Well, guess it's time to set it free. :)

    A Guide to Fire Kings

Fire Kings are a Yu-Gi-Oh! archetype and deck that I deeply enjoy playing.

I was a bit frustrated with the existing resources about the deck - the YGO subreddits constantly recommend wrong things, and most actual knowledge is buried in the Fire King Discord server, where it's not handily accessible, nor able to be indexed by stuff like Google. We also had a combo spreadsheet made in Google Sheets, but it focuses on a variant of the deck I'm not playing and it's a bit outdated.

The goal was to take all that information and put it in one place. It ended up being a book that you could theoretically read start-to-finish, however I'd expect most people to either look for a specific card, or bookmark the combo pages for future reference, or just look for the information they need at a specific moment.

It's also not close to being finished - I covered the essentials, like the main deck and extra deck cards, covered the combo section and talked a bit about playing through your opponent's interruptions, but I feel like there's much more left to do. It's a great guide to start someone off and teach them how to play the deck, but it's not yet the comprehensive resource that I want it to be.

As such, I'm only releasing it here as part of the showcase and will continue to develop it through November. Then the plan is to get some peer feedback from some members of the Fire King Discord server before fully releasing it and announcing it in all the communities I participate in.

I know this is a really niche project, but if any YGO players are around here, I'd really appreciate you taking a look and telling me how you feel about it. :)

Wow, this is staggeringly detailed! Your command of the game mechanics is impressive, as is your ability to explain everything.

The guide is nicely laid out and works well on mobile. It’s quite long overall, but it’s broken into smaller, manageable chunks, each with an individual specific focus. You also made it very readable via text features, including links to cards and other information sources, as well as bolding and color-coding.

Best of luck with finishing the rest of the project. This is going to be such an amazing gift to your community once you finally do release it!

In the last couple of days of October I did manage to find some machine time to start on the curtains. I got this far (those support loops are pinned, not sewed) and ran out of time because Work happened, so no stretch goals were hit.

However, THE BED IS COMPLETE. I installed the lights, both a single LED strip around the frame at the head end, which is extra bright for reading comfortably with older eyes (our most regular guests are parents), and some decorative fairy lights on the frame too. There's a switch concealed behind the headboard for all the lights, and eventually I will install wireless chargers and usb sockets for guest use too. The underbed storage space is already filling up (one of the design considerations was making this space tall enough to take a standard large suitcase)

It has been bounce tested by the kid and pronounced good (zero wobbles, it's really solid). It has been sleep tested by my in-laws and also pronounced good. They like the fact they can get in and out easily because it's slightly higher than the old bed and also has access down either side, which the old bed did not. Here's a POV from lying in it

I did manage a mockup of curtains in place though, and it's pretty cool to lie in all cosy and surrounded. I will finish them, eventually.

Overall I'm really pleased with the amount I got done, and how well I did it. It's not just done, it's done well and should last for a long, long time. Might need a fresh coat of paint eventually, but structurally this ought to last decades. This project has been on the "one day" list for at least a year so thanks as ever to /u/kfwyre for prodding me into action.

Awesome work. I especially liked the machine time link. I bought some of these sewing clips and I much prefer them to pins for almost everything.

Oooh, they look nice, thanks for the link. I mostly avoid using pins as much as possible, I hemmed the one curtain I've made so far by rolling the fabric as it went under the foot.. It's not the best hem I've sewed but that's more to do with this cheap fabric being horrible than my technique! Pinning probably would have only made things more fiddly and annoying, without improving the result.

If I really care about the hems, I fold them and iron them, then pin or clip them. I find this is the best way to have them stay in place while sewing them. Not that I am an expert or anything. Very much a guerilla seamster.

When the fabric is not sewing well, I take some scrap and fold up a piece with the number of thicknesses I will be sewing, then run some test stitches while adjusting the tension and the stitch length. This helps find a sweet spot for that thread and fabric.

Also, if the fabric has any stretch, polyester thread is better because it also has some stretch.

The hems in your pictures look pretty good already though. I am just ruminating while I stew over the elections.

Pressing is definitely cheat mode for sewing in general, I often don't bother and just eyeball it because I'm lazy.

The issue with this fabric is cutting it properly because it's so thin and... wobbly? Not sure if there is a better word. It won't lie nicely, the weave is all over the place so marking and cutting straight is almost impossible. Even the selvedge won't lie straight. All this is unhelped by the curtain sections being 1.5m square which is bigger than my available table space.

    Hey there, space cats:

    Space Channel 5 x StepMania

    is go for launch!

