Introductions | June 2018
Hey I'm @Ten and I'm an... oh wait, wrong forum.
Anyways I've already introduced myself before but I wanted to start a new one so all of the new people can get in and feel welcome.
I'm Ten, formerly /u/TheLetter10 and other accounts for ~8 years on Reddit. I'm 34, am disabled, trans and really messed up. I was interested in ~Tildes because I miss the early days of Reddit before it got really bogged down by memes and poor "Reddit Policy". I stream on Twitch under (original name) theletterten and can usually be found around the whole internet under that or variation of that. I have so far invited three really cool people to Tildes and I can't wait to meet more of you <3
Also shoutout to my good friend @icecapman10
Edit June 3rd, 151am: I have read every single comment so far and I love the different types of people we've got here! Love them!
Hi - I'm @thesteve - 10+ years on Reddit as /u/jabberwonk. The constant shitposting and overused puns on every thread is getting overwhelming there, and combined with the rampant hate speech it was time to find a new home. I'm 51, married with one daughter, work as CTO for my company, and live on the east coast of the U.S. We're also big Disney fans and have a trip scheduled for Thanksgiving as a surprise for our daughter. This will be our 5th trip but the first one we're trying to do as a complete surprise.
Hey! Also a huge Disney fan. We live in Cali so go to Disneyland quite a bit and try to make it to Disney World once every couple years (and Tokyo Disney once too!) Are you guys planning on doing all the parks when you visit this Thanksgiving? Have you been to Animal Kingdom since they opened Pandora? The lines are are ridiculous but the new Avatar Flight of Passage ride is amazing!
Hi I am cain, known elsewhere as caindaddy I've been moderating /r/sports since before it was a default and had like 100k subs, and prior to that I was an /r/nba mod, I am mainly the layout/flair guy as I have little interest in moderating flamewars.
I came to ~ because reddit was getting too hard for me to read, the predictability of comments before you even open them was too damn high. I love it so far and look forward to it's growth.
I am a 25 year old veteran, I worked on submarines. I do water chemistry/plant operation. Now I live in SC doing the same thing until I get settled in, when I will use that sweet, sweet GI Bill to go to school for engineering, I hope to get into the growing aerospace industry after that.
Yo, I am not high.
I left reddit because of the direction in which they were taking the site. They are becoming a lot more facebook-y, tracking every little thing you do on the site etc. That's not what reddit originally stood for. I was on reddit since nearly the beginning, under various aliases.
Anyway, enough about reddit. I'm in my 30s, am mentally ill, and just looking for a place to chill. So here I am
yeah, many of us probably are :(
Hi! I'm @MyTildesAccount, and I'm not as interesting as all those other guys in this thread.
Really, I'm pretty boring. Not smart or clever, not doing an interesting job. I'm trying to catch up to classing both in books and film, but I pretty much don't watch or read anything modern. I'm interested in linguistics and history. I aspire to become a teacher.
I'm, like, 80% certain that you're more interesting than you're claiming. I may be basing that off almost nothing, but I'm still holding to it. Okay, maybe 85%.
I don't know much history, but the time periods I found interesting, I found really interesting. Latched on, dove in, gobbled up as much as I could find. Of course my memory is complete garbage. So I still end up not knowing very much about the brief little windows I found interesting.
Point is, history has a bad rap for being boring when really it's about as fascinating as you allow it to be for yourself, pretty much without bounds.
Pretty much any subject is as interesting as you allow it to be. Sadly, I didn't understand it until recently (thanks, school), and now I gotta move to study in uni, then work, and I regret not spending the time I had in school to learn. Especially to learn to learn.
But I'm still incredibly boring, and my social circles agree. Of course, every human is interesting in their own way and yata yata, but it's not always worth your time to get to know that person. I'm OK with that, and I try to make friends with people who I find interesting.
Glad to see someone else with an interest in linguistics! Judging by the fact that no one else mentioned it, I don't think we will have enough interest to justify our own topic any time soon, but hopefully there are enough of us to have some good discussions in ~science.
When you say nothing modern, what do you mean? I love older movies, but you probably don't mean things like Cool Hand Luke and Jeremiah Johnson I'm guessing?
I mean like Marvel movies or whatever else is popular now.
Speaking of linguistics and history, I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on Steven Pinker's new book, "Enlightenment Now"?
I've heard a quite a lot of praise as well as some very well written critiques that seem to have a lot of weight.
Hello, I'm Yuli Ban. Aspiring novelist, Born Again Singularitarian, robosexual, and freelance black best friend™. You will undoubtedly see me plugging niche futurist subreddits and doing everything I can to make "heavy rock" music popular until it gets old and stale.
I run about 70 subreddits, most with less than 100 subs. Attempts to hijack more popular subreddits have, so far, failed.
I've identified a base desire for making an impact, regardless of if my name is attached to something, so I will suck every dick on earth so long as at least one of my ideas becomes famous. Preferably more than one.
If my desired world came to pass, there'd be about ten Black Sabbath/Witchfinder General ripoffs playing on rock radio/playlists at any one time, electronic music would have gotten its own Sgt. Pepper, slice of life science fiction would be topping sales charts, most Western governments would have pinko heads of states, the word "gynoid" would be used to describe fembots, I'd be a millionaire with a gynoid wife, and there would be a focus on fully-automated worker cooperatives in the mainstream. So far, none of that will ever happen in my lifetime so I don't know what I'm even doing here.
