Noticed we have a lot of new people, so let's do a new "Introduce Yourself!" post!

Hey I'm @Ten and I'm an... oh wait, wrong forum.

Anyways I've already introduced myself before but I wanted to start a new one so all of the new people can get in and feel welcome.

I'm Ten, formerly /u/TheLetter10 and other accounts for ~8 years on Reddit. I'm 34, am disabled, trans and really messed up. I was interested in ~Tildes because I miss the early days of Reddit before it got really bogged down by memes and poor "Reddit Policy". I stream on Twitch under (original name) theletterten and can usually be found around the whole internet under that or variation of that. I have so far invited three really cool people to Tildes and I can't wait to meet more of you <3

Also shoutout to my good friend @icecapman10

Edit June 3rd, 151am: I have read every single comment so far and I love the different types of people we've got here! Love them!

Hi - I'm @thesteve - 10+ years on Reddit as /u/jabberwonk. The constant shitposting and overused puns on every thread is getting overwhelming there, and combined with the rampant hate speech it was time to find a new home. I'm 51, married with one daughter, work as CTO for my company, and live on the east coast of the U.S. We're also big Disney fans and have a trip scheduled for Thanksgiving as a surprise for our daughter. This will be our 5th trip but the first one we're trying to do as a complete surprise.

Are you guys planning on doing all the parks when you visit this Thanksgiving? Have you been to Animal Kingdom since they opened Pandora? The lines are are ridiculous but the new Avatar Flight of Passage ride is amazing!

Hi I am cain, known elsewhere as caindaddy I've been moderating /r/sports since before it was a default and had like 100k subs, and prior to that I was an /r/nba mod, I am mainly the layout/flair guy as I have little interest in moderating flamewars.

I came to ~ because reddit was getting too hard for me to read, the predictability of comments before you even open them was too damn high. I love it so far and look forward to it's growth.

I am a 25 year old veteran, I worked on submarines. I do water chemistry/plant operation. Now I live in SC doing the same thing until I get settled in, when I will use that sweet, sweet GI Bill to go to school for engineering, I hope to get into the growing aerospace industry after that.

I left reddit because of the direction in which they were taking the site. They are becoming a lot more facebook-y, tracking every little thing you do on the site etc. That's not what reddit originally stood for. I was on reddit since nearly the beginning, under various aliases.

Anyway, enough about reddit. I'm in my 30s, am mentally ill, and just looking for a place to chill. So here I am

Hi! I'm @MyTildesAccount, and I'm not as interesting as all those other guys in this thread.

Really, I'm pretty boring. Not smart or clever, not doing an interesting job. I'm trying to catch up to classing both in books and film, but I pretty much don't watch or read anything modern. I'm interested in linguistics and history. I aspire to become a teacher.

I don't know much history, but the time periods I found interesting, I found really interesting. Latched on, dove in, gobbled up as much as I could find. Of course my memory is complete garbage. So I still end up not knowing very much about the brief little windows I found interesting.

Point is, history has a bad rap for being boring when really it's about as fascinating as you allow it to be for yourself, pretty much without bounds.

But I'm still incredibly boring, and my social circles agree. Of course, every human is interesting in their own way and yata yata, but it's not always worth your time to get to know that person. I'm OK with that, and I try to make friends with people who I find interesting.

Hello, I'm Yuli Ban. Aspiring novelist, Born Again Singularitarian, robosexual, and freelance black best friend™. You will undoubtedly see me plugging niche futurist subreddits and doing everything I can to make "heavy rock" music popular until it gets old and stale.
I run about 70 subreddits, most with less than 100 subs. Attempts to hijack more popular subreddits have, so far, failed.

I've identified a base desire for making an impact, regardless of if my name is attached to something, so I will suck every dick on earth so long as at least one of my ideas becomes famous. Preferably more than one.
If my desired world came to pass, there'd be about ten Black Sabbath/Witchfinder General ripoffs playing on rock radio/playlists at any one time, electronic music would have gotten its own Sgt. Pepper, slice of life science fiction would be topping sales charts, most Western governments would have pinko heads of states, the word "gynoid" would be used to describe fembots, I'd be a millionaire with a gynoid wife, and there would be a focus on fully-automated worker cooperatives in the mainstream. So far, none of that will ever happen in my lifetime so I don't know what I'm even doing here.

I'm also undergoing a quarter life crisis, so the quickest way to trigger me is to bring up year-related facts.

    For example!

