Introduction

The Legend of Zelda series celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, and A Link to the Past will have its 35th later this year.

So cast your mind back and let me set the mood. Picture this: the year is 1992 and you're a middle school kid who has saved up enough chore and birthday money to finally get your first new game for the SNES (the one you worked so many chores to save up for when your parents finally allowed you to have a console like the other kids you were so envious of.) You've beaten the Super Mario World game your SNES came with and you're definitely ready for something else.

You're sitting in the back seat of the car as your mother drives you home from the store, holding the box for A Link to the Past in your little hands. You open it up and find a cartridge (of course!). You carefully set that aside.

Next up, there's a detailed manual, because of course nearly all games back then came with some kind of little manual of some kind, or at the very least an instruction pamphlet. You read it cover to cover, because you're that kind of kid.

In the box you also find a little hint pamphlet sealed shut with a bit of adhesive. Tempting, but you want to challenge yourself to get as far as you can before peeking. (You give in a few days later.)

Finally, the ride back from the mall is done and you race downstairs to the den, pop the cartridge into the top of your SNES, and turn everything on. You're greeted with a Triforce in 3D that spins and assembles itself (3D on a console? Witchcraft!), while a short harp arpeggio plays:

Then the title screen, a sword drop, and a pictaresque castle, moat, and mountains behind them while a fanfare plays:

A moment later, the intro prologue begins giving the back story as tense chords play. Then, the now-famous fairy fountain theme plays as you name your game save ("Link", of course!) and so the game begins. The mood is set as you step outside your house into a storm with a layer of splashing rain, flickering lightning (Wow! Amazing graphics!), crashing thunder and a reprise of the tense music. You binge through the first dungeon or two that day.

It's nearly summer, but school isn't done yet. So each day as soon as you get home from middle school, you can't wait to race down to the shade and the cool relief of the basement den to conquer the next dungeon, get the cool new piece of equipment and see what new areas of the game it opens. (Homework? Homework can wait!) That's the rhythm: one day, one dungeon, just an hour or two a day, until you get to the end.

That's how I first played it and why this game is so special to me. :-)

For First Time Players

Don't be afraid to check the manual and hint book that I linked above. Yes, they spoil things a bit, especially the hint book. But the game shipped with them and they were part of the original experience. And if you pace yourself to one dungeon a day, you should easily get through the game by mid-month. It's not a terribly long game, all told.

I think you're in for a treat, and I look forward to hearing your experience with the game, as seen fresh through 2026 eyes.

For Experienced Players

There's a popular randomizer for the game, complete with a Reddit community.. I've never tried it before, but as I've played the vanilla game many times, CGA seems like a fun excuse to finally try the randomizer.

I'll be using this seed if you'd like to join me on it. It uses the "Beginner" preset which seems a good place to start with the randomizer, but with the "Hints" turned on (which I understand means that the telepathic tiles in the dungeons are changed to tell you where some things are). I'm eager to see what insanity the chaos produces.

Planning a trip to Japan fall 2027 or spring 2028. Japan seems to be a place I can spend my entire life savings in, fill three warehouses, and still come away with want. So here's a different question than the usual: if I don't care about Instagram sightseeing or the latest fashion trends or Michelin star restaurants, what are some crazy cheap things to do or places to stay?

Old fahsioned and dingy is fine, anything above "downright dangerous" is completely okay. We could do one fancy pants Ryokan and one cheap one if the cultural difference in expenses are worthwhile, otherwise cheap cheap cheap please.

I am most interested in hands on traditional crafts making workshops or experiences, like touring wagashi kitchens, basket weaving, leather workers, fibre and paper arts, wood crafting, kintsugi pottery repairs etc.

Kaga Traditional Craft Village Yunokuni no Mori, Komatsu -- Ishikawa Prefecture : this has been recommended to me, would love reviews and other recommendations. Kyoto has a lot of English workshops: are there cheaper ones outside?

BOOK OFF chains and Mega Donki for cheap, used consumer goods? Osaka for used kimono? Where do people get rid of their unwanted traditional arts and art supplies? Kyoto has a bunch of flea markets: still good spot or tourist junk I can get for much less elsewhere?

Any arcades that take an entry fee and then it's all you can play? (Asking because I super suck at games but I love them, and Japan has the whackiest arcade games)

I'd be perfectly happy to eat konbini & ramen & gyudon & cheap foods for the entire time. What other kinds of food are cheap? (I'd also do one or two seafood meals for sure but spending money = easy to find reviews)

I want to hear all the cheap things about Japan :) my goal will be to (1) avoid the over tourism spots and be less of a nuisance for locals (2) experience things (3) save all the money for the end of the trip to see Akihabara, spend it all on gunpla, anime and gaming goods.....

Maybe worth mentioning I am trying to learn as much Japanese as possible in a year, with background in Chinese language and college first year level Japanese. Language tips also welcome.

I've been thinking about getting into cast iron cooking. I need a new skillet, and I've seen recommendations for cast iron, but some things seem daunting:

• Seasoning. How bad is it really? Did you purchase a pre-seasoned pan and just cook with it? Do you re-season occasionally? How often? What oil do you use? What is your process?
• Cleaning. How do you clean your skillet? Soap and water? How do you know when you are done cleaning? What materials do you use?
• Unknowns. What did you not know until you started cooking with cast iron? Any surprise benefits/costs?