I'm also undergoing a quarter life crisis, so the quickest way to trigger me is to bring up year-related facts.
For example!
Et cetera et cetera. Don't say any of that, it triggers me.
So I shouldn't mention how much it sucks to realize that you can now/soon refer to your life's events in terms of decades ago? That one threw me for a loop. "I traveled to Australia two decades ago." Actually feels kinda fun now. The other one that got me was when I realized that I was almost twice as old as my adult students.
Lol!
And thanks for those examples, btw, now you've got me all angry and feeling old.
Hey y’all. I’ve got the same username here as I do on reddit. I’ve been using reddit over 6 years under various names (and sometimes none at all). I got tired of the racism, bigotry, and general assholeishness. The final straw was the ignorance about Africa and Africans from some of the black subs.
I’m really just looking for nuanced discourse on difficult topics where mutual respect is maintained. Don’t get me wrong; I love fun stuff too and have plenty of hobbies based around art and music. I don’t need to be serious all the time. But the political climate in the US is impossible to ignore and I need an outlet.
Beyond that, I’m a 34 year old Halfrican woman living in LA. I’m best described as heteroflexible. Don’t know how long I’ll last in this city as I’d like to buy a house soon. If I make it to ATL by this time next year I’ll be ecstatic.
A fellow 30 something living in LA! Nice to meet you. :)
I'm biracial as well -- I assume that's what Halfrican means? Embarrassed to say I've never used that term before. Or is it only applicable if a parent was actually born in Africa?
What is it about LA that you hate? And what's the draw to Atlanta, if you don't mind me asking?
Hello fellow 30 something! Still getting the hang of notifications on mobile... Halfrican just means one parent is 100% African and the other parent is something else. My dads side of the family is more of a kitchen sink of different ethnicities so I wouldn’t technically be “bi”racial. If I recall Obama can be biracial and Halfrican since his mom was only white and his dad was Kenyan.
I don’t hate LA. I do hate the housing market. I make very decent money and it bothers me how significant of a chunk of that has to go towards rent. And the kind of house I can afford? Ugh I’d rather keep renting.
I’ve been to Atlanta and I really enjoy it. I can afford a house that I’d actually enjoy living in. Closer to family who live in the neighboring states over there. It just makes sense to it give a try and see what happens.
heya ^-^
i'm olivia! i'm quitting reddit cuz they're allowing hate speech for their own revenue so i'm ignoring the site as best as i can.
so yeah, i'm olivia, some people call me livvy. i go by eljesT (archaic swedish term for "different") or pi (cuz i could memorize 35 decimals of pi as a kid). i'm 18, born and raised in sweden but a huge koreaboo. i love music and video games! been playing the drums for 80% of my life, and the guitar for like 60%. i play a lot of overwatch (currently around 2900) too, as well as tf2 and csgo, although not so much these days.
i'm an open book, so feel free to ask me anything!
3.141592653589793238462643383279? Sweet! A fellow pi-memorizer!
Fler svenskar!

Aethicglass is my glassblower's name. Social media wise, I was most active on Instagram. Took a bit of a hiatus for the past year though due to burn out, and went back to doing construction with my step dad. Been doing it since I was a kid, on and off. 35 now. Recently decided to start doing a YouTube vlog. It's been incredibly challenging, and I haven't been fully satisfied with a single thing I've made yet, but I've also been having a blast and feel like I'm growing a lot as a result. Most recently, I decided to start making an open-to-the-public treasure hunt around here in SoCal. If anyone is keen on the idea, you can check out me making the treasure in my vlog episode about it on my channel. So far, I only have a few friends that seem interested. But I would love to get more folks involved. I'm still working out the specifics for the hunts (I'm planning on 5 right now), so that's still forthcoming.
As far as coming here, I always have loved the feel of new communities, and this has been no exception. I've enjoyed every thread I've read through so far, and I find myself talking way more than I ever would on other sites. I feel like that's the case with others as well, and it makes for a really sweet dynamic. Reminds me of the old days of MUDs and MOOs.
Edit: I realized that it might sound like I only really used Instagram, which evokes a certain image. I intended to say I was most active on IG for all my glass work, as opposed to Twitter or fb. I've been on Reddit and imgur around 7 years or so. Mostly a lurker though, different username that's probably not worth mentioning.
Oh awesome, is there any advice you can give to someone looking at getting into glassblowing? I started watching some of the revere glass videos a while back, and lampwork looks chill as hell. I'm just not sure how i should start out.
Revere's videos are great. Course I haven't seen any in a few years... I heard he got a new shop somewhere or something. Can't remember. Is he still making new ones?
Torch talk is a good resource on fb. Just lurk and search through old threads though. It got kinda massive, so beginner questions are always met with resentment. Still, there's a gold mine of info there. They've also been doing a weekly live show on YouTube for the past few years where they demo techs. That's also a lot to sift through.
Books might be better as a good starting place. Contemporary lampworking is compulsory and really good for fundamentals, mechanics, basic chem, heat gradients and all that good stuff.
A basic starter setup can easily run up to $2000 and over. It's expensive to start because overhead is high and you won't be able to produce much for a while. Some folks pick it up faster than others, but pretty much everything you make for the first 100 hours will be total garbage. But it's also the most beautiful garbage you'll ever see.