    • Children born in the summer of 2005 are now teenagers!
    • People born after 9/11 are now juniors in high school!
    • The Dreamcast is 20 years old!
    • The PlayStation 2 is so old, it's older to us than the NES was to it!
    • Limp Bizkit qualifies as classic rock!
    • Nirvana released Nevermind 27 years ago. 27 years before then, Beatlemania had just erupted in the USA!
    • We are as far removed from the release of GTA Vice City as it was from its setting— 16 years!
    • 2018 is to 1990 what 1990 is to 1962!

Et cetera et cetera. Don't say any of that, it triggers me.

Hey y’all. I’ve got the same username here as I do on reddit. I’ve been using reddit over 6 years under various names (and sometimes none at all). I got tired of the racism, bigotry, and general assholeishness. The final straw was the ignorance about Africa and Africans from some of the black subs.
I’m really just looking for nuanced discourse on difficult topics where mutual respect is maintained. Don’t get me wrong; I love fun stuff too and have plenty of hobbies based around art and music. I don’t need to be serious all the time. But the political climate in the US is impossible to ignore and I need an outlet.
Beyond that, I’m a 34 year old Halfrican woman living in LA. I’m best described as heteroflexible. Don’t know how long I’ll last in this city as I’d like to buy a house soon. If I make it to ATL by this time next year I’ll be ecstatic.

I'm biracial as well -- I assume that's what Halfrican means? Embarrassed to say I've never used that term before. Or is it only applicable if a parent was actually born in Africa?

What is it about LA that you hate? And what's the draw to Atlanta, if you don't mind me asking?

Hello fellow 30 something! Still getting the hang of notifications on mobile... Halfrican just means one parent is 100% African and the other parent is something else. My dads side of the family is more of a kitchen sink of different ethnicities so I wouldn’t technically be “bi”racial. If I recall Obama can be biracial and Halfrican since his mom was only white and his dad was Kenyan.

I don’t hate LA. I do hate the housing market. I make very decent money and it bothers me how significant of a chunk of that has to go towards rent. And the kind of house I can afford? Ugh I’d rather keep renting.

I’ve been to Atlanta and I really enjoy it. I can afford a house that I’d actually enjoy living in. Closer to family who live in the neighboring states over there. It just makes sense to it give a try and see what happens.

Aethicglass is my glassblower's name. Social media wise, I was most active on Instagram. Took a bit of a hiatus for the past year though due to burn out, and went back to doing construction with my step dad. Been doing it since I was a kid, on and off. 35 now. Recently decided to start doing a YouTube vlog. It's been incredibly challenging, and I haven't been fully satisfied with a single thing I've made yet, but I've also been having a blast and feel like I'm growing a lot as a result. Most recently, I decided to start making an open-to-the-public treasure hunt around here in SoCal. If anyone is keen on the idea, you can check out me making the treasure in my vlog episode about it on my channel. So far, I only have a few friends that seem interested. But I would love to get more folks involved. I'm still working out the specifics for the hunts (I'm planning on 5 right now), so that's still forthcoming.

As far as coming here, I always have loved the feel of new communities, and this has been no exception. I've enjoyed every thread I've read through so far, and I find myself talking way more than I ever would on other sites. I feel like that's the case with others as well, and it makes for a really sweet dynamic. Reminds me of the old days of MUDs and MOOs.

Edit: I realized that it might sound like I only really used Instagram, which evokes a certain image. I intended to say I was most active on IG for all my glass work, as opposed to Twitter or fb. I've been on Reddit and imgur around 7 years or so. Mostly a lurker though, different username that's probably not worth mentioning.

Revere's videos are great. Course I haven't seen any in a few years... I heard he got a new shop somewhere or something. Can't remember. Is he still making new ones?

Torch talk is a good resource on fb. Just lurk and search through old threads though. It got kinda massive, so beginner questions are always met with resentment. Still, there's a gold mine of info there. They've also been doing a weekly live show on YouTube for the past few years where they demo techs. That's also a lot to sift through.

Books might be better as a good starting place. Contemporary lampworking is compulsory and really good for fundamentals, mechanics, basic chem, heat gradients and all that good stuff.

A basic starter setup can easily run up to $2000 and over. It's expensive to start because overhead is high and you won't be able to produce much for a while. Some folks pick it up faster than others, but pretty much everything you make for the first 100 hours will be total garbage. But it's also the most beautiful garbage you'll ever see.

It's immensely frustrating when it goes wrong and incomparably satisfying when it goes right. Making a living off of production can be downright soul crushing though. It's good experience if you can find the work, but once you master the products it's a game of diminishing returns against sanity.

Market-wise, it's really niche-y. Everyone tries to carve out a specialty and fend off anyone else from "stealing". Really competitive, often juvenile personalities. Shops are often cutthroat to anyone who isn't a big name artist.

