My spouse and I own a condo. The property management company that the home owners' association hired is generally mediocre (which is a huge step up from the usual scenario where most are actively awful). They do a reasonably good job of keeping us informed, but they way they do it is hilariously bad. Every email they send is sent as a .jpg and a .docx file with no actual text in the message. My email client renders it and I can read it, but it makes all of their emails unsearchable, and it makes filtering beyond the basic "emails containing address x" impossible.
I've asked them personally several times both electronically and in writing to please stop sending such correspondence and just send a regular email. (I honestly don't care whether it's plain text or HTML, just so long as it's searchable and filterable.) But it's so far been to no avail. I brought it up at the last HOA meeting and they agreed to also include their messages as text in the body of the email, but they don't. If I'm really lucky they'll have one or two sentences in text, but the rest is a .jpg and a .docx (or .pdf) of the actual body of the message. I've tried to explain that this is bad for people with disabilities and may even run afoul of the Americans with Disabilities Act, but they didn't seem to care.
It's not clear to me how one ends up sending emails in this form. I don't use any Microsoft products, which they probably can't comprehend, but I suspect this is some sort of Windows thing. Does anyone know how this happens and why? And more importantly, does anyone have suggestions for getting them to stop?

A sizable part of my aversion to a lot of anime is probably related to the fact that the majority of titles in the past couple decades are centered on children or teens, and by and large cater to that demographic. That in and of itself is fine, and some of the best anime explore the important themes of that stage of life, but the portrayals of kids in most shows are usually reductive, unrealistic, immature, shallow, or just plain stupid... and while most kids undoubtedly aren't quite ready to forge their own way in the world, I think children are more complex and often more savvy than they're popularly given credit for.
Having said that, what are some shows that do a good job of showcasing the depth of their young cast? Two have stood out to me:
-
Hourou_Musuko / Wandering Son. If this series can't humanize the struggle of growing up trans to you, you're dead inside. It's only 12 episodes if you watch the two specials (necessary to get the full story, they were edited together into one of the main episodes), but pretty much every one gave me so much pause to reflect on my own childhood.
-
Dennou Coil / Coil - A Circle of Children is the best depiction of children I've seen in anime. Creator and director Mitsuo Iso's respect for the characters, despite their age, is impressive, and I felt it captured the perspective of life at that age - the intra-group politics, the uncertainty, the courage, the discovery, the disappointments - very well. I think its strengths elevate what could have otherwise been a pretty straightforward adventure story with an interesting premise into something rather special.

I'm at a pharmacy, distributing their vaccine after hours the second it came in. I'm typing this up while my pregnant wife is in line to get her vaccine. If I get lucky maybe I do too. If not, my heart is still lighter knowing that my family is safer.
I'm filled with joy knowing that there is light at the end of this dark tunnel.
Thank you all for putting up with my special blend of near-persistent 2020 mania. Hopefully this will finally calm it for awhile.

So there is this game called Valheim that recently released. You may or may not have recently read the article where they claim to have sold over a million copies around a week after release.
I bought it to give it the 2-hour smell test and it seems pretty darn good. However, this game seems best played with others and I doubt my friend group will end up playing this. Renting a server seems pretty cheap so I was wondering how interested you would be in a Tildes community server? I would be down for paying for a month and seeing where it goes from there.
It looks like min slots for a server would be 10 slots but I would imagine that's okay since we all wouldn't be in the same time zone. I can scale this up if the demand is there.
Thoughts?

✂️🧵✂️ Sanity through crafting! ✂️🧵✂️
While I wait for supplies to come in the mail for my next sewing project, I made use of my hot glue gun and some odds and ends to learn something new and make this boutonniere for my step-son for Valentine's Day. The pink felt is leftover from another project and the green started life as a protective layer for storing that came with a pan. Here's hoping he wants to wear it! 🤞

The main reason I know musicals exist is Undertale, the Musical by Man on the internet. Out of the songs I have listened to (and aren't cliche), Star is definitely my favorite. There is a long review someone wrote on YouTube that was fixed by the creators of the video, and it describes why it's a good song in far greater detail than I could even imagine by myself.

Vernacular mental health terms are used in everyday language as a nonspecific indicator of extreme value judgement or deviation from an expectation or norm. Examples of words include 'crazy', 'cray', 'insane', 'whack', 'mental', and 'retarded'. I think we can criticise the language on numerous grounds:
- It normalises poor mental health as something extreme or atypical
- Where the language is used to connote a negative value judgement (example 3) it reinforces the association that "poor mental health" = "bad"
- It can be triggering to people with mental health issues because of the way they are or their condition is perceived or because of experiences they have had
- It can be imprecise, in the sense that there are often more contextually appropriate words to describe the specific quality being discussed
Examples:
- "This new track from Lone is insane!" -- positive use cf. 'extremely good'
- "I can't believe Tesla bought all that BTC, that's insane!" -- neutral use, no value or ethical judgement, observing deviation from typical or expected behaviour cf. 'unexpected'
- "Trump is fucking insane" -- negative use cf. 'extremely bad'
Some alternatives:
- 'wild' -- I use this particularly for positive and neutral connotations
- 'ridiculous' -- for the negative connotation
- Something more specific to the context, e.g. "Trump is fucking evil", or "This new track is banging", or "I had a hectic morning" instead of "I had a crazy morning"
Questions:
- Why has 'retarded' faced so much backlash and fallen out of acceptable usage, but other terms like 'crazy' have not?
- Are the criticisms valid and do they apply to all of the examples? Are there more grounds to criticise this language on that I have not listed?
- Are there other ways the language is used which is not covered in the examples?
- What alternatives do you use?
- Is use of crazy/insane/mental/... common in non-English languages? If not, what is used instead?
Thanks for your input! 🙏
