What's your favorite music album to get high to?
I'm looking for recommendations actually, personally my favorites are Björk's Homogenic and Blue Bell Knoll by Cocteau Twins, but I also enjoy some orchestral music like Tchaikovsky's ballet suits and Ravel's Bolero.
I'm looking for full albums, preferably slow paced and that don't sound too "dark" (so no stoner metal).
I don't get high much these days but the song can i kick it by a tribe called quest is a favourite of mine so if I were to choose an album it would be peoples instinctive travels and the paths of rhythm.
I was gonna say the low end theory. The production is perfect and the upright basslines through the whole album make me float.
lets be honest. anything by a tribe called quest is a jam
I think that the consensus here is that people just like to listen to music when they're high. It's a great combo. That said, I think Demon Days by Gorillaz is a really cool album and the 3 song run at the end of the album is really neat. Also, The Richest Man In Babylon by Thievery Corporation is a solid dub album if you don't feel like putting all of your attention on the music.
True, but matching vibes is a good way of exploring. I'm more inclined to branch out if a person has 2+ that are in my figurative top 10.
Massive Attack - Protection and/or Mezzanine
I love Massive Attack, I actually watched them play live a few days ago ♥️
Do you like chill hip-hop? If so, maybe:
Damn Fine by mtbrd
Sounds pretty nice actually, I'll listen the full thing
I have two.
The Dark Side of The Moon, Pink Floyd
Modern Addiction, Tender
I am in my 40's, so I'm old enough to understand that listening to Dark Side of the Moon is supposed to be some sort of special experience, but I had never had/needed the opportunity to do it.
Recently I had a gummy, put on my headphones and took my dogs on a long walk while listening to it end to end.
What a saxophone solo. Did you guys know this album had a saxophone solo? WTF?
Also in my 40s and never got really got into Pink Floyd, or getting high, until a few years ago. It felt ironic/cliche the first time I tried them together (with Wizard of Oz, lol). But the album got into regular rotation pretty quickly after.
My favorite is the great gig in the sky. Those vocals feel like the center of the whole album for me.
The sax is fun too though ;)
I really like Wish You Were Here too.
The beautiful of listing to Floyd with good headphones is finding all the instruments that you never noticed before.
The fun really starts when you start to wonder what if the gibberish isn’t just gibberish.
Sometimes when I have a free morning, I lie down on the couch to listen to this album; it gives me a mild psychedelic feeling, without getting any drugs involved :)
You guys should search out the Dark Side of the Sky live bootleg.
Stony strolls with the puppers and some mellow jamz... 10/10 will do again (repeatedly)
Dark Side of the Moon is one of those albums I used to listen to way too much and now I got tired of, BUT is one of the best albums for those activities.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to the Heavens
I have tried this album once or twice, it's a good experience but kinda slow, if you're a bit tired it can put you to sleep right away.
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Tales of the Inexpressible by Shpongle, my favorite track on that album is "Once Upon The Sea Of Blissful Awareness". Downtempo chill psychedelic trance.
Also recommend Colour Haze's self-titled album, I especially like the song "Peace, Brothers & Sisters!". Groovy stoner rock that isn't too metal or dark.
You reminded me of Shpongle. Thank you.
Are we counting a runner’s high? If so, then Racine carrée by Stromae. Is my go to when I get in the zone. Bâtard is usually the song I finish my run on.
Anything from Carbon Based Lifeforms
I have a massive playlist of all their stuff I used as background music when I'm working. Good stuff
Daft Punk - Discovery, particularly in video form of Interstellar 5555.
The Orb - The Dream
Edit (I'm just gonna keep appending as I remember as it has been a few years):
Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz - Kings of Crunk
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Rush - 2112
Anything by Lemon Jelly or Bonobo
Never caught another fan in the wild!
lemonjelly.ky for chill romancy.
'64-'95 is my personal favorite, with a nice Shatner cameo.
THERE ARE DOZENS OF US
Honestly it's just such a vibe. I was introduced to them by my first girlfriend so there's a lot of nostalgia tied up in listening to them too.
I just remembered: The Shatner bit on 64'-95' was a mutual collaboration.
He did the lyrics for their one song, Go. They did the instrumentals for his track "Together" on Has Been.
Has Been is one of my top ten albums. Ben Folds is a musical genius that brought out the best in Shatner.
I never knew that was Shatner, actually. Surprising! Is there something, somewhere, that lists their samples for that album? It's such a cool concept to me.
Not that I know of, sadly.
If you'd asked me this question in high school I'd have said The Universe Smiles Upon You by Khruangbin. They're bigger and better than ever now and also my current answer: Ali by Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin.
Khruangbin is amazing
Check out I Would Not Live Always by John Francis Flynn. I'd describe it as psychedelic Irish folk.
