What are you all drinking tonight?
It's summer, and it's time to relax. What is everyone drinking tonight?
I'll start:
I got sick and tired of drinking margaritas so I made a Paloma with the tequila I had around
2 oz of Tequila (blanco preferred)
1/2 oz Lime Juice
1/2 oz Grapefruit Juice
1/2 oz Simple Syrup
After mixing add all the ingredients into 1/2 a grapefruit soda.
I mixed the ingredients sans a soda and strained it into a highball glass then added the soda. Normally, I'd juice the lime myself, and garnish, but I'm lazy and my wife wanted a margarita instead. It's incredibly refreshing and citrus-y, but it is incredibly refreshing especially on a hot day.
What's everyone else drinking?
Water! Only water, slightly cooler than room temp. Nothing more refreshing.
Childhood:
"Soda is the cool adult drink!"
Teenage Years:
"Coffee is the adult drink."
Early Adulthood & College Years:
"Alcohol is the cool drink."
30s and onward:
"Water is definitely the best drink. I feel great."
As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate just how good being hydrated feels.
Same. No sugar, it’s good for you (and necessary), it’s cold, and it’s refreshing. Water is great.
Sparkling water can gtfo though.
I'm still in the 'early adulthood' stage, but for me alcohol and coffee are swapped. I used to drink way more between 16-20, now at 23 I barely drink once a month.
I didn't "get" coffee until last year, but now I'm pretty much a daily drinker. It helps me wake up, or it makes me believe I wake up faster from it. I don't even know at this point.
Yup I pulled a double at work yesterday so I was on the H2O train myself. Can't be drinking and managing people's crisies at the same time.
Non-Alcoholic Hazy IPA out of San Diego that’s just as good as the alcoholic version. I stopped drinking mostly late last year and because of the non-alcoholic options available to me I simply don’t have a craving to drink much anymore.
I've been drinking Athletic Brewing's hazy IPA, which is also NA, on the regular for a while now. I was very surprised at how good it is. I stopped drinking over a year ago due to meds and it's been great.
I didn’t know if I would come off sounding like an advertisement but Athletic Brewing has literally changed my life. It enabled me to stop drinking and not feel like I was “missing” anything. Still go to bars (that carry it) and hang out with friends in backyard bbqs and whatnot but without the guilt or hangover from actual alcohol. Plus it’s like a third of the calories. Total win win win in my book.
You might be well aware already, but I picked up Little Sumpthin's IPNA recently, and found it quite awesome and refreshing.
I actually really like IPAs generally, and their original one is quite hoppy, but the IPNA is a little different and imo much better
I'll be on the lookout for it, thanks for the rec
A bottle of cheap cabernet sauvignon. I'm a dev who's over 40, times have been rough, and this has become a regular thing for me at night. :(
I've been there, homie. Don't wait to take care of yourself. If I could change anything, I'd go back and ask for help a handful of years sooner than I did.
As an aside, I'm mostly California sober these days. 10/10, strongly recommend 🤙
Believe it or not, this is actually an improvement for me. I did a 6-month stint as a dev at Amazon and then spent the next seven months drunk all day every day. Fuck that place.
As it stands, I still can't have hard spirits in the apartment. A 750ml bottle of bourbon will last me exactly two very drunken days. At least with wine I've been able to shove my drinking into the late hours of the night (with a little bit of weed toking as well), and spend the rest of my time sober.
Alcoholism is a hell of a thing. I never understood it until Amazon practically destroyed me.
Yep, you don't realize (probably won't let yourself realize) that you're an alcoholic until you're already there. Looking back of course I can see all the warning signs, but at the time I really didn't realize I was an alcoholic until I ran out of excuses for missing work.
I'm also California sober (had to look it up haha), and can concur, life has been much brighter. I never thought I'd be able to quit alcohol and now I don't think I'll ever bother with it again (at least not for the foreseeable future).
I've been enjoying cannabis infused drinks lately. They're expensive but I only drink 1-2 and it's not an everyday thing.
California sober of 9 months here. Going very well so far!
I stopped drinking completely for a few years while I got my mind straightened out. After some time had passed and I'd made progress with my mental health, I revisited alcohol. I can say with complete confidence that alcohol is no longer a problem for me. I drink on occasion now, socially or just when I feel like a drink on a weekend or what have you.
Haven't quite figured out how edibles work for me; seems to take 5+ hours to feel anything, if I feel anything at all. I've gone to space on edibles once, and it was awesome lol. I'd love to do it again, just can't seem to get a consistent or even repeatable experience.
I mainly dry herb vape. Dynavap for portable use, Pinky ball vape at my desk.
