Tildes Book Club - Voting thread winter spring 2024-2025
It's time to vote. This thread is for voting on the next set of books for book club. Voting will close end of day Sunday.
If you would like to read with us, please upvote as many as five titles. We will select at least four, probably more if there are books with solid support. I look forward to reading and discussing with you all.
There are a few people who voted before the thread was complete so books with authors earlier in the alphabet got a slight statistical advantage. I will take lessons for next time to avoid this.
I've compiled a list of GoodReads links, should anyone find value in that.
Dan Simmons Hyperion
Kim Stanley Robinson Ministry for the Future
Kurt Vonnegut Cats Cradle
Ted Chiang Stories of Your Life and Others
T Kingfisher A House With good Bones
Adrian Tchaikovsky Elder Race
Has anybody already read this? Looks right up my alley but it does have horror listed as a genre on Goodreads.. is it very scary?
It is not, except maybe existentially in the sense of dealing with loneliness. So no, not horror at all IMO
Thank you! Vote cast :D
Look, every Adrian Tchaikovsky book I've read has a touch of horror to it, and so does this one. I think it's one of his calling cards.
However, to me, this book is more Beauty and the Beast than Call of Cthulu.
It's Tchaikovsky, there's gonna be some horror guaranteed always. This one is not scary and is extremely light on the alien/buglike/other-weird biology for his work [which is the source of the 'some horror guaranteed']
Yeah I've read some of his other works and I wouldn't say that they meet the definition of horror vs SF. If you don't like spiders, or the slow demise of the human race, you could absolutely find "horror" in them but I don't think any of them meet the genre.
doesn't like bugs of any kind at ALL and some tchaikovsky is totally off-limits
Very understandable!

I'd be interested if we did Emily Wilson's "plain english" translation.

Just want to thank everyone for their contributions. This is a killer list. Choosing 5 was hard. Adding a lot of things to my TBR today.
Thanks as always to @boxer_dogs_dance for keeping things running smoothly.
Seriously! I really had to work hard to get it down to 5. There are so many of these I would read.
Great choices everyone.
Just wanted to chime in and say thanks for doing all this @boxer_dogs_dance. And I totally agree with everyone else too, this was a great list! Which makes me kinda sad because the next few months are going to be a wash for me since we're moving in Dec. I haven't even managed to find the time to finish Kindred yet. I'm still only 35% of the way through it even though I am greatly enjoying it. :(
I am also behind on kindred although I hope to finish soon.
After the City we became, the next book will be end of January unless someone wants to step in and cover December for me.
Selfish of me to say, but fingers crossed that nobody fills in for you then... so I won't miss out on reading any of these books. :P
I think skipping December would be appreciated by many. I know that between holidays and End of Year accounting at work, my time spent reading usually plummets in December.
I, too, think it would be ok to skip December. Maybe December is a "free period" for all of us and we can have a "Year in Reading Review" kind of thread/conversation?
Interesting idea, thank you!
I would like to second thanking everyone and especially @boxer_dogs_dance for all the effort. There are so many good suggestions! Might as well just make the whole list my TBR list.
@boxer_dogs_dance
I saw that you posted all the entries yourself this time. Did you run into rate limits when doing so?
I did. I have coordinated with @deimos in past nomination threads and I hope to do that in future also. I lost my opportunity to vote by posting the books myself this time.
Ah, I didn’t even think about the vote loss aspect.
Since you’re tallying them up, you can always just manually add in your votes to the tally, even if it doesn’t show up on-site. I definitely think you should have a say in what we read — you’re the backbone of this whole club!
wholeheartedly agree. boxer_dogs_dance puts a lot of effort into this, and I don't think anyone could begruge them adding their votes to the final tallies :)