It's immensely frustrating when it goes wrong and incomparably satisfying when it goes right. Making a living off of production can be downright soul crushing though. It's good experience if you can find the work, but once you master the products it's a game of diminishing returns against sanity.
Market-wise, it's really niche-y. Everyone tries to carve out a specialty and fend off anyone else from "stealing". Really competitive, often juvenile personalities. Shops are often cutthroat to anyone who isn't a big name artist.
Have I scared you off yet? Haha it really is a crazy form of material to learn and it's worth every minute on the torch. It's a shame the industry is so uncohesive and cannibalistic because there are absolutely amazing things being done with glass nowadays that have legitimately never been seen before.
Hi there! I'm Teskeria. I've been an active reddit user for 7+ years, but I'm doing a little experiment where I try a different username for once, so I'm not gonna give my reddit name.
I'm a 30 year old woman living on the east coast of the US. I'm also in a polyamorous bee. I love playing D&D, reading, coloring, crocheting, and playing (a few) video games. I have two cats. I'm a theater professional too!
We're pretty broke (but doing better than we have done in the past!) so no trips to WDW for us, but I do have a contracting gig that occasionally takes me to near places (most recently, Glacier Bay and Alaska).
Hello! I'm @Icecapman10 ! I am an asexual male that is blind in one eye. I am a huge Disney fan, even going to Walt Disney World 3-5 times a year. I also play a lot of video games from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but I also play some modern games as well. I also love messing around with retro computers. I am also an alright Microsoft Paint artist (Link to where I post my stuff: icecapman10.tumblr.com) The reason I was interested in ~Tildes is because I wanted to experience what the early days of Reddit were like.
Hey, those are pretty cool! Nice work!
Who is your favorite Disney character? And if it's Mickey Mouse, then who is next?
My favorite Disney character is Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. He was one of Walt's characters before Mickey, and the history of the character is very interesting.
I was Disney Springs not to long ago and saw an Oswald plushie. He was very cute!
I love that Sonic!
I drew it in a version of MSPaint from 1993. I collect versions of MSPaint.
This dude's family is super rich. Tell me ice, is this your third or fourth time going to WDW this year? I've lost count ;)
first
Oh that's right this is 2018. I keep forgetting.
Hey yall, it's toaster.
I'm a male in my mid-20's from the Southeast US and have been on reddit since about 2010-2011 under a few names, oddly enough was on imgur before that. I've learned a lot from reddit and a few hobbies have come from it over the years, but alas it feels as if the content is now struggling despite some communities that remain helpful and positive. Other than that I like to play video games (mainly RTS - any Northgard players hmu) and watch shows like WestWorld.
For work I am a JavaScript and psuedo-ETL dev with an IT background. At home I run a Docker container infrastructure on CentOS, mostly for running Plex. I'm also a huge fan of mechanical keyboards.
Hey all! I'm @frostycakes, was a 6 year redditor over there too. I've gotten tired of the slow downhill slide of Reddit qualitywise, and with the increasing bigotry too, I've been wanting out. Thankfully ~ seems to be the type of community I've been looking for.
I'm a 27 year old male from Colorado who splits my time between my job as a produce manager at a grocery store, my wonderful man of five years, and getting outside to hike and just enjoy nature. I'm also a big fan of cannabis, indie music, and all things Linux. I'm actually considering a switch of careers to the IT world, but we'll see.
Hi, I’m roadrunner. I was granted asylum yesterday and I’ve been off Reddit since. I’m here hoping to find and/or build communities with: composers & recording musicians, people interested in politics & constructive political dialogue, folks who care about privacy & security, film and music buffs, among others. Hopefully I find a new topic or two that I can grow into and that broaden my horizons.
I feel comfortable here; like I can join in conversations or ask questions without worrying about tribal bs. I hope this remains true for all decent newcomers.
I'm @evye, kanyenkeha:ka niwakowensio:ten; Koránhe nitewake:non. I am Mohawk and Delaware (the nation, not the American state) and I live in Canada. I speak English, je parle francais, tahnon Kanyenkeha kateweienhstha.
I can speak intelligently about English literature, films, knitting and other fiber arts, some video games but not others, board and tabletop games, and certain history topics. I can fudge my way through conversations about history in general, politics, philosophy and comparative religion. I might go on small but informative rants about Indigenous issues and the Canadian Residential School system (and may have already brought it up...) I like helping out where I can, and I don't mind answering questions I can answer. I'm glad to be part of the community :)
Hello! I'm Stardivarius. I'm studying computer science. In addition to programming, I like animals, cartoons and travelling. I've been a redditor for about 6 years and I wanted to give Tildes a try because of the direction reddit seems to be going in. I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with my life.
What programming language is your favorite and why? I like Python, but it is definitely not my specialty. Im more systems based.
Edit - your not yoir
I am still in the beginnings of my programming endeavours, but so far I like Java. Mostly because I find it pretty straightforward to use and object oriented programming comes pretty naturally to me. I want to learn Python at some point as well, looks pretty neat!
Good luck on everything.
