What's your favorite memory from a birthday (yours or someone else's)? This could be a favorite experience, gift, interaction, cake, anything! It can be more than one!
I'll go first.
My favorite memory of my own birthday was in high school when my friends surprised me with a grocery bag filled with my favorite treats (various sour candies! XD!). For some reason, it made me feel seen.
A funny memory of my birthday was when my family treated me to IHOP for breakfast and later on that day my friends surprised me and took me to IHOP... the same one!
My favorite birthday memory in general was my significant other's. I got us tickets to a comedy show in Madison Square Garden/a weekend in NY (we were living in the west coast at the time). NYC in December: walking in Central Park, bars, donuts & pizza, good public transportation, making a little snow man, walking.
Oh, and you could also state if you had a horrible birthday experience.

Projects can be personal, professional, physical, digital, or even just ideas.
If you have any creative projects that you have been working on or want to eventually work on, this is a place for discussing those.

I'd been accumulating modular gear over the course of the pandemic, but over the last month or so I sold the majority of my modular, including swapping my 6U 89HP case for a much smaller model, without anything in it as of yet. Instead, I'm using a lot more standalone gear.
I'm using (shock, horror!) a laptop, as well as the Elektron Digitakt drum computer and Digitone polyphonic FM synthesizer. I also went from one Monome Norns Shield DIY with no input devices to two Norns Shields with a Grid and a 16n. Observe, if you want! (As an aside, I absolutely love the Monome aesthetic of raw aluminum and I've also gotten a set of faceplates and acrylic windows made for my Norns'. I kept the first two of the run, when I hadn't quite perfected the technique, so there are some blemishes; the rest went to friends.)
Interestingly, where my process tended to run up against the limitations of my gear in the past, it now seems much more constrained just by the time I am able to spend playing music each day, as I work a full time job and do most of the chores in my household.
I'd love to know how gear and process interacts for you folks, and what you do to make sure you're having fun and making music, despite the many demands on all our time.
Sometimes I'd like to post comments more frequently than a single comment anywhere on the site once every two hours.
But I can't, because I get the error "Rate limit exceeded".
Is it possible to remove or at least significantly increase the limit site-wide for established users?

I’m trying to find movies where Rock and Roll is a character, not movies about the music.
Examples I can think of include:
Heavy Metal
Xanadu
Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Rock and Rule
Maybe
Streets of Fire
The Hunger
Grease (technically a musical i guess)
Guardians of the Galaxy

I get very confused and urgent and it can be many minutes before I understand that I'm arguing from nothing but internal stress. It's a maddening habit that everyone around me finds repulsive. I have thought that it would be possible to make friends who could help to intervene when I am losing polite perspective, but I am not sure if this expectation has ever really functioned. I don't want to disavow any responsibility in telling my friends they have to jump in on my frequent malfunctions, that sounds unfair. But I'm not making much progress on getting over myself by myself. What to do.
In the discussion "Does the internet feel American centric to you?", various people mentioned living in different countries. In particular @Adys mentioned living in 5 different European countries and offered to give advice to those who are interested in moving to another country. I'd love to hear what the challenges are, and in particular how you get the courage to speak to native speakers in a language you don't speak very well.
For me, my spouse and I are considering (someday) buying property in Greece. Her family is of Greek descent, though she was born and grew up in the states. We're both learning Greek now and hope that in the future we can get back there and possibly even have a vacation home there one day. She has relatives who have homes there and in the states.
Since the recurring thread here is about recent changes you make to your diet or events where you eat things you usually don't eat these threads tend to be kinda empty so I made this post.
(Bonus question: When you first began buying your own food did you try new stuff or stuck to the diet you already had?)
Anyway:
The breakfast is usually "Hokkaido milk bread" (this loaf but less tall which we just call "Pão de leite" or "Milk bread" here) with mayonnaise and a slice of bologna.
The lunch and dinner are the 2 Brazilian staples of Rice and Beans with the "mix" (at least that's the translation of what my parents call it) which is just the third food, usually either meat, eggs or chicken, the meat and chicken being in a more often flattened or less often more cubical shape. (I'm not sure how to describe this.) and more occasionally sausage and nuggets, and strogonoff. Sometimes there's also usually screw noodles. I cook the eggs and nuggets myself and basically try to get them to be crunchy without them getting burnt.
Often around 5 PM I will eat a few guava barrinhas.
On Saturday the dinner is instead either Sfihas (That's what they're called in English? That's the weirdest anglicization I've heard of. If you don't know, it's just a smaller pizza that's usually not eaten in slices.) from which I usually pick the ones of chicken with catupiry but increasingly more pepperoni with catupiry or Whoppers, which I prefer without Pickles or tomatoes.
After a meal I'll usually drink either juice in they sell in sachets or cartons or I'll drink guaraná soft drinks if they're there. After a snack I'll drink strawberry yogurt.
If I bought my own food I would try a lot of different vegetables to see if any of them are any good and I would try to see if there's a healthier replacement for basically putting the oil you use to cook on my plate, since I've heard consuming that oil is quite unhealthy.
I'm interested in reading some books with good plot twists and would love some recommendations.
BUT WAIT THERE'S A TWIST
Knowing that a twist is coming can inhibit its effectiveness, so I also want some recommendations in this thread that do not have twists. This means that I or anyone else consulting this thread for recommendations won't necessarily know if the given book we've chosen has a twist or not, which helps keep us on our toes.
I really enjoy reading through the weekly gaming threads where people talk about what they're currently playing. Those often give really interesting in-the-moment commentary, and I was thinking it might be nice to have a spot for more formalized "I'm finished with a game" thoughts and reflections.
This thread is for when you're done with a game and you want to give your finalized overview of it. Did you enjoy it? What did it do well? What were some of its frustrations? Would you recommend it to others? That sort of thing.
For ease of readability, please bold the title for the game you're reviewing.
If this is something the community likes, I'm thinking it could be a recurring monthly thing. Consider this month's post a trial run to see whether this is a concept worth continuing.

