Discussion Topics

Each month will have two discussion topics:

  • "Insert Cartridge" - 1st of the month
  • "Remove Cartridge" - 28th of the month (25th for February)

Insert Cartridge topics are primarily for getting the game set up and running. Remove Cartridge topics are primarily for reflecting on the game once you've played it. However, the game itself and anything else related to it can be discussed in either one.

Hosting

Each month, the discussion topics will be posted by a different "host" who will act as the emcee for that month.

Hosting is not required, but it is encouraged that people host months for games that they are either already very familiar with or that they are strongly interested in playing.

People who nominated a game will be given preference for hosting, otherwise it will be given to whomever claims it first.

Check out old months to get a feel for what it's like.

Required Hosting Responsibilities
  • Editing the templates for the month's "Insert Cartridge" and "Remove Cartridge" topics.
  • Posting the month's "Insert Cartridge" and "Remove cartridge topics.
Optional Hosting Responsibilities
  • Talking up the game.
  • Giving tips/tricks/guides/cheats.
  • Sharing your own thoughts/memories/reflections.
  • Asking questions.
  • Anything else you feel like doing (e.g. setting up a multiplayer tournament, making game-related memes, sharing fun trivia, etc.)

If you would like to host a month, let me know which one and I will add you to the schedule.

Before your month begins, I will send you a "Hosting Package" featuring templates that you can edit to your liking.

If no one claims a month, I will host it as a fallback.

Voting Results

The top 6 games from the voting round were chosen to be played.

Of the remaining games:

  • The top 50% will advance to the next round. They will start the next round with a base score of 30% of their vote totals.
  • The bottom 50% will be removed from the list.

Removed games will be able to be re-nominated in future rounds if someone chooses to do so.

CGA Announcement: Voting has concluded and we now have the new schedule for October 2026 - May 2027.

There was an astounding FOUR-way tie for 5th, so we've selected the next 8 months of games to play instead of the usual 6!

As always, people who nominated winning games have first dibs on hosting those months.

Also, The Grue That Binds was an Arcade Special that combined games from three different nominators:

Feel free to fight amongst yourselves and determine a victor. Hosting will go to the first one that steps forward and wants to do it!

If you want to host your month, let me know so I can officially add you to the schedule. If you do NOT wish to host your month, also let me know and I will open it up to others.

Enjoy the remaining days of Tony Hawk and get yourself ready for

Looks like nobody's interested in hosting Mother 3 so I'll take it (which will be interesting, because I know literally nothing about it).

I'd certainly like to host both Sonic the 3D Hedgehog and The Genesis of Treasure. For the former, it'll be a bit trickier, since I'll be traveling in Japan by the time this goes live, so I came up with a workaround.

Since I'll be abroad between November 10th and December 8th, I shall cook up that Insert Cartridge thread well in advance and send a copy of it to u/kfwyre. That way, my writeup won't go to waste in case I forgot or couldn't find a Wi-Fi within my area. Bonus points if I receive and configure my Black Base Ayn Thor properly before I embark on a plane with it, so I can play both Sonic Adventure games during my long, long return flight.

    Current Sale Rundown:

There is price parity for all games available on both Steam and GOG with the exception of Alone in the Dark 1 which is considerably cheaper on GOG than it is on Steam (although with Steam you get the 2008 game as well). (Note: I have only confirmed this for the US -- it might vary for other regions).

Also, I checked the Humble Store to see if people with Choice could stack discounts, but the games available there are currently at full price and are thus more expensive than the current sales.

    Game Discount Steam GOG
Alone in the Dark Anthology (1-4) -75% Steam
Alone in the Dark Trilogy (1-3) -75% GOG
Alone in the Dark (2024 remake) -67% Steam GOG
    Maniac Mansion -65% Steam GOG
    Sonic Adventure -50% Steam
    Sonic Adventure 2 -50% Steam
Resident Evil (REmake) -75% Steam GOG
Resident Evil (1996) -50% Steam GOG
    Another World -75% Steam GOG
Zork Anthology (1-6) -35% Steam GOG

That said, the GOG price is notably cheaper even at full price, at least in the US. $5.99 ($1.49 sale) on GOG versus $14.99 ($3.74 sale) on Steam. Probably because the Steam Anthology also includes the 2008 game.

