    1. What are the best cover songs that reinterpret the original into a different genre, style, or mood?

Inspiration came when I was listening to Busy Signal - One More Night, a half-cover of the Phil Collins original. Reggae and dancehall have a lot of examples like this but it's usually interpolating or covering the chorus rather than the entire song.

So, which do you know? If you could post links for both the cover and the original, that'd be ace. I'd say sampling in hip-hop usually doesn't qualify here, unless there's clear conceptual connection to the original song beyond just the beat.

Also, if anyone suggests the Chet Faker version of No Diggity, I will start a riot in here.

Hey I would love some new recommendations. I love all kinds of music without words, weather that be classical, ambient, postrock, whatever. (I also love music that has lyrics too :) But sometimes I just enjoy listening to instrumental tracks).

Are there any favorites you'd be willing to share? Right now I am listening to Brian Eno. Thanks in advance.

Hi folks. I am searching for songs that, for lack of a better word, build up via "layers" as the song progresses. For example, Beethoven's 7th Symphony, Second Movement, The Boxer Rebellion's "Soviets", or Dave Matthew's Band's "Dancing Nancies". Do you have any recommendations? Perhaps a musician would be able to tell me what this type of music/structure is called?

EDIT: Thank you so much to everyone who responded. There are some GREAT suggestions! I have a lot of listening to do!

I sense some folks are chomping at the bit so let's get this party started.

Think of this thread as a gigantic pile of records. This is our pile - there are many like it, but this one is ours. Don't waste a second worrying about what anyone else thinks. Got a record, even an EP that you've been spinning since it dropped? Find some random album from a /mu/ sharethread that blew your hair back? Throw it on the pile. Tracks for the stacks, just keep dropping them in the comments. If it's enough for you to spin repeatedly or to buy, it's worth sharing.

Stick to one comment per album, so that each album can be voted on individually. All we need is the artist and album name, brief/generalized genre tag (folk, metal, rock, indie, etc) and a listening link. Oh, and just a short sentence-to-paragraph size plug telling us what you're digging so much about the record. No need to go all war-and-peace on it, listening is always better than reading. ;)

Don't forget to name a favorite track (or two, three) from the record so the rest of us can easily dip a toe in.

No singles as top level comments. I'll leave a special comment below (mark it as joke/noise to keep it at the bottom) and you can drop your singles in there. The circumstances around covid-19 have lead to an absolute glut of singles coming out this year, even from artists who don't usually bother. I have a hunch it's worth keeping track of this year.

What we need here is albums, ears, and votes. We've got two months until the next thread, these things are best done slow so people can fit the listening time with their schedules. Dust off your favorite listening nook and make a date with some excellent albums, you might even feel better. :)

Bookmark this post if you plan to keep tossing albums in over the next two months. Also bookmark it if you want to comment and vote on the albums, find the best. We need all the ears we can get, and there is no such thing as layman opinions in music - you know what you like and that's all you should think about when voting.

Ignore it if you don't, because this thing is going to bump a lot as it builds.

If the album is on Bandcamp then that's the preferred stream source. If it isn't, then go with whatever streaming link floats your boat. You'll find most albums are on youtube (as playlists) this year due to their progress replacing google play music with youtube music. Hardly ideal listening with all the ads, but it is the most accessible to people who aren't paying for streaming services.

Right now this is more about building the library than it is about voting and vetting on the posts. We'll have another thread for that during the first week of December, and to collect late releases. The goal is to get the final set up as nice easy-to-consume playlists on most streaming services, and that's a job for late December, not right now.

When voting - upvote if you dig it, simple as that. If after listening, you think it's epic as hell and should be at the top of the list (a must-listen pick) then hit it with your exemplary token and thank the folks who brought you all the shiny gems to brighten up this wreck of a year.

2020 releases only, of course. Some albums may have been released in 2019, then pulled down and re-released in 2020. Those are just fine too since we didn't do one last year. Generally best to err on the side of inclusion.

What is a classical music piece you enjoy and what do you like about it? Maybe we can help each other find new classical music or even different styles of classical music to listen to. I like classical music a lot but I'm far from well versed in the different periods or much more than the most famous composers and performers.

One (far from obscure) piece I like a lot is Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1. It is full of explosive energy and the diversity and emotion of the violin part always amazes me.

And bonus question: how do you listen to classical music? I primarily listen to the local classical music radio station but occasionally attend concerts.

I'm looking for weird or obscure music that few folks have given a listen. To keep things interesting, I'll try and post stuff I've stumbled upon and liked rather than cruising newly uploaded stuff. The 20K plays limit is a soft limit and is not cumulative, so just check the numbers one platform like Spotify, YouTube Music or whatever. If it's obscure on one platform, it's probably, though not necessarily, obscure elsewhere too. I'll just be using YT Music numbers.

      • Depois do Escuro - Kalouv at 377 views. Brazilian post-rock band. Not well known at least in my music circles. This song just slaps hard. It deserves more attention.

