What fashion trend will you refuse to let die?
For me it's:
Pants below the natural waist. What can I say, I grew up during the Britney Spears' Time.
Long socks with shorts. Also, invisible socks, apparently I just hate crew or 1/4 crew socks.
ADDENDUM.
This popped up in my feed I see that no one has defended capri pants, yet...I like how at some point in society, a "cupped" clothed ass was considered so provocative.
Jeans in general.
Seems that most younger people these days wear sweatpants all the time. I definitely like them for their comfort and they can look pretty good, but I feel like they grip my crotch and put it on display a little more than I'm comfortable with. Plus everything slips out of the pockets.
Jeans are durable, look good, have lots of utility as far as pockets being relatively secure and I'm able to clip my utility knife to them without trouble.
The rant about women's jeans pockets being substandard even when they're relatively good on a standard of women's pants has been deleted because the author lacks the energy to scream at the patriarchy today
I really like jeans, but I do see them worn by college students quite a bit, so I'm not sure they're "out." There are just more options.
Plus their going out jeans usually have at least a waist, briefs, pocket, and ankles on each leg for coverage.
I keep thinking they look like they're wearing pajamas out in public.
I'm with you on the jeans, though. (And I hate shorts; I like my legs covered. My threshold for switching to shorts tends to be around 100 F / 37 C.)
I'm the opposite - shorts all the time whenever it is sufficiently warm. My threshold for switching to shorts tends to be about 37F / 3C.
Same... but cargo/utility shorts specifically in my case, which are my personal "refuse to let die" fashion trend. They're so f'n comfy, and have so much space for storage. I genuinely don't understand why anyone wears any other types of shorts, especially shorts that are super tight and/or don't even have a large enough pocket to store a smart phone in.
Cargo shorts are great, though I have simplified most of my everyday carrying to wallet, phone, knife, keys, pen, and those fit in "regular" shorts well enough for me, so I have mostly moved to black cotton sportswear.
I love that I need 1 tiny key and my phone does and unlocks everything else. The future is truly now baby!
Smart watches that can send and receive messages and calls, and pay for stuff, are pretty good — but I’m waiting for the day of the tiny chip embedded into my hand directly so I can literally never accidentally leave it behind.
Unfortunately at the moment there are two many big tech actors that each individually want to be the only company you ever work with, so a universal chip that’s designed with no backdoors or data collection nonsense that doesn’t make you more vulnerable to malicious actors and/or cops is probably not in this particular cyberpunk timeline. Still, I can dream...
I have always purchased men's jeans because the pockets are so much bigger. I can never find a pair of women's pants with pockets deep enough for my comfort.
I can't remember if this is actually founded in reality, but people at least posit that women's clothes don't have pockets because of Big Purse lol. There is a podcast episode, I think, about how pockets got nerfed for women. I can dig it up if you're interested in it.
Culturally it's also because they wanted to keep women in this "helpless" and useless dainty zone.
I would love to see someone do a map infograph on "the switch", because depending on where you live, your thresholds are totally different.
After living in a very cold climate with limited summers, I will wear shorts and no jacket until the frost-bite warnings come out. But then when Spring comes around, I'm super hesitant to de-winterify my house or clothing, because, the weather is fickle.
TBH, I would wear shorts at any given time if it were societally appropriate. MY LEGS NEED TO BE FREE. Unscientifically, I also don't like sleeping in a tucked in bed, and I bet those are related.
Ooh I also don't like tucked in beds, my legs also need to be free, socks are feet prisons. I think we are doing science right now, this is shaping up to be a study.
Can confirm quite a few are actually wearing pajamas in public. And you know what? I can vibe with that. Normalize being comfy!
But jeans can't quite be matched in terms of general daily durability and utility.
We like to do multi day sessions of unsleeping, and so now we've multiple pairs of comfies (aka swetapants aka joggers (UK)) for when we're just vibing together come day 2. At first I mocked them, but now I'm fully aboard and find myself venturing into the wild in such garments.
Anything nonformal and non-potentially romantic is now a comfies situation. Life is comfy. Life is good.
Unsleeping?
