangelical "Christians" in the US have been working on a couple different long-term projects for a few decades in order to:

        1. Remove their children from the educational and socialization processes of secular society via the homeschooling movement which (while admittedly it is by the very nature difficult to get totally accurate numbers for) has somewhere between 1-2 million children in. The vast overwhelming majority of which are comprised of evangelically raised kids.
        2. Indoctrinate them into a hardline belief that everything secular is literally the work of the devil, is evil and all those that are outside of this belief pattern are functionally the enemy and should be treated as such and given "no quarter".
        3. use their existing power of the previous generations to soften the entries and open the gates in order to make #4 more easily achieved (see the Federalist Society judges, the religious conservative SCOTUS, etc)
        4. Install this next generation of hardline believers in order to further the goal of instituting theocratically informed legislation following this myth of "America as a Christian Nation™".

There's a ton of more side info and various secondary groups that I go into including the fact that one group holds weekly prayer breakfasts in the Pentagon and counts several dozen generals and high-ranking officers in their ranks, another that has active Navy SEAL members at their recruitment/propaganda concerts in which they encourage teens using violent imagery to "be a warrior for Christ" and "let the streets run red" sorta rhetoric.

Like I said, it's many pages and gets in depth but the long and short of it is they're much further along than even the most doomer-pilled think they are and it's terrifying frankly. It's a multi-generational takeover strategy that has made and is making significant headway.

    I should be marking essays.

Marking is the bane of my life. It's the worst. I love almost everything else about my job, but I hate marking.

Thankfully my current tutoring positions don't require me to give a numerical score, thank god. That's a whole other, whole lot worse, ballgame.

Oh, can I relate to that. Ex teacher and I hated marking essays. Actually I pretty much hated marking anything. There is no joy in it, and people not in the profession think that you get to go home at 4 pm so whats the big deal. The big deal is that you're carrying a stack of essays that will take up all the time you have from supper til midnight and most of your prep time tomorrow and some of tomorrow evening too, but more than likely you're going to procrastinate on it til you have two other assignments on top of the essays and now the guilt is so strong that you dont enjoy ANY of your 'free' time because of that niggling voice telling you to get back to marking. Ug. I DONT miss it one bit.

Exploring tildes while I planned to play Warframe. I do love it here though, so I don't feel this is a waste of valuable gaming hours

I used to have a daily tasks sheet that was crammed with obligations but I quit working 'for the man' years ago and honestly, if I get around to mowing the lawn Ill have done everything on today's list. Some days I kinda feel guilty, cause my wife is still working (her choice). But mostly not.

Eating. I am so bad at something that is supposed to be a natural survival skill. It’s not that I don’t have food. I meal prep. I just rarely ever have an appetite.

Walking the dog. I work from home and I'm on my lunch and I finished eating but I just don't have the motivation to go out and walked the dog. The funny thing is if I walk the dog more often I would have the motivation to go out and do things like walk the dog.

    A vicious circle.

I feel you on this one, but my dog has such sad, sad eyebrows that he'll wiggle at me, and no matter how tired I am I can't resist his tiny sad face when he wants a walk.

    Nothing.

Like, I'm on vacation so I'm literally supposed to do nothing. Instead I've been running every sunrise, doing chores, and trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. The last part is because I received a job offer that I'm mulling over right now.