I'm Mechangel. I lurked on Reddit until the Digg Exodus in 2010, and finally made an account at that point. I really enjoyed Reddit when it felt like a little community and people spent more time actually talking to each other, but it's just so huge now. I'm in my mid 30s and really like point and click adventures (old and new), electronic music and graphic novels. My husband and I have a project car that we work on sometimes and I enjoy that as well, especially because I really don't know what I'm doing and learning is fun.
Hey, I'm BeskarKomrk. I've been on reddit for 6+ years, but I've definitely used it less and less over the years, mostly due to the increase in random bigotry. I work as an engineer doing a combination of research and programming. I recently turned 25, which prompted a minor life crisis, so I'm spending this year trying to complete some personal projects. In my spare time, I play guitar, sing, and write songs, as well as playing in/DMing a couple of D&D campaigns. I'm a big fan of sci-fi/fantasy books, cooking, eating, and science/research more generally. I'm a bit of a news junkie. I also have a very cute dog who is asleep on the couch next to me.
Hey, I'm lucha26k, a new username I made for this site. In my 30s, married, and father of a toddler.
I work from home, so I have my son all day. Which is awesome and rough. But mostly awesome. I like sports, music, movies, video games, all that stuff. Big fan of MST3K/Rifftrax.
I'm here because I was frustrated with Reddit's low effort, meme-driven content, along with the negativity. I was also just wasting time on Reddit, as opposed to actually being engaged in the content.
I hope you have a great day!
My man. Have you watched the new Netflix series? It was... alright, I guess. I still prefer Rifftrax overall though, TBH. I love their commentary on more mainstream stuff... even on shows/movies that are actually quality and that I enjoyed the first time I watched them. It just adds so much more to the experience by rewatching something to see what they picked up on that I didn't.
I agree on the new season. The jokes are really funny, but they are REALLY fast. That took some getting used to.
I prefer when they riff 80s and 90s movies as opposed to the 50s and 60s monster movies. For some reason I just can't get into them. That's why I'm mostly a Rifftrax guy, and am a Mike guy for MST3K. However, in the latest season 12 update from Joel, he said they were doing a movie that's been released in the last five years, so I'm really excited about that.
Hi, I'm @basicbaconbitch and I've been on Reddit for over 7 years (under a different username; I'm switching to this one on Reddit and here). I'm also a 30-something woman living on the East Coast. I love reading, listening to music, watching movies and TV shows set in different time periods, travelling, and learning new things.
What are some of your favorite shows? You said different time periods, so... The Crown? Outlander?
Both, although I haven't seen Outlander in awhile (I don't have Showtime). I also love a lot of BBC productions such as Pride and Prejudice (1995) and North and South (2004).
Hi! I'm NixT, a 6 yr Redditor. I'm a mother of two grown(ish) sons, a pharmacy technician, avid reader, decent cook and lover of all things Elder Scrolls. There seem to be some very interesting people here and I'm excited to be a part of it. Cheers!
Hello all, just looking for decent conversation once in awhile. I'm a boring old white dude who's happily married, overweight, has a job that was better until the casino I work for was bought by a larger company and who sits in his recliner in front of the tube or computer instead of reading or actually getting out and doing things. Glad to be here.
I'm Trin, European, in my late 20s. I've lived in Eastern Europe for the first half of my adult life and in UK for the second, and now it's all weird and I don't know where I want to be or where it would be better for me to live.
I'm a grad student focusing on digital humanities, currently in the process of writing up my thesis and freaking out. :D I'm married to a lovely guy, and we have a cat and a dog. In my spare time, I play a lot of story-driven video games, and doing whatever hobby I'm currently most interested in. Right now, that's learning how to longboard and to read tarot cards. (I though the latter would be easy, but how do you interpret a card that's literally just a couple of sticks??) In the past, it was knitting (still do it but only during the cold months), playing the guitar (my guitar is sadly in storage right now), bullet journaling (still do it but with way less effort) and skincare (can't be arsed to do it even though I know I should).
I've been going on about needing a better online space to be for ages. I loved mIRC and phpbb forums of old, and I was an active participant in a bunch of online communities that are all long dead by now. Reddit is like something I could only dream about as a teenager, only to then grow up and see it turn into a dystopia. I'm tired of the ignorance, lack of fact-checking, knee-jerk responses etc. on there. As a scientist with a background in sociology, I'm especially sick of how much people weigh in with their opinions on something when they have absolutely zero relevant experience or knowledge. Here's to hoping ~ will be better.
Hello, Kevoun here.
I'm a pretty run off the mill redditor under the same username, it's my gamertag so you can find me everywhere else under the same. I don't play as much video games these days but still try to keep my LoL rank up. Currently I spend a lot more time on the board game renaissance, hiking, biking to breweries, etc.
I'm a database developer by trade, and enjoy building computers. Just finished up a headless Debian build, fiddling with docker containers and VMS in my spare time.
@ten Great name. I always liked thecolorten as a name. So the see theletterten makes me hapoy. Ten is great too! Short and simple.
I'll be 30 in Dec. I am a man who lives in Tulsa, OK. I like working on my property, Chess, and anything IT related.
Hey, I'm n3onis from Slovenia.
Like most of us here, I am here to help build a community that reddit once was.
Other than that, I'm currently studying IT and there's not much left to it.
Oh, and I like to play games.
Hi, I'm lobster
I came here to get away from how toxic and repititious Reddit has become. I tried Voat back in it's early days, but it plummeted fast in my opinion.