Like yellow tail cheap or ghost pines cheap?
I hear you, and it's really painful to feel like you're drinking to manage a life that's too difficult otherwise. That's a start to a vicious cycle - alcohol to kill anxieties so you can sleep, poorer sleep and more anxieties from the alcohol...
I had a hard reality check on my drinking habits when I had to start a medication regimen that mixes poorly with heavy alcohol consumption. Cut back to three drinks a week (plus a bit of California sobriety) using a tracking app, and I'm enjoying both those glasses of wine and life in general a great deal more.
I just got some fresh cranberry lemonade (first I heard of it too) from my grocery and just added some vodka and it is excellent.
That sounds delicious. A Cape Cod is one of my go-tos if I happen to be ordering a drink; cranberry lemonade though... I'll investigate this further...
Just had some chocolate milk :P
I shouldn't really drink but I do enjoy Malibu with ice and condensed milk in the blender.
As you can see, I'm not at all sophisticated.
Chocolate milk is very sophisticated what
You should test for sommelier!
"I detect hints of old world chocolate mixed with notes of vanilla and honey. Good consistency with a very subtle aftertaste that lingers on the palate."
Show me where to apply and I'll do it!
A crappy bottle of free wine I got at a marketing event yesterday. I have a straw that fits the bottle, so that's fun.
It ain't crappy if it's free!
It's winter here in Australia, and I'm having a nip of Starward Two-Fold whisky to celebrate passing my PhD thesis examination! Any other Aus whisky fans here? I'm new to it and could do with some local recommendations.
Not a whisky fan, but came to say congratulations Doctor!!
Why, I'm drinking a hot, mulled, cider.
It's winter here in Australia ;)
Mulled cider is absolutely the best during the height of winter! Go you!
Diet coke! Parent life is so much fun!
If I was able to be less responsible, I'd take some Tanqueray and Sprite.
Parent life is hard because you are trying to do it right. You've got this. I also love diet coke.
I had dinner at a place and got something called “The Baker” which was rye, aperol, grapefruit & honey. It was delicious. Very heavy on the grapefruit so it felt healthy 😅
There are many fruit juices in the world but grapefruit juice is actually the best one ime. Heavenly.
Grapefruit juice is great but it also fucks with a whole bunch of medication.
I am pretty sure certain anti-depressives and birth control is also affected.
Just something to be aware of.
fwiw grapefruit juice isn't likely to affect the effectiveness of birth control -- it can lead to increased estrogen in the blood and thus more side effects like tender breasts, but that shouldn't make the birth control less effective (as opposed to something like St John's Wort, which definitely can make birth control less effective because it causes an increase in a substance that breaks down estrogen). (Source)
It can definitely affect some antidepressants, but I've had trouble finding a comprehensive list of everything it can affect. Theres a set list it definitely effects (which is included in your link iirc) but I've also seen sertraline mentioned. I saw one article mention SSRIs offhandedly but nothing else references them as a potential issue, and this article even says grapefruit juice is safe with most antidepressants (aside from that same set list). So it's a little fuzzier to come to a conclusion there.
I know from a friend of mine that it affected their lithium intake. After they stopped drinking grapefruit every morning they had to reduce their dose.
oh wow that's intense. I don't really like grapefruit juice so luckily I haven't had to dig into whether it messes with anything I take.
I've been making Cardboard Airplanes: Bourbon, Amaro, Cointreau, grapefruit juice, lemon juice. So refreshing.
Horny Toad and Sapporo. They're both super refreshing, and today the heat index was 100F
An adventure to American brandy:
I decided to try something new tonight. I have a €1,000 shipment of scotch whisky on the way (I don't have a drinking problem and I certainly don't condone the drinking of alcohol) and in the meantime, was given a near empty bottle of E&J Grand Blue VSOP Superior Reserve Brandy.
I tried cognac (a type of brandy from the region of Cognac, France), and found the spirit to taste like rubber, phenolic-forward, and candied ash. It was one of the worst experiences I have ever had save grappa (it was a gag gift given at Christmas and gag I did when it went down). I expected the same when I popped the cork on the brandy this evening. I was shocked to find the brandy I had today was a pleasure. Notes of toasted marshmallow, white chocolate, nougat, cola, vanilla cream, maple, sherry. Palate and finish detailing Vanilla syrup, candy, sweetened fruit, thicker, maple, sherry, candied fruits, and a lingering tingling sensation. I found the spirit to be smooth and enjoyable. This is a spirit I would have for dessert or as a wonderful nightcap given the sweet fruity notes. I decided to take some time to research into the company and about fell out of my chair when I saw the price of the brandy at €15 a bottle and distilled in the USA. Down the rabbit hole I went. Researching about the differences and delicacies between Brandy, Cognac, and Armagnac. What an interesting tale to tell and I am glad to learn/be interested in brandy rather than scotch whisky in general. I am going to be looking for an XO or VSOP bottle of some form or another of brandy the next time I place and order for spirits. Cheers, to those who got this far in the read!
