      Are there any albums by your favorite bands that make you think "Why didn't I listen to this sooner?" Or "Why is nobody talking about this one?" My unfortunate candidate for this title would be Maladroit by Weezer. It's such a weird shift in tone from Green and moreso from Blue or Pinkerton. It's a lot of short and sweet songs but between the kickass solos and chugging metal influenced chords, the whole album is a banger. You have songs like Burndt Jam and Slave that have a much more mellow and poppish, feel; and then you have more aggressive songs like Take Control and Dope Nose (The most well known hit off Maladroit). It seems that in the wake of people not liking the Green album much, this stellar poppy, metal-y, strange yet great little album was panned over, which is a crying shame.

      I've been trying to tame tracking from services like Facebook. I installed many ad blockers and tracker blockers on all of my browser, I don't install FB app on my phone, but I still install Instagram app and WhatsApp.

      Something creepy (but totally expected) just happened to me. I haven't really been in contact with a friend of mine for quite some time, and we finally chatted again using WhatsApp. Not long after that I opened Instagram, and her photo was the first one I saw haha. It's funny because I don't think I've seen any photos from her in quite some time before this on my IG feed.

      Might just be a coincidence, but with all discussion about how creepy they're trying to make their platform as sticky as possible, I wouldn't be surprised if IG's feed algorithm do take into account your correspondence on WhatsApp as well (I live in a country where everyone uses WhatsApp).

      Either a search function, or save function would come in very handy here.

      I'd like to see the ability to save comments made a first class feature here, rather than an upgrade as it is on Reddit.

      I got into FOSS recently and have been researching replacements for common proprietary software. Along with reddit (r/privacytoolsio) I have used alternativeto.net & privacytools.io. I would love to make a list on Tildes for anyone that is also interested in this stuff.

      Telegram -> Signal: signal.org
      Discord -> Riot: riot.im (surprised this isn't as popular)
      Google -> FindX: findx.com (there are many others but this is my favorite)
      .................searX: searx.me
      Reddit -> Tildes: tildes.net (obviously)
      Chrome -> Firefox: mozilla.org (there are many others but this is my favorite)
      LastPass -> Bitwarden: bitwarden.com (my personal favorite but there are others)
      Photoshop -> GIMP: gimp.org
      FireAlpaca -> Krita: krita.org
      Microsoft Office -> LibreOffice: libreoffice.org
      Windows Media Player -> VLC: videolan.org (Best FOSS ever)
      uTorrent -> qBittorrent: qbittorrent.org
      ...................Deluge: deluge-torrent.org
      Adobe Illustrator -> Inkscape: inkscape.org
      Adobe Premiere Pro -> Blender: blender.org (mainly 3d stuff but can be used as animation)
      Windows -> Linux: ubuntu.com (ubuntu is just one distro, there are so many)
      Adobe Audition -> Audacity: audacityteam.org
      ..............................Ardour: ardour.org
      Github -> Gitlab: gitlab.com
      Trello -> Taiga: taiga.io
      Fraps -> OBS: obsproject.com
      Gmail -> ProtonMail: protonmail.com
      Youtube Client -> NewPipe: newpipe.schabi.org
      Outlook -> Thunderbird: thunderbird.net
      Adblock+ -> uBlock Origin: (you can get it in your browser's addon store)
      Unity -> Godot Engine: godotengine.org
      USD -> Bitcoin: bitcoin.org (I would suggest an altcoin like Stellar though)
      ... anything else? any programs you don't know a FOSS alternative to that I can find?

      I'm not sure if it's a vanilla reddit feature or if it comes from RES, but I've become reliant upon the preview that shows up under a comment box that renders your response through markdown so you can see the formatting before you post it. This doesn't need to be real-time, since that would likely detract from the "lightweight" technical goal, but I feel like it might be useful

      I just showed up yesterday to this great experiment, and find myself with some fresh-minted drama over politics and bans to ingest. While I wouldn't presume to propose a solution to the issues raised in and by those threads, I found myself looking to the comment tagging system and finding some space to improve conversation.

