Tildes Book Club October Progress check in - How are you doing with Kindred?

I got over-excited and read this one a couple months ago. I really enjoyed it though, and think it'll be a good book for discussion. I'll not go into any specifics just yet, but it offered a unique perspective I'd not been able to experience myself before, and I think that helped me better understand it. I'd love to see more picks in that vein for Book Club.

I've read it some time ago. Without going into much detail, I think this book really helped me grasp (to the extent a white person can) the struggles people of colour were - and are - going through.
If you liked her writing, I highly recommend the Xenogenisis Series by her. Unlike Kindred its main focus is gender.
So, I love Xenogenesis but I'd argue that the main focus is actually colonization. It does have aliens and a 3rd sex/gender and all sorts of things, but the MC is a Black human woman that has issues with other humans for being both Black and a woman.
But its themes to me are colonization and consent. It's so good
Thank you for the recommendation! Even when it makes for tough reads, I do appreciate having more opportunities to learn about the kinds of challenges people have (and still do) face.
I read through some of the non-spoilered reviews on GoodReads, and a handful mentioned "some of the best written aliens in literature". Dang if that doesn't sell me on it, too. I love a well-written alien.
Sneaky Octavia, pulling me in with scifi just to hit me in the face with human realities.
I missed the last few since I was completed swamped at work. Things finally cleared up a bit so I finished this book last week. Some parts were tough to get through due to content, but I wanted to know what happened next so I pushed through it. Will be nice to be able to join the discussion this time.
Just started it yesterday and I'm already a quarter of the way through. It hooked me right away, which was really nice as a lot of the books I've been reading recently take some commitment to get started.
Same. I just started it but I can’t put it down, despite it being genuinely hard (emotionally) to read.
I'm about to start! I'm halfway through my current read, and then it's next on my list.
Oh thank god, I'm not the only one who's stuck in another book. Perhaps I should put down my current read and try and get through Kindred... I'm such a slow reader either way.
There is an excellent graphic novel adaptation(Amazon link). While I'm a big fan of Butler, I think the adaptation does the work justice and if you're not up for getting through the full novel as written it could be worth the try!
Oh man! I plan on reading the novel itself, but I can't resist a hard cover graphic novel for $11.89! Thank you for alerting me to the picture book option!
haha I read it last month accidentally! I thought it was really really good, and also a difficult reading experience, which is I think what Butler intended. 5/5 highly recommend
Listening to it right now, about halfway through. A hard but important read. Looking forward to the discussion.

I'm traveling for October and hope to join in for November's club. Perhaps I could make a late comment in early November if I speed read the book when I return home.
I listened to the audiobook a month or so ago, so now I'm doing my best to hold the details and my impressions in my memory until the discussion :)
I am behind as things have been a bit crazy in real life, but hoping to be able to read the book next week.
Sadly, it has been pretty hectic around here, so I couldn't really start. And I really have no idea if I will be able to start reading the book. But I am looking for the next book.