I listened to Tyler the Creator's IGOR and Kero Kero Bonito's Time 'n' Place with some leftover edibles and really enjoyed it. Might give it another try with Magdalena Bay's Imaginal Disk when my kids are a little older...
oh, I try the Magdalena Bay's album, it was one of my favorite releases from last year but I never tried to listen to it high.
Wow I completely forgot about Kero Kero Bonito. My friends and I bumped that flamingo song for a full summer in high school. Thanks for the memory.
Oh man, give their newer stuff a try if you haven't heard it. They got noisy and melancholic and apocalyptic and dancey, and somehow they didn't lose the infectious, optimistic edge.
Time 'n' Place is probably my favorite album.
I don't smoke these days (turns out losing family to lung cancer makes it less appealing), but these are some good hits I used to play with bowls or might still pick for other not weed drugs. Bolded are the top recommends based on your request for slow and not too dark.
-Any of the first several Black Sabbath albums
-Metaphorical Music and Modal Soul by nujabes
-Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin
-The Wall by Pink Floyd
-Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
-Midnights by Taylor Swift
-Cigarettes After Sex, I mostly play the I. EP back to back with Affection but it all slaps
-Any of the Final Fantasy Distant World performances, though the first 2 are my favorites.
-The Mollusk by Ween
-An Awesome Wave by alt-j
-Kind of Blue by Miles Davis
-Timeout by Dave Brubeck
-Today by Galaxie 500
I used to smoke a lot of weed.
I find this particular one unfun, though I enjoy Wish You Were Here immensely.
I get that, The Wall is a ride!
Oh man, I wish I knew Galaxie 500 in my weed smoking days! I might have to come out of retirement for a night to give it a try.
I forgot to mention Nujabes on my to go list, I actually have those two albums on vinyl, they're great.
That's a very unusual suggestion, I might try it haha
Yeah Midnights is different from the pop or pop country stuff you might associate with Swift, I'd call it chill wave. Never considered myself a fan but I heard a cool song on the radio, Google told me it was Lavender Haze by Taylor Swift and I was like no shit ok? Then my friend showed me Anti-Hero and I was like this is cool and the video is funny alright let's check this album out. Turned me into a full blown Swiftie lol.
I've been coming back to nujabes a lot lately, his stuff really hits. I'm not good at finding music but I haven't found hip hop with similar themes.
I gave Midnights a listen and I liked it, sounds similar to Carly Rae Jepsen's style and I'm all for that
I'm glad to hear it, thanks for sharing :)
I would have never thought to partake with The Mollusk (or any Ween for that matter) but that sounds like a hoot.
WHOOOOOACEAN MAN
Haha Ween is quintessential drug music to me! On one of my earlier shroom trips, my friend's cousin put some tracks from Guava on for me. Her name was Sarah so that was part of it, but then Push Th' Little Daisies came on and I was like "whaaaat is going onnnnn..?" And so began my venture into weird rock.
I’m seeing some great recommendations like Talk Talk, Carbon Based Lifeforms, and Floyd (of course). Can’t wait to dig into some of these new recs. These are some of my favorites from back in the day and that have found their way in, depending on the feels I want to catch in the moment:
• Zero 7: Simple Things
• Zero 7: When It Falls
• Emiliana Torrini: Love in the Time of Science
• Radiohead: OK Computer
• Radiohead: Kid A
• A Winged Victory for the Sullen: The Undivided Five
• Boards of Canada: The Campfire Headphase
• Beck: Morning Phase
• Kyuss: Welcome to Sky Valley
Its been a while, but i can't help regress to my teenage/college pothead days and swing wildly from lyrical and mellow beach-stoner beats like Jeremy Loops - Critical As Water or Sean Koch - Your Mind is a Picture , to all out metal like Cains Offering - Stormcrow and eventually end up on weeb punk/jazz stuff like The World Ends With You Soundtrack.
Apart from a few Stormcrow tracks, most of these albums are pretty measured and not too overstimulating.
(Sorry, no spotify. Only use YTMusic)
I love the soundtrack of that game, very underrated, I'll give it a try. Also, if we talk about game soundtracks, Sim City 4 has one of the best ones to listen while high, even if you didn't play the game it's a drum-and-bass masterpiece.
So strictly answering the question, The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium. However, while it has slower moments it is frantic for lack of a better word (and there's a reason for it) and in sections might be considered dark. It's a concept album and was mind blowing and eye opening when it dropped. Still my favorite album to listen to while high and possibly on other things.
The Mars Volta is a great recommendation because if you don’t like the idea of getting high to their early stuff, you’ll probably like getting high to their later stuff!
I’m with you personally; love me some Deloused, and it was a formative album as a teenager and aspiring musician.
Edit: this is also me making sure you’re aware their new album just dropped a day or two ago!
obligatory it's been a while but check this out https://album.link/gb/i/1440179194
I don't really listen to full albums, but lately, Half Moon Run - A Bleamish In Great Light and Seasons Of Change have been great listens while high.
