For myself, there's two pieces of anime media that I just don't understand the appeal of: My Neighbor Totoro and Evangelion, for different reasons.

I like a lot of Ghibli's work, like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, but I found Totoro mind-numbingly boring. It felt like 80% of the movie was them doing housework, followed by some conflict slapped on at the end. Beyond the typical Ghibli art style, there's nothing compelling in the whole movie.

I also kinda hated Evangelion. I thought the philosophy, one the the aspect's of the show that get's the most praise, was something out of a Philosophy 201 elective. The pacing was uneven, even for an anime, and the show's treatment of every single female character was straight-up gross, which is made even weirder due to the fact that half of them are 14.

    2. Warning: this post may contain spoilers

Neon Genesis Evangelion is out on Netflix. I'm thinking to use this topic as the megathread to discuss the (re-)watch, to avoid flooding the Tildes Activity feed with one topic per episode.

To borrow a past Tildo's approach, I ask that any top-level comments contain ONLY the episode number, such as "Episode 13" and no other text.

Press the Collapse replies button, find the top-level comment for the episode you care about, and reply under that top-level comment. If there's not yet a top-level comment with that episode number, create it.

Doesn't have to be JJBA either, could be another series which is currently airing.

This idea came to me last night when I was reading the post over on ~movies asking a similar question. I'm an avid user of ~music and I like to participate in the weekly "what have you been listening to" threads along with the Listening Club when possible, and I was wondering if something similar could be applied to another media group, and since I love anime and manga, my first thought was this one.

      Basically my questions here are:

Would a weekly "what have you been reading/watching" thread be something you would participate in?

      Secondly:

Would you prefer it be something more casual-based, or would you prefer it to be people writing reviews for things they've been viewing?

I think that one of the ways to spur more interest in media groups is weekly/monthly/whatever interval discussion threads and I'd also just personally like to see what other people here are thinking of the things they're currently watching or reading.

I've been going through some old videos I used to watch and stumbled back on this video essay by J.T Sexkik on the idea of Waifus and how it has taken on several ironic but also non-ironic dimensions.

I've always kind of enjoyed the more jokey aspect of the whole Waifu thing. In large part because I'm fairly insecure and protect myself by being obnoxious about my like of anime as a way of pre-empting judgemental remarks or inquiries. After all, I figured and still sometimes do, if you present the worst possible version of yourself then the only way to go from there is up, right? I'm starting to kind of come around on that, but I still occasionally joke about it.

Was wondering what other anime fans on Tildes views on it were

My favorite genre right now is probably the slice of life genre. i've recently finished 3-Gatsu no Lion, and i gotta say for an anime about shougi it hit me hard i may or may not have teared up on a few occasions... my favorite from the genre though is probably Clannad: After Story, now this one really made me cry, they break the floodgates and keep rescheduling repairs. so i have to recommend those two if you're looking for great slice of life anime.