Anyway, looking forward to hanging out with you folks, so far everyone seems cool.
I also tried Voat and at first, it was OK.. until the constant name calling for being trans. I think I spent less than a week there.
Glad to have you here.
hey, I'm Paradoxa. I feel the need to introduce myself here for fear of missing out on the group fun, but I also feel like I have nothing valuable to say to a blind group of strangers. I'll probably be happier to not reveal much about myself.
i hope we can make this community warm and exciting. I'm very happy to be part of this "reddit restart".
Hey Kat. I love the simplicity of your site and I am so sorry that you seem to be suffering from a lot of the same stuff that I am. Your tabletop RPG project sounds cool.. I would be interested but I literally don't have friends in meatspace, as all of them are just here in cyberspace. Welcome to ~Tildes and I hope to interact more with you in this place!
I'm gonna throw a follow to you on Twitter, so if you see Letter10Media, don't freak out completely.
I've tried to join DnD with some friends on Roll20 but it just doesn't click for me (I think?), same with Tabletop Simulator.
Oh, I'm an open book. Of course there is the depression, anxiety, fibromylagia, chronic fatigue syndrome, bipolar disorder and PTSD.. unfortunately I haven't been able to see a real psychologist because my state (Oklahoma) decided to make it an even more pain in the ass to qualify for medicaid. It's a whole long issue spanning two years involving my wife, kids and my mother in law. I'm sure I have other things that haven't been diagnosed yet and all of my meds over the last 1.5 years has become ineffective.. and sadly this last week just TWO of seven of my meds were over $500 total alone. My dad has been supporting me since I lost my job in 2015 due to ((((everything)))) and I feel incredibly guilty and worthless because I can't take care of myself anymore. I used to have hope things would get better or I'd get lucky that something good would happen, but when I have literally tried every option in my state to only end up worse, it really drains me. It's been super fun /s
Well I try not to say the F word on Reddit and here.. so everything will be henceforth referred to as "a clusterduck"
Oh I know, I'm a ((((globalist)))).
I'm better than this, I shouldn't shitpost.
Hi! Just commenting to say very cool site and very informative. I learned a handful of new things just clicking through some of the links. Sorry to hear about the struggles with your health. Keep us posted about the Tabletop RPG you're working on!
Howdy folks. Triseult here.
I'm a freelance narrative game writer and serious travel addict. I'm originally from Canada, but I haven't lived there for the last ten years (though I visit often and with pleasure). I've had the immense privilege of living in China, South Korea, rural India, Thailand, and Mexico, and now I'm in the process of relocating to Bulgaria for the foreseeable future. I'm perfectly bilingual in French and English (French is my native language but my written English is superior from reading almost exclusively in English since I was 14). I know enough Spanish to get drunk with Mexicans, and enough Mandarin to avoid ordering dog meat by mistake. (True story.) I also know a bit of Korean and Bulgarian.
I love science fiction in all media, as well as gargantuan beasts with a dislike for Japanese capitals. I've worked in games for the last 15 years (Jesus Christ I'm old) but now I'm leaning more towards cinema and fiction. Hoping to kick off my grand science fiction novel in the next few months.
I just wanted to say I'm jealous of your life. Living in all of those places sounds amazing. I feel like not traveling as much will be my biggest regret when I'm older and on my death bed.
Care to share any details about your novel?
It's been a good life so far. These travel tales don't always talk about the less glamorous side of traveling (so many cockroach stories...) but for me the positives massively outweigh the negatives, that's for sure.
Don't regret, man... Go for it. It's easier and cheaper than you think. :)
For the novel... I'm afraid I can't. Too early in the process!! Call me superstitious but discussing it at this point would kind of spoil my drive to write it and tell this story!
Hello tildes!
Today is my first day here. Found out about tildes on r/truereddit I think and decided to ask for an invite right away. I've been on reddit for about 8 years or so. Not sure i'm leaving it yet, i feel like it is a good way to keep up with whats going on in different aspects of the world. But, I also don't like the direction it is heading.
I'm interested in foraging & herbal medicine, photography, travel, education, cryptocurrency, technology, science... I've lived around the US and Europe. I have two kids, the youngest was born three weeks ago.
My deepest rabbit hole at the moment is cryptotwitter. I got my first bitcoin in 2014 mostly because of my punkrock youth. I suppose I something about it being intertwined with our future and am more and more convinced that blockchain is a buzz word and Bitcoin will be around as long as the internet exists. But i'm not sure of anything.
Congratulations on the new baby! :)
Thanks. I have to say that it is a bit easier than I remembered from the first! But it's just the beginning.

Hi, I'm BlackLedger. I'm a Canadian expat living in the Caribbean. I'm an ex-video game developer and current VP at a Quant Hedge Fund. I grew up in rural Canada and spent a significant chunk of my teenage years in the 1990s on Usenet and various MUDs and MUSHs.
I was mostly on MOOs, but I played on a few MUDs here and there. Can't remember what were for the life of me though. Still, those were a blast. Had more friends in other countries online than I did irl. I even remember being really confused why everyone was ending their sentences in :). I thought it had something to do with MOO programming, or was a bug or something. "Look sideways," they said. And I thought they were making a joke about my confusion, and I ended up more confused. Then the light dawned and >=P was born.