I took the first level of Space Channel 5: Special Edition and converted it into a set of Dance Dance Revolution-style stages for StepMania 5. I used cheat codes to get perfect gameplay in Space Channel 5, recorded it with OBS, cut out what I needed with Kdenlive and ffmpeg, then used ArrowVortex to sync up with the music (this was the hard/annoying part), plot DDR steps to go with the Space Channel 5 gameplay, and generate the stepchart files for StepMania. Other assets like song banners are all just screenshots ineptly edited in GIMP.

To be honest, I’m not sure how well this really “works” as an idea. Adding DDR arrows to Space Channel 5 essentially removes the memory and quick-decision aspects of the game, making it much easier, and having the game presented as a pre-recorded background video means you miss out on the different things that can happen with less-than-perfect play. But hopefully it’s fun to play anyway, especially on a dance pad!

For people who just want to see what this looks like: you can watch a playthrough (well, AutoPlay-through) of the first stage here.

For the DDR freaks out there: you can get the song pack here. Unzip it to your StepMania Songs directory and reload your songs/courses if necessary.

    • Total file size is about 440 MB. That’s a bit heavier than I’d hoped for, but I didn’t have the time to better optimize the background video file size. Sorry!

    • The stepchart files are SSC format only, which means no compatibility with old StepMania versions (v3.9, etc). I needed to make sure the songs wouldn’t cut off after the last step, and I couldn’t find a way to do that using the old SM file format.

    • I recommend some specific StepMania settings:

      • Display Options: Appearance Options: BG Fit Mode: Fit Inside

      • Display Options: Appearance Options: Brightness: 100%

      • Display Options: UI Options: Danger: Hide

      • Disable announcers and dancer characters, if any

    • Report 1-0 contains no steps whatsoever, it’s just the intro cutscene. I wasn’t sure how to include it while also making it skippable, and that’s what I landed on.

    • The Single Medium charts largely follow the gameplay of the original game, but they replace X and Circle button presses with jumps and add a few extra steps for when people cheer.

    • Reports 1-1 and 1-2 also have Single Edit charts. These charts are the same as Single Medium, except they add a row of mines to jump over when people cheer. I couldn’t decide which I liked better, so you get both!

    • The Solo Medium charts are a 1:1 match for the original game inputs. For (an approximation of) the original Space Channel 5 experience, use a gamepad and play these charts with the Stealth mod active.

Thank you for organizing this year’s Timasomo @kfwyre, I had a lot of fun making this!

I cannot tell you how big the grin on my face was watching the video. This was an absolute joy!

I love how you made “chus” jumps, and you did a great job of slowly ramping up the difficulty, just like the game itself. Oh, and your tempo changes were IMMACULATE. Incredible work on those.

I haven’t downloaded the files yet, but I’m so excited to try when I get the chance. Fantastic work, Areldyb. I said this earlier, but as both a Dreamcast and a DDR fan myself, your project clicks with me on a genuinely personal level. Great job!

The costume was a big hit on Halloween. Unfortunately, I sprained my ankle so I didn't get to see most of the reactions, but my daughter was happy, which is what matters most. I got some great video of her doing "Help me Obi-wan, you're my only hope" and "Aren't you a little short for a storm trooper?". I even found a great tutorial and make a version where her face is blurred (seriously, it took like 10 minutes). But in the end, it felt too weird putting the video up, so here are a couple of stills instead: shot 1 shot 2.

As in my previous writeup, you can go to Printables to get the parts and build information make your own. There is also a printable version without the electronics and the unsliced whole model if you want it as a starting point for something else.

Thanks again @kfwyre for being our faithful host and coordinator. Looking forward to next year.

It's a Voron Trident 250mm, with a few basic mods. Tore down an old Voron 1.8 for most of the core parts and repurposed them for this, although it does have a BTT USB toolhead.

Oh, and I did get some quality hands-on time with the jukebox! Took out the old mono tube amp for a rebuild. Set of new old stock replacement tubes up top, and replaced all the 80 year old electrolytic capacitors inside the amp. Amazing how much more compact the modern ones are. For example, one filter cap that was the size of a C battery before got replaced by something the diameter and third the length of a AA!

Old electronics are kind of interesting to work on - no board or particular organization, just a nest of wires with components soldered on to wires and socket leads. Glad I've got a full original schematic.

Also tested the old resistors since apparently the 40s era ones were prone to drift with use and replaced a small handful of the more critical ones.

Next up, figure out what the previous owner did to make it coin free... while also rendering the disk change mechanism in operable. I have a rough idea (they seem to have forced it to continuously run the turntable without honoring the logic), but will need to trace some wires. The mode is potentially useful so I may add a couple switches inside the cabinet to allow it to be selectively enabled, as you can't change disks but it will continuously replay the current one.