Have any of you used cast iron, then returned to Teflon or stainless steel after being disappointed in the experience? What are the biggest differences between cooking with cast iron and other materials?

Considering that non-stick manufacturing poses environmental risks, and iron may provide a net positive effect for folks needing more iron in their diet, it seems like this is a natural way to go.

I'm curious about people's experiences with Opera GX, particularly because it seems to be largely absent from broader discussions about web browsers despite being probably one of the most advertised online.

I tried it for a while, but I didn't find that it performed noticeably better than other browsers. My main impression was that it felt somewhat clunky, and that many of its more unusual settings and customization options added complexity without improving the actual browsing experience. I can understand the appeal of its visual style and gaming-oriented branding, but in practice, those features mostly felt unnecessary to me.

I've used Firefox for the past couple of years and have been happy with both its performance and general usability. More recently, I've started using DuckDuckGo's app on my phone, and I'm considering trying the desktop version as well.

For people who use Opera GX regularly, what does it offer that keeps you using it? Are there features that become more useful over time, or is its appeal mainly the interface and customization?

I'm also interested in why it rarely appears in browser recommendations or comparisons. Is that because of technical concerns, Opera's reputation, privacy considerations, or simply because it occupies a fairly specific niche?

What happened?

On August 6th, 2026 at 9am Pacific Time, Metabase notified us of a breach of their systems with the following email message:

On Monday, August 3, we discovered that Metabase Cloud was attacked by someone utilizing an unknown (“0-day”) security vulnerability in versions 1.58 and above. We immediately blocked the endpoints used for the attack, then quickly identified and patched the vulnerability. We notified law enforcement, and we have engaged with a third party forensics firm to conduct an independent investigation.

Your instance of Metabase was vulnerable to this 0-day. Therefore, to protect your company, we recommend you:

Rotate the credentials for every database connected to your instance; and

Review the admin accounts on your instance and remove anything you don't recognize.

We also discovered that the attacker was able to gain access to your instance. We created a report on the actions we believe the attacker took on your instance, which includes log files, and which you can get from the Metabase Store at [removed url].

(If you do not have access to the Metabase Store, are having issues accessing the report, or do not want to click on a link in an unexpected email, you can log into your instance directly and reach us at Help > Get help in the grid menu in the upper right hand corner. We'll confirm this message is from us and email you the report.)

I'm looking to replace my current mechanical keyboard which has a few problems. If anyone has recommendations I would appreciate it.

Here is what I'm looking for:

• Mechanical switches
• USB C and bluetooth.
• Smaller size (no keypad)
• Clicky but not too loud. I think I currently have "brown" switches which are good.
• Backlit (but not colorful unless I'm able to set it to something muted or single-colored)
• Works with mac, pc, linux, and maybe tablets

I don't care very much if there is a battery in the unit as long as it can switch to bluetooth while plugged into usb.

I went to mechanicalkeyboards.com and looked around and got a bit overwhelmed. Looks like the prices are mostly under $200 which would be ok.

What went wrong with my current keyboard:
It's an EPOMAKER TH80 pro. The size is good, the features are good, and the keyboard feel is good. But the battery went dead so it has to be plugged in all of the time, and several of the keys get double presses at random so I have to backspace a lot.

I could still turn it on for now but there's a warning that it's no longer supported. I have ADHD and I can't live without cosmetic filtering. (I'm not tech-oriented enough to know if that's the right term for it. I mean the ability to point at elements on a page and say "take this off for me".)

I use the function to remove YouTube shorts, recommendations, the block that nudges me to get Premium and probably a gazillion other bells and whistles that I've already forgotten about. I wouldn't use YT at all if I couldn't do this. Same deal for Reddit.

I also use it to remove moving graphics and other things on some web stores that break my focus. I wouldn't be able to get through my workday without that option. I have to source countless small items for my business from sites that are already complex enough to navigate without any additional distractions. The site designers likely have no clue how much worse their animated banners etc. make my day. That's okay. They can't take everything and everyone into account at all times. But I must be able to adapt environments to be kinder to my brain if I am to retain my executive function so I can do my job.

Are there other similar options out there that you guys can recommend? Another extension I absolutely have to have is called "You're fired". It removes everything I don't like from my YT feed based on search terms. It's perfect because interacting with the unwanted stuff doesn't seem like a good idea (at least it doesn't remove it from my feed even if it's supposed to). I don't have to interact, just add a search term one single time and it'll be gone for good. That extension wasn't widely available for other browsers last I checked so I'd like to keep using Brave if possible.

He's Canadian and he'll always have the most ridiculous source (see the post title) or the worst, goalpost-moving response ("who said that?" "how?" "well the lady said there was no impact because they just didn't get their $50M payday but they still had all the medicine." "I don't think the number is zero, but it's not what people said it would be.")

I know the easiest answer is just ignore him like most people do. But it is so infuriating when there are hundreds of thousands of people actively dying.
