So, I'm looking for a platform where I can dump my ramblings basically xD. I mostly don't want a "free" platform funded by advertisements. Everything else (e.g. built on FOSS, federated) is a plus. Let's not make the perfect the enemy of the good.
Thanks =)

In my comment on this thread, I briefly explained my grievances with modern minecraft updates, and said that my long-term world was on version 1.1 from 2012. Since then, I reset my computer and accidentally nuked that world along with the rest of the data I didn't care about. After a long while of kicking myself over having no backup (a problem I have since remedied, thanks for the backblaze suggestion @greg!), it's time to suck it up and start a new world. The only problem is that I don't know what version of the game to start the world on.
Obviously, I can update it later if I really want to, but I found myself loving the simplicity of 1.1 (one wood type, small but epic worldgen, simple biomes, etc.) and missing the comforts of later versions (crafting shortcuts, detailed settings, controller support for my steam deck through the likes of midnightcontrols or controllable). With this in mind, if you're partial to a particular update and it's feature set, pitch it here! I know this sounds weird, but I want to hear about why you like the version of minecraft you play, maybe there's perks of newer versions that I haven't thought/heard of.
EDIT: for anyone returning to this thread, I landed on version 1.12.2 for a two main reasons:
-
It has good server & client performance (compared to 1.13 and 1.14, which are notoriously poor), meaning I can run a singleplayer server for cheap (paper, ~$3/mo for 1gb ram, runs basically perfectly) and have parity between my steam deck and PC. Steam deck basically sips power while playing, which is nice.
-
It's about the time that I stopped paying attention to updates. Anything past the aquatic update is a blur, so I can enjoy the simplicity while still getting some good qol features.

Could be a hobby, could be a new habit.
This year I started using a water flosser! My dental hygiene isn't the greatest and I could count on one hand how many times I flossed in a year, but I read a post saying how someone uses their handheld one in the shower and, yeah, that absolutely clicked for me!
I feel like I have weird sensory issues with using it over the bathroom sink. But in the shower, everything is already wet anyways. I can't believe it's a habit I've been able to keep up for more than half a year now with ease. It's something that I look forward to doing every time I shower. I've even started flossing with regular floss more now because I no longer bleed or feel gross. (I prefloss with the water one first.) Really happy.
I wish I could maintain more habits like that.
I also bought a standing desk and I really love standing and working now, too.

I might be a little early in posting this thread but I am personally beginning to stress a lot about the holidays - have been for like a month, even, to some degree.
So I wanted to make this thread as a safe venting space.
My own vent
I always disliked Christmas a lot, and New Year's Eve was even worse and is an active hate. But it's all so much worse this year because my brother (CSA TW) will be there. I have to pretend everything is fine even though it's not and I fear it will affect me so much so that I'm going to relapse when I get home.
Is there anything specific about the holidays that might affect or trigger you?
How are you?
Feel very free to vent!

for me, the only good part of Trump winning the latest election is just that this is his final term. if America/the world can just white-knuckle it through 4 more years of trump then I feel like Trumpism/MAGA movement will die cause (call me crazy) but I don't see his base having that much enthusiasm or gusto for any other candidate. Trump seems unique in this unwavering supporting and loyalty-till-the-end regime he has created within the GOP with the help of Faux News.
I figure 4 more years of insanity, then America's boogeyman will recede into the limelight and maybe it'll force the Democrat Party to campaign on policies that will actually help the American people rather than "we are not a fascist like trump".
but I saw some headlines where Steve Bannon was talking about how to allow Trump to run again and I am not sure if that's just bluster from the MAGA movement as usual or there is a legit chance they'd find a way to strike down the 2 term limit for presidents?

I find myself very bored at work. I have nothing on my plate to do, and I have exhausted everything I can think of doing on my phone. Browsing Tildes, and a little reddit though I hate Reddit now, making spreadsheets on Google drive for hobbies, catching up on any news, playing a dumb phone game, watching YouTube (though this is much harder and I can only do something audio based when I sneak away to a private corner which I can only do for limited amounts of time), browsing LinkedIn for other jobs/career path.
I'm at a loss for what else to do. I'm at the point where I have many hours in my day with nothing to do, and boss doesn't care I'm on my phone as long as my shit is done, which it is.
Obviously can't do much video watching or actual video game playing or anything requiring audio.
Also phone games have to be vertical so it isn't obvious I'm playing a game if a client walks in. Any suggestions?35 votes -

While I consider this resolved at time of posting, this is one of my weirder, more unexpected tech issues I've run into and I thought y'all might enjoy it.
I'd been having issues with my (Ubuntu) server where its services were unavailable, I couldn't SSH in, and USB devices plugged in after the issues started weren't connecting (mouse LED would light up, couldn't toggle keyboard locks or interface computer with the devices). These issues were becoming a near daily occurrence.
So after the most recent incident I decided to watch it boot. After grub, it would just hang at a black screen. So I opted for the recovery mode and after waiting some minutes for services to time out, I was given a terminal and used that to check my devices, sensors, etc and all were reading fine.
Frustrated, I started reviewing what else could have possibly changed with my setup, and I found that change in my hand. I use my server's front USBs as a low current charger and had recently got a new vape battery that was charging at that moment.
I unplugged the battery, rebooted, everything was fine. Plugged the battery in, everything locked up again immediately.
I had been using a spare cable, it had data wired. Swapping for the included power only cable, and no issues.
While I'm curious as to what exactly is happening and why, I'm satisfied enough concluding it is a cheap vape (I mean, I'm having to charge the sucker near daily after all) that is transmitting junk over data and the OS doesn't handle it appropriately. I'll pull logs or do another couple tests if other folks are curious as well though.
Oh, and the battery is a Bear Rootz Sol. Come to think of it, my other worst battery at holding a charge was also a Bear Rootz.

I've been having intermittent problems with selecting text. I'm not sure which software it is in, but it is certainly in Slack and IntelliJ. The text I select will often/sometimes not stay selected once I lift my finger up. It will take several times to make the selection last, sometimes swiping in a different direction.
Is it my mouse or the software?
My mouse in made by Inland, model RTM098( J10 ). Probably very old.
