My online habits are too limited by these three websites. What other aggregators, blogs or websites you suggest for me to open my horizons?
Some of my interests:
- Long-form film criticism (not movie news)
- History of American cinema
- Urban exploration (sewers, abandoned places, spooky stories)
- Python
- Learning techniques
- Transportation (subways and trains, mostly)
- True crime
- Science fiction literature (both new and old)
- Stand up comedy
- War history
I'm particularly uninterested by American or World News.
I currently am not listening to podcasts because my headphones break every week and I don’t have enough money to buy headphones that will last more than that.

Do you think a recession is likely within the next 15 years? If so, what/who will cause it and why?

I am not even remotely knowledgeable about economics and stocks so if any logic in this is flawed, please tell me why.
If it happens (which seems likely but not a given) I think the most likely offenders would probably be companies like Uber and WeWork because they kept going with their current practices (mainly unsustainable and sometimes still unprofitable) to the point where venture capitalists decide it's too risky an investment to make and the stocks eventually crash in these companies and the whole market soon follows.

Lots of games have special events or updates that change the game in some way for Halloween. Some of them are pretty impressive, so I wanted to make a thread where people could point out some of the best ones.
Have you seen any interesting updates/events in the games you're playing/watching?
Please make a separate top-level comment for each game/update so we can easily separate discussion about a particular game.

Discuss: namespace clashes expose and ensure instabilities in user-side solutions to interface problems.
Case in point -- the RemindMeBot, which will send a timed reminder message to anyone who calls it in a reddit comment with the phrase "RemindMe!", has been cloned and iterated upon by another bot, Kzreminderbot, which responds to the exact same trigger phrase. Both bots reply to the comment threads where they are summoned. Kzreminderbot has slightly more diverse features, including email/text notification, but the interesting thing here (I think) is the impotence of the response from the creator of RemindMeBot, who has added a link in their comment replies to send annoyed feedback to the second bot.
We talk occasionally about the scramble for usernames on new services, but this is an slightly novel example of the cascading hierarchies of website design. A feature which reddit lacked is added by a bot, but that bot is too provisional to cover the hole which it was meant to fill.

As an outsider some gaming communities can appear incredibly toxic. I'm sure some of that is a deserved reputation, but I'm also aware that maybe there's a bit of generalisation going on, and that some communities are lovely but unrecognised.
So I thought I'd ask Tildes: which gaming communities do you like? And why?
(As always, feel free to interpret this question how you like. And, again, I suck at tagging so I'm grateful for any tagging edits. I do read those to try to learn.)

Hello everyone,
As I've previously mentionned in a previous comment, I'm getting back into PC gaming after 3 years with a simple laptop. I would be grateful if you could share some recommendations! Here are a few details that I think can help you:
- Looking back, the genres I like the most are
- City-building games (Cities Skylines, SimCity 4, ...Rimworld?)
- Tactical shooters (Arma 3, Insurgency)
- First-person role-playing shooters (STALKER, Fallout 4)
- Atmospheric indie titles (INSIDE, Kentucky Route Zero, Night in the Woods, Oxenfree, What Remains of Edith Finch)
- I don't tend to like competitive multiplayer games, I get easily frustrated about my lack of skill.
- I'm mainly aiming to catch up with what I could have missed these last couple of years. But if you think there's an ""older"" title I'd like, tell me anyway.
- I've already got my eyes on Control, Cyberpunk 2077, Outer Wilds and The Outer Worlds
Phew! I hope I haven't reduced the list of candidates too much

I've been accepted into GitHub Sponsors - if you have a Patreon pledge or other recurring donation to Tildes, I'd really appreciate it if you could move it over

When GitHub Sponsors was announced back in May, I applied immediately, and have just recently been accepted.
This is now, by far, the best way available to make a recurring donation to Tildes:
- They aren't currently charging any fees, even for payment processing.
- They're matching up to $5000 in contributions for the first year.
On Patreon, about 10% of every donation is taken between processing fees, Patreon's own fees, and PayPal (for transferring the money out to the bank). Even without the matching, donating through GitHub instead means that 10% more of your money (all of what you're donating) will come to Tildes, and until we exhaust the matching it's more like 2.2x. For example, a $5/month donation on Patreon results in Tildes receiving about $4.50, but through GitHub it will be $10.
So if you have an existing recurring donation (or would like to start donating), I'd really appreciate if you could do it through GitHub Sponsors. Tildes is a non-profit, and its only source of income is user donations—there's no advertising, no investors, and I'm not selling your data or anything else (and none of those will ever change). Donations are what makes it possible for me to keep working on the site. For some more info, please see the Donate page on the Docs site (which I'll update soon with info about GitHub Sponsors).
The page is here: https://github.com/sponsors/Deimos
A few quick notes:
- I believe you'll need a GitHub account to sponsor through here, but it's quick to create one.
- You have the choice of making your sponsorship private or public.
- You have to choose one of the pre-defined "tiers", but I tried to create ones that match the most common donations. If you need a different amount that isn't available, let me know and I can probably add it. I still have a couple of slots left for more tiers.
- If you're currently donating through Patreon, please remember to cancel your pledge through there if you move it over to GitHub. The next Patreon payment will happen on November 1.
I'm also working on a couple things to make the amount that's currently being donated to Tildes public, and I hope to have that available later this week (and hopefully with a much higher number because of the GitHub matching!).
Thanks very much, and if there's anything confusing about the process or if you have any questions, please let me know.
