I sucked up my pride and reduced the difficulty level.

Diablo 4 World Tier 2 was kicking my butt in certain key areas. I don't know if it's my build, my equipment, or my skill; whatever the case, I simply could not finish a certain Stronghold. I tried putting it off and coming back after a few levels, gearing up, changing skills, but regardless of what I did, I'd just keep dying at the boss. And it wasn't even close.

So, with a heavy, disappointed sigh, I set the World Tier level down to 1. After doing so, I beat the boss on my first try. And you know what? The feeling of self-loathing didn't stick around as long as I thought.

I think I've come to accept the fact that I'm probably not the young and spry gamer I once was. My hair is starting to grey, my fingers are starting to slow, and even my eyes are starting to dim. But I still love games, and if continuing to enjoy them as I keep aging means I have to start switching to easy mode once in a while, I think I'm okay with that. I'm proud of myself for not taking that realization too hard.

These days I generally play on Normal or sometimes Easy and I'm not ashamed to say it lol. I mostly play for the story and atmosphere anyways, and I could not care less about online trophies or achievements.

It really does. I recently committed to playing some games/genres i didn't really play like platformer (Dead Cells) and shooter(Hell Let Loose) and that showed me I didn't inherently suck at those genres, you just need a couple of dozen hours to not be a beginner and then probably another couple of hundred or more to get anywhere good. We humans get good at the skills we use rigth.

That is my new old man speed. Single player for the win. Those kids are just too damn fast and loud. Hehehe. But we all get old eventually.

You can still absolutely play competitive multiplayer even as your senses and reflexes dull over the years, you've just gotta adapt what you play.

For example, class-based shooters such as Team Fortress 2 are a lot more forgiving to the rigours of age than twitch shooters are because you can just adapt what classes and playstyles you use to your own personal strengths and weaknesses, TF2 in particular is balanced in a way that means effective teamwork and team strategy is going to pay off far more than a handful of really good players too which means even a mediocre player can still be a very important part of an effective team in the right situations. Pyro, Demoman, Heavy, Medic, Sniper, Spy and Engineer all have strategies that don't really require you to have great senses or fast reflexes to be effective and I'd even argue that some of them (eg. Medic, Engineer, Sniper) have traits that mean the benefits/drawbacks to aging in general provide more of a net benefit than a drawback as they would with the more fast-paced classes such as Scout. Plus, it's a Valve game in Source engine so if you're used to CS:S' UI, input handling, netcode, etc then TF2's is very similar if not the same.

Outside of shooters I've found slower paced strategy games are very fun too, the Civilization series being an obvious start point. The thrill I get when I plan out a strategy in the early game and manage to pull it off and win in the late-game is like nothing I've ever gotten from a shooter personally.

I've been playing a lot of no build Fortnite and a few other battle royales. There's more focus on resource management, and strategy, and in combat, movement and accuracy is more important than raw speed.

I recently beat ascension level three with the Silent in Slay the Spire. Perhaps not the most impressive achievement but it still felt good!

My highest ascension is four with Ironclad, but Silent has always felt trickier. This time I had a bunch of luck drafting a shiv deck. Kept it really small and focused. I think I finished the run with 18 cards in my deck. It honestly was a cake walk and almost felt undeserved.

Usually I try to go for a poison deck because I find that a lot more fun but it’s also harder to pull off.

Doesn't mean I try to do the exact same thing as well, though.

I do find it easier to have that approach with ironclad. I think it’s because I find all styles interesting with him, whereas with silent I don’t have as much fun than running something like shiv.

Slay the Spire is my absolute favourite game these days - congrats on the ascension! And yes, 100% echoing what the other commenter said - you'll have the best luck if you don't try for specific builds (poison etc), but just sort of roll with whatever direction your cards and relics lead to. In the longer run, you'll even mostly abandon the concept of "builds" or "archetypes" at all - on silent for example, I don't really make poison decks, or shiv decks, or discard decks, I just make decks and those decks have a mishmash of different cards in them that all do useful things.

The best way to get better at slay the spire, imo, is to really learn about your different upcoming enemies and prepare your deck for those. You're never building your decks in a vacuum - you're building them to win specific fights, and oftentimes cards that don't feel like they have great synergy with the rest of your deck are just the thing you need to take on some upcoming potential fight more safely. Take the champ, for instance (the act 2 boss). His main shtick is that he gets very angry two turns after you drop him below half health, and will start hitting extremely hard - so usually you want to stall out the first half of the fight until you can bring him down from ~50% health to 0 very quickly. That might mean grabbing some scaling cards you might otherwise overlook, like Demon Form in an ironclad deck that usually does a lot more quick burst damage, or a dark orb source in a defect deck that's otherwise more focused on frost. Knowing those upcoming match-ups, assessing how well your deck does against each, and drafting new cards to target their weaknesses is a huge game changer!