      My intent (as I believe is the intent of this community) is to help foster constructive discussion without outright banning inflammatory topics. I believe that simply ignoring controversial issues because of the problems they raise is at best stifling potentially useful discourse and at worst intellectually dishonest.
      Tags I'd like to see:

      • "Citation Requested" As a tag, it would be a more constructive way of saying "I don't believe you"
      • "Disreputable Source" / "Source Disputed" is a civil way of pointing out issues
      • "Reported" would be a tricky implementation, but useful as a way of flagging comments for removal. Should ideally only be applied to eg. doxxing or incitement

      There should also be a moderation feature for removing tags that are no longer relevant or incorrectly applied. Alternatively, the display of comment tags could be reliant upon a critical mass of "reputation points" which would allow for, say, 100 people with 1 "troll-tagging rep" to get a comment flagged, or 2 people with 50 troll-tagging rep to do so. This of course is dependent upon the reputation system being fleshed out and has the very real danger of creating power users

      EDIT:

      @jgb pointed out that this is a lively discussion see these

      Tags I missed that came up in other discussions:

      • "Insightful" as a positive, almost a super-upvote
      • "Solved" for a comment that resolves an issue

      And, according to @cfabbro, @deimos is working on a public activity audit that can then be built upon to improve moderation

      I've been out of the MTG scene for a while but I'm going to try to follow today in the background while I work. I'm really interested in how things go with the PT pushed back a few weeks from release, it doesn't sound like we're expecting any breakout decks to pop up. It should be starting right about now, the stream is available on Twitch.

      One of the biggest things I liked about Kuro5hin was the ability for content to initially be posted in edit mode, which encouraged edits and disallowed voting. In this way, it allowed a contributor to publicly draft out a story prior to the story being judged.

      The editable story would go into a separate, opt-in view mode so that people could select whether they wanted to see (and give feedback on) immature stories and then shift (time trigger or manual publish) into the main story feed.

      With Tildes' comment-tagging system, we could probably just tag all comments made during edit mode as "edit" and allow them to be merged (or not) with the mainline commentary. I'd suggest (based on experience 20 years ago :) that the edit mode comments be not initially merged into mainline discussion.

      Didn't know if i should post this in talk or tech, but my focus is on advice, so i guess this is the place.

      I am currently in the process of changing my career to be a web developer. Studied IT a few years ago, dropped out due to finances, and spent the last few years working crappy jobs.

      I designated all my spare time towards learning the basics. I'm confident enough in my knowledge of HTML and CSS, know how to use Bootstrap and i'm currently learning the basics of JS. The Udemy course i'm taking will cover NodeJS, jQuery and some more backend next. After that i plan on learning Wordpress and a framework i guess (React/Vue/Angular). Have i missed something here?

      My final goal is doing freelance web development. My question is, how plausible is this and what else do you suggest learning to have an easier time finding clients?

      Also, how soon do you figure i could start doing some basic work with simple websites (even if it means using Bootstrap / altering Wordpress themes)? My country is rather cheap, so even 500$/month on simple projects will be enough of a reason for me to quit my 9-5.

      Guess i'll need a portfolio too though.

      Anyways, thanks for reading. Any web devs out there care to offer advice? I'm dedicated to achieving this goal, but i'm somewhat lost still.

      There seems to be a solid community of Linux people growing here, so thought I might try asking...

      I'm building a head unit for my car, using a Raspberry Pi to a 7" (and eventually 10-14") touch screen.

      I'd like to have a fast-booting Linux distro with tiling windows that lets me set up a config file to launch a bunch of programs that are tiled perfectly edge to edge, with minimal border (a 1px line us OK), minimal header (just the name of the program? or none at all maybe), and have them all locked in place so I can't accidentally drag one or resize one when touching audio controls, for example.

      The idea is to have a few windows, such as an audio player, a GPS map, 2 dash cam feeds, and an OBDII style sensor readouts, all on screen at the same time, each sized differently.

      I've got each individual program working fine on Raspbian right now, but no idea how to go about the tiling-on-boot, locking them in place, etc.

      Can I do it with Raspbian with some specific window manager? or do I need a different distro?

      Thanks in advance.