Not going to bed and just continually socialising for a few days. Not, like, deliberately, but just never feeling like it's quite time to call it.
lol I almost always wear pajama pants in public, they're so comfy and they actually have pockets! (sometimes anyway) I don't really own non-PJ pants anymore except for a couple pairs that are nicer, but I wouldn't wear those on a normal outing
I've noticed that there can be a huge difference in quality between different sweat pants. Like some are absolutely terrible and I agree with everything you said, but others are genuinely a lot nicer, fit better, feel way more comfortable, and have decent pockets (at least the men's ones do). The thickness of the fabric too can vary wildly. Some will be almost paper-thin while others are way heavier.
Are they though? I'm dummy thicc and I kill all my jeans in just a few weeks because the part from the middle of my thighs all the way to my crotch gets massive holes from friction. Sweatpants last me a lot longer and take a lot of abuse for me, even the really cheap 4-5 euro ones from crapshacks like pepco or chinese wholesale stores.
There's probably some personal variation involved depending on the cut/brand of jeans and your specific body shape. My jeans definitely last longer than my sweatpants, but I also buy better brands of jeans than I do sweatpants. I suspect it's a ymmv type of thing.
The notion that jeans is informal wear is alien to most Brazilians. There are very few professions and social gatherings which do not allow for jeans. Jeans are nowhere near dying here!
A few things:
and bindtocontrolyour entire being1.1. I am not religious, nor am I spiritual in any standard sense (I don't even believe in souls or consciousness), but I do believe the mental power of a giant rock or piece of metal on your person is a comforting, empowering, and efficient mental protector, something that keeps us grounded to the world/universe/reality in a way. I've been wearing a rather large volcanic rock hanging from my neck with minimal interruptions since I was about fourteen (babies love to gnaw on it, especially when they are frustrated, so parents have always loved me!). No idea where I got it. Just appeared in my inventory one day.
I love wearing Cabana shirts. Cabana shirts and T-shirts with something nerdy on them are about 99% of my wardrobe.
The wardrobe from Jackal has some nice throwbacks to the film -- but I absolutely think a little neck kerchief is an excellent look -- https://i.imgur.com/2XRiLAP.png
This is how everyone in Nashville dresses. Just add a hat.
love it. simple and functional.
Hard to call this a trend that you "refuse to let die" when it's only getting more and more popular for men to wear jewelry
All the more reason to make sure this trend stays alive and healthy! There are definitely overly conservative people who'll push back against male jewelry for being either too feminine, or too punk/alternative. So this will likely be an ongoing battle for years to come.
Considering I got my ear first pierced when I was eight, and stuck with it, as a 'male', with long hair, in the deep south, when even wearing shorts was considered 'metrosexual' as a neg. It's definitely a trend that was not always been acceptable, my therapist can tell you that much lol, and the stigma is still certainly there. Of the people I work with, I can't think of a single one with pierced ears who are presenting masc.
Might be more of a thing now, but even now men typically 'only' wear any ring if they are married, and that's about it. And necklaces, are surprisingly, not common and still looked down on for some reason. So much so there was even a fairly popular viral article from last month about it - "I’m scared to be the kind of man who wears a necklace", its an unsaid thing. It's weird, but its there. It's breaking, thankfully.
Bracelets as well, are more acceptable, but still only to an extend, they have to be minimal, not super flashy, and usually metal, anything else and you will be looked at as a vagabond, hippy wannabe, or a religious
nutdomestic missionary. So yeah, as the styles ebbs and flows, I'm not going to let it die, they kind of feel like the gauntlets, armbands, or bracelets of power (related, interesting read: Magical Accessory trope)
Yeah, I know that it wasn't widely accepted even fairly recently, but as a zoomer with a pierced ear and rings, I can definitely say that it's getting more popular! People still assume I'm gay sometimes, but hey, I've been called gay for worse reasons (such as knowing what periods are), and that mostly happened in other countries, not where I live. I've straight up walked around with Hello Kitty necklaces and no one cared because stuff like that is somewhat common among younger males, at least where I live.
It may be a very different situation in the US though, where most young men's idea of peak fashion consists of basketball shorts and high top sneakers.
You're going to have to peel the skinny jeans off of my corpse, and not just because I'm getting older and fatter.
I have many follow-up questions, if you'll indulge me.
