Timasomo 2026: Roll Call

October 1st has already hit in some parts of the world, so Timasomo has officially begun!

Posting in this topic is your official entry into Timasomo.

Let everyone know what your actual plans are. What are you going to make?

Anyone who was not already on the notification list will be added with a comment in this topic.

Once the date turns over to October 1st wherever you are in the world, feel free to start creating!

FAQs

What is Timasomo really though?

Timasomo is "Tildes' Make Something Month": a creative community challenge that takes place in the month of October. It is a chance to create something/anything!

There are no restrictions on what you can choose to make.

The best way to get a feel for Timasomo is to check out our previous Showcase topics, where creators share their creations with the community at the end of the event:

Can I participate?

Yes! Timasomo is open to anyone on Tildes! Please make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.timasomo.

The greater Tildes community is also encouraged to participate in discussion threads even if you are not actively working towards a creative goal. This is meant to be an inclusive community event -- all are welcome!

If you are interested in participating but do not have a Tildes login, please e-mail the invite request address here for an invite to the community.

If you do not want to create something but still want to check out the showcase, let me know in a comment here and I will add your name to a separate notification list that I will ping for the showcase topic only.

How do I sign up?

Make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.timasomo and/or are included in my notification list (simply comment on this topic to be added).

On October 1st, there will be a Roll Call thread. By posting your plans to participate in that thread, you have formally signed up for Timasomo!

Didn't it used to be in November?

Yes. Timasomo was originally inspired by NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month, which takes place in November.

Initially, I wanted people participating in NaNoWriMo to be able to share their work with Timasomo as well. In the entire time it has run, however, no participant has publicly submitted any work from NaNoWriMo to Timasomo. Instead, Timasomo has gained its own identity independent of NaNoWriMo (which, after recent events, is probably for the best).

Many participants from previous years have shared that October would be a better month for them personally, so we moved the event to October.

Also, the event was so fantastically popular that it regularly upstaged American Thanksgiving, thus we only felt it fair that Canadian Thanksgiving be targeted as well.

What are the rules?

Timasomo is self-driven and its goals are self-selected.

On October 1st, participants will commit to a creative project (or projects) that they plan to complete within the month of October.

There is no restriction on the methods/products of creativity: writing, painting, code, food, photos, crafts, songs -- if it's creative expression for you, it works for Timasomo!

Though most will be participating individually, collaborations are welcome too!

What is the schedule?

Timasomo begins October 1st and ends October 31st.

All creative output towards your goal(s) should be confined to this time.

This week prior to the start of October is for planning. There will be a few days at the beginning of November given to "finishing touches" before we have our final thread, which will be a showcase of all the completed works.

Do I have to share my creation(s) publicly?

Tildes is a privacy-respecting site, and you are not obligated to share your creation here if you do not want to. We'd still love to hear about it though, if you're willing to share process and details!

Is it Timasomo or TiMaSoMo?

Either.

I personally use "Timasomo" because I think it looks cleaner and because too much time on the internet has made my brain incapable of reading "TiMaSoMo" as anything other than sarcasm, but go with whichever you prefer.

The best option, however, is “𝑻𝑰𝑴𝑨𝑺𝑶𝑴𝑶” for reasons that are self-evident.

Nobody tell the timasomo police! Please!

I am already working on a project that couldn’t wait for October. It’s only partially finished, so there is still some to do. And I feel like people here might enjoy reading about it.

I am working harvest at a winery. There were some opportunities to get my own grapes, so I am going to be making my own wine! I have two different batches that I will probably be blending together. I’ll save most details for when the sharing posts happen, but for a small spoiler, I was able to get a bunch of Zinfandel grapes, and some very small Cabernet Sauvignon berries from the sorting lines.

I’d like to go through a solo journaling RPG (specifically one called Creation Myths) and turn the output into a short story, with a few accompanying pieces of artwork that I’d create on my iPad or on paper (TBD), and post it on my blog as well as any other fitting medium. There is always a vague “write more” goal on my mind and doing this would help me add something tangible and more than a blog post to my portfolio. If this qualifies, I’m in!

Ok! I have one big project I want to finish up and some of it is greenfield for me. I've kind of written up a kids story, but more accurately I made a whole punch of linocut prints and had a skeleton outline of a story I wanted that ended up not really being compelling. So, I want to rewrite the story - maybe with some input from folks here! - resort the prints I have made and make new prints for any new or changed story elements. I also want to make the font I teased at a month ago, and finally I want to bind the whole thing so it's a real, genuine book. Absolute stretch goal would be knitting a cover as big pink sweaters is a theme throughout, but I've never knitted before, nor do I know how that would end up looking.

As someone who knits, that could be a relatively attainable beginner project, but probably outside of the scope of this month. There are really great resources online for learning how to knit, but I recommend finding someone in person to teach you. If I wasn't backlogged on my knitting projects for the month I would offer to potentially knit a cover for you. Once the book is bound and if you don't feel like learning knitting, feel free to reach out as I might have some available knitting time by that point.