The Ark sound tracks are really good. The Aberration intro is really immersive.

Current Events by John Abercrombie. Spacious and understated jazz fusion until some point nearing the end where it explodes into something more like free jazz.
I'd recommend either Broken Soul Jamboree or Jettison Mind Hatch, both by Tipper. Or Surrounded.. or Seamless Unspeakable Something. Basically you need to listen to any downtempo album by Tipper.
PS - here is a more ambient/psychedelic mix by him as well, if you ever trip I'd definitely save this one! :)

I’m a little surprised that Dopesmoker by Sleep hasn’t shown up here yet. To me that was the quintessential doobin’ music back in college. A 63-minute long dirge about a hashish-fueled pilgrimage by the Weedians to the holy land may not toot everyone’s horn, but it sure does work for me.
Even tho I enjoy listen to them while sober I can't handle that much distortion.
My tied-for-#1 recommendations (which have not been mentioned already) are
The former because it's bombastic and complex and will just drench a listener in the joy of rhythm. Bolero is one of my own favourites for high listening, and Mingus' third stream work conveys a similar hypnosis.
The latter because you said you didn't want anything too dark, and that Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven was too slow, so all my other post rock go-tos were knocked out of contention. Spirit of Eden is deeply moving, without quite cohering, and its use of space is entrancing even sober. If you like it and want more, Laughing Stock is much, much darker, but works in similar modes.
Honorable mentions to the works of D'Angelo and George Clinton's bands (Parliament and Funkadelic).
Edit: Apologies, missed the slower preference. Let My Children Hear Music would be a suitable substitute over Black Saint for a Mingus rec.
I was so impressed by Talk Talk when I dove into their catalog. Spirit of Eden and The Colour of Spring are my favorites.
Parliament - Mothership Connection
Pretty much any Pink Floyd album, as has already been aptly pointed out.
I’d add, Bauhaus, Ozric Tentacles (but maybe only live), The Rest of Dr. Hook (not misspelled). Anything from the glastonbury sound.
The Lemon of Pink by The Books is fantastic and like nothing else I've heard. Everything out by The Books really.
Dr. Dog - The Psychedelic Swamp
Moon Duo - Stars Are the Light
Gerry Rafferty - City to City
Roxy Music - Avalon
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Forgot one...
Pink Floyd - Animals
Curated based upon your request; not too fast or dark.
City to City is one of the coolest albums I've listen, I'll give it a try to the other ones you're suggesting.
Like many here, I've gotta go back to my college stoner days for some full album recs.
This one is absolutely going to date me (at least even more than the prior two did), but:
pretty much anything in the early Pretty Lights discography - especially the 2010 trilogy (Making Up a Changing Mind, Spilling Over Every Side, and Glowing in the Darkest Night), or Filling Up the City Skies.
All Hour Cymbals - Yeasayer
Like Drawing Blood - Gotye (he's so much more than the one hit wonder he's seen as here in the US, and is excellent stoned music)
Loving you guys' taste! I'll second a bunch of stuff seen elsewhere in this thread: Floyd, Zeppelin, Gorillaz, Massive Attack, Sleep, Kyuss, Dylan, Beck, The Mars Volta, Radiohead, Boards of Canada, Sabbath, King Crimson, Thievery Corp.
I can't get high anymore but my girlfriend is an every day smoker, asked her and she came up with some great ones:
I'll add also that there was a span of several months in 2005-06 when Portishead - Dummy didn't leave my car's CD player, it was the soundtrack to every blunt ride.
I don't really do it anymore, but when I did, a couple of my favorite albums were Does it Look Like I'm Here? by Emeralds, and Departure Songs by Hammock. Both have a range to them, some of it is lighter, some darker, and they take a while to get where they're going (which always felt right to me in that state of mind). Both do instrumentals. Both bands have more albums so if you like either, you'll probably find more to enjoy.
Thinking about it, a couple of lyrical songs I liked were I Wanna Take You Out by Part Time, Pluto by Work Drugs, Saber-Tooth and Bone by Surfer Blood, Shadow by Wild Nothing, and Wasting Time by Day Wave. The songs are pretty indicative of the rest of what they do, if you like one hit up the album it's from and you'll probably enjoy it.
Guess I'm gonna be listening to these today because that always happens when I revisit them lol, thanks for that
this could be a very, very long list so i'll just mention the first couple that pop into my head.
hope someone finds something they enjoy here :)
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing…
Tricky - Pre Millennium Tension
Chelsea Wolfe - Pain is Beauty
Jessica Pratt - Silent Songs
Low Roar - Low Roar (or O)
Radiohead - King of Limbs

Andre 3000 - New Blue Sun
Blue Daisy - The Sunday Gift
Boards of Canada (any album)

Clams Casino - Rainforest