Hey everyone, 10thTARDIS here.
I've been on Reddit for years (6+ years under this username, and another two or three on previous usernames), but I've been getting increasingly disheartened by the various issues with Reddit over the last couple years. I'm looking forward to helping Tildes grow over the coming months, and to getting a reprieve from Reddit's Eternal September!.
I work in information security at a very large company in the central United States, and in my free time I enjoy playing with my homelab, poking at video games, reading books, and cooking.
Heya, I'm ContemplativePanda. I run a couple online communities and so I naturally spend a lot of time in them myself which is why I'm here. I was invited here by my good friend, and my favorite letter of the alphabet as well as insect. Let's see if anyone can point him out.
I like to play a couple games. Right now I waste time with Factorio, Pubg, and Fortnite. If any of you are particularly interested in Factorio I have a server I'd be willing to interview you and possibly extend an invite for. I currently run the factory with a team of engineers each specializing in different areas and we all work on different projects to improve it. Pretty fun playing with a bunch of cool people.
Hi, I'm seila, I play games and sometimes do streaming and design stuff. I'm not gonna do any self promotion here but you'll probably find me in UI/Design/sometimesgeneralart threads. Nice to meetcha.
Hi, everyone! I'm @June (taken from June of the Zero Escape series, and not the current month :P) I've been on Reddit for about a solid three years now under different accounts, I guess. I'm a 16-year-old male who likes talking to his friends, learning foreign languages (not trying to sound "iamverysmart"-y; I really do enjoy learning my main ones), and generally being lazy all the time. EDIT: I'm tired and I used the wrong word.
Hey all! I am v. Like most of us here, I am also coming from Reddit. I am in the early 30s and recently discovered my love for programming. So, in my day job, I work as a backend developer and I mostly use Go. Here to spend time, learn and be part of this growing community.
:D
Excellent timing, so I can make my first comment. I'm pompomtom, on basically everything (I think there's some American using the name on youtube....). I'm Australian, presently unemployed (which sucks a bit), and enjoy messing with microcontrollers, drinking beer, making/smoking/eating cheese.
I have been on Reddit for years, but I really only use it for the microcontroller stuff. I've been on Metafilter for yonks.
Hey, I'm /u/Cloberella on Reddit and also here. I've had reddit for almost 8 years (cake day next week). I found out about Tildes through /r/TrueReddit. I'm in my mid-30s, have a boring office job, and live in the Midwest, though I'm originally from New England.
Hello.
I am from India! I know, probably a minority on this website. I joined here cause I miss the old Reddit. The Reddit form 7-8 years ago. I want to relive that and it's been just a few hours since I joined but this website is giving me serious nostalgia of the old high quality reddit and not the current mainstream one. :D
Hello everyone
I'm a reddit transplant, here hoping to find a site with a higher quality of content and discussion than reddit. So far it looks good, and I'm seriously appreciating the amount of effort the admins are putting into building a community and a website which encourage good behaviors. The tag system and nested topic system seem like a fantastic idea, and I love the thought that was put into user privacy. Cheers to the tilde team, thanks for the invite, and good luck to this site!
Hi there! @itsthejoker reporting in; 27, senior software developer working on python and the web. Tildes caught my attention and I'm interested to see what this is and where it goes.
Howdy yall; Chopincakes here. I'm in the NE USA.
Big fan of collecting music (both physical and digital) from a pretty huge variety of genres. In a dual masters in Public Health and Bioethics and majored in Psychology with a Sociology minor in undergrad. I work in neuropsych lab. I have huge soft spot for poetry and literature, socialism, and the roles media/society play in our lives. I came to ~ because I'm tired of my personal data being sold for capitalistic purposes.
I'm really into brewing tea and making fancy cocktails. I play Overwatch a few times a week and pretty hit-or-miss (1891 silver scrub). I play a ton of board games as well as brew janky-ass terrible modern-playable MTG decks. Also a pretty big fan of hiking and camping.
I was an AmeriCorps member for 4 years and am still pretty involved in civic engagement opportunities in my area.
Hi! What kinds of board games are you into? Me and my crew have a monthly game night and play numerous kinds of games. Always looking for new suggestions and recommendations. Recently finished Pandemic Legacy Season 1 and looking forward to starting up Season 2.
Howdy!
Pandemic Legacy S1 is possibly one of my favorite board games, but we've been slowly playing it over the span of a year. I have a second copy though, for another play through.
I like a ton of different kinds of board games; I can't really nail down a specific genre. Roll for the Galaxy is another favorite of mine; Mysterium is really good on a chill day; I love the auction system in Power Grid. Captain Sonar is one that I love the concept but I really want to try playing more! My friends and I do a lot of hiking trips and one of the funnest experiences I've had is when they brought the game Dark Stories which was great to just walk, climb, and wonder how the fuck someone got murdered.
I went to Pax Unplugged last year and got to play an early access game called Tulip Bubble which is probably the most beautiful game I've ever played. Going again this year and can't wait.
How about yourself?
I've never heard of Dark Stories, but I'm going to check it out now. We enjoy Mysterium and Roll for the Galaxy too.
Recently, my wife and I have been playing Time Stories -- just the two of us. It's annoying that you have to buy a new deck for new scenarios, but the game mechanics are fun. We also love playing Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert when it's just the two of us looking for something to play.
