Horror games to play during October

With October approaching, it's time to play some horror games! Horror is my favorite genre. It's chock full of emotion and creative game design. It's a genre that has to continuously reinvent itself to avoid getting stale, which leads to dozens of incredible games.

The games I'd like to play for the first time are:

  • Silent Hill 2 - I was holding out for a proper remaster for over a decade. It's finally here, but it's $70! I'll probably have to bite the bullet.
  • Resident Evil Village - I've been meaning to play this for years and already own it! On sale for $10.
  • Resident Evil 4 (Remaster) - I played the original but not the new remaster. On sale for $20.
  • Dead Space - Just bought this on sale a few weeks ago. It looks really good! On sale for $12.
  • Alien Isolation - Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I should really play this.

Now for some recommendations:

  • Resident Evil (REmake) - This is where you start if you're new to horror. Absolutely iconic, and not too scary thanks to its cheesy B-movie script, which can be humorous. On sale for $5.
  • Resident Evil 7 Biohazard - This game was a true return to form in the horror department. Absolutely loved it. On sale for $8. Genuine steal.
  • Inscryption - Not very spooky. Has a fun card game and a lot of intriguing ideas.

Are there any games you're looking forward to playing?

Do you have any recommendations?

As someone who is a coward and cannot play most horror games, it's worth noting SOMA has a "safe mode" where the monsters aren't a threat. So if you're anxious about monsters in horror games, I suggest giving Normal mode a shot first and switch to Safe Mode if they scare you too much. The story has enough psychological and existential horror going on that it's scary even without monsters.

Side-note: I never played it myself, just watched people play it on Youtube. SOMA has one of the most haunting storylines I've encountered. I recommend going in blind, just keep in mind that existential dread is the primary theme of the game.

Even without the threat from the enemies it’s still quite unsettling, particularly because the atmospheric horror is done really well throughout. For me it was just the right amount of uncomfortable. Too much and I wouldn’t have seen it through.

The best way I can think to endorse it is to say that it feels like a playable Black Mirror episode.

This patch was actually part of an elaborate ARG! People are speculating that the ARG is a lead-up to Frictional announcing their next game. There's ongoing discussion of the ARG on Frictional's official Discord server.

Here's a picture of the new email that was accessible from Simon's PC in SOMA: link

Once deciphered, the glitched text from the email reads hotelsamsara.com. Signing up for Hotel Samsara's email newsletter caused them to respond with a puzzle that led to a Twitter account called FollowersOf__, which has been posting even more enigmatic breadcrumbs.

Actually, the latest development in the ARG is a countdown that will elapse in less than 3 hours - you can see it for yourself by going to hotelsamsara.com/admin and using the password LOOPED. Pretty fun stuff!

Hell yeah, happy to hear you are enjoying it! Its really a perfect horror game to slow burn through the month, especially as the game is more often unsettling than plainly scary. I find myself thinking about it often, pondering the mysteries and scraps of lore I have found, even as im taking a short break to finally dive into Silksong. I do plan to go back and dump more time into it before spooky month is over. Also, Im desperate for discourse on the game that isnt from people who have already seen all there is to see, so if you feel the need to yap about anything from the game, please do send it my way.

Just gotta say that I love some of the horror adjacent humor elements peppered throughout the game. Examples I've experienced so far (I'm only about 13 days in):

        • If you go to bed hungry, there's a good chance you'll have a dream where you have to parkour on giant chickenburgers to collect small chickenburgers. The atmosphere is spooky, but the premise is just so goofy.
        • If you run too fast down the stairs you might smack into the door and fall down.
        • Yesterday I was collecting signals and all of a sudden food started appearing all over the desk. I kept trying to pick it up, but it said I couldn't and the food would disappear. Then I realized I was just really hungry and hallucinating the food. :D

Day 17 spoilers, and rant The anti grav event nearly ended my game. I had spent so much time meticulously organizing my base, and had carefully placed the very fragile light tube gifts from the aliens in places so they wouldn't get broken by Kerfur. >_<

I feel your pain lol. The game does do things like that from time to time, i think keeping you from getting too comfortable in your space. It is frustrating having to get my workspace back in order and clean up all the junk each time something extra kooky happens, I definitely get your frustrations there. For what its worth, there is a hammer and nail system I havent experimented with much as of yet, but maybe you could nail down the essentials? To hopefully keep them from being tossed around so much.

You seem like a survival horror enjoyer, so I am going to propose Alan Wake 2. Its a very good survival horror game with an amazing narrative and sense of style and uniqueness you don't often see in a high budget production. It helps that you dont really need to have played the first game to jump in, because the first game and the time gap between the release of the first and second are part of the story. Its good at catching you up to speed on any of the important stuff you should know from the first game. Unsure of your platform, but its getting added to PS plus on October 1st, and is available on Xbox and PC as well, but be warned on PC its requirements are mighty indeed. Also, criminally, its digital only on all platforms, so take that into account if thats something you care about.

Another reccomendation in a similar vein but on the opposite end of the spectrum, I have also been enjoying Look Outside. Its a 10$ indie survival horror game on steam, that plays in the top down rpg maker style. The basic premise is that an unprecedented cosmological event is effecting the planet, causing anyone who looks outside and observes it to be changed physically and mentally. Its told to you that it will last for fifteen days, and so for fifteen days you have to pass time in your apartment and explore the building. Its got unsettling encounters galore, limited resource management, crunchy but evocative art, and a truly amazing soundtrack. Highly recommend if you have a pc or steam capable device.