Please share some of your collections of dark monotone tye dyes.
In general I'd be interested to see your collections outside of tie die as well, of any style, so long as they play with the themes of greyscale.
Agree with you on skinny jeans and accessorizing for men. Men/masc are kind of locked out of expression beyond accessories, so I'd like to keep some attention on this area. However, I ebb and flow between hating Wrist JunkTM or liking it.
Bandanas are in right now?
Amulets, this touches on something I have been contemplating for a while. What, in your opinion, are some of the heaviest feeling objects one can adorn the body with?
PS. Love the usage of "appeared in my inventory" lol
I don't have any personal photos, but I tend to make either my own tye (tie? actually that makes more sense ig) dye, or more recently (because my time, and skills, are not exactly great) I have been buying way too many variations from Jakes Tie Dye, great quality, wonderful service, just a single dude making various colors of whimsy. Everything is made when ordered so you can specialize or customize without any upcharge either, dude just really _loves_and knows his tye/tie dye.
Quick tip: If you order them from his Etsy shop, he adds a 20% off discount on the entire order if you order more than one, they aren't "cheap" but they are handmade and durable. I also prefer the non-soft option, if only because it is a denser/heavier cotton blend).
This one is my favorite, although it's green, I still wear this as much as I reasonably can: The Alien Invasion
Here are a few that I own, personally

If you are interested in more 'minimal' tie dye-ish styles, but not so obvious, look into dark acid wash tees, they are usually more of a heathered look, just small splatters of dye/acid.
Of my non-tie dye or black shirts, I usually just wear a dark charcoal heathered grey long tshirts, usually the ones found at tractor supply (their brand is 'Blue Mountain'), or the similar. Fits my ridiculous wide shoulders and long torso, cheap and replaceable when needed. Holds up well, slim fit by default, comfortable and soft. Not black, but more charcoal grey, enough to be dark, match everything, and be monochromatically dark.
I also tend to always wear a second layer, usually polyester as I have a very furry dog and pet hair is a major concern of mine at all times, and high % polyester blends are the best to reduce them from sticking (and to cover any on the cotton shirts that are near impossible to totally de-fuzz), so I am particularly fond of wearing dress shirts made by Mizzen + Main as they are really great quality, fit my insanely wide shoulders, and I wear them more as jackets entirely open on most days, plus never need to iron them, and you can wear them multiple days without wrinkles (not that I do.... often). The blacks I've had for three years have never faded and stay in great condition. I only buy them second-hand as new they are $110+, but you can pick them up in perfect condition on sites like poshmark for $15-25 a piece. I have various styles, including one of microchips (which is great for work events, as I am a roboticist and hardware hacker so its pretty apt), but their blacks are great.
For shoes I am a huge fan of Thursday Boots, higher quality leather (real! not plastic "vegan") and make, at ridiculously low prices for the value. These have lasted me well for three years of daily wear and tear, and just recently bought a pair of their version of high-top leather sneakers, as I love converse, but they always fall apart on me, and their leather editions are decent but certainly not quality in any sense for the price. So, last month I bought those from them as well, and they are my favorite shoes at the moment. White soles, black uppers.
For jackets, I either wear the aforementioned dress shirts as a jacket, some Woolrich 'shackets' (green, or grey) but more recently, I snagged a FigsPRO Lab Jacket for $50 from their site, and its become perhaps my favorite jacket of all time, even surpassing the nostalgia of that one jacket I briefly had before a partner in high school (all those years ago) stole from me, never to be seen again.
The FigsPro Lab Jacket is a Polyester/Nylon blend iirc, light, but warm in the cold, cool in the heat, black, 10 pockets all over, a 'glasses' pocket that also doubles as a microfiber cloth when pulled inside out. It's a very 'industrial' and utilitarian chore jacket. Made for doctors, nurses, lab techs, so no staining, easy to clean, all liquids bounce off it, and is high quality. Sort of a high quality windbreaker that doesn't scream neon striped 'windbreakers' of yesteryear. They still have it on sale actually. I already own one of a few pairs of their scrub joggers for the gym, so good.
Figs are basically the 'go to' style brand for the medical industry who wants scrubs and jackets for the daily grind and long stressful hours, but still let you look fresh w/ great quality - unlike the ones the hospital tends to give you.
