I've enjoyed reading the What game are you terrible at? topic, and it gave me the idea of making the question a bit more general.
Not "what are you bad at?" but what is something that's more difficult for you specifically. Like, I'm bad at a ton of different things, but that's because I don't put effort into them or never learned them or whatnot.
But there are certain things that I do that I find I have to put a lot more effort into to even be passable, while for other people it comes easy. That's the sort of thing I'm interested in hearing about.
- What's something that's tougher for you than it is for others?
- Why do you think that is?
- How does it impact you/others?

For most of the history of Tildes, if someone came across the site and decided they wanted to join, but didn't know anyone already on, they could email Deimos with an invite request. However, with the rise of LLMs, the noise-to-signal ratio has become so high this is no longer a way to join Tildes - explanation by Deimos: https://tildes.net/~tildes/1vl3/is_there_any_interest_in_building_a_tildes_successor#comment-if6r
I've read the recent discussions on Tildes being maintained as is and not actively grown, but I think most of us believe the community is up for many more years of enjoying each other's company, and would like to pick up a few more members along the way if they seek us out. That just requesting to join isn't possible anymore makes me a little sad.
I had the thought that larger sites are able to invest more resources into spam account filtering, many of us have active accounts on other social media sites (or other types of sites with community interactions), and I speculate that almost everyone who finds tildes and is interested in joining has already been active in some other online community. Some of us Tilderinos could post here our handles in other communities, and offer to consider sharing one of our invite requests to Tildes if DM'd in our other community. We'd have to reject requests from new accounts, and use some judgement on established ones, but I am thinking having people go through the filtering process those other communities use would reduce the spam requests enough to make it workable.
What do you guys think?

This is a tough question.
I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad or relive trauma, but I want to give people a space to talk about it and share their stories if they need to.
- Have you ever been outed by someone else/accident/circumstance?
- What happened?
- Who/what outed you?
- Why?
- How did it turn out?
Also, while some people will undoubtedly have serious answers to this, I also think there are some stories that are less grave and more lighthearted or positive. Those are fine to share too.

This thread got me thinking and reading about the solar eclipse next year. Here is the path. It seems like Luxor would be an ideal location, except for the likely huge crowds and the heat. Tarif, Spain or Tangiers, Morocco seems like the next most likely destination. The length of the totality is shorter, but both cities are fully in the totality, so we could likely see it from where we are staying. Another random thought would be taking a boat into the mediterranean north of Tunisia, but I don't know how practical that would be.
What recommendations, if any, do you have for this kind of travel? I am a complete travel noob, so open to all suggestions. This will be my and my wife's 20th anniversary, so it might be okay to splurge a little.

Planning a trip to Japan fall 2027 or spring 2028. Japan seems to be a place I can spend my entire life savings in, fill three warehouses, and still come away with want. So here's a different question than the usual: if I don't care about Instagram sightseeing or the latest fashion trends or Michelin star restaurants, what are some crazy cheap things to do or places to stay?
Old fahsioned and dingy is fine, anything above "downright dangerous" is completely okay. We could do one fancy pants Ryokan and one cheap one if the cultural difference in expenses are worthwhile, otherwise cheap cheap cheap please.
I am most interested in hands on traditional crafts making workshops or experiences, like touring wagashi kitchens, basket weaving, leather workers, fibre and paper arts, wood crafting, kintsugi pottery repairs etc.
Kaga Traditional Craft Village Yunokuni no Mori, Komatsu -- Ishikawa Prefecture : this has been recommended to me, would love reviews and other recommendations. Kyoto has a lot of English workshops: are there cheaper ones outside?
BOOK OFF chains and Mega Donki for cheap, used consumer goods? Osaka for used kimono? Where do people get rid of their unwanted traditional arts and art supplies? Kyoto has a bunch of flea markets: still good spot or tourist junk I can get for much less elsewhere?
Any arcades that take an entry fee and then it's all you can play? (Asking because I super suck at games but I love them, and Japan has the whackiest arcade games)
I'd be perfectly happy to eat konbini & ramen & gyudon & cheap foods for the entire time. What other kinds of food are cheap? (I'd also do one or two seafood meals for sure but spending money = easy to find reviews)
I want to hear all the cheap things about Japan :) my goal will be to (1) avoid the over tourism spots and be less of a nuisance for locals (2) experience things (3) save all the money for the end of the trip to see Akihabara, spend it all on gunpla, anime and gaming goods.....
Maybe worth mentioning I am trying to learn as much Japanese as possible in a year, with background in Chinese language and college first year level Japanese. Language tips also welcome.
Edit: other Japan tourism threads by gpl, rosco ,AugustusFerdinand and shared -- also excellent