Side rant about Scotch whisky:
I was not expecting such a great experience from brandy, but it leaves me considering an adventure into brandy rather than spending my hard-earned coin on scotch whisky. The shipment incoming may very well be my last from Scotland, but I can't say I will miss it (I have had a wonderful time with scotch whisky by trying over 150 bottles and visiting dozens of distilleries in Scotland. I love the country but have found it increasingly difficult to visit with current global economic constraints). The price tag seems to just keep climbing and the scotch whisky I used to come to enjoy is lessened as of late due to the incongruent price tag.
Review:
E&J's Grand Blue VSOP Superior Reserve Brandy: 77/100
Owner: E&J Distilleries
Region: Modesto, California, USA
Nose: Toasted marshmallow, white chocolate, nougat, cola, vanilla cream, maple, sherry
Palate: Vanilla syrup, candy, sweetened fruit, thicker, maple, sherry
Finish: Fresh cola, tingling sensation, sherry, licorice, candy, candied fruits
Note: Aged at a minimum of 2 years in oak casks, 40% ABV, NAS, maybe a wee drop of e150a caramel added for color, a beverage I would drink for dessert
Grading:
98 – 100 (A+) = Booze Nirvana
This is the promised land where every sense is satisfied and, unless it’s a perfect 100, you have to search and nit-pick for what’s wrong instead of what’s right about this whiskey because it’s so on point.
93 – 97 (A) = Exceptional – Superior in every way
These are the best of the best and within spitting distance of Nirvana. They embody everything that category is about and then elevate it to another level. These are ones I HIGHLY recommend.
90 – 92 (A-) = Excellent – want to buy a case
Whiskeys that hit this rating are extra awesome. They’re delicious and complex Daily Drinkers and even though they are not quite best-in-class, they’re among my favorite whiskeys and I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone at any time.
87 – 89 (B+) = Great – always want to have a bottle
These are whiskeys that as soon as you taste them you say “I want to own a bottle” and if you already own the bottle you just smile because it’s yours. It’s not a record breaker by any means, just a good solid delicious whiskey.
83 – 86 (B) = Good – not a “must”, but a nice-to-have
The majority of my baselines are found here. This range is where the “daily drinker” status starts to emerge and where I find whiskies that’re good to drink but may rotate in and out of my collection. They’re not something you’d miss when it’s out, but good enough to give a moment’s consideration when at the liquor store.
80 – 82 (B-) = Not-too-bad – no major flaws, worth tasting
This is the stuff I’d recommend you try at the bar or at a friend’s house before buying a bottle. There’s nothing really wrong with it, it’s just not… quite… there.
77 – 79 (C+) = Average – not good, not bad, just is
There might be some minor flaws, all-in-all it’s not offensive, but it might be boring. There’s just nothing at all noteworthy about this whiskey. Would recommend to starters.
73 – 76 (C) = Below average – drinkable, but better as a mixer / party booze
It’s not like you or I actually WANT to drink this stuff, but sometimes you’re at a wedding or a shitty bar and it just happens to be there and a beer just doesn’t sound great so you grin and bear a glass or, when possible, ask for it in a cocktail. If the bartender sucks you might even take a bit of solace in the knowledge that they didn’t ruin a good whiskey with their terrible cocktail.
70 – 72 (C-) = Not good – nearly undrinkable, wonder why the hell they made it
When I drink this stuff I wonder if the Master Distiller is actually proud of what they’ve put out or if it’s something they just shove out to make a quick buck. I then wonder about the person who habitually buy it and wonder what admirable qualities they find in it that I can’t.
60 – 69 (D) = The only thing this should be used for is making Jungle Juice, and even then, Seriously, I start to wonder if it’s even safe for human consumption at this point. It’s just plain vile.
59 – 0 (F) = Horrifically flawed – the worst
This is when I call the FFA/FDA because I’m pretty damn sure it’s not safe to drink this swill.
I love this post. We should do something like this every weekend.
THC seltzer! I'm finding it a lot more enjoyable than being drunk on alcohol, and the high you get is a more pleasant slow roll as compared to an edible gummy of the same strength.
I had a Dwarves of Doom chocolate coffee stout from a local microbrew. It was pretty damn tasty.
