Hey there, I’m an uncle to a soon to be 15 year old niece who recently got into sewing and has a starter sewing machine. (Hope it’s ok that I post here!)
I want to get her something for her birthday next weekend that has to do with sewing or similar since that’s what she’s expressed interest in. She’s never really had hobbies before but seems genuinely interested in modifying clothes and up-cycling (I think that’s the term) thrift finds.
Can someone help me with ideas on what I could get her? She is relatively new to things and she lives in Texas (US).
I’m ok spending up to $150. Could go higher as I’ll just split costs with her dad or grandparents if the gift is excellent.
Went on a guys trip to Johnsons Shut-Ins the last week. Go ahead and Google what happened there last night. I don't really know the point of posting this here but I feel like sharing.
It started raining around 11pm. The tents held up fine for a while.
I remember waking up at one point to hard rain. I checked the tent but things seemed fine. That was probably about midnight or 1am. Around 2am I woke up cause something felt wrong. The tent was moving and shaking.
I opened the door and saw chaos. It was like looking at the sea in a storm, and I was being carried off by the rushing water. We were swept into a shelter, where I was able to find footing to grab my kid (I was telling "GET UP, GET UP NOW" the whole time) and toss him onto a table out of the water.
I managed to grab quite a bit from the tent and toss it on too and then wedge the tent between two trees.
I then saw the other tent from my group float past. I couldn't help them.
My kid is crying, a torrent of rising water is at my feet, and I spotted that the bathroom shelter nearby was higher up. I grabbed my kid and had to fight my way through the raging water worrying I'd drop him with any misstep. I made it across and we were the first ones there.
Slowly others came. First my FIL and then other campers tricked in. We didn't know what had happened to my bil or my nephew, just they they'd been swept away. My FIL had been sucked out of the tent when he opened the door.
Another family we could hear yelling across the water. A father and son stuck in the trees. They showed up later at the shelter, apparently the son had been pulled away from his dad but wedged on a tree and was able to escape. The dad went back to find the rest of the family. They were all ok.
A few hours later, my bil and his son showed up. They'd been pinned by the current to the trees for at least 2 hours. Hypothermic and exhausted, but safe.
Dawn came and the rain stopped. We gathered what ever else we could find and then left through flooded roads.
My current headphones (Philips TAH8506) are pretty worn out from daily use and recently a bit of plastic on the side cracked, so I figured it'd be a good time to get new ones. Since I know very little about literally any audio hardware it seems a good idea to ask here. Things I'm generally looking for:
I'd also appreciate general pointers regarding which brands provide good quality at a decent price to make searching easier. Thanks in advance for any answers!

Title, frankly. I’m looking for an old stock Humane Ai Pin (that stupid clothes pin gadget so bad it sunk the entire company that made it and then had the remaining employees move to the HP printer division, frankly a fate worse than death) to play around with. I recently learned that the sticker on the back covers four pins, which just expose standard USB, and it’s an Android device so in theory, it’s hackable.
I wanna try turning it into something more useful. It was such a cool little piece of hardware, although the software, pitch, whole idea really was of course threadbare to garbage. I guess I am still romanticising the Star Trek com badge experience.
Willing to pay up to 200 USD, excluding shipping to either the EU or continental US, whichever’s more convenient. Sorry if requests like this aren’t allowed, but I’m kinda drawing a blank. Even emailed the guy who designed it, but he doesn’t have any either.
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
What are you reading currently? Fiction or non-fiction or poetry, any genre, any language! Tell us what you're reading, and talk about it a bit.
Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like fourth of july, mark zuckerberg and viewership. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was nosey.
But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!
This is a recurring post to discuss programming or other technical projects that we've been working on. Tell us about one of your recent projects, either at work or personal projects. What's interesting about it? Are you having trouble with anything?
Goooood morning dear users, humans, non-humans, and things.
I write to you all because I recently thought of asking for some help for art criticism and general feedback on one of my latest pieces that I have created. To my background, I am currently studying in my last year of photography, and I am currently, or rather should be, writing and designing my bachelor project, but here we are doing everything except working on my project.
I saw the recent post about abstract art and that not all people hate it and many people are either interested in art or even like it. I, myself like art. I sometimes even try to create some art myself, even though it sounds just so performative when I say that but that is another topic all together.
So I discussed this with another user on this site in direct messages and they suggested that I could make a post on tildes (here) and show my art and ask for feedback, criticism and maybe even discuss it in some way.
Now I really liked that suggestions. In my past I am fortunate enough to participate in some exhibitions. Which would most likely be the best way to display your art. Sadly this is currently not really feasable and I also don't know if this art would be even fitting.
This project is still ongoing and currently has 2 pieces. I once shared one of the pictures back in winter I think not sure brain empty and stuff
I took polaroids with my RZ67 Zinstax of different cracks on the floor on the wall or just anywhere in the city. My idea was to display sort of these "scars" or blemishes of the city just as a person would when they have an accident or get surgery for something.
Here are the 2 unstitched polaroids and a test I did
I tried singular thread and also embroidery thread. When I tried the single thread it was really tough to get it tense and also that it would look good. This is why I tried embroidery thread. Embroidery thread is basically 6 individual threads in one. It stood out much nicer in real life and also was a lot easier to tighten and overall looked way better.
I tried to connect these 2 Polaroids but still wanted to respect the borders of the polaroid. Also in those 2 Polaroid there is a slight color gradient from the top left which the concrete is the lightest towards the bottom right where it's the darkest.