Have you heard of Ex Libris? I saw a "let's play" video of that one recently and it looked kinda fun and different than stuff we're used to playing.
Also, not related to board games, but have you ever done Escape Rooms? Just thought as a board game fan you might enjoy those. We happen to live in a city that has dozens of them, but I know more companies are popping up all over the country.
I haven't heard of "Ex Libris"-- what is it about? Can you link the "Let's Play"? I've also never heard of Time Stories, but Forbidden Island was pretty cool the few times I've played it!
I've done Escape Rooms twice now and loved each time. Also live just outside a city and I'd say we have maybe 5 of them or so, so I really should look into them more!
I guess it's more of a review than a Let's Play, but it got me interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKvVF4PwYW0
Oh awesome! Watching now.
Speaking of games about books, Biblios is another light and quick, but very fun, game to check out if you haven't already!
Oooh, that one looks cool. Might have to pick it up! Thanks!
Hi, I'm Luca. Actually got my real name here, which is great.
I'm a software developer/part time student (finishing my bachelors, as I got hired and dropped out during my second year). Currently working devops for a fortune 500 you've probably never heard of unless you're in the ERP business. You also probably hate our software. Come talk to me about Docker and Linux and stuff.
I listen to metal (love me some good folk metal and power metal), am a craft-beer connoisseur, and used to play some videogames professionally/semi-pro (specifically WoW, Quake 3, and a bit of TF2). Also do hiking, camping, kayaking, all that fun stuff.
Hi I’m AReluctantTilder, (/u/AReluctantRedditor) and I’m on here because I feel like it could be a blast to learn about the growth of a site from infancy. Also reddit is doing some things that I’m an less than pleased with. So there’s that.
I’m a computer Engineering student who is looking to build a home lab soon so hopefully ~comp can help
Hello all. I'm crazydemon, redditor of the same name. I don't have a whole lot to say about myself. I like music, driving and camping. I work in IT, but I'm sort of a jack of all trades. I seek knowledge and perspective. I'm looking forward to being part of the community!
Hi, I'm sxo and not doing that hackneyed AA bit.
I'm a tranarchist estronaut who likes to shoot up research chemicals from China and argue with people on the internet who have wrong opinions. I'm looking for a new home on the internet, so I can have a place to both feel superior to other people who can't keep their cool while arguing and spew my acidic vitriol when I feel like I'm right. I'm going to have problem with not being an asshole but hey, just downvote and move on!
There is no downvoting on ~ and if you’re going to be a habitual asshole... you’re probably going to be banned. Just fair warning. Edit: and hopefully that intro was just sarcasm.
Yeah I know, I was being facetious. See, already having problems with it!
E: That's the only part of the intro that wasn't me being funny. Just shot up some 3-MeO-PCP.
Heh... this is why I desperately want a ‘sarcasm’ tag people can apply on their own comments. So hard to tell parody from reality these days it seems. :/
Just wondering—where do you source them from?
Google+trial&error=some fun chems and some not so fun police raiding my apartment.
Always fun!
Hi, I'm designer, indeed a designer. (Filmmaker and communication designer.)
But I am not interested in commercial advertising, which communication designers would usually go on to do. Seemed like there are giant real-world problems that call for well-designed communication and so I'm speaking with NGOs and researchers to build a bridge between the worlds of "reaching the masses" and "discovering how some big problems work/what to do". This would become an agency/network for communication about things like all kinds of oppression and unnecessary suffering, flaws in the political system, and ecological economy. I read Current Affairs magazine, LessWrong, books, and sometimes SlateStarCodex. (Say hi if these ring a bell! I don't agree with everything from all of these, of course.)
On Reddit, I'd been mostly lurking for three years or so. What got me here: The comment about adblockers finding next to nothing on this site! Really nice to see this happening. Hopefully this will turn out a well-kept garden, admin behaviour so far is promising. :)
Hi, I'm jerbear64. I'm interested in programming, Linux, music, music production, system hacking/homebrew, video games, and just tech in general.
I am an admin on the Binding of Isaac Discord server, and owner of the Linux Gaming Discord server, both of which are partnered.
I joined Tildes because Reddit at this point is too large and isn't nearly as inviting as it used to be, and (similarly to Digg) the site is trying to become something it isn't. I'd like for Tildes to be a smaller, more tightly woven community, free from the laughable practices and privacy policy of Reddit.
I'm currently playing through Overload, the spiritual successor of the Descent series, and it's nothing short of fantastic. I also continually come back to Freespace 2 and The Binding of Isaac- the former because of the plentiful good user-made campaigns, and the latter because despite all its flaws, I can't help but come back to it.
Hello everyone! I'm @machete_Badger, no one special in particular~ :D
I've, like most people, wanted to move away from what reddit has become or is yet to become, and absolutely adore open communities with serious and warranted discussion! As for me, I'm in my early 20s attending University for an IT-related degree, and have a side passion for the arts, music, painting / drawing, novels etc.. I'm really into tech, free-software, GNU/Linux and animation, tho don't let anyone know I adore anime because that'd be the worst hehe!
Looking forward to meeting and getting along with everyone! :D
Just realized that I never posted here.