I am actually an Org Mode user, but I want something with great mobile support (Android) as well as desktop/web. None of the Org apps is good enough for me, and that may never happens. I don't even use my computer as much these days. I've been looking into Dynalist but the free version is bit too limited, the paid version is a bit much for me. Evernote is kinda the same. I could try Joplin+Dropbox? Obsidian? IDK. Any suggestions?
I'm a software developer working with a small team, and our Google Drive folder tree of UI assets/illustrations/app icons/etc. is becoming increasingly difficult to deal with. Aside from proper versioning, symlinks would be a major plus. Both are kinda-sorta possible with GDrive, but not in a reliable way.
I'm happy to take on a reasonable amount of management myself, although the easier it is for the designers themselves to work with the software, the better. Paid solutions are fine, although open source would be preferable (even as a hosted service) to avoid vendor lock-in down the line.
My instinct is to go with git/GitHub on the basis that we're already deeply familiar with it from the dev side, the GitHub desktop app isn't too onerous for non-techies, and we're already paying for it. That said, I'd be very interested in anyone's real-world experience of git for multiple gigs of 10-200MB binary files. I've heard that it's not especially well suited, although that might be out of date knowledge?
Beyond that, I'm open to almost anything. I'm kind of surprised that I haven't been able to find a single "gold standard" piece of software here, in the way that git is for developers, but maybe I haven't been searching well enough? Any pointers in the right direction or stories of what has/hasn't worked for your teams would be a huge help!
I picked up 20 NFC tags (link) and they seem to be alright with iOS after I (re?)format them to NDEF.
Anyway, I have a few things setup:
... and that's about it. I don't have trouble waking up to an alarm, so I don't need to go down that route. Anyone have any fun things you're doing with tags?

I've spoken to a couple of my friends who have mentioned that sometimes they wear a special outfit or dress up in order to feel better/get out of a lull. Even when I'm feeling pretty good on the emotional front, I've noticed that I have some favorite pieces I regularly cycle through.
Do you have a favorite outfit, piece of clothing/accessory, type of fabric/style, or costume piece you enjoy wearing? What is it? How does that piece make you feel when you put it on? Do you wear it in public? Does the piece have any sentimental value? Not a totally related question, but if you were a cartoon character who wore the same outfit every episode, what would your outfit be?

Why do you feel that those are unfair?
Also, given the nature of the question, it's likely that some people will surface opinions you might disagree with. Please remember the principle of charity when responding!

I terminated my position over 4 months ago and I'm still not able to apply for jobs. I'm frustrated with my inability to move on from the previous toxic work environments. My background is in a male dominated field and there was always something either insensitive, sexist or racist said in all my previous workplaces. I feel, I know I'm going to be met with some sort of comment in my next work place and I no longer want to put myself in those situations anymore. I don't know how I'll react, I feel like I may explode if I hear another ignorant phrase.
I want to be able to make money. People say I must not have liked what I did very much if I wasn't able to put up with the comments. Other people say that that's just how the world is, "get used to it!" I've also heard that I'm just going to have to wait for change because drastic/fast pace change causes recoil. All of these comments literally tell me to suck it up and allow the same rhetoric to propagate. And, of course, all of this has been told to me by white men, those who aren't effected by the comments said to me.
Things that have happened to me or that were said to me:
I just don't get it. Am I suppose to let ALL these things slide? Am I suppose to hold empathy for people who don't have empathy for me? Who don't empathize with me and how what they have said may have made me feel? Should I forgive people who would rather hide the fact that they said something rather than apologize? (And yes, I filed reports for some of these comments/experiences and the rhetoric was "She got X fired", not "X's own behavior got them fired".)
And more importantly, how do I move on from this knowing that it's going to happen again? The last job had the most amount of sexism in it. The thing about sexism (and racism) is that it's meant to make you feel devalued, and shocker, I felt devalued. It took me so long to gain my self confidence back. And I want so badly to protect myself. I never want to feel those feelings again. But the world is still sexist and racist and homophobic and xenophobic... all the phobics. And how do I tell my next work place that the reason why I left and why I took a break from working was to deal with the emotional repercussions from a very toxic/sexist work environment (when workplaces see whistle blowers as a red flag)? And how to I prepare my little sister who is in college studying a male dominated field knowing that she'll have to deal with the same things I went through?
It's been 4 months and I'm still angry and still jobless. I've grown to hate social interactions for fear of someone saying some ignorant shit. I've grown a distrust of all people. I hate how much this thing has affected me, how belittled I feel and how I can't move on from this. I feel emotionally paralyzed and money is running out and jobs are hard to come by especially because I'm not white nor am I a male and my hair isn't straight Billie Holiday - I Love My Man.
I'm tired of confusing people with how my looks don't match my attitude/personality that they've been conditionally taught to think it was like. I'm tired of confusing people with how unashamed I am of my existence.