Have I scared you off yet? Haha it really is a crazy form of material to learn and it's worth every minute on the torch. It's a shame the industry is so uncohesive and cannibalistic because there are absolutely amazing things being done with glass nowadays that have legitimately never been seen before.

I'm a male in my mid-20's from the Southeast US and have been on reddit since about 2010-2011 under a few names, oddly enough was on imgur before that. I've learned a lot from reddit and a few hobbies have come from it over the years, but alas it feels as if the content is now struggling despite some communities that remain helpful and positive. Other than that I like to play video games (mainly RTS - any Northgard players hmu) and watch shows like WestWorld.

For work I am a JavaScript and psuedo-ETL dev with an IT background. At home I run a Docker container infrastructure on CentOS, mostly for running Plex. I'm also a huge fan of mechanical keyboards.

I've been a redditor for about 6 years and I wanted to give Tildes a try because of the direction reddit seems to be going in. I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with my life.

I'm Mechangel. I lurked on Reddit until the Digg Exodus in 2010, and finally made an account at that point. I really enjoyed Reddit when it felt like a little community and people spent more time actually talking to each other, but it's just so huge now. I'm in my mid 30s and really like point and click adventures (old and new), electronic music and graphic novels. My husband and I have a project car that we work on sometimes and I enjoy that as well, especially because I really don't know what I'm doing and learning is fun.

Hey, I'm BeskarKomrk. I've been on reddit for 6+ years, but I've definitely used it less and less over the years, mostly due to the increase in random bigotry. I work as an engineer doing a combination of research and programming. I recently turned 25, which prompted a minor life crisis, so I'm spending this year trying to complete some personal projects. In my spare time, I play guitar, sing, and write songs, as well as playing in/DMing a couple of D&D campaigns. I'm a big fan of sci-fi/fantasy books, cooking, eating, and science/research more generally. I'm a bit of a news junkie. I also have a very cute dog who is asleep on the couch next to me.

Hey, I'm lucha26k, a new username I made for this site. In my 30s, married, and father of a toddler.

I work from home, so I have my son all day. Which is awesome and rough. But mostly awesome. I like sports, music, movies, video games, all that stuff. Big fan of MST3K/Rifftrax.

I'm here because I was frustrated with Reddit's low effort, meme-driven content, along with the negativity. I was also just wasting time on Reddit, as opposed to actually being engaged in the content.

I hope you have a great day!

I love their commentary on more mainstream stuff... even on shows/movies that are actually quality and that I enjoyed the first time I watched them. It just adds so much more to the experience by rewatching something to see what they picked up on that I didn't.

I prefer when they riff 80s and 90s movies as opposed to the 50s and 60s monster movies. For some reason I just can't get into them. That's why I'm mostly a Rifftrax guy, and am a Mike guy for MST3K. However, in the latest season 12 update from Joel, he said they were doing a movie that's been released in the last five years, so I'm really excited about that.

I'm Trin, European, in my late 20s. I've lived in Eastern Europe for the first half of my adult life and in UK for the second, and now it's all weird and I don't know where I want to be or where it would be better for me to live.

I'm a grad student focusing on digital humanities, currently in the process of writing up my thesis and freaking out. :D I'm married to a lovely guy, and we have a cat and a dog. In my spare time, I play a lot of story-driven video games, and doing whatever hobby I'm currently most interested in. Right now, that's learning how to longboard and to read tarot cards. (I though the latter would be easy, but how do you interpret a card that's literally just a couple of sticks??) In the past, it was knitting (still do it but only during the cold months), playing the guitar (my guitar is sadly in storage right now), bullet journaling (still do it but with way less effort) and skincare (can't be arsed to do it even though I know I should).

I've been going on about needing a better online space to be for ages. I loved mIRC and phpbb forums of old, and I was an active participant in a bunch of online communities that are all long dead by now. Reddit is like something I could only dream about as a teenager, only to then grow up and see it turn into a dystopia. I'm tired of the ignorance, lack of fact-checking, knee-jerk responses etc. on there. As a scientist with a background in sociology, I'm especially sick of how much people weigh in with their opinions on something when they have absolutely zero relevant experience or knowledge. Here's to hoping ~ will be better.

I don't play as much video games these days but still try to keep my LoL rank up. Currently I spend a lot more time on the board game renaissance, hiking, biking to breweries, etc.

Awww, I’m sorry. :( Could I ask for elaboration, or something you wanna keep under wraps publicly?