The OG 1996 Resident Evil (but not the REmake) is also now available in a Humble Bundle alongside 2 and 3, Dino Crisis 1 and 2, and Breath of Fire IV.

The schedule is currently still tentative, so if anyone (particularly anyone hosting) has any strong feelings about moving things around then let me know.

    Here was my thinking:

    • Spooky Mansions for October, natch. (Though it was admittedly tougher to make this call because RE also got chosen).
    • Split up the FOUR(!) different Arcade Specials that got chosen.
    • Put the shortest game (Another World) in the shortest month (February).
    • Pick Sonic Adventure for December because it has a Christmas DLC.
    • Split up potentially repeating hosts (Apple and Chippy) so they're not booked back to back.

Your thinking makes perfect sense to me for the schedule. It’s funny, I just introduced my kiddo to the first Sonic Adventure (on Dreamcast!) and they’ve been having a blast with it. Good nostalgia trip for me too! Somehow I don’t think I ever heard about that Christmas DLC though, it sounds terrible lol. Unfortunately my SA2 disc got a scratch and became unplayable years ago. I’ve got the GameCube version too but the optical drive on my Wii (never had a real GameCube) has been dead for ages too. I’ve been itching to play that game again, will need to find a way to make it work.

Cohosting that arcade special with @clayh and @hamstergeddon should be interesting. I love a good text adventure. You know, I never expected Twisted! to end up in a CGA. It’s not a text adventure, btw, just the fever dream of Ray, a model rocketry enthusiast and ghost town explorer who also sometimes made shareware games. A relic from a forgotten era. I half suspect I’m the only person still alive (apart from Ray himself) who even remembers this game at all. I’m looking forward to sharing it with you unsuspecting Tilderinos!

I've got you slotted for hosting Grue for now, though I love the idea of co-hosts sharing that month if your co-nominators are interested.

Also, it's 100% on me for putting an apparently non-text adventure into that group, but also, like, it was hard to find good information on the game? There's not a lot out there.

I was excited to find out that it's mentioned in The Secret History of Mac Gaming which I bought recently but haven't cracked open yet, so I'll have to dive into that before/once March rolls around.

It’s funny, I just introduced my kiddo to the first Sonic Adventure (on Dreamcast!) and they’ve been having a blast with it.

Oh man, you have that book too! It’s one of my prized possessions! Literally just pulled it off the shelf after reading your comment to remind myself what it says about Ray Dunakin. The ‘80s and ‘90s Mac gaming scene was such an oddball niche, I’m happy to have been there for it. Not so different from the weirdness of the Dreamcast scene, come to think of it… I guess I’ve always been a bit on the fringes of what’s “cool” in games. Anyway, enjoy the book, there’s a good chunk of my childhood woven through those pages.

I’m honored to host the Twisted! part of the arcade special. Happy to host the others too but I’m less familiar with them and my bias may result in… unequal treatment lol

Also, feel free to bias the month as much as you like! Border Zone and Zork already have their own Wikipedia pages, so really, they don't need the fanfare like Twisted! does. You'd really just be leveling the playing field. :)

Courtesy of @Wes: Resident Evil (REmake) is currently available in a Capcom Bundle at Fanatical, and is on sale on its own on Steam. Meanwhile, if you've got the Humble Choice discount, you can save a little bit more via the Humble Store instead.

If you're wanting the original Resident Evil (1996) version too, good news! It's also on sale on Steam and the Humble Store. If you prefer it on GOG, the individual game isn't on sale, but the Humble Store has the full OG trilogy on discount.

While we're talking discounts, Another World is on sale over at GOG right now.

Oh, and Sonic Adventure 2 is in Tier 1 of a current Humble Bundle.