My wedding band is wood and bronze wire with a cyanoacrylate (CA) protective layer - basically fancy superglue. When I got it, I knew it was unlikely to last for my lifetime, so I was expecting to replace it around the 5 year mark as a milestone item. Unfortunately, the finish has chipped significantly over time and the wood is beginning to take minor damage as a result.

Since my 2 year wedding anniversary is near the end of this month, my plan is to make a new wedding band that will ideally last until the 10 year mark. I've been partially inspired by Alec Steele, brands like Midnight's Honor, and a puzzle ring I picked up at the renfest recently, but I will ideally not be taking any particular designs in their entirety. I've acquired some 12-gauge stainless steel wire for prototyping and some cold work, if one of those ideas catches me then I'll buy an appropriate length of silver wire instead. If a forged design ends up working better, then I'll acquire some basic stainless steel (I've mostly worked with basic carbon steels) that I can use to replicate the design.

I have plenty of ideas, but none actually written down so far. Since most of it is iterating on ideas, I didn't want to get too much done before Timasomo started!

I did this for 2024 at the start of 2025 and it was a great way to keep track of recent favorites, so I'd love to do this again before the year ends (and hopefully be more on top of this during 2027!)

My 1983 Toyota Tercel SR5 Wagon Big Block Project is still ongoing, not sure just yet what I'll do this month to be TiMaSoMo Project worthy, but I'll figure it out. Kinda thinking the exhaust system as it needs doing, the things in the way should be mostly done now/doable during the process, and I can show off how bad my welding skills have gotten in the year+ I haven't used them and I should have most, if not all, the parts to get it done instead of delays in ordering.
Will be shy one week worth of work as my anniversary is this month and my lovely bride and I are getting away for the weekend.

How big is the finished product from the kit supposed to be? I assume you won't be able to cut the pieces down as easily since they're all so intricate.

Will probably have to sharpen my chisel a couple of times depending on how it goes. It is going to be my first time with the kit, but it is not my first time using or sharpening the chisel.

Really it’s like a couple-of-hours project, but we’ll see. I’m setting the bar really low in the hopes I actually get around to it.

I had to dig through my comment history to see if I had ever posted these before. Time flies...

Back in 2024 I tentatively expressed interest in joining Timasomo and working on some polymer clay figures. Apparently I got sick (I have such little memory of 2024 due to events of 2025...) and had nothing to show. Last year I didn't join Timasomo but throughout September/October I worked on a little polymer clay Fuecoco holding my best attempt at Percival's weapon (a character from Granblue Fantasy) as a gift for an online friend who mains that character in the fighting game (and is pretty highly ranked? I don't know, I don't do fighting games). I wasn't completely happy with it but it was cute enough and had that personalized charm!

Then, of course, the package was stolen off his porch. Photos I took before I packaged him up are all that remain.

oh, and then the breakup happened right after. I've had plenty of ideas of things to make and no real willpower to try again!

Anyways, it's that same friend's birthday again soon and I'm thinking of either making the same Pokemon with some Final Fantasy Dragoon garb (...or just the iconic spear weapons, the armor sounds way too out of my league) as that's what he's mained in FF14 since the olden days. Not sure!

Finally - another online friend, but this one is getting married in November and I won't be attending the wedding. I'd still really like to make something small and personalized for the couple though. I have many ideas and quite possibly not the skill and time to execute, but will see how I feel after the birthday gift?

My goal is to build and paint at least one miniature for a Warhammer 40k army and/or Kill team. My idea is to do an ork version of the Leagues of Votann called "Legumes of Waaaghtann". They will be highly sneaky and thus painted in pink. Lore-wise I imagine them to be a band of Orks that took over a fallen squat stronghold and managed to convince the semi-senile Votann core that they were legitimate. To start I want to take a box of votann and print some ork heads to swap out. I might go with a kill team box if I like the models better.

I'm making wine! (and also maybe making some token progress on the radio kit I never finished last year, bleh)

I've been getting into small-batch winemaking lately. I've made some kit wines that turned out okay, and I've also tried wildly winging it with a few other batches (with expectedly inconsistent results; some were great, others were undrinkable trash). This time I'd like to follow the set process of the kit wines, but using all of my own ingredients, and see if I can bring some consistency into my process.

The juice I ordered won't show up until the 5th, so fitting it into October will be a tight squeeze, but I think it can work as long as bottling counts as "finishing touches".

Since my current creative outlet is working on my little Minecraft mods, I think it's time to make one more. You know, give myself even more ongoing maintenance.

I want to do something with stained glass panes, making them more like stained glass windows. The idea is that you'd make a frame block in one of a few set shapes, then fill in each section with different colours of glass. How will you make the frames? Don't know yet. How will you fill in the sections? Don't know yet. How will you change a section? Don't know yet. What happens if a side connection of the pane is made/broken? Don't know yet. That's all to figure out as I go.