I had a few Vanilla Bitch Slap last night and that's probably the best beer I've ever had.
I find I can never get enough chocolate coffee stouts. Perfect for winter. I just wish there were more in the country I'm in as there's only one bar that seeks them out and they're decently expensive.
Everything is a gross IPA. I swear, people just say they like them because they're popular.
Definitely not enough "Darkness" out there. Porters/stouts and browns
Weihenstephaner Original Premium and New Belgium Trippel Ale.
Both are part of my one-two punch to escape from IPAs, which I've drank almost exclusively for most of my prime beer-drinking years. I'm an old man now and IPAs give me a tummy-ache, so I've been looking for lighter offerings.
Weihenstephaner Original Premium is a tasty lager; I could never stand American Adjunct "dad beers", but I've decided not to throw the baby out with the bathwater and find lagers that I can genuinely enjoy—this has turned out to be one of them. Light, clean, and refreshing! It's been 90+ degrees where I live, and this has been a good summer drink.
New Belgium Trippel Ale is good and solid. I picked up a bottle of La Fin du Monde a few weeks ago and was totally blown away by it—complex, delightful flavor and sneaky 9% ABV, maybe the best beer I've ever had, actually—and have been on a Belgian kick since. Loved Orval Trappist Ale and Westmalle Dubbel. I picked up a six-pack of New Belgium Trippel in search of a more economical Belgian-style Ale, and it seems perfectly serviceable in that role. I'll probably pick these up for parties when I can't afford to burn through all the good stuff in one night.
Oh I'm jealous. Maudite from the makers of Le Fin Du Monde is also exceptional. Troegs brewery out of PA does some similar styles with their Troegenator (not sure on the spelling) and, around Christmas, their Mad Elf.
Maudite sounds delicious, I'd try anything from Unibroue after La Fin du Monde. I'll keep an eye out for Troegs too, their ales look right up my alley. Thank you for the recommendations!
I'm a big tripel person! La FIN du Monde is wonderful and it ages well. I recommend putting a couple in your desk for a year or two and tasting next to a fresh bottle. I don't normally do that, but it's a fun experiment :).
I personally prefer Unibroue's other tripel, Don De Dieu. My other favorites are probably Westmalle Tripel and Brouwerij Van Steenberge's Tripel Van De Garre.
Oh, good idea! Next time I have some money in the bank, I'll grab a couple bottles of La Fin du Monde and put them away for a year or two.
I'm totally in love with trippels, they've been great at helping me wean off IPAs. I still get all the features I love in a good, strong ale, but with delightfully complex flavors that don't hurt my stomach.
Don De Dieu sounds delicious! I already love Westmalle, I tried the Dubbel instead of the Trippel so I could get a taste for the difference, but I'll absolutely be trying the Trippel soon. I'll also keep an eye out for the Tripel Van De Garre! I've got all these on my list now, thank you for the recommendations!
Me and my RC Cola
Dang, I bet you had a great night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOzLqXLxwjg
Ha, thanks for reminding me of that (I'm the dude in the Red Wings shirt). We had a blast making that video.
Ah ok, LOL, that was funny, I loved the RC bong shot!
So much sparkling water (primarily la croix). I drink alcohol when it seems especially relevant anymore but I’ve developed a real habit for cans of sparkling water.
I had blackberry aldi brand sparkling with 1.5 oz rum. I prefer it with vodka but am out and too lazy to go to the store.
But mostly drink it sans alcohol. It's so refreshing and I love how there is no sweeteners.
Drinking Svijanský Baron. Bought a case yesterday, it's relatively cheap but good beer, which is no surprise. Czech beer is really good overall.
I used to not like grapefruit, but it’s indeed refreshing and not as sweet as far as mixers go.
I work nights, so I’m having a triple shot latte at the moment. Might fix myself a gin and tonic in the morning after I get off. :)
Made a riff on the sunflower, subbing lime juice for lemon (as that's all I had):
Not bad; however, honestly would prefer lemon with this.
Also drinking a mix of cheap whiskey and iced coffee, as well as blackstrap rum and banana liqueur.
33 Acres' Fluffy Cloud IPA (33B-EXP.003.MkVI) -- nothing crazy. Its crisp, a little funky, a little tropical.
Here in Seattle, Black Raven Brewing Co. pale ale and then probably switching to Rainier beer.
Saturday afternoon here, the wife and I polished off a post-lunch bottle of New Zealand pinot Noir rosé. Nice and dry.
Had some spiced mulled wine with a slice of clementine, warmed me right up. Days like this, winter isn't so bad.