Oh, I'm an open book. Of course there is the depression, anxiety, fibromylagia, chronic fatigue syndrome, bipolar disorder and PTSD.. unfortunately I haven't been able to see a real psychologist because my state (Oklahoma) decided to make it an even more pain in the ass to qualify for medicaid. It's a whole long issue spanning two years involving my wife, kids and my mother in law. I'm sure I have other things that haven't been diagnosed yet and all of my meds over the last 1.5 years has become ineffective.. and sadly this last week just TWO of seven of my meds were over $500 total alone. My dad has been supporting me since I lost my job in 2015 due to ((((everything)))) and I feel incredibly guilty and worthless because I can't take care of myself anymore. I used to have hope things would get better or I'd get lucky that something good would happen, but when I have literally tried every option in my state to only end up worse, it really drains me. It's been super fun /s

    Howdy folks. Triseult here.

I'm a freelance narrative game writer and serious travel addict. I'm originally from Canada, but I haven't lived there for the last ten years (though I visit often and with pleasure). I've had the immense privilege of living in China, South Korea, rural India, Thailand, and Mexico, and now I'm in the process of relocating to Bulgaria for the foreseeable future. I'm perfectly bilingual in French and English (French is my native language but my written English is superior from reading almost exclusively in English since I was 14). I know enough Spanish to get drunk with Mexicans, and enough Mandarin to avoid ordering dog meat by mistake. (True story.) I also know a bit of Korean and Bulgarian.

I love science fiction in all media, as well as gargantuan beasts with a dislike for Japanese capitals. I've worked in games for the last 15 years (Jesus Christ I'm old) but now I'm leaning more towards cinema and fiction. Hoping to kick off my grand science fiction novel in the next few months.

Not sure i'm leaving it yet, i feel like it is a good way to keep up with whats going on in different aspects of the world. But, I also don't like the direction it is heading.
I'm interested in foraging & herbal medicine, photography, travel, education, cryptocurrency, technology, science... I've lived around the US and Europe. I have two kids, the youngest was born three weeks ago.
My deepest rabbit hole at the moment is cryptotwitter. I got my first bitcoin in 2014 mostly because of my punkrock youth. I suppose I something about it being intertwined with our future and am more and more convinced that blockchain is a buzz word and Bitcoin will be around as long as the internet exists. But i'm not sure of anything.

    Hello everyone

I'm a reddit transplant, here hoping to find a site with a higher quality of content and discussion than reddit. So far it looks good, and I'm seriously appreciating the amount of effort the admins are putting into building a community and a website which encourage good behaviors. The tag system and nested topic system seem like a fantastic idea, and I love the thought that was put into user privacy. Cheers to the tilde team, thanks for the invite, and good luck to this site!

Hey folks, I'm an aspiring music creator, a hobbyist writer and a dabbling programmer. I'm entering a music technology course for university next year, but have yet to learn how to cook simple, necessary rations for myself. My survival living in a dorm room on my own is not guaranteed.

I'm not only a fan of anime, but I'm also far too lazy to become an enthusiast. I can't tell you much at all about Naruto, One Piece or HxH, but I sure can tell you that Jotaro is the best Jojo. I'm also a supporter of free software and staunchly against surveillance. Which leads to why I joined Tildes. It wasn't only because of the new Reddit layout (Which is terrible), but so I could help a more honest and small community grow. I hope it does!

Howdy yall; Chopincakes here. I'm in the NE USA.

Big fan of collecting music (both physical and digital) from a pretty huge variety of genres. In a dual masters in Public Health and Bioethics and majored in Psychology with a Sociology minor in undergrad. I work in neuropsych lab. I have huge soft spot for poetry and literature, socialism, and the roles media/society play in our lives. I came to ~ because I'm tired of my personal data being sold for capitalistic purposes.

I'm really into brewing tea and making fancy cocktails. I play Overwatch a few times a week and pretty hit-or-miss (1891 silver scrub). I play a ton of board games as well as brew janky-ass terrible modern-playable MTG decks. Also a pretty big fan of hiking and camping.

I was an AmeriCorps member for 4 years and am still pretty involved in civic engagement opportunities in my area.

Pandemic Legacy S1 is possibly one of my favorite board games, but we've been slowly playing it over the span of a year. I have a second copy though, for another play through.

I like a ton of different kinds of board games; I can't really nail down a specific genre. Roll for the Galaxy is another favorite of mine; Mysterium is really good on a chill day; I love the auction system in Power Grid. Captain Sonar is one that I love the concept but I really want to try playing more! My friends and I do a lot of hiking trips and one of the funnest experiences I've had is when they brought the game Dark Stories which was great to just walk, climb, and wonder how the fuck someone got murdered.

I went to Pax Unplugged last year and got to play an early access game called Tulip Bubble which is probably the most beautiful game I've ever played. Going again this year and can't wait.