Re: Jewelry: I have a preference towards minimalist jewelry, mostly silver, minimal engravings or designs. I wear two on my right hand, and a silver ring with a black textured band on the right. I get asked where/how much they were all the time, but I can't remember and also they were like $5 a piece, except for one of the silver rings, which has my organizations motto engraved on the inside, which was less than $30, so still cheap. I also have had my ear pieced since I was about eight years old, but recently had my second ear done. So two silver minimalist small hoops, one in each lobe. Which is surprisingly not common of a choice, especially for a dude, to not go all out when they pierce their ears and have multiple piercings or go the route of gauges.
I wear an old school silver casio watch, since I can't stand smart-watches (which is funny considering I am uber-techy). It stands out, it works, and I always dreamed of having one as a kid. Also cheap, so I snagged it a few years ago for like $40. If it ever breaks, you can pick up a new one for about the same so no worries. Sometimes I add a beaded bracelet, but not often, I type/code a lot and they just hurt after some time.
Re: Bandanas: They are very in style and have been growing over the past few years in different ways.
Re: Amulets: Not sure on feeling for the weight, but metal, you could look into medallions, the pure size would allow for the 'feeling' of weight and importance. You could go clocks, but that might be a step too far :-). The one I always go back to is my volcanic rock (which is large, but not heavy, easy to sleep with as its rounded, not anything that digs into the skin when slept on and compressed).
Hope that's enough info, likely too much in all honesty.
Tie dye, as in, tie these clothes up and/or together while we dye them.
Bell bottoms. Not only are they cool, their sweeping motion helps keep the floors clean :) .
Me, reading this thread, clicking on links:
[Trend] is out?! It's been... (looks again)... More than 10 years?!
I may not be thrilled about how y'all choose to dress, but I will defend, to my death, your right to choose how to dress.
As a perpetually out of fashion person, I've been so thrilled by the recent years esp after COVID. I'm seeing bell bottoms and dangerously low rise flairs, I'm seeing ultra high waist and skinny jeans, I'm seeing flipflops with socks and fuzzy boots and Crocs. Young person in a bare midriff power suit ultra mini skirt, walking hand in hand with another young person wearing comfy slacks, fuzzy slipper-shoes and cute tote with stuffy ornament. Folks wearing anime shirts and cat ears and fox tails. Everybody just looking good feeling great about whatever they chose that day, be it ironically or for attention or comfort, that's the best trend for me that I will refuse to let die.
Because of the internet and social media, instead of everyone only wearing what is fashionable/available to fit in, we can find people/materials/items everywhere and anywhere and make your own style without 'feeling' left out or part of an out-group. Emo is back, grunge is back, indie hippy boho hipster chic is back, back tattoos are back, flares are back, skinny jeans are back, oversized is back, sheer is back, bondage-gear as fashion is back, lingerie over clothes are back, shorts+oversized shirts, bell-bottoms, grandpa-core and classic menswear is back, cozycore, random xDDD rawr goth is back, lolita fashion is back, cardigans, bonnets, bandanas, flat caps, flat bills, baseball caps, bows, etc.
All of it, it's all back, all the time. Well, maybe missing some of the industrial cybergoth style, but I think its coming back.
Everyone wants their own style, so they do, its kind of cool.
I don't know if that is true, but I heard the black afro is not as popular in the US as it once was (mine is not as cool as that one in the image, but it's pretty cool).
I will keep mine growing for as long as I can. The afro is strong in Brazil!
On my very unscientific observation, I've seen a lot of younger guys with afro - so not sure if within the rest of the USA that's true but from where I am (NJ), I've seen more than I've had in years.
Skinny jeans. 😤
Leggings as pants. I'm short so most shirts are long on me if they're actually my size, so I will wear my leggings as pants as I please.
Also, no-show socks. I will wear no show socks until the day I die. if I'm wearing long pants, long socks are fine, but omg I personally can't deal with my socks showing. I love that the youths are cool with it, but for me personally, no show all the way.
