Tildes Book Club - Born a Crime, How is it going?
Wes asked this question a few days ago as a comment in the schedule, but I thought it might be worth reaching everyone.
We will be discussing Born a Crime next week. How is it going?

Could I get added to this list of taggees, please? I’m always worried I’m going to miss one of these threads!
Absolutely.
I'd also like to be added to the tag list -- I'm going to make a concerted effort to read more this year, and this book club seems like a great opportunity.
Sounds good.
I'll be finishing up my current audiobook read (All in Her Head) in a few days, and then Born a Crime is next up.
I don't love that the audiobook is an Audible exclusive, because I'd much rather get it from the library or on my preferred platform. I don't actively subscribe to Audible, I just keep my account at a persistent 3 credits for when I run into books like this one.
I was wondering why the library didn't have it, and that explains that!
I've never subscribed to Audible and I don't think I really want to, but if I start feeling the need to get more out of audiobooks than I can from my library, I might check out that website more closely. Thanks for the tip!
If your library doesn't have the audiobook, it's worth seeing if they have a playaway. It's like a single book mp3 player you just need to have a battery for it and plug in (I know) headphones to it.
They can be handy for things like this.
you can swoop in, get your book for free on the trial, immediately cancel, use inAudible or something similar to strip the DRM… in and out, quick. i think they reset your trial every nine months or so, but i could be wrong.
Just finished this a few days ago. I went with the audio book version of this one, and I felt like it was a good decision. It makes sense to listen to a memoir read by the author so they can add some emotion and emphasis. There are a bunch of foreign language bits and slightly varying accents that are interesting to hear pronounced out loud. Also, comedians are basically professional story tellers.
About 1/3 of the way through and I'm enjoying it a lot more than I expected. I'm not one for biographies, but Trevor Noah is a great storyteller. Seeing the other comments, I kind of wish I got the audiobook but I didn't have an available credit.
I finished it a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed it! I’m looking forward to discussing it with folks. Trevor Noah has a great narrative style, and I felt like I learned a LOT about life in South Africa and was inspired to read a lot more about it.
......I forgot about this book. I'll see if I can get to it this week!
This is my second time reading it, I had read it when it came out. So far I am not that far into the memoir. I think I am still in the first part of the book.
From a technical perspective, it's going quite poorly. But that's just because I'm skipping the reading this month! Biographies aren't really a style I enjoy and with a backlog hanging around, I'll kick back and let you all read it and just benefit from the discussion, which I look forward to reading.
Three weeks into a new job, so far behind on life. I hope y'all enjoy.