I'll have some decisions to make early on about how to do this. I don't think I want to make it data-driven so other mods could add new glass types or frame shapes, which means that depending on how many possible combinations there are I might be able to use blockstates to render everything rather than a custom block entity renderer (like I have to for my Tiny Flowers mod). If there are too many combinations then I might have to use blockstates for the frames, then render the glass itself separately.

Quick edit: I ran some numbers. I'm using blockstates for the frames, then custom rendering for the glass. The number I got is large enough that it runs into precision issues and I can't trust it anymore. This is entirely my fault for reaching for JavaScript to do maths.

I'll be targeting Minecraft 26.1, though at the end/after the month I'll bring it forward to whatever version is the latest. I don't plan to port this back any further, since porting Tiny Flowers 2.0.0 back to even just 1.21.11 has been a massive pain.

Oh, and I need a name. Preferably before I create the project repository. I want something related to the craft of making stained glass, so the first thing I need to do is research (or outsource to the lovely folks here ;D).

Quick edit: currently thinking of "Leadlight" as a name, since that's another term for windows ("lights") with lead ("lead")

This is going to date me, but I used to love this tool called Photosynth that Microsoft discontinued from way back in the day. I think it'd be really useful for letting people walk through museums, for example, that they're unlikely to ever see in person (especially if it can be done in VR w/WebXR). Could also be nice for documenting some sites that're being demolished or destroyed so that they can be preserved, in some way, for future generations (e.g. historic buildings, old growth forests slated for clear cutting) and also to preview what could be there (e.g. walking through proposed buildings, looking at them composited onto the landscape, previewing views from parks, etc.).

My big project this month is getting my office in order so I can go back to sewing and work through my mending pile. I have 13 items that need to be mended (not all clothes), and it's driving me crazy.

I'm also working on hand-stitching my English Paper Piecing (EPP) project together after this year of cutting the fabric out, punching out the hexagons on cardstock, and gluing the fabric to the cardstock, it's now time to make the fabric (been working on it all summer) that I still have no idea what I want to make with the finished EPP. We'll cross that bridge when we get there, I guess.

I'm finally going to start putting together my family's recipes in a cookbook as well. I have plenty of online time where I can just type out the recipes we like and use regularly. I will need someone else to translate my great grandma's cookbook since it's hand-written in Russian, and while I can read printed Cyrillic, I cannot read cursive.

EDIT: I forgot, I also have an almost finished embroidery piece that I just need to get done. It needs like three more leaves and it's finished. I'm going to force myself to finish it, maybe this weekend.

I work for a retired furniture and cabinet maker who keeps telling me I can use the shop for any personal projects. Earlier this year I bought an antique tiger oak desk. My husband had the great idea that the television could go on it and I could use it as one of my monitors. I should not have listened, the tv is a monster. I’d like to make something in the same style as the desk, that sits on top of it, that the tv can be up and out of the way and the monitors under it. I don’t know what the name of that something is, just what I want it to look like. I don’t have much furniture making experience, but my boss is willing to show me how. I’m super excited for this project!

Most likely my project is going to be late because I’m currently in a different country until mid October, but I will show my work, however far I am, when show ands tell comes up.

I'm joining in. Got potentially two goals:

    1. JUST FREAKING WRITE AGAIN AND GET OUT OF THIS MENTAL WRITING RUT—

    2. Start doing the Godot classes I bought on Humble last year. Because I need to learn, and I also may be getting involved with a project for a friend.

...and also, avoid the temptation to just make some giant building project in Pokopia. That game is great for creativity (seriously some of the builds I've seen are WILD), but it's still a game. I want to make something more real.

To expand a bit on the writing goal: got a bunch of fan fiction I've been neglecting. And I may also just finally port an old fic (over 10 years old!!) from DeviantArt over to AO3, possibly clean it up. Meant to do it years ago, but... I made the plans right before my dad died, so yeah c': I may post a mild revamp alongside the port, since my writing skills have naturally grown a lot after 10+ years. Heck, tempted to just do a full rewrite as an original story, too.

So I plan on making an alarm clock for my wife, that will become her Christmas present. Her requirements for an alarm clock are:

    1. Not her phone
    2. Allows her to choose the music (she currently uses an alarm sound in her iPhone, so it is musical but not a song)
    3. Does not require an app on her phone to use

In researching, she realized the alarm clocks that match this criteria are more expensive than she would prefer. Using a Raspberry Pi, I think I can make one that easily meets her criteria. My goals for the month are:

    1. Source parts. I am wanting to find brass coloured buttons to match our nightstands, and aliexpress seems like my best option so far. The 7 segment display should not be too hard to get a good option
    2. Get the code set up. This should be a relatively easy Python script, so am not too concerned about it
    3. Get a working speaker setup
    4. Build the basic wooden box for it

I do not plan on doing the stain on the wood until after Christmas. I need to label the buttons, and am unsure how best to do that at the moment. So I am thinking of waiting until after I gift it to my wife, so that she can provide input in that part.