The prices have increased, and even before people called it too expensive.
I am just wondering - do you have one? What do you use it for? I've been thinking of getting one (as a business expense, I guess the price is high, but then again - what other option do you have for compute? renting GPUs is quite expensive, any comparable amount of VRAM is very expensive - ok if you have space and mostly want to do inference, I guess you have better options (3090 or 5090)
For me, I have just been considering having some more compute available for robotics, finetuning, trying out selfhosted and fine tuned LLMs, among other things. My other setup (M1Pro 32GB and a 1070 Mini) could work for some stuff, but especially for the robotics part it's mostly about NVIDIA...
Curious about any experiences.

I'm asking "I" in the sense that I'd personally like an answer to this question, but really this is more about using VPNs in general.
Currently, I just use the server with the lowest latency because that gives me the least friction.
However, thinking about the GDPR in the EU, or California's data privacy protections: should I be strategically choosing a server based on those? Is there any benefit to having my traffic routed through a jurisdiction like that, or does that not really matter?
EDIT: To further clarify: will all the different websites out there log less data or treat my data differently if they believe my traffic is coming from the EU/California?

This is an unofficial Boost for Lemmy port.
With the Any significant changes to Tildes are extremely unlikely topic (and the Tildes successor one) from the other day about how this site was now in minimum maintenance mode, that gave me the motivation to finally look into porting Boost to work with Tildes. Knowing that the site won't change felt like a good time to "make" an app for it. For the longest time, the two mobile apps that I used for browsing Reddit were Reddit is Fun (which Tildes already has with Three Cheers thanks to @talklittle) and Boost. I've been using Three Cheers from the day that it came out. The original Boost creator (Rubén Mayayo) went to Lemmy instead of here and he created and maintains Boost for Lemmy. While Tildes isn't federated, it still has most of the features that Lemmy has, and it's also similar enough to Reddit. In the past few months, a project called Morphe has spawned to patch Android apps. A user on GitHub called Breal, has been maintaining Boost for Reddit by providing patches compatible with Morphe. He himself built his patches off the work from wchill though he's been mia for a few weeks. He's been fixing issues and backporting the new features that were implemented in the Lemmy app. That gave me the idea that something could be done for Tildes.
Anyway, I got a Claude subscription for the summer and I'm trying to test its limits. I've been a programmer for 16 years and it has been blowing my mind. The more I work with LLMs the more they feel like masochists (the techniques that they use to solve various problems are truly wild). Some projects that should usually take months or years can be done in only a few days through sheer brute forcing. I got a proof of concept done the other day to see if I could connect Boost for Lemmy to Tildes. It worked within only a few hours which was promising. It turns out that implementing this well though was a lot harder than I expected. It took some really heavy modding to keep it seamless. I really wanted it to feel like native Boost while still following Tildes' way of doing stuff. After a lot of trial and errors, here it is. I was able to maintain compatibility so that it can live alongside Lemmy. Boost's account switcher lets your easily switch between Lemmy and Tildes.
To install it:
- Download the Morphe Manager to your phone.
- Add my repo as a source URL in Morphe:
github.com/Apostolique/apos-morphe-patches - Select Boost and follow the instructions to patch.
- Install the patched Boost for Lemmy.
- In Boost for Lemmy, select tildes.net as your instance and connect to your account.
Here's to multiple more years of talking with you guys on Tildes.
Report any bugs that you find, or issues with my instructions.
