Tildes Book Club - How is it going with The Metamorphosis?

Hello book club readers!

This month we are reading a classic, the Metamorphosis by Kafka. How is it going? Have you started?

I'm finishing up some other books but will start soon. I've never read this one and I'm looking forward to reading it.

I've read it before (in college) so I will probably lurk when it comes to the discussion this time.

I finished it a few weeks ago, right after Fire on the Mountain. Even though I'd never read it before, I sort of knew the basic premise of the novel just through cultural osmosis, but even knowing the premise it still surprised me. So I'm excited to discuss it and also see what other people thought about it too.

I haven’t started yet. I’m excited though, this book club + my new library membership have started getting me to read again. Will start The Metamorphosis after finishing To Save and To Destroy.

I read it way back in high school, but I honestly don’t remember much of anything about it, so I’m looking forward to revisiting it.

Anyone have a particular English translation that they’d recommend? I know there are several different ones available.

I didn’t realize that was the case. I spent a lot of time figuring out which translation of Anna Karenina to read and ended up happy I had.

I finished the audiobook last week. I got curious about it and Kafka in general, so skimmed through the wiki pages. Turns out Kafka is like Tolkien in that some college professors specialize in just that author! I didn’t get the same thing out of it as any of the listed wiki explanations, so I’m really curious to hear what other non specialists thought.

For anyone wanting to understand more about Kafka's themes and motivations in his novels and novellas, I would strongly recommend reading "Brief an den Vater" (Letter to His Father) as it i) is a pretty phenomenal and rare piece of literature to exist, and ii) pretty much explains what his whole deal is.

And if you're ever in Prague please visit the Kafka museum, I thought it worth the money.

I have only read his works in German, so I can't recommend any English translations, unfortunately.