It might look like they were shoot in the same place but they were not.
Also the definition of gash:
a strong sweeping cut made with a sharp instrument
It is a type of wound or type of injury.
These pictures again were made with my RZ67 with the Zinsstax back.
Here are the raw and some tests I made with a spare polaroid.
To the Gallery
I really wanted to get a medical or a surgical look with the lighting and that's why I choose color polaroids. I set up some lights which I could control the color temperature and I set it to I think 5000 K which is very neutral light.
I also wanted the light to kind of look like flash. Like one of those photographers that take pictures of the crime scene. Kind of that was the vibe I was going for.
When I first sewn into the polaroids I really struggled with not bending the polaroid too much while punching through with the needle. I fixed this with an awl. I tried different size of gaps and I also tested how many threads I wanted to use. In the gallery you can see the test I created and in the lower stitch the gap was too narow and I also used the 6 threads. Then I spaced it more apart and only used 3 threads. I liked the threads much more but the gaps were too wide. So I had to do basically a middle ground with the gaps and kept it at 3 threads.
For the stitch I used a chain stitch. I wanted it to look like the extremities were tied up and that was the ideal stitch for me.
I want to signal to the viewer that this perso is tied to something or as I mentioned tied up. I also aligned the images this way because it can almost look like these are either multiple people or someone is hanging upside down or they were cut up in half.
Definition bound:
something that limits or restraints.
I really liked creating these and also writing this post. Thank you for reading this or even looking at the images.
This little exercise is reminding me of what we used to do in class. Criticize each other's work, which I always really enjoyed. And I do miss. So maybe if someone else wants their work to be criticized, please let me know; I will gladly take a look at some other artworks or work of some other people. Potentially this could even be a scheduled post if enough demand is here and available.
Also if you think you don't have enough knowledge about the medium or the technique, THAT IS NOT IMPORTANT.
Feedback and criticism is always valuable you may see something from a entirely different point of view that I or "we" have never considered. ˙ᵕ˙
If you need further clarification or have further questions, just ask. ˙ᵕ˙ I won't bite I think unless you want me to*
So, thanks so much for reading this and I wish you a nice day.
Anways that's all
Best regards,
your neighborhood creature
We used this question as an icebreaker in my church group, and it was interesting seeing what people thought they used compared to what they actually used.
Did you guess correctly?
Anything surprise you about which apps you used the most/how much time you spent on them?
I guessed Chrome, YouTube, and my ereader app, and got them right. But I also tend to see those same three apps each week through the weekly health report and figured it would be those.
So last night at around 11pm, my partner and I ended up with an European goldfinch - most likely a fledgling - sitting on our balcony, backed into a corner and in a total state of shock. My theory is that it couldn't fly properly, and hit the floor hard enough to cause a serious concussion, then tried to stay as safe as it could while it recovered.
We had zero idea how to handle the situation, and it was too late to call anyone, so we heeded the internet's advice and set up a safe shelter for it - a shoebox with some holes punched into it and a towel laid down, which we took inside and placed in a dim, quiet place, in hopes the bird was just lightly concussed and would be able to sleep it off.
That wasn't the case - in the morning we found the bird awake, huddled in the corner of the box, puffed up and unresponsive. I took the box outside next to a tree where some sparrows usually love to sit, and lifted the lid. After a few minutes it started looking around, but would not move from the corner of the box at all. I waited for 10 more minutes to see if it would try anything, and saw that it had no plans of leaving the box, so I covered it back up and took it back inside.
Plan B was to seek professional help immediately, and that's what I tried to do.
However, it turns out the Romanian government has no resources to rescue and treat injured wildlife. Unless it's large-scale animal abuse or environmental damage, there is no one to call.
So I turned to the NGOs and volunteer groups. I reached out to all the resources available in my area, hoping someone would have the time, capacity and desire to take the poor bird in and give it the help it desperately needed.
One doctor was unfortunately out of the country, and his clinic didn't have capacity to help, especially in his absence. A second doctor never returned my call or responded to my message.
I reached out to the emergency number of a wildlife rehabilitation center, and heard nothing for hours. I called a different center, and got a response, but their only contact in my area was the doctor that is currently out of the country; their center was 3 hours away by train, too stressful for both me and the bird. I called a veterinary clinic, and got a quote for ~25 euro, for a consultation with a spot at 2pm.
I then finally got an answer from the first rehab center, who asked me to try to take the bird outside again. However, at 1:30pm I checked the box, trying to follow the instructions I was given, and I was met with a bird that unfortunately passed away.
It really sucks - I tried to help this poor critter but there just aren't sufficient resources; wildlife is the least of the government's priorities, and NGOs by their nature are never sufficiently staffed nor have the funds and capacity to sustain the demand. Especially with the heatwaves hitting Europe, I'm sure my bird wasn't the only one having accidents this week.
Nobody is at fault here - it just was the wrong timing for everyone involved - but I can't help but feel guilty anyway.
I don't even know what the point of this post is besides to complain, and I guess to grieve a tiny soul that deserved more. Maybe we should all take a moment and appreciate the birds chirping outside. They're beautiful, and we should protect them as much as we can.
Rest in peace, little bird.

What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
Yesterday I saw a mention somewhere online a story, maybe a book, maybe a short story. It was:
Does anyone know what this is? I tried search, but search is worthless nowadays.