I love talking about StS, so feel free to ask any other questions if you like - happy to share whatever resources or insight I can. I'm certainly not the best player in the world, haha, but I do have a couple A20 heart kills under my belt, so that's gotta count for something :)

Like I get a lot of personal enjoyment from the challenge of climbing ascensions, but I also still have a ton of fun sometimes dropping back down to A1 and building some wacky little deck that never would have made it past act 1 on A20. If you're interested in climbing ascension in StS, something that helped me with that is watching a lot of Jorbs videos. He's a youtuber and streamer that plays StS at a high level and has a lot of insights in his Spire Chat videos. I don't think I'd have been able to get to ascension level 20 with Defect and Watcher without his advice (I'm still working my way up on Ironclad and Silent).

Here's a video where, like some of the other comments in this thread, he discusses why trying to build archetypes isn't all that useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vouas6s6rCk

If it's alright, I'll add mine, since it's what made me think of making the post in the first place : I picked osu! back up and managed to pass happppy song, my first 8-star difficulty pass. I also managed to pass a good handful of classic maps that I wasn't able to before, and a few that have been my personal demons for a while.

They're all very, very dirty passes, C/D ranks with 60-80% accuracy and pitiful max combos. But I've struggled trying to FC things to no avail and now, I realize I have a lot more fun playing for pass on really hard maps than trying to FC easier maps for pp, and I'm accepting it more. Plus, I'm on lazer anyway now. Proud!

That said, an 8 star difficulty is impressive. I couldn't do much better than a 5 star map, which was a shame cause all the really good maps were like 6+ stars. Maybe the mappings have changed in the 8 years since I've really played anything.

I absolutely LOVE that one it's like roleplaying Mario. I keep saying that to myself too "itsa me, Mario". Just makes me happy. Honestly, I think the hardest part of Dark Souls is just figuring what to do/where to go next. I always tell people not to feel bad about checking maps and guides. Even if you have some help in the beginning, there's still a massive replayability factor. Playing through all the Souls games was my Covid project and it was one of my most fulfilling gaming journeys.

I actually beat DS3 once (no DLC Or Nameless King), but in my next game I got stuck on the lion armor. I've never even played DS2 because I heard enemies will disappear if you farm them, and getting too many souls will ruin matchmaking (even if you die and lose them).

Ahh, fair enough. I don't think I ever had to farm an enemy enough times in DS2 to where it disappeared, I think it's a pretty darn long time. I also don't really do matchmaking, so I wasn't worried about that too much. My main issue with DS2 was that I'm not a fan of a lot of the midgame zones. But the last 3rd or so is incredible. And going with a Hexer build honestly made the game super easy.

Each year I revisit the website (now turned Steam game) 3D Aim Trainer, each year expecting myself to be unable to reach my previous peak due to my glory days being behind me. Yet each year I satiate my worries by setting a new record for global rank percentile, this year I managed to bring it up to Top 0.7%. Shame I'm not as enthralled in competitive FPS as I used to be, though that's debatably for better or for worse ;)

I'm getting older and I expect my skill and reaction time to have dropped whenever I hop into an FPS after a few months or a year of not playing, but I'm always surprised that I'm doing just as well or better than I have when I was in my 20's. If only I had the time to play competitively like I did when I was younger.

Managed to beat Final Fantasy 3

Since I have some time, I’ve been starting the FF series from the beginning and it’s going great.

I didn’t mind FF3, but I did find it, for some reason, more challenging than FF2 which I really enjoyed. I think the jobs in FF3 (afaik) aren’t fully explained and it takes a while to know which ones work really well at a given point in the story if you don’t look it up.

I can see how it is a product of it’s time in that regard and how it would great to explore.

Thanks! Yea I’m having a blast.

FF1 - very minimalist but has a lovely charm. Very simple game and can be completed relatively quickly. Like most first games in the franchise, Assassins Creed being a perfect example, it is just testing the waters with what players like and to set some foundations on what they can build upon. Pretty forgettable but this can be forgiven when you think of when it came out and technical limitations.

FF2 - for some reason, iirc, the Reddit final fantasy community voted this as their most disliked one (I have made this claim but I can’t back it up) maybe I’m mis remembering it but I did seem to pick up that is wasn’t so loved - I think the XP system maybe? Personally I really liked it. Again, it’s in its teething phase and is now trying to add a bit more story and see where it goes. I like how if you want to improve your health/defence you can just attack your party. If you want to improve your magic then just cast magic. There’s nothing stopping you from making everyone DPSs/Healers/Tanks - a very flexible play style!

FF3 - really fun! Think the story was a bit over the place but the levelling was fun and a very enjoyable experience. Did feel I had to grind a lot more but that may be because I just stuck with the ‘wrong’ jobs for most of the game. I can imagine the instruction manual in the original game would have detailed jobs to inform players.