No show socks are the only way I can stand to even wear the things. Idk if I have weirdly shaped calves or walk in an odd way, but I cannot wear any other style of sock without them ending up bunched around my ankles and slipping lower in my shoes. Why people want shorter shorts and socks up to their knees I will never understand, I guess I'm just an old Millennial about these things.
Time to bring the mullet back. :-)
They kinda already are back... a lot of young people and celebs (esp sports stars) seem to be rocking mullets these days. Not the classic mullet, but the more modern mullet with faded sides.
The mullet is really, officially, super duper dead. I had a public speaking class in college and I eulogized it. Sorry.
They had a good run!
(they're also totally back, so, /s)
mullets are absolutely back. North America is late to the game, but you can definitely roll with one.
It already came back and (largely) went during the last few years :-)
In places with a hockey culture, it never really dies. The virus lays dormant.
I've seen a decent number of people recently with mullets, both young and old
Everyone here saying mullets are back are just people that still stubbornly think it never left. But they're wrong.
Mullets aren't back, and shouldn't come back.
Hats.
I always wear a hat when I go out. Usually a paperboy style cap, but I have a few other hat styles. Have a particularly fancy cloche hat I've worn to some family events recently, I wore a beret to my cousin's wedding, a bright red fedora that I love matching, hats knitted by my grandma... My cousin recently joked about how he may never see the top of my head.
I've got my head in a toboggan from September to June (Wisconsin, babyyyyy, it's mid-40s today). I don't know if it's fashionably in or out, and I consider myself post-fashion anyway.
I've got my goin' out toboggans - whenever I'm in the Big City, I swing through the Men's Wearhouse clearance section. A few years ago I snagged a few decent quality knitted hats for $3 a pop.
My utility toboggans - these Temu Trash headlamp toboggans are pretty damn sweet. When the sun goes down, I've probably got my very useful and highly unfashionable light toboggan on, even in the summer months. I always feel dumb when I wear these instead of my fashionable toboggans into a Slack meeting.
My barn toboggans - if I'm cleaning in the barn or doing any of my other gross chores, I've got my odd hats: my Schwans toboggan, my cultural appropriating rasta weed 420 toboggan, my Packers toboggan with ear flaps, etc.
All in all, it's not helping my bald spot any.
I had no idea what you were on about because I thought a toboggan was a sled but I see there's a regional difference for the word. Personally I still enjoy the vision of you wearing a sled on your head.
I see skinny jeans and wide jeans in the answers. Has anyone tried one skinny leg, one wide leg?
What about jeans with hoops in them so they are skinny side-to-side but wide front-to-back?
Or skinny at the top and wide at the bottom? :-)
I haven't seen a ton about dresses or skirts or other open bodied clothing. I feel like, a skirt or dress on top of leggings or pants would be in that zone lol.
Do backpacks count?
I have been hassled a lot over the years due to often wearing a backpack when going to hang out with friends. Turns out they are just handy, especially if you are generally using a bike or motorcycle.. not to mention my emergency headphones, pens, and battery!
Oh fuck yes! The backpack will have to be pried from my cold dead shoulders.
I will say I mix it up with a fanny pack these days. I could never get messenger bags or any other asymmetric bag to work for me, except for the tote. In general, I like to switch it up for body variety and style reasons.
Bag people are my people. We like to be prepared.
I've become a sling bag convert over the last year. I've done backpacks, messenger bags, and fanny packs. I really enjoy the minimalist feel of a sling bag, especially the ease of moving from front to back.
Wide leg jeans, or wide leg pants in general.
I'm short and I have very strong legs, so if I find pants that fit on the inseam, they're usually far too long for me. Flip side, if the pants are the right length I can seldom lift my legs high enough to go up stairs.
Those are in fashion now. Skinny jeans, as noted elsewhere, are what’s out of fashion.
Oh, they may be in fashion now, but that will change. It always does
Build up a stock. I did that when fitted shirts went out of style and managed to have just enough to make it through the slub/boyfriend only styles.
Ah, you're a few months out of date now. Skinny Jeans are back in style .
I've even seen (and own!) high waisted skinny jeans with flares. This time last year they were fairly popular in the teen groups according to my then-17 year old sister.
They rock.
I avoided skinny jeans all through the skinny jeans trend. I am so glad normal jeans are back in, and I've loaded up on them.
