I've been building a playlist of songs that I would classify as, for lack of a better term, "cool" songs. The word is extremely subjective and based on my personal experience, of course. But the best way I would describe these songs would be: if I imagine myself riding in a car with a friend, and he/she puts on a playlist to show off some new music discoveries, these would be songs that I hear for the first time and think, "damn, that is a cool song."
Most of the songs that I'm about to list have similar qualities, but there are some exceptions. I know all of these songs by heart, so my objective is to find new songs that fit these obscure qualities. Also, I'd really like to know what exactly is causing me to call these songs "cool".
The songs (with Spotify links):
- The Prodigy - Breathe
- Eels - Novocaine for the Soul
- Lo Fidelity Allstars - Battleflag
- Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground
- White Town - Your Woman
- Run the Jewels - Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1
Now, you're instantly thinking: 5 out of 6 of these are songs from the 90's from groups that all probably ran in the same circles and shared pedal board setups backstage. There's probably a lot of truth to that. Aside from that theme though, here's what I've identified:
- Typically the sound is lo-fi.
- There's some sort of funky beat/rhythm. The drums are probably electronic.
- Many of these songs feature buildups into a powerful chorus or ending
- There may be vocal distortion or other effects
- Usage of electronics
- There's a dark/minor/modal sound to them
- Maybe there's a bit of industrial tie-in?
- The singers are closer to monotonous than all over the octaves
And that's all I've got so far. I've been thinking about this a lot and would love to discover some more music to fit into this theme. I want to be clear that I do NOT think this should just be a 90's playlist... unless that just happens to be where all of these songs exist.

I make playlists every so often because I hear such cool music and compile it into playlists not freely based on genre but rather on feeling and also similarity. Tastemaking, more or less.
The problem is... these playlists are promotional, to promote the music of my band. You can listen to these playlists without the context of that, but I think it's important as I don't want to self-promo any more than I have to.
So yeah. Is it ok if I post playlists here, and... would y'all be fine with that?

- National Anthem by Lana Del Rey
- American Pie by Shea Diamond
- Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
- Know Your Enemy by Rage Against the Machine

I am going on a road trip with my family, including two young kids. I want to build a massive playlist for this, as we will be in the car for probably 30 hours round trip. I’m looking to branch out and add some stuff that I haven’t heard of before, but also I want to keep it PG (no swearing, sex, drugs, etc.)
Open to all genres and styles.

So, tonight as I was putting my young kid to bed, they listed every one of the places that they desperately want to go to, but can't. It broke me. This playlist is very much still a work in progress, but if you've been curious how things sound in my head when I'm working through some shit, it's a lot like this.
Videos were selected when possible, and I'm going to warn you: There's a ton of depressing shit in these videos. If you can't handle real videos of violence right now, I'd suggest moving on.
This playlist is best paired with a strong drink, deep feelings of sadness and anger, and a dash of mental instability.

I won't write long paragraphs based around my opinon of the differing entries; suffice to say that one act stands out in a sea of mediocrity among the Nordic entries this year. I'll leave you to guess which one that might be...

Howdy folks.
Some of you will be pleased to find that this is a ~music post of mine not about emo rap, hahaha.
Across the past six months I've found myself infatuated with a new sound I can't quite put the finger on. These songs have something in common, in spirit. And that's what I'm after.
Here's a little playlist I've assembled under the title of Soul Goth. If you have any other recommendations, give me everything you got.
Or if I'm describing something what already exists; let me know.
Yalla.

"No Sugar In My Coffee" x Caught A Ghost

"The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie" x Colter Wall
"When Jesus Comes" x Uncle Sinner

I love all kinds of music, but am unable to play everything I like at work.
If anyone here has the desire to introduce me (and anyone in this thread) to some beloved stuff that may not be familiar, I would appreciate it.
As my name suggests, this is in a restaurant, so it would just have to exclude anything too introspective/atonal/delicate, and anything too speedy/loud/without melody (curses and lewdness are fine with my boss, though, interestingly enough!)
I would certainly listen to that sort of stuff, personally, though so please be free to include it with caveat.
No offense to artists who are household names and near it, but I am sorely tired of all the songs I've heard before, and my coworkers are never going to leave out the early 90s Madonna, so I am just trying to mix it up!
