Oddly all off a sudden, while I was watching a video, my phone started to play the same sound as my PC speakers. It was kinda of cool, like my phone was a second speaker. But it did it automatically. Anyone else see this? I have access to YouTube music now so maybe that's a new feature or something?

edit: My device is Windows 10 PC using regular Chrome and Google Pixel XL (Android P)

Openly published research makes science advance at a wonderful rate. In my experience scientists and researchers support open research in a nearly dogmatic fashion. Personally I am generally for it. However here is my concern.

I believe that humanity is in a terrible race. One of the competitors is the advancement of science, which of course can sometimes be used in a dangerous ways. The other competitor is our society moving towards murder and war becoming obsolete. The science is obvious and needs no examples. Societies move towards the sanctity of life is shown here.

"Violence has been in decline over long stretches of time", says Harvard professor Steven Pinker, "and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species' existence."

Now to get to my point. In the past scientific advancement has created some really scary things. Atomic weapons, bio and chemical warefare, etc. However, those weapons took a lot of people and capital to produce, and had relatively un-scalable effects. Now with open research on advancements like CRISPR, we are nearing a time where in the near future a smart high school biology student with a few thousand dollars and an internet connection will be able to create self-replicating custom viruses that could kill millions. The asymmetric threat has never been greater.

Do you agree with my assessment and concerns?

If so, do you believe that there should be limits on publication of research in certain areas?

Edit: I should have said CRISPR and gene drives. Here is a TED talk on how gene drives can change and entire species, forever.

New devices, new apps, new websites, new tech, all these things get me irrationally excited. Almost like getting a package in the mail...

I’ve read it all my life. Learned to read on it actually and I’ve collected it too. Probably have one of the bigger collections for an average joe. Apparently it’s been rebooted or something. It’s pretty political, like it’s always been, but I hope it doesn’t go under.

So I tried to install sway on my desktop today. This required a lot of fiddling, as I had to pull in bleeding-edge dependencies for the Wayland libraries, and had to build the compositor framework wlroots. Finally however, I had everything compiled and ready to go and....

Proprietary Nvidia drivers are not supported. Use Nouveau.

I had completely forgotten that sway requires open-source Nvidia drivers. So - has anyone had experience using Nouveau? How usable is it from day-to-day? How noticeable is the performance hit when switching from proprietary drivers?

I personally have been getting really into anime the last two years and Akira is by far one of the greatest movies I've seen!

I love the gameplay and overall feel of the game but the online lag is unbearable at times and the lack of local 2P play doesn't help in that regard.

Still, as long as the final game has more stages and some more characters (where is Luigi?) I'll probably buy it to play with the gf.

Each and every hobby has a start. I'm going to learn how to play the piano. For this, I'm planning to buy an electric piano. There's a regular grand piano I have access to, but they come without headphone jacks, and until I get better I want to limit the scope of audible torture to my own ears as much as possible. So, I could do with some of your advice.

This list of requirements is not meant to limit you in your advice, but serves more as a guideline, to give you an idea of what I'm looking for.

Hard requirements:

• Headphone jack
• The sound library must contain at least a 'normal' piano sound and an electric piano sound (the more it sounds like a dirty Rhodes, the better!)
• At least 128 voice-polyphony
• At least 76 keys, but preferably 88

Soft requirements:

• Weighted keys
• Simulated hammer action
• High repetition
• Ebony and ivory key feel (don't like the sensation of smooth plastic)
• MIDI support so I can hook it up to a computer to try out other sound libraries

Completely unnecessary but cool:

• USB port
• Bluetooth compatibility

If you've learned to play the piano, especially as an adult, any advice you may have for me would be more than welcome, too.

So I'm a teen and am starting a new school next year. I get a 12 week break so would really like to try and get in shape, mainly to boost self confidence. What types of exercise / diet would people recommend?

I don't think I'd ever get skinny but I'd I could swap out some fat for muscle that would be fantastic!

I discovered this series while browsing something on Netflix Kids with my kids and after finishing the first season I already knew it was going to be one of those jewels that you absolutely love.
Both me and my kids waited with anticipation every new season and now that it's ended I sincerly have that bittersweet feeling of something good that ended but that couldn't have ended better than this.

I strongly recommend everyone to give it a watch, either if you have kids or if you just love animation's movie. It's really something special.

The series is completed (spoilers in this article) as stated previously, several time, by the creator Gulliermo del Toro and this just proves how it was a labour of love instead of a milking machine (looking at you How To Train Your Dragon").

Hi, I am interested in creating a list of essential jazz albums for people who may be beginning to listen to the genre. My basic idea is that each person can contribute one album to the list. This has two caveats: one, you can only contribute once, and two, the album that you contribute cannot already be listed in the previous comments. If we can make this work, I will compile the results after one month based on the ranking of the albums by votes. Let's see what a bunch of ~s can do. I actually heard this one before the orig so this might be a bias for me. But when I finally got around to listening to the orig, it felt empty. Turns out i love those trailing high notes and it wasn't entirely the same feeling without it

This one is super first world, but it would make the transition from Reddit much easier. The vote button is on the far right of the screen even though the rest of the UI and most people naturally gravitate to the left. I am fine with them keeping the old vote button, but they should put a small one on the left side also.

I purchased the Matebook X Pro for 1350 from Microsoft with the student discount.

Build: It is a very sturdy laptop and fits perfectly in a backpack.

Trackpad: It feels just like the MacBook Air.

Keyboard: Great typing. Switches are very similar to the MacBook Air but their noise is lower pitched.

Screen: The screen is great and I love the thin bezels.

Software: No bloat besides the driver manager.

Gaming: People underestimate the mx150. It runs pubg at a playable 40fps at mostly low and a few medium settings and fortnite at 60 FPS

with medium settings. I would never use it a a primary gaming machine, but it would be very useful for lan party’s.

Battery life: average

Dislikes: It can get very loud when gaming.

Overall, It feels like the spiritual successor to my MacBook Air in design and size. It has a fantastic display and build quality and it is priced competitively. If you are willing to pay a premium for build quality and portability then I would definitely get this laptop.

I have never done a Reddit review before so ask any questions that I left out.

A lot of the newer websites and services now offer 2FA so I was wondering if Tildes has any plans to do that? No idea how hard it would be to implement but I feel like that would be a welcome addition for many people.

I'd also be happy to hear people's thoughts on this an if you guys think the website actually needs this. In my mind more security is always better than less security.

So I've nearly finished my exams and am going to have a bunch of free time soon. I want to try and learn to do some electronics stuff. I already have an Arduino and Pi and have done the basic flashing lights projects, but want to try something a bit more interesting (but not too expensive either)

I've been using ~ on mobile to try it out, and although it's great, there's one major inconvenience.

If I'm reading through a long comment, I want to instintively collapse it so it won't distract me. But on mobile, I have to scroll a long way up to do that. It's even worse with comment chains.

Can we have a collapse button at the bottom as well? Or a swipe, like on the Reddit app? Or do we have to wait for the development of the app before mobile users get good UI?
