Hello,
I'm into self-hosting and when my daughter (elementary school) started writing her own recipe book, I kinda went "She is young, she shouldn't be doing this in paper form" and I started looking around for a solution for kinda non-existing problem.
I stumbled upon Mealie, which is server that can be used in docker and is self-hosted recipe book/website. It seems like you can come in and say like "I have these ingrediants, what can I do?", it also seems to be able to generate shopping lists based on your selected recipe, you can use checkboxes when bringing all the ingredients on the kitchen board/table/top (non-English native speaker here) and so on.
It seems like the right software for me, but before I delve into it, I wanted to ask if someone else possibly runs such service for themselves at their home. Is there somebody who is using something like this? It doesn't have to be Mealie, specifically. But it should be server-side service, not some smartphone app. I know there are other such services, which are also open-source, but I forgot the names, sorry.
Thanks for any relevant answers!

What movies become better by having a bus suddenly come out of no where and hit someone?
Warning: this post may contain spoilers
Exactly as the title says. What film becomes better if someone suddenly gets hit by a bus?
Could be at the very end for an unexpected laugh at the sheer suddenness and absurdity. Could be some karma against a much-hated antagonist. Could happen earlier in a film, and abruptly cut off an otherwise bad movie by just ending it then and there. Or maybe even change the film's trajectory by changing focus to the recovery and aftermath.
Can be played for laughs, can be played for drama. Could be fatal, could careen the story (and sequels) in a totally different direction. There are infinite possibilities, and this seems like a fun question to explore. I can think of so many slasher films that could be hilariously cut off at an early point by a bus just appearing out of no where to hit the killer.
And while I want to restrict this to settings with buses, I think I'll open the floor to other settings. Buses don't really exist in the Star Wars universe to my knowledge, but it's fun to think about the changes to the franchise from a bus hitting Jar Jar Binks in the first film (or not hitting him and revealing the Darth Jar Jar theory to be true in the process), along with the investigation into what the bus was and how it spawned on an underwater planet.

I recently realized that many of my favorite gadgets are basically "new" versions of old technology.
- I use Sony Xperia 1VII, with a headphone jack, side mounted fingerprint, no screen cutout, stock Android. It's running the latest Snapdragon chip, however, and the camera hardware is better than the current iPhone (doesn't mean the software is better)
- My favorite smartwatch is Pebble Time. My rePebble Time 2 is on the way. I'm currently using a Garmin, but I'm not exactly happy with it.
- My keyboard is a Niz EC84. The default keycap looks like my keyboard in middle school and it is just perfect right out of the box (except I should've got the 45g one). As a Topre clone, it bounces with rubber domes. I don't like mechanical as the tactile point is not right at the very top of the curve. It also supports hardware mouse key and Bluetooth which is useful when you're working with multiple machines. (Sadly no QMK in this layout)
- When I was buying my PC I couldn't find a single good modern case (i.e. with USB C ports in the front panel) that doesn't have any glass like old school PC. Luckily, Fractal North was just released back then and I immediately preordered.
- I suppose the ThinkPad line may fit into this aesthetically, but it's not exactly the same as it was in IBM era. I heard that the Chinese are making new board for the old ThinkPad chassis though.
I feel like this is an underserved market - why can't they just give me the same phone/computer I have but with the latest technological advancements. Sure, it'd be niche and many people will complain at the price, but at least there is a choice.
Does anyone have other favorite new old school tech they wanted to recommend?

The road to non-directed kidney donation

I've decided to give up my kidney to a stranger and document the process and hopefully my posts can be the kind of resources I wish I had when I first looked into this.
Someone here recently linked to Scott Alexander's post on his non-directed donation experience [1] and afterwards I got recommended Jesse Eisenberg's interview on his experience [2]. I think this led to me thinking about the subject and deciding that I at least need to look into this and see if my worries about it are founded. It turns out they are not. Here are the highlights of my research:
- Compared to other activities, donating a kidney is not especially risky [1]
- It is entirely free; all aspects of the process are free including travel [5]
- If anyone in your family needs a kidney, they are at the very top of the list for a living donor kidney [3]
- NKR will cover up to $2000/week in lost wages using Donor Shield [5], though if your work allows you to take paid time off, I highly recommend you save their resources for those without that luxury
- Non-directed donors can use "chaining" to have their one donation result in 3-7 further donations due to matchmaking on the NKR (this is complicated to summarize, ask if you want information or see the link) [4]
Step 1: Reach out to the National Kidney Registry (NKR)
The ideal way to become a non-directed donor is to reach out first to the NKR. They run the family voucher program that protects your family should they need a kidney in the future. They first have screening questions, then there is a questionnaire about your medical history that you complete, and immediately upon completion, they have labs ready for you to take. I reached out to NKR yesterday morning and had labs completed yesterday afternoon at a local clinic.
As for what's next, my labs will come back and the NKR says I will then choose a preferred donation center. I have absolutely no idea what considerations matter when choosing the best donation center. I assume something local, since I can't fly immediately after surgery and the drive home will be painful.
If you've considered kidney donation and didn't do it, what held you back? I want to know to 1: see if I can correct a false belief you have about the process or 2: see if I should reconsider this whole thing. Also, if anyone wants to join me on this journey, click on any NKR link and click the donate button and let's do this!

As a proud husband, I wanted to share that my wife's new book is officially released today! We both knew nothing about publishing books before this journey and now she is independently publishing her 5th book and first in a new series. She writes romance, so not my normal choice of material, but I have read all of her books and really enjoy them. There is just something cool about seeing my wife bring characters to life, especially since I do not consider myself a creative.
She did have a photography business before Covid, which fell apart thanks to the lockdowns. That's when she got into bookstagram and eventually decided to write her own books. Its been a wild ride since and she has met a ton of great people. It sure doesn't pay the bills, but that seems pretty par for the course. AI slop isn't helping that either.
Anyways, if you have Kindle Unlimited you can read it there for free. Or you can find her book on Amazon if you want. Sadly, its the best place left for indie authors.

Do you work your own dream job? If you do, what is something you'd like to change about it to make it even better? This question popped in my head this morning while not wanting to dive in to a weird work thing and after a quick look, it's been ~4 years since the last time a similar question was asked by @kfwyre (who posts awesome discussion questions!), and I thought that it's been long enough to ask again for new Tilders to chime in or for whoever answered last time to come back and see if their answers are the same.

I recently started a new job and have realized I'm not entirely sure what the scope of work is. I applied to a role that I was very well suited for and had a very clear objective. I went through like 8 rounds of interviews for them to decide that the team I applied for was CET and I am PT, which likely wouldn't work. So they made me a position with a team on the US west coast, be it a very different one. The salary is still wild so I took it, particularly in this job market, but now I'm having a hard time sussing out what the extents of my position actually are.
Has anyone been in this position before or have advice on how to narrow the scope of your work if it's a bit amorphous? Cheers!

In the same vein as my thread a few months ago about flashlights, in which I was incredulous that the world has moved on from alkaline batteries to lithium, the Boy Scout in me reminds me I'm an idiot every time I go out for a hike with my anemic first aid kit.
One specific thing I'm curious about is that when I go to REI or other outdoorsy stores, I see the first aid aisle has all sorts of options for tourniquets, wound packing, etc., etc. Are people actually carrying that stuff with them, or is it all kind of a gimmick?
My nightmare is to be out hiking, have myself or someone I'm with get injured, and be like "well, we might've been able to save your life/limb if we just had XYZ item no one wanted to buy/carry".
If anyone has advice, guides on putting together a kit, or recs for good little bags to pack everything in, I'm all ears!
