I'm not exactly tech saavy when it comes to something like this, so guides accompanying suggestions would be super helpful.

This tournament has been absolutely bonkers so far with last night as the culmination so far. What an absolutely mad night that was. 14 goals and a penalty shoot out. The world champions are out after a heroic effort from the Swiss and Croatia putting up one helluva fight against Spain. I can't remember a EURO or WC so exiting before.

Edit: Just to clarify - this wasn't meant as a provocation or a dig at this sites lack of interest in sports. I'm just excited.

I know much of North America is under a heat wave right now, as well as some other parts of the world. My husband and I have central AC in our house, but it hasn't been able to keep up. We've closed up the vents for most of the house during the day and are forcing the air into our living room only as a way of keeping cool. We've also got some friends staying with us that don't have AC at their house at all.

What is it like where you are at? Are you able to stay out of the heat? Is this just a one-off weather pattern, or should we get used to this sort of thing happening more and more often on account of climate change?

This is an inherently political thread; please try to avoid antagonistic arguments and bickering matches. Comment threads that devolve into unproductive arguments may be removed so that the overall topic is able to continue.

As a new member I am really hesitant to post this but I recently posted an article to ~news that was related to lgbt issues and it was moved to ~lgbt. I fully support a sub section devoted to lgbt but news should be news regardless.

Just because it has an lgbt angle does not mean it should be moved. I'm not even lgbt myself but I find it sort of hurtful that a news article was pushed off ~news. So I ask this, and once again not trying to make waves. But why?

Edit: I would love to be a member of this community as I am personally seeking a less asshole filled reddit alternative. But pushing a news article to another ~ just because it relates a bit more to them shouldn't be a thing. If you are tolerant it relates to us all. And yes I know I posted it in ~news because I was trying to participate and I'm a news junky.

      Sorry.

Edit 2: This was a sad sorry way to come in to this community. I apologize.

So I rescued an old TV from the trash, appears to be a Hitachi Rear Projection TV, no obvious model number available, and when I try to power it on, it will display just fine, but it has no audio coming out UNLESS I turn it over to antenna input, in which case it has bone rattling analog static. This is the US where everyone changed over to digital television, so not super helpful, and while I could do some sound splitting magic, that seems like a waste if there are already good speakers. So I have come to you, honored Tildos, for assistance in pointing me in the right direction on whether or not this television's speakers can be saved.

NewsBlur was down yesterday evening due to its Mongo database getting attacked by a hacker and held for ransom. It’s restored from backup, but there are privacy implications for anyone who had sensitive private data there. We will likely find out more after the maintainer recovers from a busy night.

There are no good links for this, but it’s being discussed on Hacker News. Since it’s open source, someone described what’s being kept in that database.

(I use NewsBlur, but I don’t think my RSS reading habits are all that sensitive. Others might be in a different situation, though.)

The Disc Golf World Championships just finished and they have been fantastic. I have watched a lot of sporting events, and this was one of the most interesting and exciting sports tournaments I've ever seen. I'm a stereotypical Canadian boy and I am saying this about not-hockey!

If you are not really into disc golf but perhaps interested enough to watch half an hour or so of the 7ish hours of videos that I've linked here, then here you go: Final Round starting on hole 16. If you have interest in any competitive sports (and you probably do if you're reading this) then I guarantee that you will not regret spending half an hour clicking on this link.

This is all going to be Men's Lead Card coverage from Jomez Pro but if this sparks interest for you, check out Gatekeeper Media for Men's chase card action, GK Pro for Men's chase-chase cards, and Central Coast Disc Golf for Women's Lead card.

      • Round 1: Ricky Wysocki, Paul Ulibarri, Jeremy Koling, Emmerson Keith. Front 9 - Back 9
      • Round 2: Ricky Wysocki, Nate Sexton, Calvin Heimburg, Kevin Jones. Front 9 - Back 9
      • Round 3: Paul McBeth, James Conrad, Emmerson Keith, Calvin Heimburg. Front 9 - Back 9
      • Round 4: Nate Sexton, Calvin Heimburg, Emmerson Keith, Ezra Aderhold. Front 9 - Back 9
      • Final Round: Paul McBeth, James Conrad, Kevin Jones, Calvin Heimburg. Front 9 - Back 9

Bonus: Mic'd up Practice Round. Jeremy Koling, Nate Sexton, Paul Ulibarri. Front 9 - Back 9

Even tech news moves a bit too fast for me to keep up. Did UMN ever get unbanned? I saw a half-hearted apology and then finally this [1], but never heard any update. Most recent article I've seen is this ZDNet article [2] from a couple of weeks ago discussing a related issue, but still mentions that UMN is still banned.

      Anyone following this?

      Welcome back!

Right after making this post, I'm going to update the DNS records to point tildes.net to this server, so everyone should start trickling in as those updates go through.

The switch and upgrades all seem to have gone fairly well, though there were definitely a few issues here and there that I had to work through. I'm glad I decided to do a longer downtime instead of needing to rush through figuring some of it out.

A summary of what's changed so far:

      • Running on a different physical server (but in the same datacenter)
      • Operating system is now Debian 10 instead of Ubuntu 16.04
      • Python version is now 3.9 instead of 3.8 (and updated a couple libraries that needed it)
      • PostgreSQL version is now 13 instead of 12
      • Redis version is now 6 instead of 5
      • Everything was deployed and configured using Ansible instead of SaltStack

There are still a few more changes and updates I want to make soon, but I can just do them normally while the site is running. I'll also update the open-source code soon, once I finalize a few pieces and finish cleaning things up.

Please let me know if you notice anything that seems to be behaving strangely, it's definitely possible that there are some things broken in subtle (or not-subtle) ways.