I hate how constricting skinny jeans feel. I hate how hard they make it to wear boots (which, living in the country, are pretty much the only shoes I wear). I hate how easily they rip whenever they get snagged on something, like barbed wire or a nail. I don't even like the way they look; there are just no upsides for me.
The core coat. It comes in and out of fashion pretty frequently, but I think it's the easiest thing to elevate an outfit without making it feel stuffy. It's very utilitarian - with pockets galore - so it always feels more like your grandpa's piece rather than Carey Grant. I think that makes it accessible.
Above the knee shorts. I had my time in long, baggy shorts and I'm never going back. I have long legs, like spider monkey long for my torso and when I wear cropped shorts they end up sitting 2-4 inches above my knee. It's a lot of leg but I think it highlights them in a nice way, rather than the weird proportions that below the knees give. My only below the knee shorts I currently own are for MTB, and even then I think I look ridiculous - but it's worth it for the protection.
Mid calf, big wool socks. It feels like we bounce around from ankle socks, to mid calf, to no-show, to whatever that height is just above the ankle. I'm a big fan of darn tough, so if I'm wearing socks I'm going with a pair of those. I think it works fine with shorts if you're exercising, just looks a bit hike-y. And if I'm wearing casual shorts I will wear sandals or no socks with Vans. Viva la wool sock!
The chino, particularly an olive chino. I think they are out of fashion again, but I always think an olive chino - fit, neither too loose or too skinny - looks great. You can pair it with nearly everything and it can be a casual or professional look. Going to the beach? Olive chino + tshirt. Going to a city council meeting? Olive chino + button down.
Controversial - a Buff. I love my buff. I wear that thing everywhere. My dad was obsessed with them and I never go it until he got me one for a trip we went on. They are warm. They look good, but aren't so big they make a big statement. They can be worn with dress cloths (as long as its a neutral color - mine are all heathered grey). And they are so small you can stuff them in your jacket or pants or backpack, and whip it out when everyone else is getting cold.
Jewel tones, please. I loathe murky greyed-out colors and Easter pastels. Neutrals are fine (boring), Elizabeth Holmes ruined all-black, I'm too butch for florals, and patterns make me dizzy. Nice, solid, saturated colors for me.
hahaha re: Elizabeth Holmes. It's funny, because it was the capsule wardrobes that got me to play with greyscale monotones to begin with! As I was constantly a loud dresser.
Have you ever considered micro-floral? If you're interested in playing around, that can be a gateway pattern lol. Polkadots, I'm a micropattern adorer, atm.
Only on accessories - I'll do printed scarves.
I am 1000% with you. I especially love dark, rich greens that are actually green (not brown, not gray).
slim fit in general. oversize is very in right now, but it just doesn't work for me. however the trend means that my partner (short petite) and i (tall slim) can finally share clothes, since oversize for her is often normal for me!
Yeah that's a good one, I also am like, are we moving into the futuristic Mumu phase? I have no issue with experimenting with robes/draping, but I am deep in my slim fit/skinny fit aesthetic for the most part.
I'm ready for the futuristic Mumu phase please.
Slim fit is great if that's what folks are into and feel good look good in :)
But I personally feel the best in loose fitting garments that aren't touching all the time, and I am very very partial to historical "fits" like kimono and cheongsam -- large areas of cloth with embroidery would be my dream fashion . It'd never be a trend though, due to costs, I'd imagine. I can't get away with casual wearing kimono outside, but sometimes I will wear a haori as a modern jacket
Metal band shirt, cutoff black shorts slightly above the knee, mid-calf boots. I'm the mid-40s teenager from the 90s who can't stop.
These are back in iirc. Certainly the high-waisted jeans that were in when I was in college aren't in anymore.
No, they’re back out, alongside skinny jeans.
Skinny jeans have been out for 5-10 years, whereas low-cut jeans came back in at some point during that period. But I'd believe that they went back out.
I would like to enter, The Jogger, as well. Hear me out. I know people hate the poopy pants look, but, I have weird proportions, and this is sometimes the only format of clothing that emphasizes my legs, while also fitting my waist.
Tight leg, roomy top, is not exactly a new trend either, I just like that it has made its way into other areas of pants.