Hi everyone, I'm @SaucedButLeaking! I saw a thread on /r/TrueReddit about a new alternative and am really excited about this ship onto which I appear to be jumping. I'm a systems administrator by trade, and have a Bachelor's degree in English Literature (with a minor in poetry). I consider myself something of a renaissance man; I tend to flit from interesting topic to interesting topic, learning a little bit about everything. The overlap of skills is fascinating to me, and I find that pursuing these interests often leads to improvements elsewhere.
My name comes from a love of spoonerisms and Magic: the Gathering
Hi there! Fellow "renaissance man" here and I was just curious about some of your favorite poets? Any new or recent good poetry books you care to recommend?
My favorite poet is T. S. Eliot (especially The Waste Land and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock)
More recent poets on my shelf, which admittedly came primarily from college classes, include Rebecca London (Cadaver Dogs), Patricia Smith (Blood Dazzler), Brian Turner (Phantom Noise), and John Murillo (Up Jump the Boogie)
I'm @SuperHans, I'm a 27 year old queer male who lives in the Pacific Northwest. For most of my adult life, I have been working in the maritime industry with a couple short stops in hospitality. I'm now transitioning out of that and going back to school to study linguistics. I'm a relatively recently licensed HAM. My main interests are dogs, linguistics, news/politics, British television, Ham Radio, and lately I've been getting back into GNU/Linux and tech in general.
I'm really excited to be here, I've read through pretty much everybody's introductions and I love how diverse it is here. You all seem wonderful! The tolerance of hate speech and bigotry is what has really pushed away from reddit.
Hey yall. I'm @deciduous. I'm a recent graduate in the midwest working in the Computer Science field.
My main hobbies right now are working on fun side projects (apps at the moment), and playing competitive super smash brothers melee. I've actually moved away from social media recently, though I still go on reddit and even comment once in a while. Hopefully tildes will reignite my passion for social media. Looking forward to talking with all!
Hi Everyone. Arcticfox here.
In the 11 year club on reddit. University faculty member (Computer Science, 15 years, retired) and industry practitioner (31 years). I have pretty much given up on reddit as being a place of meaningful discussion.
In my spare time I like to tend bees and do permaculture. Oh yeah, I also squeeze lumps of coal into diamonds using my bare hands. I'm still working on the first one.
Do you have your own beehive? And if so, how much honey do you produce annually? Always wanted to get into beekeeping, but just no room for it at my house.
I do have my own hive. I'm planning to get a second one because it is useful to be able to swap between hives if something goes wrong in one of them (eg. not enough honey in one hive to get the bees through the winter or if one hive loses its queen and you need to re-queen it).
In a poor year, a hive around here will typically produce about 20kg of honey. In a good year, anywhere between 40-60kg of honey.
Lots of people beekeep in cities by putting a hive in the back yard. Bees actually do pretty well in cities because of the amount of flowers that people tend to plant.
And just in case this is of interest to you, it takes about 1.5-2kg of honey to brew a gallon of mead! :-)
Hey, @gabriel here. I've been on reddit under a few different accounts for 7+ years. I'm concerned about the direction they are taking toward being a more 'social media' type platform. I just wanna read interesting articles, listen to new music and have good conversations. I feel like that's still possible on reddit but is becoming increasingly challenging.
Other than that, I'm a fairly average 30-year-old, straight, white male. I enjoy reading, relaxing, and a variety of outdoor pursuits. I work as a Data Scientist for a SaaS organization and enjoy doing a little exploration of interesting data in my free time.
I'm @konketsu, and have been on reddit for almost 10 years under the same handle. I'm an early 40's music/audio/tech deviant from the shadowy urban decay of Canada's West Coast. I'm a married straight male misanthrope that is into William Gibson, techno/synthwave and the machines that make it, analog and digital photography, craft beer, cooking and subverting the dominant culture.
Well.. you didn't have to participate :\
I feel like it might be a bit foolish to ask a personal question to someone who just said they want privacy but knowing a guy who goes by Rev who has made it his mission to be upbeat and spread positivity, it seems too much of a coincidence not to ask. To keep it vague, are you a bartender?
will do man!
Hi! I'm @MrGabeFonseca and I made my way over here for many of the same reasons most of you did, so I won't bore you with that.
I'm 37, married, and currently working as a TV writer living in Los Angeles. I've written for a handful of TV dramas (that you've almost certainly never watched) and I love all kinds of movies, books and TV shows. I'm a huge NBA fan (Go Spurs!), lover of music (especially hip-hop) and of Broadway musicals. Never been a huge gamer... unless we're talking about old Sierra adventure games from the late 80s/early 90s!
Oh, and I'm also obsessed with cereal! I collect cereal boxes and have a YouTube channel called Cereal Time TV where I talk about old cereals and share boxes from my extensive collection.
Excited to be included in this new burgeoning community!
Cereal Time TV
Neat... that looks like fun (and you eating the old shit reminds me of Steve1989 or Ashens a bit). Subscribed. :)
Aww, that's awfully kind of you to say -- and even kinder of you to subscribe. Thanks!
I've stopped eating the old stuff after numerous fails. It never tastes the way I remember it (obviously) and then I just get sad for destroying my nostalgic memories of the cereal.
Haha that's understandable... but what you consider a fail, others might consider a success. ;) Sometimes people eating old food is fun to watch regardless of the outcome. Just gotta be careful not to get botulism. :/