        How about yourself?

Recently, my wife and I have been playing Time Stories -- just the two of us. It's annoying that you have to buy a new deck for new scenarios, but the game mechanics are fun. We also love playing Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert when it's just the two of us looking for something to play.

Have you heard of Ex Libris? I saw a "let's play" video of that one recently and it looked kinda fun and different than stuff we're used to playing.

Also, not related to board games, but have you ever done Escape Rooms? Just thought as a board game fan you might enjoy those. We happen to live in a city that has dozens of them, but I know more companies are popping up all over the country.

I'm a software developer/part time student (finishing my bachelors, as I got hired and dropped out during my second year). Currently working devops for a fortune 500 you've probably never heard of unless you're in the ERP business. You also probably hate our software. Come talk to me about Docker and Linux and stuff.

I listen to metal (love me some good folk metal and power metal), am a craft-beer connoisseur, and used to play some videogames professionally/semi-pro (specifically WoW, Quake 3, and a bit of TF2). Also do hiking, camping, kayaking, all that fun stuff.

I'm looking for a new home on the internet, so I can have a place to both feel superior to other people who can't keep their cool while arguing and spew my acidic vitriol when I feel like I'm right. Hi, I'm designer, indeed a designer. (Filmmaker and communication designer.)
But I am not interested in commercial advertising, which communication designers would usually go on to do. Seemed like there are giant real-world problems that call for well-designed communication and so I'm speaking with NGOs and researchers to build a bridge between the worlds of "reaching the masses" and "discovering how some big problems work/what to do". This would become an agency/network for communication about things like all kinds of oppression and unnecessary suffering, flaws in the political system, and ecological economy. I read Current Affairs magazine, LessWrong, books, and sometimes SlateStarCodex. (Say hi if these ring a bell! I don't agree with everything from all of these, of course.)

On Reddit, I'd been mostly lurking for three years or so. What got me here: The comment about adblockers finding next to nothing on this site! Really nice to see this happening. Hopefully this will turn out a well-kept garden, admin behaviour so far is promising. :)

Hi, I'm jerbear64. I'm interested in programming, Linux, music, music production, system hacking/homebrew, video games, and just tech in general.

I am an admin on the Binding of Isaac Discord server, and owner of the Linux Gaming Discord server, both of which are partnered.

I joined Tildes because Reddit at this point is too large and isn't nearly as inviting as it used to be, and (similarly to Digg) the site is trying to become something it isn't. I'd like for Tildes to be a smaller, more tightly woven community, free from the laughable practices and privacy policy of Reddit.

I'm currently playing through Overload, the spiritual successor of the Descent series, and it's nothing short of fantastic. I also continually come back to Freespace 2 and The Binding of Isaac- the former because of the plentiful good user-made campaigns, and the latter because despite all its flaws, I can't help but come back to it.

Hi everyone, I'm @SaucedButLeaking! I saw a thread on /r/TrueReddit about a new alternative and am really excited about this ship onto which I appear to be jumping. I'm a systems administrator by trade, and have a Bachelor's degree in English Literature (with a minor in poetry). I consider myself something of a renaissance man; I tend to flit from interesting topic to interesting topic, learning a little bit about everything. The overlap of skills is fascinating to me, and I find that pursuing these interests often leads to improvements elsewhere.

My name comes from a love of spoonerisms and Magic: the Gathering

I do have my own hive. I'm planning to get a second one because it is useful to be able to swap between hives if something goes wrong in one of them (eg. not enough honey in one hive to get the bees through the winter or if one hive loses its queen and you need to re-queen it).

In a poor year, a hive around here will typically produce about 20kg of honey. In a good year, anywhere between 40-60kg of honey.

Lots of people beekeep in cities by putting a hive in the back yard. Bees actually do pretty well in cities because of the amount of flowers that people tend to plant.

And just in case this is of interest to you, it takes about 1.5-2kg of honey to brew a gallon of mead! :-)

Hi! I'm @MrGabeFonseca and I made my way over here for many of the same reasons most of you did, so I won't bore you with that.

I'm 37, married, and currently working as a TV writer living in Los Angeles. I've written for a handful of TV dramas (that you've almost certainly never watched) and I love all kinds of movies, books and TV shows. I'm a huge NBA fan (Go Spurs!), lover of music (especially hip-hop) and of Broadway musicals. Never been a huge gamer... unless we're talking about old Sierra adventure games from the late 80s/early 90s!

Oh, and I'm also obsessed with cereal! I collect cereal boxes and have a YouTube channel called Cereal Time TV where I talk about old cereals and share boxes from my extensive collection.

Excited to be included in this new burgeoning community!