      • The Search - Dougie MacLean at 8.9K views. Scottish folk artist. Some of his stuff is much better known: one of his tracks for the inspiration for the Last of the Mohicans theme). This whole album was made the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition and is much better than it has any right to be for a tourist attraction.

      • Sólin Mun Skína - Rökkurró at 9.3K views. Icelandic pop and rock band. I like the lead vocal artist a lot. Edit: Their VEVO channel puts this one at 41K views, so it breaks my rules a bit. Oh well.

      • Modulus - Marcus Fjellström at 733 views. Swedish composer and artist who did mostly moody and surreal dreamscapes and ambient music. Sadly he passed away in 2017 after composing the score for the tv show The Terror (one of the few excellent survival horror shows). Not really "easy listening" but I'm really impressed with his work and wanted to share it.

      • Misery Needs Company - Lovedrug at 2.1K views. Indie/alt band. Great song. Simple as that.

      • The Lunar Effect - Kebu at 19K views. Kebu, a Finnish keyboardist and composer, does lots of old-school synth and electronic work like you'd find in the tradition of Jean Michel Jarre. Edit: The live performance of this song has like 300K views... so I really shouldn't include it here.

      • Summoning Lesser Demons - Ivar Tryti at 10.1K views. Ivar is a regular on the synthesizer discord which is how I found his stuff. He's a wizard with Elektron synths/samplers and gear so I keep up with his releases.

If you're having trouble finding stuff <20K (I know I did when searching my history!) then increase the threshold to say 100K. If anybody has a good way to find rarer stuff, ideas are welcome. :)

They had a really chill, jazz-y, very Jamiroquai-esque sound that I dig the hell out of but now Levine's dedicated to pop music full time.

To limit the scope somewhat, only videos where the visual is AI generated are included (so AI generated music isn't necessarily included). Please also keep each video in a separate comment so they can be voted on individually. Maybe by the end we will have a kind of Tildes best-of list.

Feel free to talk about each video in their replies or talk about general stuff here. This will be a work-in-progress so stuff may be a bit all over the place. Let me know if you have any suggestion.

This thread will likely be very spammy so please use the IGNORE button. On the other hand, if you think you may want to contribute some of your own finds in future dates, you can also 'Bookmark' (Fun fact: you can use both at the same time).

I also tend to by vinyl records of albums that I have been listening to a lot so that I can help the musician/band. My love for progmetal, djent, and related genres has recently been rekindled by an appreciation of the depth, complexity, and even runtimes of progmetal pieces in a world where most music made today (more generally) consists of relatively simple 1.5 minutes long tracks.

I'm out of the loop. I've kept up with Periphery over the years (listened to them in highschool) and not much else. I recently saw Animals as Leaders, Devin Townsend, and Dream Theater live and had a good time.

      Bands I've been listening to:

      • Periphery
      • Erra
      • Animals as Leaders
      • TesseracT
      • Devin Townsend

What else should I be listening to? What should I know about progmetal; both historically and today? What shows have you been to, which were your favorite? Just a general thread about a genre I've rediscovered.

To turn your sick soul inside out - so that the world, so that the world can watch you die

Song infoGil Scott-Heron - Home Is Where the Hatred Is

Coincidentally, not all those songs are necessarily at the top of my recommends, but they are the first memorable one-liners that came to mind. I won't mind if your picks aren't the greatest songs of all time either if the line still hits.

Doesn't necessarily have to be war, could be a fist fight, music for killing demons, etc. Anything that makes you feel like a badass. It's cheesy as hell but Hells Bells by AC/DC has gotta be top...

Spotify recently increased their price, making it the same price as Apple's service. I've had Spotify since 2016 (started with the free version), and got premium in 2018 when they had the college student deal where you would get that and Hulu for only five bucks a month. I've been an off and on Premium subscriber since 2019. Only re-subscribing to it when Spotify would send me offers to sign up for three months for the price of one. This is actually the first year that I've consistently had Spotify all year since I was in college.

But now that they're the same price I was wondering if I should switch over. I don't want to get into the whole quality thing and lossless (I don't even know what that is) but I haven't been happy with Spotify's algorithm for a while. Streaming services have always been how I discovered new music, going back to me using Pandora while I was in high school. But now Spotify keeps suggesting the same songs whenever it's on smart shuffle. For example, if I play a song from the late 60s or early 70s, I know the next song Spotify plays is going to be Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Whenever I play an indie pop song, like a Lana Del Rey song or something, I know that the next song is going to be Borderline by Tame Impala.

I'm kind of sick of it at this point, and I feel like it's limiting the scope of what I'm listening to. I'm not sure what Apple Music's algorithm is like, I've heard mixed things with some saying it's better than Spotify and others saying it's worse.

I'm also happy taking recommendations on other things to do or try with Spotify to correct this.