My go-to Old Fashioned:
Stir well and serve with a large whiskey cube, if possible.
I've got a glass of a terrific local Pinot Noir rosé lined up for this evening, to be served with a tomato couscous and grilled shrimp recipe. It's from a winery I worked at for a couple of summers, so I got it cheap. The bottles from that vintage were voted best in the state in multiple competitions, and it beats anything out of France, IMHO. Life emphatically does not suck.
I'm a believer in keeping things local where I can - French wines may be much better in France. Though shipping technology has improved, I've tasted around enough to know that long travel doesn't do wine any favors, not to mention the carbon costs.
Hot weather and a lot of grilling.
I prefer a really light, crisp low alcohol beer like Red Stripe or PBR.
Cocktails lean to agave and rums:
Surfer on Acid: equal parts
coconut rum
Jaegermeister
pineapple juice
Tia Mia:
1 oz mezcal
1 oz Jamaican rum
1/2 oz orange curacao
1/2 oz orgeat
3/4 oz lime juice
garnish: mint sprig, lime wheel
Jungle Bird:
1 1/2 oz blackstrap rum
3/4 oz Campari
1 1/2 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz demerara syrup
A couple of Dos Equis and Modelos!
If you like bloody marys you ought to pour some of your preferred mix into one of those beers. Yummy stuff.
An 1800 Silver tequila sunrise paired with a fatass J. Happy Saturday everyone
Been fond of whiskey, coke, and a splash of grenadine lately. Been nice to just sip on. Also love me some Kirin.
Bad Cat tuak! Glutinous rice wine which is very sweet and dangerously palatable
That sounds familiar. I was in Malaysia visiting relatives and they had this drink that sounded similar in name. Back then I was too young to drink so sadly, but appropriately, I didn't have any. Do you know much about the drink?
Picked up a bottle of Bushmills Black. I'm a fan of Jameson Black Barrel and heard this one was even better. It definitely stacks up!
Spent yesterday evening sipping some Ælred Melonade, neat. It's dangerously drinkable. If you can get your hands on some, don't hesitate!
Coffee, vichy-water, maybe a redbull if I get too tired before I'm done with todays to-do list.
Was thinking of sipping on some Templeton Rye 4 year, but decided to go for the much more expensive Avion Reserva 44. It's a tequila kind of a day.
For a nice warm day, either a Belgium white beer or a German Weizen goes quite nicely. Although both are wheat beers they have a distinctly different flavor profile. Both go very well with warm weather though.
If I am not looking for something with alcohol, I'll probably go for a ginger beer.
I'm a big fan of bloody marys.
During the summer I do like red beers/bloody beers. I usually make it with a corona and then bloody mary mix to taste. It's refreshing. Cheers!
Currently a mug of rooibos tea but had some nice whiskies at a friend's place earlier, among them a 30-something year old Miltonduff and a wine cask Ledaig
A bottle of wine from a local winery, Bull Run's Delaney. It went well with dinner last night after a rough day. I look forward to finishing it this weekend.
I'm in the Caribbean stocking up for a boat trip. It's going to be a week of all variations of rum, juice, and cream of coconut.
I'm going to dinner in a few minutes with my classmates and my teachers, then we'll be going out to club so I can only assume it's going to be sangria, sangria, sangria, a bit more sangria, a whole variety of weird shots, definitely some vodka. You know, just the usual 18-year-old-going-out-with-his-mates stuff.
Cognac on the rocks. Nothing better.
Last night but,
15ml rum
30ml tequila
5-10ml banana liqueur
mixed with some ginger ale
Wanted some rum on ice, only had 15ml left. Needed a main spirit to fill out the rest, felt like tequila would be a sympathetic mix with rum. Was listening to a podcast that used banana liqueur in something else (rum runner). Ginger ale always works to balance those out with some sweetness.
Was pretty good, I wouldn't mind developing it further.
Having some Strawberry & Cream Baileys tonight and a lovely old Rum.
I just finished half of a mint chocolate chip milkshake from Cook-Out and now am drinking done chamomile tea to wind down before bed.
I just made myself a Moscow mule! Recently found ginger beer that I really like at the local grocery store, so I've been making more lately.
Cucumber iced tea.
I might spike it with some spirits later on.
So this post is about last night (Saturday) I was out with a couple of friends, we drank lager and cheap shots 😃
Had a bunch of low ABV drinks by the pool (namely bud light lime), and then some fancy strong boy IPAs to round off the night. Need to remember to hydrate more though, not used to the high temps yet.
Black unsweetened iced tea, lime flavored sparkling water, and regular cold water (not all at once