FF4 - just picked it up (4 hours or so in) and loving it. The first game that really centralises us around a character and not the ‘4 brave warriors trope’. It gives me a reason to care about this person: they have a name, personality, morals, background, family and it’s really cool.

I’m fortunate to be playing these for the first time on the pixel remaster on Steam and think they all look absolutely beautiful. Im not sure how much they differ completely from the originals mechanically etc but it’s certainly an enjoyable experience!

I'm playing Elden Ring, still working on my first play through after owning it for over a year. I was struggling on Mohg, Lord of Blood and the Fire Giant. I came across a video of a "one hit build" for the weapon I'm using, the Giant Crusher. But it requires a lot of precisely time buffing and equipment swaps to do perfectly and I couldn't get out down. I'm also learning Python (currently in school for a masters in data science). So I wrote a simple script to do everything to proc the buffs. It's not actually a one hit but it's doing around 6,000 damage per hit. It took some trial and error. Using that I managed to beat both of them. Now I'm stuck in Crumbling Farum Azula but that's only because I can't figure out where to go, not that I can't beat a boss.

I'm sitting at 60/63 achievements, and I think one of those is choosing the other ending in the game, but the other two are White's heaven/hell rushes. Oh hey, I came here to say the same thing. I got my first red medal on the second chapter and then went back to get them all and got them as I went. I looked up what the times were after I did a few good runs just to make sure I wasn't missing a big shortcut, and only had to look up example red medals on two or three levels.

During that process I decided I wanted to 100% it so I ended up doing all of the hell rushes. I think going for the White Hell rush soured my experience with the game since ended on a low note as opposed to the high note of the all the red medals. It's just such a different way to play the game, plus it took me 4 or 5 attempts with each attempt taking ~45 minutes before failing. I really wish they had an achievement for red medals instead of the rush achievements though.

@DefaultWizard Congratulations on the static! I hope the tier goes well for you.

In reply to both of you, I'd describe myself as a fairly experienced raider in XIV on the Aether datacenter, and with Savage loot system and time obligations aside, I'm always down to play and help out so please feel free to reach out to me as well!

I guess in the spirit of the thread about latest gaming achievements, I could mention that I did manage to clear the first 3 fights of this tier in week 1 PF, but sort of lost steam with some of the downsides of playing in PF and didn't manage P12S yet.

Joined a static myself as well for a more consistent environment to finish and farm the tier. I wanted to PF this tier because playing whenever I feel like is so appealing, but the reality is that it can eat up a lot of time on inconsistent PF player behavior and may lead to burnout just as easily as having to play when it's scheduled play time, whether or not I feel like it.

Still, a fight per day in the first 3 days felt pretty good!

There are a couple neighborhoods I haven't 100%ed yet because 1 or 2 side-gigs haven't presented themselves yet.

Overall, I'm glad I waited until it was $30 but still not convinced it was worth $30. A little glitchy, janky controls and overall a pretty try-hard reboot.

It's actually been a couple months, but it's relatively recent since I've had the game for almost a decade--I finally beat Spelunky the hard way. Over the years I've frequently gone through spurts where I played the daily challenge almost every day, and I'd gotten pretty good at it, consistently earning $200,000 or so through the playthroughs where I didn't just die from doing something stupid. But it took a lot of trips to Olmec (I consistently struggled to get through the gate to Hell) and a lot of trips to Hell to finally get to and beat King Yama (according to Steam, my play time is over 500 hours).

I'm surprised that I suddenly have no desire to play the game. I feel like I've done everything I've wanted to in it, and even though it was a blast to play even when I failed, I have no motivation to play it. I don't care about the other achievements, so without a goal, I guess I'm done with it. I haven't liked Spelunky 2 nearly as much, and I'm not totally sure why, but hopefully I'll get into it someday.

There hasn't been much by the way of good multi-player in 2023 that I haven't already played to death or just gave up on due to lack of interest or my skills being lack luster. I started playing Quake LIVE as it was easy to play a few rounds in the evening on one of the few remaining servers that actually gets players.

After some 70 hours of playing FFA against a lot of ungodly good players, I've managed to win 4 games now in the past couple weeks. Quite proud I still got it somewhat. My railgun is quite insane for not playing in nearly 20 years, but sadly my rockets are not what they used to be... Anyways, that's what I've accomplished! Being good at games I was good at 20 years ago...

Beating dark souls 3. I've struggled with Lorian and lothric for at least half a year (although i didn't play the game for most of that time), but a few weeks ago i went back, adjusted my build and after a few tries i finally beat them. And then i was a bit surprised when the final boss fell on the second try. Especially since i only got his first phase to 50% hp on the first try.

Another one would be finishing all the Elden Ring steam achievements. Elden lord was the last one. I do have to admit that I haven't beaten eldenbeast solo yet. in all 3 of my playthroughs i had to summon someone to help, because it killed me relativley quickly everytime. Radagon wasn't really a problem most of the time.