Additionally, for whats it worth, I found Silent Hill 2 to be worth the 70$ in my eyes, a very good experience that has only minor issues with pacing in some sections. I enjoyed the original but never finished it, but i was pretty hooked on the remake till the end.

A lot of people watched a playthrough of Iron Lung (a decent chunk from Markiplier), which sort of makes playing the game a moot point when you know what's going to happen.

For those that have been spoiled on IL, I recommend Voyager-19. It is a spiritual successor to IL made by the youtuber Miziziziz. It's a quick playthrough (about 1-2 hours), and I was really glad I got to experience a similar existential crisis with a slightly different theme!

So I bought and beat Voyager-19. It's definitely a lunglike!

In a weird coincidence, I watched a documentary on the Voyager probes called It's Quieter in the Twilight maybe a month or two ago (absolutely fantastic film, by the way -- highly recommended). When playing Voyager-19, I was able to immediately identify a mechanic in the game that was a big part of that movie (I'm being vague so as not to give any spoilers). I just assumed it was drawn from the Voyager missions in general.

Well, after beating the game, I went to the Making Of entry in the menu which brought me to a YouTube playlist of devlogs. In those, the developer mentioned getting inspiration for the game from It's Quieter in the Twilight. So, that was really neat for me!

The rest I'll toss in a spoiler box so I don't ruin the game for anyone else:

        Spoilers

Loved the concept, mostly liked the execution. Loved the ending in particular.

I actually thought it was going to go a different way. I thought it was going to end with you stuck out in space and having to effectively make the decision to turn off your own life support. I liked the predatory "planet" much better.

I will say that I thought it got a little long in the tooth in the middle (which feels like a weird thing to say for such a short game). I think a few more spooks or things that shook up the formula in the missions leading up to the final one would have helped it from feeling a little rote.

That said, it's a minor complaint on something I still otherwise enjoyed. So, thanks for the recommendation, Wrath!

I just started Alien Isolation (and, in parallel, Alien Earth which I rather like so far). I meant to play this for ages and ultimately went with the Switch version because it's also a fascinating technical feat (IMO the best looking game on the system, no idea how they pulled this off). I'm maybe 3 hours in and so far it's great! I'm not 100% convinced about the mix of typical space-survival-horror tropes (collecting scrap, crafting, audio logs) and the extreme focus on stealth and more "cinematic" moments (I love System Shock and whatnot but it seems the scavenging mechanics seem to mostly be used to drag it out into a much longer game than it had to be?).

All the new Resident Evil games are amazing, wholly recommended!

As for more obscure indie horror recommendations, I always bring up Lone Survivor. It's an ultra-low-res pixel art horror game with amazing music, survival mechanics and David Lynch logic. The true horror is that it came out 13 years ago and I thought it's like 5, lol. Fuck time.

I am quite fond of the vibes in Withering rooms. I bought it on a whim during last year's spooky season and it definitely hit the mark. To quote myself:

Withering Rooms is technically a side-scroller horror roguelite, but I think roguelite might be a misleading description. Roguelites tend to be grindy affairs that relegate the story to the background. In Withering Rooms, however, the story is the hook: you are trapped in a dream, set in the grounds of a Victorian manor. The dream is based on the real world, yet magic and monsters run amok -- why? In atmosphere, characters, and quests the game drips aesthetic.

Beyond the first five or so hours, the game isn't that difficult, which is why I again resist labeling Withering Rooms a roguelite despite it technically being one. Instead, it quickly evolves into a sort of power fantasy, allowing you to equip spells and guns that will make short work of most enemies and bosses. Moreover, most items tend to be unique rather than mere stat upgrades (in the spirit of Dark Souls), which makes exploration feel meaningful. And there is a great deal to explore, with new areas of the manor grounds revealing themselves in each new chapter.

Unfortunately first impressions are probably the worse, as you start rather squishy and have to hide from most enemies, making the game feel much slower and grinder than it ends up being. But on the flip side, this means that once you've cleared the first chapter, the game only gets better.

I was terribly sad to discover that my steam deck was too underpowered to play Silent Hill 2 (and has been disappointing me with the oblivion remaster). So I finally got around to building a PC for my new place! My 7600X and 9070 XT should be good for playing that and a few other games I've wanted to play.

Of course, the last time I built a PC, my first game was half-life, so I might have to play some low budget horror game that could be played on a calculator to keep with tradition.

Those are some big games you listed, but if you're looking for a quick indie game that will make you shit your pants, I would suggest The Mortuary Assistant. I hadn't been that freaked out by a video game since I played Resident Evil 2 on my N64. The game pairs nicely with the 2016 film The Autopsy of Jane Doe, so you can knock both out in an evening and then spend the next day praying that you'll never encounter a cadaver.

If you haven't seen them, you'll enjoy it more going in blind. These games have always been priced very low. Looks like the bundle of all 7 of them is ~$30 on Steam currently. If you don't want to commit to buying them all, the first 3 are less than $3 each.
